• By Anan Zaki
FOR 25 years, Jon Rogers has
read out the names at Hornby
High School’s prize-givings.
It was the deputy principal’s
job, and one he has taken pride
in doing.
But last week’s event was
different. It was Mr Rogers’ last
prize-giving.
The 66-year-old is stepping
down, and will hand over the
deputy role that he has made
his own over the past two
decades.
His work was so appreciated,
that Hornby High School
students and staff gave him a
standing ovation at last week’s
special assembly.
“All the staff and people in
the audience standing up and I
thought goodness. It was a very,
very special moment and meant
an enormous amount to me,”
Mr Rogers said.
Born in Katikati, Bay of
Plenty, Mr Rogers grew up in
Auckland.
Prior to joining Hornby High
School in 1994, he taught social
studies and history at Penrose
High School in Auckland, where
he started his career in 1975.
Community Board will go
behind-closed-doors to decide if it
will continue spending ratepayers’
money on food for its fortnightly
meetings.
Board chairman Mike Mora
said members will discuss the
catering costs
at tonight’s
meeting, which
will exclude the
public.
The community
board has
spent more than
$10,000 since it
was elected in
Mike Mora
October 2016 – the highest of any
community board.
The food is available at its
meetings for board members, city
council staff and members of the
public who attend.
“It’s an internal matter. I don’t
see the need that it needs to be
[public]. It’s a discussion we need
to have to gauge each other’s
responses as to what they see as
our needs,” Mr Mora said.
IF YOU ARE going to the Hornby-
Halswell-Riccarton Community Board
meeting tonight, there’s one discussion
you won’t get to hear.
Board members will go in-committee
to talk about ratepayer-funded food they
consume at meetings. Food at the city’s community boards has
been a source of debate since we revealed the costs a few weeks
ago.
In-committee means the public is excluded from that part of
the meeting. Journalists can stay but they are prohibited from
reporting what is said. That’s why they will leave the room and
then get what was discussed/debated another way.
Board members have come up with lame reasons why the
meeting is being held in secret.
It’s less than a year to the next election. That’s the drum
beating in the background.
Frustration after water cut off
Construction firm
faces backlash
from residents
• By Anan Zaki
AVONHEAD residents are
unhappy after construction at a
retirement village shut off their
water for hours without notice.
The residents were upset again
when only some of the affected
people were given an apology
by the construction site’s owner,
Summerset.
The incident happened on
October 25, when residents on
Hawthornden Rd and Henridge
Pl lost water unexpectedly at
about 10am. They did not get
their water supply back until
about 4.30pm that day.
Henridge Pl resident Nicola
McCormick said what had
frustrated her the most was the
lack of acknowledgement of the
incident from Summerset.
“The thing that really
annoyed residents of Henridge
Pl was they [Summerset]
sent an apology to residents
of Hawthornden Rd, but
didn’t send one for us,” Mrs
McCormick said.
A Summerset spokeswoman
said a water pipe fractured
during work at the site. She said
Summerset was unaware that
Henridge Pl was affected by the
water outage and apologised to
the residents who did not receive
an apology.
The incident is under
investigation, the spokeswoman
Ms Broughton felt if the
“I’ve given an understanding
to other board members that it
said.
But if the catering discussion
is deferred again at the next
meeting, Ms Broughton said she
will file a notice of motion to
Ms Broughton also felt her
board spent “too much” on
Disappointment over liquor licence
• By Anan Zaki
RICCARTON residents are
disappointed after a pool hall’s
liquor licence application was
given the go-ahead.
The Common Room, previously
known as More Pool at 119
Riccarton Rd faced a challenge
from locals about its proposed
liquor sale hours of 8am to 2am
daily.
But the residents’ challenge
was largely unsuccessful.
The city council’s district
licensing committee decision
on October 29 stated that the
Common Room is allowed to
sell alcohol from 8am to 1am,
Sunday to Thursday – one hour
less than the business wanted.
But on Friday and Saturday,
the Common Room can sell
alcohol from 8am to 2am.
The licensing committee
said the 1am closing time was
ordered due to concerns about
nuisance on weekdays.
Riccarton Bush and Kilmarnock
Residents’ Association
chairman Tony Simons was
unhappy with the licensing committee
decision.
