Alliance Seed Cleaning
Association opened in November of
1957. For the first 20 years they
didn’t do much more than the
cleaning and treating of cereals.
Over the years there have
been many upgrades, always
growing to serve the community
better.
They now have a testing and
bagging facility that will handle
25 kg bags up to 750 kg mini
bulks. A 90 foot (70 tonne) scale
has been installed along with a
5,000 bushel per hour leg to
handle the large loads.
They can now inoculate peas
and are licensed to apply

There is always something new
when it comes to the Alliance based
shop, Main Street Medley.
The business specializes in a
number of unique services like
embroidery, signs, engraving, canvas
wraps, printing, full-colour heat
transfers, and custom T-Shirts.
They also use a direct-to-garment
printer for specialized orders and a
large scale printer that can print up
to a 4’ x 8’.

The Back 40 Button
Company was an idea that
spurred from the use of their
back room where they make
pinback buttons, button magnets,
and coasters.
Owner Laurie Fuller attributes
15 successful years in
business to the diverse
options they provide customers as
well as their consistent friendly
attitude.
“I think the diversity plus our customer
service – We have a lot of
repeat customers. We treat everybody
the same whether they order 1
item or 100. Each order is the same to
us,” said Fuller.
Currently four staff, including
Laurie, run the facility.
It all started when Laurie and her
husband became empty nesters,
eager to work together.
Laurie started with sublimation
and signage in the basement of their
home.
Eventually, Laurie’s husband
switched jobs in the oil company
where they wouldn’t allow wives on
the lease site.
This was where they bought the
current building they are in
now on main street, hence
the name ‘Main Street
Medley’.
Later, they bought the
Gas Co-op next door to
expand their business and
number of services.
“You never know what
you’ll find here. If you come
in one day it may not be
here the next and we might
not be getting any more in
so if you like it, you better
buy it,” said Fuller.

Big ‘Happy Face’
welcomes customers
Bill Rock and his wife Kim opened the
Amisk C-Store in May of 2013. They knew
there was a need for this type of convenience
store in the area so they decided to
fill that need.
The store is open from 6 am to 7 pm
daily. They provide the community with
basic groceries, take out foods and lots of
candy. The large variety of sandwiches
and subs, along with salads and hot dogs
are all homemade in-store. They also sell
homemade baking.
They like to be part of the community
events and provide the subs for the sub
day at the local elementary school.
The store has nine part-time employees.
Bill Rock is also the go-to plumber for
the area with six employees working for
him in the service part of that. He also
sells a small amount of plumbing supplies
at the back of the store.

was a teenager.
Seeing that there was
no book stores for a large
area around Castor she
decided that this was a
good time to go for her

Platypus.

purple, and her husband’s

Community demand filled
Eric and Justine Comeau recently
married last year with the intention
of living in the Consort area.
As they were making plans to say
‘I do’, they were also designing and
constructing a completely unique,
diversified liquor store – one unlike
anywhere in East Central Alberta.
There was no shortage of support
as both sides of the family were
useful in the vision of the new store.
“We thought about it for a long
time and then finally the time came
where the land was available
because we put it right beside the
hotel in town because we wanted
that lot. As soon as we heard there
was more than one person looking
for this lot, we jumped on it and
bought it,” said Eric.
Buffalo Trail liquor opened on
March 23, 2017 where they haven’t
looked back. The couple later married
in August.
Although a learning curve, the
pair have been innovative in their
approach to service, supporting a
new loyalty program where the more
you shop, the more you get back.
“The word is spreading and that’s
good,” Eric continued.
The Growler Bar serves draft beer
as well as other drinks on tap for
customers to explore.
The Alberta Gaming and LIquor
Commission (AGLC) said it was the
first one in the eastern corridor.
“There were a few things in our
stores that are best sellers for years
and this is our way of showing them
something else,” Eric said.
There is always four different
beers on tap while other times there
may be ciders or sangria or wine.
The growing Alberta craft beer
industry has significantly grown
making this bar a perfect way to
showcase local brews as well.
“With our store, the idea was to
bring something totally different to
such rural area period. We wanted to
bring in these thing that nobody was
seeing outside of like Red Deer. We’re
bringing in these new concepts, craft
beer, craft liquor and all these local
products to redefine the liquor
industry in Consort,” added Justine.
The Buffalo Trail Liquor Store is
open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on
Weekdays and 11 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on
Weekends.

