cables to share many common design and physical elements, even though the actual electrical connectors will
clearly be different.
Since DisplayPort-enabled platforms are aimed more as the PC application segment, and are reaching the market
substantially later than HDMI based units (i.e., HDTV’s), one can expect the overall market for DisplayPort AOCs
to be much smaller than HDMI AOCs. In addition, many DisplayPort displays are intended for local desktop PCs,
which inherently use shorter cables, and thus may be better served by copper cables in many instances. This
relationship between demand for AOCs in HDMI vs. DisplayPort is well illustrated in the following Figures 5-6.
The next two figures illustrate the segmentation of HDMI and DisplayPort AOCs based on overall bus speed in
years 2009 and 2013. Since today’s market is entirely in the ~10Gbps spec range, all AOCs shipping are destined to
be limited to that speed. However, as the two SIGs plan introduction of much faster versions of their interfaces over
the next two years, we expect to see a substantial increase in overall AOC demand for both bus types, with a
stronger emphasis on the 20Gbps versions where copper is less capable of serving the overall needs of the customer
base.