“I don’t think that will make a
difference. But our main concern
was about another new tavern
licence in the area,” Mr Simons
said. At the district licensing
committee hearing, Common
GREEN LIGHT: The Common Room, previously known as
More Pool, has been granted a liquor licence.
Room owner Matthew Glanville
said his business was not a
tavern but an entertainment
venue with pool tables and dart
boards.
The licensing committee said it
was satisfied with Mr Glanville’s
explanation.
Mr Glanville could not be
reached for comment.
Mr Simons believes the pool
hall and “entertainment venue”
will increase loitering in an
area which has previously been
plagued by anti-social behaviour
near the Riccarton Rd bus
lounges.
But the licensing committee
said the anti-social behaviour at
the bus lounges has improved
through the collective work of
the community and police.
Police did not object to the
application. The licence will be
valid for 12 months before Mr
Glanville has to renew it.
Mr Simons said the residents
will not appeal the application.
Over the years, he has seen
plenty of change at Hornby
High School.
Mr Rogers has worked with
six principals, hundreds of
teachers and thousands of
students in those years.
“When I first arrived, I think
the school did lack confidence
in itself. It had started 20 years
before and the roll grew and
then fell,” Mr Rogers said.
“The school was decreasing
[in size], and losing teachers. So,
there was a lack of confidence at
the school, but it’s not evident
now,” he said.
That confidence has grown
with the school rebuild,
something he has played a key
role in overseeing.
Mr Rogers said the physical
changes to the school did not
make him feel old.
“I’m quite invigorated and
excited by everything I see here
and with a certain amount
of regret that I’m helping to
establish it all . . . but it’s going
to be for others to carry on the
good work.”
He said he was happy with
being deputy for 25 years
instead of moving on or
in all honesty I’ve been most
He said the most memorable
students and teachers.
“They’re friendly, work hard
and they’re just good honest
Kirkwood Opportunities
‘Schooling for the Whole Child’
At Kirkwood we are very proud of our children and their achievements. Our pupils have many opportunities to participate
in a wide range of education activities including Technology; ICT; Music; Drama; Education Outside The Classroom;
Leadership roles; Camps; Academic challenges; and Sports. Our pupils develop a wide range of skills which helps them
develop educationally, socially, emotionally and physically during their time with us. Just a few of the opportunities our
pupils have experienced this year are as follows:
Education Outside the
Classroom
We visit many different places within our community
such as Canterbury Museum, Riccarton House
and the Art Gallery. We also offer class camps for
our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. This year our Year
7’s camped at Purau Bay where they experienced
canoeing, abseiling and camping skills, along
with getting to know their class and developing
friendships.
Our Year 8 pupils are currently enjoying their
Wellington camp. These camps provide
great opportunities for learning and personal
development.
China Trip
Part way through the July school holidays, Ethan, Brooke, Aaliya, Casper,
Mackenzie, Lauren, Ryan, Alexander, Katie and Grace and two teachers
had the opportunity to explore China. This was the first Panda camp we
have attended.
The following article was written by Katie and Alex:
‘The Temple of Heaven, the Pearl Markets, the Summer Palace and
seeing the general lifestyle of the Chinese people. They were able to see
some beautiful buildings with long, rich histories of emperors and different
dynasties. Haggling is common at the Pearl Markets and was a very
different experience for us, which encouraged us to quickly learn about
converting yuan into New Zealand dollars to get a good price. We also
really enjoyed the boat ride across the Emperor’s lake; there have been
many great memories made as a group.
Our days at the Chinese school were busy - making new friends, teaching
rakau and the cup song, learning Chinese calligraphy and songs as well as
experiencing a huge school cafeteria, which was a very different experience!
It was a great opportunity to see how school works in a different country
and try new things. We all enjoyed teaching physical education games such
as elastics and a football/badminton game that we pretty much invented.
Duck, duck, goose was also a favourite amongst the pupils in China!
We were fortunate to continue to travel and see incredible sights such as
The Great Wall of China, where we were all able to walk a section. Another
highlight was the Beijing Zoo, it was a great chance to see some rare
animals but the living conditions were very sad. In addition to these places
we also visited the 2008 Olympic venues, the Water Cube and the Bird’s
Nest, as well as the Olympic torch and Olympic Village areas which we
found to be interesting. Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City also
hold important places in Chinese history and often we were in awe of how
immense these places are in addition to hearing about the incredible history
behind the building of these structures. The National Museum of China was
also very impressive in both the artwork and size of the building!
