Houston County
Don’t call us that Texas city name
Have you reached your destination here in
Houston County, or are you just staying over?
Whichever your answer is, this free guide was
prepared just for you to help you have a closer
look at what Houston County has to offer.
Located in the heart of Georgia, Houston
County was the 51st county formed in Georgia
and was created in 1821 through a treaty
signed with the Creek Indians. The county
was named for Gov. John Houstoun and was
originally spelled “Houstoun.” Over time the
spelling of the county’s name changed to
Houston County, though the pronunciation,
House-ton, stayed the same. Perry, the county
seat and geographic center of the state of
Georgia, was incorporated in 1824 as Houston’s
first official town.
Houston County is also a great place to raise
a family. In fact, in 2009, Warner Robins was
recognized by Business Week as the “best city
in Georgia to raise a family.” In 2015, Perry was
recognized by onlyinyourstate.com as the third
“happiest city to live in.”
Ranked as one of the fastest-growing
counties in Georgia, Houston County has
grown in population from 105,808 in 1998 to
a population in 2014 of 149,111, according
to the United States Census Bureau. Houston
County is a good place to do business —
recently designated as one of Georgia’s
Entrepreneur Friendly Communities by the
Georgia Department of Economic Development.
“Inc. Magazine” ranked Warner Robins as one
of the top 100 places to do business. With its
strategic location in the center of the state and
proximity to Interstate 75, Interstate 16 and 10
U.S. and state highways crisscrossing through
the county, local companies and industries
have convenient access to the entire Eastern
seaboard. The Perry-Houston County Airport
offers a 5,000-foot runway for small planes and
corporate jets.
Houston County’s favorable climate makes
it an ideal place to stop, shop, stay and play a
while. Houston County’s warmest month on
average occurs in July with highs in the low
to mid 90s and lows in the 70s. The average
coolest month is typically in January with highs
in the upper 50s and lows in the low to mid
30s. July is on record as the month with the
most precipitation with January through March
following closely behind. Snow and ice are a
rarity but have occurred between January and
March.
It does not matter if you are staying in the
“International City” of Warner Robins, the
rapidly growing shoppers’ mecca of Centerville,
or the traditional Southern small town of Perry;
Houston County brings the best of the new
and old South together. Houston County is the
home of Robins Air Force Base, which offers the
exciting Museum of Aviation. Houston County is
also home to the Georgia National Fairgrounds,
which attracts over half a million of people
every October for the fair, and also has yearround
events such as horse shows, dog shows,
rodeos and major exhibitions.
We’re proud to be known as one of Georgia’s
most progressive counties, and we are just as
proud of our agricultural history, something
you cannot really see from the Interstate. So
take time and enjoy the side roads — you may
find an antique shop along the way or various
specialty boutiques and homemade meals at
small-town restaurants.
So give Houston County a try — just don’t
pronounce it the same as that city in Texas.
Never forget
where you
came from
By KRISTIN MORIARTY
HHJ Staff Writer
While Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and U.S. Senator
David Perdue have served in political office for several years,
one thing that never changes for them, as cousins, is never
forgetting where they came from. In doing so, both agree that
it has led them to blessings from their life lessons and family
roots of meaningful, purposeful work.
said. “Both of our mothers were longstanding teachers in the
Houston County School System and had proper expectations
of us. Our fathers had very high expectations of us as well. We
would have good grades, but it was always, why couldn’t you do
better? So we were always improving in a way that drove us in
positive way to be the very best you could in all you did.”
Secretary Perdue was born at Doctor Gallemore’s Clinic in
Downtown Perry and raised in Bonaire. He attended three
elementary schools due to the county’s growth and rearranging
of school districts, Westside Elementary, Lindsey Elementary,
and C.B. Watson Elementary. He went on to Warner Robins
Junior High and then graduated from Warner Robins High
School.
