Interested in watching a live theatrical performance
or musical? Have a budding performer in your family?
Want to hone your artistic skills and help build or
design stage sets? Then Houston County is the place
to be! Both Perry and Warner Robins boast thriving
amateur community theaters featuring quality,
family-oriented entertainment from one act plays
and dramas to comedies and musicals.
Perry Players Community Theater
“Perry Players started as an idea and a group of
about 15 people and has grown into a network of
people by the hundreds over the years, all dedicated to
bringing quality theater to the area,” explains Hunter
Hufnagel, artistic director for the Perry Players.
The Perry Players Community Theater was
founded in the early 1980s as a repertory company
for and by amateur theater enthusiasts in the Perry
area. Their goal was to offer high-quality, familyoriented
entertainment and cultural activities to
people throughout the Middle Georgia area, as well
as provide an environment where fledgling and
seasoned performers could practice and grow in their
craft. In the beginning, the group produced “anything
and everything”—sketches, skits, one act plays, full
length dramas and comedies—utilizing whatever
local venues they could find to showcase their acting
and design talents.
“The founding group didn’t have a dedicated place
to put on shows, rehearsals, and so forth so they
used places like Sally Stanley’s Dance Studio, the
auditorium at Perry High School, and even Fort Valley
State University for plays. Members would build the
stage sets in their garages…wherever was available,”
says Hufnagel.