We will all recall some amazing chances to explore a different culture, some
interesting memories for us as Kirkwood United and the opportunity to
represent Kirkwood with pride as global youth ambassadors. We would like
to say a huge thank you to Miss Toaolamai and Mr Gaut for their support
on the trip. Thank you to our parents for encouraging us to take up such an
awesome opportunity. We all had an amazing time and hope to see more
Kirkwood students exploring the world in years to come!
Sports
We participate in a large variety of sports including: Netball, Football, Cross
Country, Skiing, Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Waterpolo, Touch Rugby, Korf
Ball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Athletics and Gymnastics. We also compete in
the Canterbury Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling competitions.
Our school is well known for the courtesy, co-operation and sportsmanship
of our teams and we value this highly. Some of the highlights this year are as
follows:
Example from last year:
Korfball Tournament - We sent two teams to the Canterbury Korfball
Tournament. Bowls Tournament - we had 12 successfully compete at the
Canterbury Bowls Tournament. Table Tennis - 4 of our Table Tennis teams
were placed in the top 3 of their weekly competition. Girls’ Basketball team
were placed third in their Friday evening competition.
Many of our pupils have been selected to represent Canterbury and/or have
been selected for the Nationals in various sports which makes our school proud.
Technology
Our on-site technology centre provides our pupils
with a range of creative learning experiences in
different areas: Foods, Electronics, Robotics and
Materials (metal, wood, fabric and plastic). Our
pupils have created a large variety of work this
year. We also participate in Robofest, Future in
Tech programmes, EPro8 and 3D printing.
Programmes focus on Planning for Practice, Brief
Development and Outcome Evaluation.
ICT: We have pods of touch screen laptops,
ordinary laptops and Chromebooks
for classroom use to enable pupils
to develop their skills. Pupils are
also welcome to bring their own
technology. More pupils are doing
this each year. We recommend that
parents check which devices are
used at the High School they think
their children will be attending.
Blues Awards
Outstanding achievements, whether they
are personal or at school, are celebrated
via our Blues Awards system. Our
students can achieve a Blues Award in
various areas such as Cultural, Sports
and Academic.
An Outstanding Elite Blues Award may
be achieved if a student has achieved an
Academic, Cultural and a Sporting Blue.
There are quite strict criteria for receiving
a Blue and these are outlined on our
website www.kirkwood.school.nz
School Production
Every second year we produce a school
performance for all interested pupils. Our
next School Production will be in 2019.
Don’t forget, there are still some places available for Year 7 and Year 8 for 2019.
Please visit our website www.kirkwood.school.nz for information and to
download an enrolment form or ring the office on 348 7718.
Stedman picks up top award
• By Jacob Page
RIO PARALYMPIC bronze
medallist William Stedman
has been named Middleton
Grange’s sportsman of the year
for the third consecutive time.
Stedman, who has cerebral
palsy won four gold medals at
the national championships in
March.
He won the 200m, 400m,
800m and long jump.
The 18-year-old who lives in
Cashmere said he was hugely
honoured by the feat.
“It’s extremely humbling to
win the award once let alone
three times,” he said.
He said winning a mainstream
award as a disabled
athlete was a sign of the times.
“You’re seeing para-sports
becoming more integrated with
regular events and that’s really
exciting to see.”
Stedman started running
after seeing the London Paralympics
in 2012.
“I started running longer
distances and cross country
events for my club, Port Hills,
but I was encouraged to try
sprint distances because I was
still young in 2014.”
He and coach George Edwards
have been a team since
then.
“George and I get on really
well and he’s great at coaching
me to coach myself and
explaining why we do certain
things.
William has the world championships
in the latter part of
next year to focus on but said
winning Paralympic gold in
2020 was the ultimate focus.
“Having a big break between
major events has allowed me to
focus on my form and actually
see the progression as it happens,”
he said.
“It can be hard to try to peak
three times a year so with world
champs still a year away, it’s
been a big plus for me to just
concentrate on training.