Senator Perdue was born in Macon, Georgia and raised in
Warner Robins. He attended Lindsey Elementary, Westside
Elementary, Northside Junior High, and graduated from
Northside High School. The two recall memories of growing up
together.
“We come from a big extended family,” Sen. Perdue said. “No
matter what, we always got together every chance we had. But
I mainly would spend my summers with Sonny on his father’s
farm. If you look in the Webster’s Dictionary for the definition
of responsibility you will find a picture of Sonny. I remember
watching Sonny at a really young age in the field working, and
then straight from there he would put on his uniform to go to
little league practice. The way we grew up and the principals we
were embedded with at an early age gave us degree to never
forget where we came from. And I think that’s really important
with public service.”
Both Sec. Perdue and Sen. Perdue’s mothers retired after
teaching for over 40 years in the Houston County School
System. Sen. Perdue’s father was also a teacher, principal, and
was the School Superintendent for several years. Sec. Perdue’s
“David and I grew up in that era of the glory years of the
1950s and 1960s where you did whatever it took,” Sec. Perdue father operated a dairy and diversified row crop farm.
After graduating high school, Sec. Perdue went on to the
University of Georgia where he graduated with a doctorate in
veterinary medicine. He also served in the United States Air Force
working his way to the rank of captain. Following his military
service, he became a small business owner concentrating in
agribusiness and transportation; those businesses have grown
to include several locations across the southeast.
during his time there.
instilled in David
Perdue at school and
school superintendent.
Sen. Perdue went on to Georgia Institute of Technology
where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
Later on he earned his second degree from Georgia Institute of
Technology, a master’s in Operations Research. He served as
an executive for leading international companies. As Senior Vice
President of Asia Operations for Sara Lee, Perdue established
the company’s first Asia headquarters, was President and
CEO of the Reebok brand, was credited with revitalizing the
athletic brand, and as Chairman and CEO of Dollar General, he
oversaw the company’s expansion from 5,900 to 8,500 stores
nationwide, creating thousands of quality jobs. While at Dollar
General, he became heavily involved in literacy and served
as Chairman of the National Commission on Literacy and
Workforce Development.
thus far to serve as Secretary of Agriculture.”
As a two-term governor of Georgia, Sec. Perdue was credited
with transforming a budget deficit into a surplus, dramatically
increasing the student performance in public schools, and
fostering an economic environment that allowed employers
to flourish and manufacturers and agricultural producers to
achieve record levels of exports. He reformed state budget
priorities, helped Georgians create more than 200,000 new
jobs, and promoted his home state around the world to attract
new businesses.
Sen. Perdue never ran for any type of office until running for
the United States Senate, where he was first elected in 2014.
Both never really thought about getting involved in the
political world nor ever imagined serving on the national level
together. Sec. Perdue said his first office of public services was
on the Houston County Planning and Zoning Board.
“In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, Houston County
was growing by leaps and bounds,” Sec. Perdue said. “I was
asked during that time if I would be interested in serving on
the planning and zoning board. At first I was hesitant, but
nonetheless, it was a great experience and the best example
of learning to listen to people and hear passion about their
homes. Then I decided to run for the state senate in 1990, to
which I served 11 years, and then ran for governor in 2001. I
served two terms as governor. It was a difficult time during the
economy, but we remained focused and came out strong. Last
year I was minding my business when President Trump called
(he said laughing). But it has truly been an amazing experience
10
At Home in Houston County
“I called Sonny and drove up to his operation in Bonaire, when
the seat in the Senate became open,” Sen. Perdue said. “I told
him he needed to consider running for senate, and that we
need someone with the experience you have. Well, he told me
he didn’t feel led to do so, but then he said I should consider
running. The next thing Sonny told me stuck with me, he said, “I
will tell you this, nobody knows what somebody else ought to
do but you should think about this and pray about it.” I had been
watching the budget since 2001. I had some major concerns
about the debt. Three weeks later my wife Bonnie came to me
and said running for the Senate was something she thought I
needed to do. We were very blessed to get through election.”