1964 we came with absolutely
nothing and built this business to

It could be said that the Legacy
Pistol Range Inc. and the Alberta
Rangers is one of Paintearth County’s
best kept secrets!
Established on the ranch in 2015,
the range’s location is SW-18-35-11-W4,
along Lake Thelma Rd., just east of
RR#120.
The idea stemmed from the love of
western history - both factual and fictional,
a western lifestyle which we
cultivate with a deep-rooted fascination
for the shooting sports.
The thought behind using the
“Alberta Rangers” moniker for our
group goes back to the colourful time
in Alberta’s past (circa 1885) while
during a period of unrest amongst her
inhabitants, the Rocky Mountain
Rangers came together to help keep
the peace.
These rangers came from mixed
backgrounds. Some were cowboys
who came up here with the cattle
drives, others were storekeepers, exmounties,
ranchers, adventurers and
others with various stories. What they
all had in common was that they
could all shoot and they could all ride!
Although any serious actions were
not realized back in the day, we
thought their spirit was worth holding
onto and therefore celebrating.
We are promoting the Legacy Pistol
Range Inc., the home of the “Alberta
Rangers”, as a safe and fun environment
to gather and practice the
shooting sports including target practice,
rifle shooting up to a 308, small

Jason and Deedee Smith are
business partners of Enguard PC
Ltd., a company with a drive to do
better not only for themselves but
the community of Hanna.
Enguard PC Ltd. offers both
retail and computer sales as well as
repairs, technology recycling, and
workshops.
Jason’s computer career began as
a lumber yard hand. The company
brought in a computer system
which he found he understood how
it worked.
“I just ran through the manuals
and asked what was going on and
was able to implement their
system,” said Jason.
The company that sold the
system then hired Jason as a support
staff and software trainer. He
harbours both retail experience
and computer experience from
these jobs.
This idea eventually started as a
small business in Jason’s mother’s
basement before moving to Hanna
where he worked out of a single
office focusing on on-site repairs.
This single office space grew to
50 square feet of retail floor space
and then again to 1,100 square feet.
November 15th, 2011 was the day
EnGuard opened to the public in
Hanna.
Jason chose Hanna because the
busy bustle of Edmonton was hard
to break into and his son lived in
Hanna.
He came by for a weekend visit
and helped various people with
their computer problems around
town.
Jason realized there was a large
need and an opportunity for these
services in and around Hanna.
The company now offers one-onone
training for those that are not
computer literate or have simple
questions that may need additional
guidance.
Clients are asked to provide a list
of questions they would like
answered and then Jason will come
up with an itinerary to focus on the
topics they want to cover when he
meets with a client.
Clients have the option of coming
to the business with their tech or
can have Jason arrive at their
home for support when doing this
one-on-one session.
From computer safety to
uploading photos onto a USB stick,
EnGuard PC Ltd. will do their best
to help.
Over-the-counter training is
another style of education used
when discussing computer issues
with clientele.
“It’s just a basic understanding
that people need and we do a lot of
over-the-counter training we call
it, where somebody comes in and
they have one little question and
half an hour later they have a
better understanding of it. For
example, how the internet works or
what a browser is,” said Jason.
“We’ve gone up as complex as
dealing with many different
accounting software packages.”
This line of work is something
that just comes natural to Jason.
“It’s simple, it doesn’t stress me
out, I don’t panic over problems.
Not computer related anyways,”
laughed Jason. “It works, it clicks
well.”
He used to get in trouble by
‘messing around’ with the school
computers while in highschool and
hasn’t stopped dealing with computers
since.
A favourite part of his passion is
when he can build new computers
from a large number of parts which
gives him a sense of
accomplishment.
The couple also loves to help customers
reach their goals.
As for community spirit, the
couple have dived into community
initiatives, offering support wherever
they can.
Jason is the president of the local
food bank where EnGuard conducts
at least 3 food drives a year.
They also contribute to the
library summer reading program
and the Chamber of Commerce
where Jason just stepped down
from the board after five years of
service.
“If you come to me and you are
running a local program, we’ll help
you out in some way. We won’t give
you cash but we would offer a
product or prize,” he said.

The Irma Home and Garden
Centre was a lumber store when Ron
and Aletha Dempsey purchased it in
1978.
It continued on as a lumber store
through the boom of the 1980’s
with lawn and garden supplies
only a small part of it. When the
lumber business started to die
out, Ron and his wife Aletha
decided to expand the garden
centre.
Aletha passed away 13 years
ago but Ron continued to grow
and expand the business.
Ron does not like to buy in
large quantities, he likes to buy
in ‘ones and twos’ so that each
customer can know that they are
getting something unique.
The store has over 5000 square feet
of display space. This is needed for
the large amount of merchandise
that it has.