“I think the long jump is
where I have my best chance
and while I’m not bad at the
400m it’s not the most pleasant
event for me,” he said. “It
hurts.”
Stedman is looking to study
engineering part-time at the
University of Canterbury while
continuing to focus on his
athletics.
Bid to drown car fails
• By Matt Salmons
CAR THIEVES who took a car
from Aidanfield on a joyride on
Tuesday morning found that
dumping it in Lyttelton Harbour
was harder than they thought.
The stolen car was reported
to police at 5.45am after it was
found dangling precariously over
the water’s edge in the Naval
Point parking area, near the
Godley Quay, Cyrus Williams
Quay intersection in Lyttelton.
Lyttelton Police supervisor
Sergeant Franco Lovrich said he
suspected the car would have
been taken by youths, however,
police had no suspects as yet.
“It’s been taken for a bit of joyride
and it’s done a few wheelies
and stuff down at the boat ramp
Sergeant Lovrich said it appeared
the car had been left in
gear with the “intention of driving
it off the edge.”
However, that plan did not
work out, Sergeant Lovrich said,
with the car prevented from entering
the water by the rocks and
the angle of the descent.
The vehicle had since been
removed. As the owner was
overseas, family members
arranged to have it towed.
For high school students
choosing a future career
can be a daunting prospect. To
give students a chance to try
before they buy, Ara Institute of
Canterbury has expanded their
programme of taster sessions
to cater for juniors picking their
NCEA subjects, as well as seniors
figuring out their next steps.
Imagine trying out being a web
developer for a day, a performing
arts student at NASDA, or an
engineer. Experience Ara is aiding students to
close the gap between reading about something
and actually giving it a go.
The Experience Ara programme has proven
hugely successful in providing high school
students with a taste of tertiary study, and a
hands-on way to explore their interests. In
2018, 2344 students have registered to 269
events offered in a range of tertiary subjects
including Science, Creative Industries, Trades
and Business. Out of all the young people who
registered for Experience Ara 2018, 911 have
applied to study with Ara in 2019.
Due to high demand, the new programme
for 2019 has even more occurrences and a
broader variety of events. For 2019, Ara has
proposed 242 events, with exciting new additions
such as Introduction to Medical Imaging,
Diving into Data Computing Taster and Builder
for a Day.
Emma West, Ara Engagement Manager said,
“By providing a range of experiential opportunities,
in subject areas that align with employment
opportunities, we are playing a part in
helping young people to make big decisions.”
A year 13 from Catholic Cathedral College
who attended the Re: Structure Portfolio
Workshop for students interested in architecture
said they appreciated the personal
guidance that it gave them, and they now
have “clear knowledge of the course they want
to take.”
Ara is not only the largest tertiary institute in
the South Island, it’s also one of the top-ranking
institutes in New Zealand, with one of the
highest course completion rates in the country.
Students can register online to attend junior
taster sessions (years 9-10), senior taster
sessions (years 11-13), holiday workshops,
and NCEA credited STAR courses.
Broughton concerned
over e-scooter danger
SAFETY FIRST: Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board
deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton does not want Lime scooters
on the middle of roads.
• By Anan Zaki
WELL-KNOWN local body
politician Helen Broughton
says she is concerned about
Lime scooters being ridden
dangerously.
The Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
deputy chairwoman spotted
three Christchurch Boys’ High
School students and a girl
speeding down the middle
of Rata St, Riccarton, on the
scooters on October 16.
Lime scooters are only
allowed to be used by people
aged over 18.
She emailed Mayor Lianne
Dalziel, city councillors and her
fellow board members to point
out the teenagers “dangerous”
actions.
The teens appeared about 16,
Ms Broughton said.
Lime scooters should not
be driven in the middle of the
road, she said.
“They were going at top speed
down the middle of the road,
and if cars had been turning
into Rata St there could have
been a serious accident, where
the teenagers could have been
badly-injured,” Ms Broughton
said.
“I am bringing this to your
attention so you are aware of
some foolhardy practices by
teenagers under-18,” she said.
CBHS principal Nic Hill
said he was unable to identify
the four boys involved and
said the incident happened on
the senior students’ last day of
school. He said Lime scooters
are not the issue.
“I don’t know if more controls
are going to stop foolhardy
practices by teenagers.”