While Sec. Perdue and Sen. Perdue never thought about
serving in politics they both have enjoyed serving their state
and country.
8-11 Perdues Story.indd 3 10/25/18 3:15 PM
“I knew David would do an amazing job in the Senate
and still does,” Sec. Perdue said. “He still continues to
advocate for things he came for. It’s a seductive place
up here and you can get compromised really quickly.
And I am just extremely proud of David holding true to
his promises for the people of Georgia. We take these
stewardships very seriously. We want to make our
family proud and people proud of morale and ethical
decisions we make for Georgia and the U.S.”
“I think one of the blessings that we have is, it’s
unusual to have two contemporary family members
involved in different ways like this,” Sen. Perdue
said. “I enjoy watching Sonny work in the President’s
cabinet. I watch how that leadership flows through
that room, and how it benefits of our farmers around
the country. Life experiences are what we bring up
here, but we also bring the humility. I see so many
people here in this town who kind of lose sight of
who they are and where they came from. Sonny and
I attend Bible studies led by our different committees
and it’s important. It keeps our feet on the ground and
lets us know who is really in charge here.”
Left – During Sonny’s
confirmation process for
Secretary of Agriculture,
he had “Georgia on his
mind” the whole time,
as he wore his favorite
boots with the state
emblem on them.
headed to Washington
D.C. for his new position,
Perry comes together in downtown
By Catherine Edgemon
Perry Main Street coordinator
For nearly two centuries, Perry’s central location at the “Crossroads
of Georgia” has made it a natural stopover for travelers.
More recently Perry has become the place “where Georgia comes
together,” due to its progressive leadership, excellent quality of life,
and ongoing economic development efforts.
“Perry is consistently rated among Georgia’s best small towns for
safety and quality of life,” Mayor James E. Faircloth Jr. said.
“Residents often refer to the community as ‘Perrydise’ because it is
an attractive place where you can live your entire life, raise a family,
have access to excellent educational opportunities and medical
services, start and grow a business, retire, and enjoy numerous parks
and leisure activities.”
Perry strives to honor its agrarian tradition, small town charm, and
rich heritage while growing business and industry. This dedication is
particularly evident downtown.
Locally-owned restaurants offer a range of delectable treats that
range from fine dining to traditional Southern fare and gourmet
sandwiches and salads.
A recently established restaurant district allows a customer to
take an alcoholic beverage in a plastic cup on public spaces within
the district, including sidewalks, rights of way, buildings, and public
parks between 11 a.m. and midnight daily.
“The restaurant district encourages local dining, enhances the
community’s quality of life, contributes to the festive atmosphere
downtown, and generates taxes to support government services,”
Perry Main Street Coordinator Catherine Edgemon said. “This
district will also facilitate restaurant recruitment downtown.”
The Perry Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is thrilled about the
exciting things happening in Perry’s thriving downtown, especially
the restaurant district, CVB Executive Director Allison Hamsley
stated. Many cities are establishing these districts, and the district is
vital to downtown’s continued growth.
“The establishment of the restaurant district downtown will be a
huge selling point for us when marketing to group tours, conventions,
families, and other groups, along with tourists looking for a quaint
and energetic city to visit,” Hamsley said. “It will attract visitors to
visit downtown Perry and linger longer, exploring everything that
Perry has to offer that makes us such a wonderful community to live
in and visit.”
The style of architecture and choice of building materials for newer
construction, such as the Walgreens and CVS, harken back to that
of older buildings, such as the former Houston County Bank, now
a surveyor’s office, and the tin-front building that once housed the
Toomer Funeral Home, which is now a private residence.
Many of the buildings are one-story, creating a more intimate scale
for shopping and congregating for events, and the numerous planters
and hanging baskets provide splashes of brilliant color.