Sharleen Chevraux opened Crafty
Creations Quilt Gallery in 2010.
She sells patterns, quilt kits,
fabrics, the full line of DMC
embroidery threads and all sorts
of notions and crafty things.
She even has a few of her own
beautiful quilts for sale.
Sharleen got her passion for
quilting from her mother who was
a quilter right up to the age of 97
when her failing eyesight forced
her to give it up.
Sharleen has passed the joy of
quilting to her granddaughter and
she now gives quilting lessons in
her store which spreads the
passion even further.
The lessons can be on a drop
in basis if you wish, just pop in
and get help with one of your
projects or work on one of the
many charity projects that
Sharleen has going on at the store.
They make fidget quilts for
Alzheimer patients and donate
them to six different hospitals.
They also have a group of
volunteers who gather together and
make quilts to donate to Bags of Love.

Lougheed has something to offer in all seasons
Incorporated in 1911, the Village was named
after the late Senator James Lougheed, grandfather
to former Premier Peter Lougheed.
“The Friendly Village”, with a population of
almost 300, located along Hwy 13 and on the
Canadian Pacific Railway, is an hour’s drive east
of Camrose, and two hours southeast of
Edmonton.
Lougheed’s trading area has a diversified economic
base, with traditional roots in both
agriculture and the oilfield industry, and has
promise for future growth and prosperity.
Lougheed is home to both commercial and
industrial business, providing products and services
to the community and area, including a
grocery store, banking, Diamond J Bakery, costume
rental, special events rental, machinery
dealerships, agri-retail business, and water well
drilling.
The Lougheed Seed Cleaning Plant has built a
new modernized facility, opening in 2017 and
greatly adding to the northern horizon of the
village.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in
Lougheed is named in remembrance of Victoria
Cross recipient, C.J. Kinross . Private Kinross’s
citation shows that “throughout the day he
showed marvelous coolness and courage,
fighting with the utmost aggressiveness against
heavy odds until he was seriously wounded.”
Private Kinross single-handedly knocked out a
machine gun crew.
The Legion Hall’s “Wall of Honour” proudly
displays the framed photos and biographies of
over 60 Veterans from the Lougheed area,
including Victoria Cross recipient C.J. Kinross,
immortalizing those who participated in the
World Wars. The Wall of Honour is a
unique and cherished statement to the
pride of this community and the honour
bestowed for our military residents.

For residents and visitors alike, the Village
has something to offer in all seasons.
Spring, summer and fall, you will find two
campgrounds and picnic locations, trout
pond, model aircraft field, museum, four
regulation baseball diamonds, a walking
trail and an annual Agricultural Fair held
in August.
During the winter, the “hub of activity” is
at the Lougheed Field House with its
24-hour gym and a variety of ongoing activities
and indoor sports, as well as the curling
rink. Olympic champion, Kevin Martin
started his curling career in Lougheed
throwing rocks many nights after school.
Lougheed has a very active community life,
with ample opportunity to participate in the
Village’s many community service organizations
and social groups. Bingos, socials and other community
events are held in the community hall, as
well as the Seniors’ Centre and Lions’ Den.
The Community Society hosts an old-fashion
Christmas every year. On a Saturday before
Christmas, you can join the fun for a tree
decorating contest, old fashioned games,
exhibits, Mrs. Claus has a kitchen with
goodies and, of course, Santa Claus makes
an appearance to present the children with
goodies.
Within the last few years, Lougheed has
become home to the largest population of
‘Mexican Mennonites’ within the Flagstaff
region. To accommodate this population as
they deal with their new Canadian home,
the citizens of Lougheed have initiated
events and enterprises to ensure a smooth
transition to their new chosen home.

Friday Night Buffets a new favourite
With a passion for cooking from a
young age, Brenda (Murray) Brinson
began her journey being born and
raised on a farm in Saskatchewan.
Her mother and grandmother
inspired her to follow her dreams
where her career in the food industry
began at only 16-years-old.
Brinson moved to Airdrie when
she was 19. She worked under a chef
in a local restaurant.
This was where she
gained a wealth of other
useful skills like bartending,
waiting tables
and, of course, dish
washing.
In 1990, she made the
decision to move to Stettler
in pursuit of continued
food experience working
at the Town Pump,
Smitty’s Restaurant and
the Stettler Hospital.
By 1994, she received
her Journeyman Ticket
with a red seal; this
achievement being an interprovincial
standard of excellence that is
recognized across Canada.
Brinson owned and operated the
Sandwich Patch from 1994 to 1998
then began her catering side of the
business in 2001.
The summer of 2013 was a memorable
one for Brinson as she was able
to purchase Maggie Joe’s Catering
Cafe on Main Street in Stettler.