“But when we see something
wrong we should do something
about it and we commend
Helen for trying to look out
for other people,” Mr Hill
said.
The school has not “really
talked about” Lime scooters he
said.
“We’ve told the kids that they
can’t come through school,” Mr
Hill said.
“But let’s not blame e-scooters
for teenagers making foolhardy
decisions because their brains
don’t quite work properly at the
moment.”
In the first two weeks since
their October 15 launch, the
city council reported more than
65,000 Lime trips by more than
27,000 riders.
Historic events a time to ponder our past
Halswell
Residents’
Association
secretary
David Hawke
remembers
two historic
events
This is a story
about living and listening to the
past in our present.
On October 15, Halswell
Residents’ Association and
Waipuna-Halswell/Hornby/Riccarton
Community Board hosted
the inauguration of a memorial
on the 65th anniversary of a horrendous
crash at Wigram air base
that killed seven RNZAF airmen.
We were touched that over 70
people chose to come along to
mark the occasion. Now, following
another Halswell Residents’
Association initiative, we are
hoping that some streets in a
new subdivision will be named
after soldiers from Halswell who
died in the 1914-18 war. And
city-wide, we have just finished
celebrating Heritage Week.
All of these events point to an
interest in pondering our past
and the people who came before
us.
But there is more.
The 137th anniversary of the
ghastly invasion by the New Zealand
Government of the peaceful
settlement of Parihaka has just
passed, and Rachel Buchanan has
written a book Ko Taranaki te
maunga (or, loosely, “Taranaki is
my mountain”).
The outstanding element of
the book, in my view, is how she
shows that the consequences
of an event such as Parihaka
travel down the generations.
She chooses not to promote an
attitude of revenge or retribution,
but instead emphasises shame
and how to address it.
The descendants of the people
who lived at Parihaka feel shame
that their ancestors were victims,
and the invaders’ descendants
feel shame that their ancestors
could be part of such an atrocity.
The eminent American
political scientist Katherine
Cramer has written extensively
on how resentment of others has
driven the plunge in US politics.
Her recipe – start by listening to
the stories of others, especially of
others not like you, people who
have travelled a different path
Tuesday November 13 2018 11
A BURNSIDE High School
student is set to star in the first
opera put on by Christchurch
residents since the earthquakes.
Grant Weihs will play the title
role in the nativity story Amahl
and the Night Visitors
on Saturday.
The production
marks the first time
in almost 10 years
– when The Magic
Flute was on stage in
2009 – that a locallyproduced
opera
has been offered
to Christchurch
audiences.
United States
composer Gian Carlo Menotti
wrote Amahl and the Night
Visitors in the early 1950s. It is
centred around a young disabled
boy called Amahl, who is played
by Grant.
The show is a one-act opera
about Amahl, who has a
fondness for tall tales.
His mother has to live with his
active imagination, but is also at
her wit’s end trying to put food
on the table and secure a future
SCHOOLS
Burnside student in
lead role as opera
returns to the city
for her son. After Amahl tells
his mother about a star “bigger
than a window” over their roof,
she retires to bed, but then three
kings turn up on the doorstep
looking for somewhere to stay
for the night. They are
fed and entertained, and
offer Amahl a chance for a
better life.
The play will have a
family-oriented matinee
performance at 2pm on
Saturday.
It will then be on stage
again during an evening
programme of handpicked
seasonal choral
Grant Weihs
music starting at 7.30pm at
the The Piano: Centre for Music
and the Arts.
Produced and directed by
Broadway veteran Ravil Atlas,
and featuring the Atlas Voices
Ensemble, the evening will end
with the New Zealand premier of
Hodie by US composer Z Randall
Stroope, complete with brass
octet, organ and percussion.
•Tickets for both
performances are available
at http://atlasvoices.nz.
Walk your dog to the moon and back
EVERY MAN and his dog is
being encouraged to walk the
distance from the earth to the
moon to raise funds for animal
welfare.
The SPCA’s newly-created
nationwide event Walk Your
Dog to the Moon will see owners
and their dogs walk the distance
of 385,500km to help raise funds
for animals in need.
Registered moonwalkers in the
city attended an official launch
event at the beginning of the
month at Bottle Lake Forrest
and were attended by about 150
people.