Enchanting buildings are home to
boutiques, retail and service-oriented
businesses, professional offices, and a
bookstore. Property owners are increasingly investing in downtown
building rehabilitations to make downtown even more attractive and
vibrant.
“Several businesses downtown have outgrown their original
locations and moved to larger, renovated buildings,” Perry Main
Street Advisory Board Chairman Trish Cossart said, noting that her
own design business is among that group. “Downtown is so vibrant
that we have a low vacancy rate and property owners rarely advertise
a move-in-ready space for long.”
The community is excited about the city’s plans to construct a new
city hall on Carroll Street and Legacy Park at the intersection of Main
Street and Gen. Courtney Hodges Boulevard. These developments
will attract more pedestrian traffic to downtown by linking the historic
downtown with Rotary Centennial Park and increasing connectivity
and walkability downtown, as well as adding much-needed green
space to enhance curb appeal and outdoor activities.
Downtown is such a desirable location for businesses that the Perry
Area Chamber of Commerce moved its office from the Welcome
Center near Interstate 75 to 900 Carroll Street in 2018.
“Here (downtown) we are better able to connect with our members,
community, and visitors,” said Perry Area Chamber of Commerce
President Darlene McLendon. “This prominent location offers us the
opportunity to have new, front-line interaction with our downtown
visitors while expanding the marketing benefits of our members.
“When guests step through our doors, we want them to experience
a sense of welcome and excitement,” McLendon said. “We are thrilled
to host them and share examples of what makes us all ‘PERRY
PROUD!’”
Perry’s master and strategic plans zeroed in on improved signage
and connectivity along the corrid ors into downtown, targeted retail
and restaurant recruitment, increased support for existing small
businesses downtown, and enhanced parks and trails among the steps
to boost tourism and revenues in downtown.
Implementation of the Main Street Program and designation in
2015 as a Georgia Class Main Street community are propelling towards
these goals. Main Street, a program established by the National Trust
for Historic Preservation, utilizes historic preservation as a catalyst
for downtown revitalization.
Facade improvements, public arts programming, redevelopment of
vacant properties, a shop local initiative, and events hosted by various
groups have helped to turn downtown into the place where Perry
comes together.
Incentives to assist downtown business owners include facade
grants, crowd-funded micro-grants (BOOST), Rural Zone tax credits,
20
and a locally-funded revolving loan fund. Downtown businesses have
been awarded nearly $30,000 in grants in the last five years through
local programs.
The Perry Downtown Development Authority, or DDA, supports
the Main Street Program by concentrating on business recruitment
and expansion, diversifying the economic base, and locating viable
businesses in vacant buildings to fill voids in the community’s
business mix.
“Events, building renovations, and new restaurants that bring
nightlife to downtown are making downtown a destination again,”
DDA Chairman Steve Aydelott said. “The DDA is actively pursuing
redevelopment projects that will continue this progress.”
Annual events include community theater productions, musical
events, the Dogwood Festival, Peaches to the Beaches yard sale, New
Year’s Eve Buzzard Drop celebration, and a farmers market. The city
also sponsored a series of successful food truck events in 2018.
Events are one way to draw interstate travelers and fairgrounds
visitors into a revitalized downtown.
As Perry, which was incorporated in 1824, moves forward, it always
maintains its connection to the past.
Some say downtown is Perry’s soul, and the historical society is the
keeper of its memories.
Perry Area Historical Society President Ellie Loudermilk said
the historical society’s museum has become a destination for those
doing genealogical research and learning more about area history,
including the historic Central Dixie Highway, U.S. 41, on which
Perry is located.
The museum showcases local history, with displays on
residents who played important roles in Perry’s and the nation’s
history. Memorabilia belonging to Gen. Courtney Hodges, a Perry
native who rose from a private in the U.S. Army to the rank of fourstar
general and who commanded the first U.S. Army in northwest
Europe during World War II, is featured in the museum.
minimum $15 order) inside Perry’s city limits.