Steady First Year of Business
Stettler Building Supplies has seen a
gradual yet exciting increase in customer
clientele since their opening in
February over 8 months.
“I call it a good year. It’s been a year
of growth from starting off in the
winter time with almost no sales up to a
few houses on the go,” said Ralph
Toews, owner of the new store.
Toews had always dreamed of
owning a supply store since his 15 years
of past experience lies in the construction
industry.

Bringing
Amazing
Meals
Home
Any busy person knows that a
good, hearty meal can sometimes be
hard to come by.
That is why the owner of Teresa’s
in Donalda came up with the more
than perfect solution to this problem.
Teresa Kneeland has been surrounded
by food her entire life. She
was raised on a farm near Donalda
where her parents operated a small
grain and hog operation. Cows and
chickens would often roam about the
property as well.
A large garden would help feed her
relatively large family as money
would run tight.
As a young girl, she associated food
with both happy and sad memories.
“I loved the memories, smiles and
laughter that form around a shared
meal,” said Kneeland. “One of my
fondest memories as a child was
when the harvest crew would gather
in a dusty field to eat. We would sit,
eat and laugh. I loved those moments,
the togetherness. Many rural folks
will tell you the same
stories.”
Her mother had a job
off the farm so it was up
to Teresa to start
cooking. She was
responsible for canning,
cooking, and baking as
early as 10-years-old.
She never pursued
post secondary education
in foods but still
followed her passion,
creating unique and
colourful dishes that are made of
mostly local ingredients.
“We use as many local products as
we can. We deal a lot with the hutterite
colony out here and they’ve
been amazing to me. Local butcher
shop in Bashaw we deal with as well.
We try to source as many local products
as we can,” she continued.
She was a single mom who was the
owner of a grocery store which failed
but that failure pointed her in the
direction of following her passion for
cooking.
She dabbled in catering and then
worked out of her own kitchen before
entering cooking venues. In 2012, she
built the building she works out of
today.
To her, a dish is not just a meal but
an experience in and of itself.
“I gauge my success on a product
through how people talk about it
after and if they aren’t saying it’s
wonderful and amazing I go back to
the drawing board. I make sure I get
that reaction and we do. My staff is
amazing as well,” said Kneeland.
This past year was when the business
headed in the direction of frozen
meals.
They take all main and side dishes
from the catering menu and put them
into frozen food containers that
anyone can take home.
“It started out that I was making a
little bit for seniors around Stettler
because they don’t eat well and it
kills me if people don’t eat well,”
laughed Kneeland. “I dabbled in it
and then last year I had my business
partner approach me and asked me if
I wanted to dive into this and we did.”
Kneeland has a goal of having multiple
stations set up across Alberta
within 5 years.

They run a junior high
cooking program for the
school in Donalda where

Maxine Williams-Herbert, a

and owner of Maximum Hearing, is
not new to living in a rural community
having grown up on a small
farm in the Edmonton area.
After graduating High School, she

In 1997, Williams-Herbert accepted
a position to open a new clinic in
Calgary.
Her last position was at the
Calgary Ear Centre where she
worked with a team of specialists
providing a one-stop approach to
hearing health care, offering everything
from counselling, Tinnitus
management, hearing aids, to surgical
solutions for clients.
Although she found this work
extremely rewarding, she also found
the pace of an ever-growing city quite
overwhelming and longed to slow

Optical Coherence Tomographer and our
retina imaging system (California
Optomap) will provide specialized testing
for glaucoma and other ocular diseases.
We now have an exam room that allows
for wheel chair accessible eye exams.
This means there will be less transferring
of these patients using wheelchairs
into the exam room chair than previous.
As we want to offer “one-stop shop” service,
we also offer Vision Therapy; we
proudly employ the first Canadian certified
vision therapist from Alberta.

Dr David Weeks has been serving
the Consort community now for 23
years. The Rangeland Veterinary
Clinic (1995) Ltd. located just off of
highway 41, offers full veterinary
services medical and surgical, for
both large and small animals.
Dr. Weeks has been through the
BSE crisis alongside the cattle
producers.

The crisis crippled the cattle
industry and changed the way a lot of
veterinarians work with the cattle.
While the clinics still handle the
individual larger animal cases the
major emphasis is on working with
herds.
With the goal of being able to provide
the eastern side of the province
of Alberta with veterinary services
with more vets and increased staff