As of last week, participants
have fundraised about $98,000
for the organisation through
individual fundraising pages.
The launch event was set up by
Fusion Events and had moonwalkers
head into the forest and
over the sand dunes.
There was a race village with
a “doggie rest station,” a Bean
Supreme barbecue, live music
and water stations.
The fundraiser comes as new
research conducted by SPCA
revealed many Kiwi dog owners
aren’t doing as much as they can
to look after a family pet.
Findings showed 60 per cent
of New Zealanders think a dog
should be walked at least seven
times a week.
But in reality, fewer than 30
EXERCISE: Ace and Charlie walking at Bottle Lake Forrest. Ace
is a furrbassador for the SPCA’s Walk Your Dog to the Moon
event. He was rescued by SPCA and readopted.
per cent of Kiwi dog owners are
actually doing this.
SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen
said the goal of the fundraiser is
to raise money to help animals
in trouble.
“It’s also about encouraging
dog owners to get out walking
more. This research has shown
us that Kiwis’ expectations
around dog walking are very different
from the reality,” she said.
The SPCA is aiming to raise
at least $150,000 nationwide
through the event. All funds
donated will be used to directly
help rescue, rehabilitate and
rehome animals.
A $12 registration fee applies
and each participant will receive
a doggy pedometer, doggy bandana
and a welcome pack.
SPORTS
POWER: St Thomas’ Caius Faatili was a big reason his team
qualified for the national Condor Sevens competition in
Auckland.
St Thomas’ aim to show
flair at Condor Sevens
• By Jacob Page
ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College sevens coach Jonny
Leo’o believes his team has the
flair and raw talent to compete
with the best at the national
tournament.
The Condor Sevens national
secondary school tournament
will features more than 100
teams across open boys and
girls grade as well as under-15s.
It runs from November 29
to December 2 at Auckland’s
Sacred Heart College.
St Thomas’ qualified for the
open grade along with Timaru
Boys’ High School. The two
teams played in the Canterbury
regional final last month, with
TBHS winning 10-0.
“I believe it’s the first time
in a long time that we have
qualified, so now that we have, I
think the boys will take a lot of
confidence from it.”
Leo’o said his team has a
mix of talented rugby and
rugby league players and, while
meshing the styles was initially
challenging, it has created an
exciting brand of play.
BURNSIDE HIGH School track
cyclist Sami Donnelly is still
pinching herself over the stellar
12 months she’s had.
The 16-year-old was the
supreme winner at the school’s
sports awards
and also won a
Zonta award.
Sami was
the youngest
member of the
New Zealand
team at the
junior world
Sami
Donnelly
championships
in Switzerland.
Having won
gold at the Oceania under-19
women’s team pursuit last year,
Sami said she is eager to push her
claim to ride in endurance races
next season.
“I’m definitely more interested
in doing endurance races and
pushing myself that way.’
Sami is the daughter of former
Olympic team pursuit cyclist,
Nigel Donnelly, who competed
in 1988 and 1992 at Seoul and
Barcelona respectively. He won
a Commonwealth Games gold
medal at the same event in
Auckland in 1990.
Sami said she was motivated by
her dad’s achievements but also
wanted to follow her own path.
“I’ve always wanted to follow in
dad’s steps,” she said. “In year 6, I
remember having to do a project
on someone I admired and I
picked him.”
Sami said she played multiple
sports when she was younger
until she was in year 8 when she
decided she needed to prioritise.
“I played every sport
imaginable – basketball, netball,
water polo, hockey – until a
physio said my body was not
handling it so I decided to cut
back to hockey and cycling.”
Later that year, she watched her
brother Felix training and she
decided to give it a go,
“I’m aware of what dad
achieved and it does drive me to
be my best,” Sami said. “Having
said that, I want to do my own
thing and I have my own coach.
“Dad’s great at letting me do
my own thing but also knowing
when he can drop in some
knowledge.”
Sami said she wanted another
shot at the under-19 world
championships next year and
was keen to do more endurance
rides.
“Even when that pain hits,
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
Mr Garth, who has b en a
“Doing a l thi stuff and
Mr Garth hopes t own a
Mr Winder and his team, the
He said the cha lenge started
The preparation for this
“To get second behind Ireland
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