“Our mission is to provide our customers with the best Southern
sweets we can, using quality ingredients and always baking in small
batches,” owner Debbie Arledge said. “For that reason, our customers
are sometimes disappointed to discover their favorite item missing
from our shelves; however, we do take orders with a couple of days’
Arledge and her mother-in-law, Lora started out selling sweets at
Air Force One brings the President and
First Lady to Robins Air Force Base
United States President Donald Trump and First Lady
Melania Trump flew in to Robins Air Force Base on October
15, 2018 to look at the damage caused by Hurricane
Michael the previous week.
Colonel Lyle Drew, 78th Air Base Wing Commander, greeted
President Trump and First Lady Melania as they descended
from the plane. From there, the President and First
Lady, along with Governor Nathan Deal and Secretary of
Agriculture Sonny Perdue, proceeded in a motorcade.
President Trump visited the Macon Red Cross distribution
center and a farm on the edge of Bibb County. During his
visit he greeted first responders, farmers, and volunteers.
Prior to arriving at Robins Air Force Base, President Trump
and First Lady Trump visited the panhandle of Florida where
Hurricane Michael made a major impact of damage.
Stated on the White House website (https: /www.
whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/air-forceone/),
the President of the United States must be ready
to travel anywhere in the world on a moment’s notice.
Fortunately, modern Presidents have access to a variety of
transportation options — including flying aboard Air Force
One.
Today, Air Force One refers to one of two highly customized
Boeing 747-200B series aircraft, which carry the tail codes
28000 and 29000. The Air Force designation for the aircraft
is VC-25A.
Air Force One is one of the most recognizable symbols of
the presidency, spawning countless references not just in
American culture but across the world. Emblazoned with the
words “United States of America,” the American flag, and the
Seal of the President of the United States, it is an undeniable
presence wherever it flies.
Capable of refueling midair, Air Force One has unlimited
range and can carry the President wherever he needs to
travel. The onboard electronics are hardened to protect
against an electromagnetic pulse, and Air Force One is
equipped with advanced secure communications equipment,
allowing the aircraft to function as a mobile command
center in the event of an attack on the United States.
Inside, the President and his travel companions enjoy 4,000
square feet of floor space on three levels, including an
extensive suite for the President that features a large office,
lavatory, and conference room. Air Force One includes a
medical suite that can function as an operating room, and
a doctor is permanently on board. The plane’s two food
preparation galleys can feed 100 people at a time.
Air Force One also has quarters for those who accompany
the President, including senior advisors, Secret Service
officers, traveling press, and other guests. Several cargo
planes typically fly ahead of Air Force One to provide the
President with services needed in remote locations.
Air Force One is maintained and operated by the Presidential
Airlift Group, part of the White House Military Office. The
Airlift Group was founded in 1944 as the Presidential Pilot
Office at the direction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For
the next 15 years, various propeller-driven aircraft served
the President, until President Dwight D. Eisenhower flew to
Europe aboard VC-137A, a Boeing 707 Stratoliner, in August
1959.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy became the first
President to fly in a jet specifically built for presidential
use – a modified Boeing 707. Over the years, several other
jet aircraft have been used, with the first of the current
aircraft being delivered in 1990 during the administration of
President George H. W. Bush.
Why finding the right Real Estate Agent is critical!
As a lifelong resident of Bonaire and a Realtor®, I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about the local area
and market. I like to think that I can help every buyer and seller I come across! But in real estate, just as in other
relationships, sometimes finding the right “partner” can be a challenge.
Finding the right agent can really make a difference in your experience with your real estate transactions. Some
agents and companies are part of the “team” philosophy, where one agent secures the listings, and another takes care
of contracts, and another may only handle buyers. This can free up the initial agent to get more listings. Some agents
work great in this atmosphere.
I personally prefer to work individually with my buyers and sellers, helping them from the initial phone call to
the closing table. I want you to know that when you call for me, you get me! I do have a team of administrative
professionals at my office who help me get listings where they need to go and help assist with day to day tasks, but for
real conversations, negotiations and decisions big and small, you work with me.
I also believe that finding an agent that works well with your personality is critical. If you are a very detailed person
who wants to know what is happening each and every step of the way, finding an agent who is willing and able to
communicate consistently is important. If you are nervous buyer who really needs some reassurances, finding a
caring agent who listens to your concerns and considers your feelings will be important to you.
Of course, everyone will want a capable, trained, agent who is willing to work hard for you, but don’t be afraid to
ask potential agents some questions! Ask about the services they provide, how showings are handled, how is their
business handled if or when the agent is unavailable? Ask how often you can expect feedback or progress reports. If
you know that you need a specific trait in an agent or need specific skills, don’t be afraid to ask if they can meet those
needs.
As an agent who listens, if I know you expect feedback weekly, I can deliver that. If you only want me to call when
you get an offer, I can do that too! If everyone knows what to expect up front, it makes more a much smoother
transaction. Call me if you’d like to learn more about the personal service I can provide you if you are looking to buy
or sell!
TRANE ® Why Us?
Our split system air conditioning and
heat pump outdoor units all have fully
louvered panels to protect the outdoor
coil from damage, as well as tough
powder paint finishes and weatherresistant
screws.
We are the only manufacturer to offer
the patented all-aluminum Spine FinTM
outdoor coil. Our Spine FinTM outdoor
coils provide greater heat-transfer
capabilities, thus resulting in higher
efficiencies and greater resistance to
corrosion than traditional copper/
aluminum coils. Our XL20i model is
among the highest SEER ratings (cooling
efficiency) systems in the industry.
Trane’s gas furnaces feature selfdiagnostic
controls, a heavy steel
40-inch-high, insulated cabinet, hot
surface igniter, multi-port in-shot
burners, one-piece heat exchangers with
no welds, durable pre-painted finish,
and some of the highest efficiencies in
the industry, making Trane an obvious
choice. This reliability and efficiency
extends to our line of top performing
All-in-One systems, packaging all your
heating and cooling needs into one sleek
cabinet for versatile installation.
We are also the variable-speed airflow
experts. Our variable-speed furnaces and
revolutionary HyperionTM air handlers
can do things other manufacturer’s
products can’t, such as superb humidity
control with Comfort-RTM. This feature
allows the coil to get cold faster and the
furnace blower to slowly ramp up and
down, or to operate at 50 percent of
cooling speed in the “Fan On” position.
This provides greater air circulation and
filtration, even temperature distribution,
humidity control, and quiet performance.
Variable-speed motors are the most
efficient motors as well, increasing the
overall efficiency of your heating and air
conditioning system.
And when it comes to cleaner air, our
revolutionary Trane CleanEffectsTM is
the industry’s most effective whole-home
air filtration system, capable of removing
up to 99.98 percent of the allergens and
harmful particles from your family’s air.
Meet Us at a Game
By DONNELL SUGGS
HHJ Sports Editor
36
The game of football is sacred in the south; some say
more so than in any other region of this country. If nothing
else, it most certainly is in Houston County, Georgia, as the
county has five public school football programs that play
in three beautiful multi-functional stadiums in Perry and
Warner Robins that are most certainly worth a visit. The
three stadiums, Herb St. John Stadium on the campus of
Perry High School, Freedom Field and McConnell-Talbert
Stadium, both in Warner Robins, are the crown jewels of
Houston County football and the pride of the more than
150,000 residents in the county.
“All of our games are important, especially in county,” says
second-year Houston County High School head football
coach and athletic director Ryan Crawford, whose team has
three in-county games on their 2018 schedule.
The Perry High School Panthers play at Herb St. John
Stadium, and on any given Friday night during the fall and
winter, you can visit the edifice and see thousands of locals
tailgating in the parking lot, talking, and catching up on the
sidewalk outside of the stadium, to the right of the Perry
Panthers baseball and softball fields, and filling the home
bleachers. The stadium is named after the late Herb St. John,
At Home in Houston County
a former football coach, teacher, and administrator at Perry
High School. St. John did not grow up in Perry but he did
author the school’s football legacy as its first football coach.
From 1954-1969, St. John was the architect of Panther pride
and for that, his name is forever etched into the football
culture in Perry and Houston County.
The stadium may be an oldie-but-goodie, but the actual
field itself is new. Once grass, the field is now constructed of
turf and made its debut this summer for the Perry Panthers
preseason football game in early August.
McConnell-Talbert Stadium was once the home of four
Houston County football programs, with the home team,
Northside High School Eagles and Warner Robins High School
Demons sharing the field with both Houston County High
School and Veterans High School. For decades, the stadium,
named after LA McConnell, Sr. and Dr. Talbert, longtime
Warner Robins natives and residents, is now once again
solely the home for Eagles and Demons, and arguably one
of the best rivalries in the region. The two football programs
have been playing games at “The Mac” since the early 70’s
and regularly have packed houses of nearly 20,000 fans in
attendance. On Sept. 21, the Demons won the latest edition
36-38 football story.indd 1 10/25/18 3:29 PM
of the rivalry 39-34 in comeback fashion. If you are ever in
town during the fall, The Mac is most certainly one stop you
should make.
It means a lot to the folks in town too. “Ever since these
kids were able to walk, they have known how important
[those] games are,” said longtime Northside head football
coach and athletic director Kevin Kinsler.
The latest addition to the Houston County sports crown
is Freedom Field, the now three-year-old home of the
Houston County Bears and Veterans Warhawks football
teams. All turf with a massive parking lot and fantastic sight
lines throughout, Freedom Field is one of the best places to
watch football in all of middle Georgia.
On any given Friday night during the football season, a
guest to Freedom Field can take in a number of local sights
and sounds including the red, white, and blue water tower
just beyond the horizon or the POW/MIA chair of honor near
the entrance of the stadium to remind us all of the empty
seat left for the soldiers who have yet to return home. If the
At Home in Houston County 37
36-38 football story.indd 2 10/25/18 3:30 PM
name ‘Freedom Field’ leaves you to wonder
what the premise is, it’s simple, Warner Robins
is a military town (see Robins Air Force Base)
and proud of it.
From August to December, some of the
best football in the state of Georgia is played
in all three of Houston County’s stadiums. The
Westfield School Hornets also play football
at their on-campus facility, Marvin Arrington
Stadium, otherwise known as the ‘Hornets
Nest,’ in Perry.
in nature. We are here to help!
Private Individualized Yoga
Private Restorative Yoga
Suffering from lack of sleep, stress, and anxiety? Supportive Restorative
Yoga can help you finally relax. It has been shown to help reduce cortisol
levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and ease chronic pain.
Cold Laser Therapy
The Cold Lasers can be used on those who suffer from a variety of
conditions in order to eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms and increase
functionality. Cold Lasers (low-level lasers) stimulates the body’s natural
healing power. They have the most profound effect on the mitochondria of
the cell. Mitochondria are the energy producing centers of our cells. This
process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants. When cells absorb
this light energy, it initiates a series of events in the cell that stimulate the
healing process and eventually result in normalizing damaged or injured
tissue, a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema, and an overall reduction
in healing time. Cold Laser Therapy is quick, painless, has no side effects
or medication interactions, and has very few contraindications.
Neuromuscular Massage
NMT is highly effective for clients who present with chronic pain and is
often successful in reducing or eliminating long lasting pain. NMT offered
at APS is provided by James Carlan. James has perfected his own signature
style of massage. Neuromuscular therapy, combined with deep tissue
massage, and relaxation makes the session not only enjoyable but also
realigns the body to help relieve chronic pain.
Massage modalities:
Neuromuscular – Trigger point therapy, combined with deep tissue to
adjust, realign, alleviate pain, numbness, and tingling.
Swedish –Relaxation.
MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) – Stimulates the lymphatic system,
helps keep the immune system clean and functioning properly. Some uses
for MLD- edema, skin disorders, metabolic problems including sleeping
disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, Autoimmune, and more.
Y12SR
Yoga and 12 Step Recovery. Y12SR combines the practical tools of the
12 steps with the ancient wisdom of yoga. Meeting are open to anyone
one suffering with an addiction of any kind or to anyone coping with the
addictive behavior of others.
relapse prevention planning. Call APS today to find out how to bring
Article compliments of Beltone
Despite the fact that many people use hearing aids, many of us may not fully understand what they
actually do or how they work. We’ve uncovered seven facts you should know about these useful devices.
1. Hearing aids are not just for the elderly
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 466 million people across the world suffer from disabling hearing loss – 34 million of these
are children. It’s estimated that by 2050 more than 900 million people will be affected by disabling hearing loss. The WHO says that 1.1 billion young
people – between the age of 12 and 35 – are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to loud noise in recreational settings.
2. Hearing aids can adjust automatically to surrounding noise
Our ears do an amazing job of picking up important sounds – such as your dinner date’s conversation in a busy restaurant or a bored colleague
muttering under his breath at a meeting. Hearing aids can do exactly the same, and technological advancements have made them versatile in all
sound environments.
3. Hearing aids will not cure your hearing loss
A hearing aid will not make your hearing return to the way it once was and will not cure hearing loss. It can drastically improve your life after hearing
difficulties by allowing you to once again hear conversations, the TV or the radio. A hearing aid will definitely improve your quality of life.
4. You should not buy hearing aids online
Online shopping is incredibly convenient. You can get whatever you need at the click of a button. However, hearing aids require a much more
personal approach. You will need to ensure the hearing aid fits comfortably and the hearing aid also needs to be adjusted to your hearing preference.
This cannot be done over a purchase online. It’s best to do everything in person to get the perfect fit and sound quality you require.
5. You may need a hearing aid even if you have mild hearing loss
When it comes to hearing, people have different requirements. While some people with mild hearing loss don’t require a hearing aid, others find that
it makes a huge difference to them. If you are concerned or confused, don’t hesitate to make an appointment at your local Beltone to get a FREE
hearing exam.
6. You may need to wear two hearing aids even if you only experience hearing loss in one ear
You use both ears to hear, which means wearing two hearing aids may improve your hearing even more. According to the American Speech,
Language, Hearing Association, wearing two hearings aids “lets you figure out where sounds come from. This is called localisation. It helps in noisy
places and makes sounds more natural. Wearing two aids may make it easier to understand what others say.”
7. Hearing aids can be used in any lifestyle
As technology continues to improve, it means that no matter what type of lifestyle you currently enjoy, you’ll be able to find a suitable hearing aid.
Nowadays you can find hearing aids that are water resistant or waterproof. Just because you need to wear a hearing aid doesn’t mean you have to
change who you are and what you love to do!
Are you ready to take the first step to hearing better?
The Stripling’s story
dates back to over 50 years ago, when
James Stripling opened Stripling’s Sausage
Kitchen on his family farm in 1964. Growing
up he had a hand in managing his family’s
general store and this spawned his interest
in the retail butchery business. It was here
that he spent decades perfecting his sausage
recipe – using only the freshest country
sausage crafted from whole, hot hog – until
the day came to open “The Sausage Kitchen”
on the family farm.
It wasn’t long before demand grew, and
James’ business quickly expanded! What
started as a simple butcher shop flourish
ed into a little country store, offering
travelers & locals alike a taste of James’
famous sausage and a variety of other
specialty goods.
In 1978, James Stripling passed and
the family faced the tough decision of
continuing on with the store and James’
sausage-making tradition, or farming the
family’s land. James’ nephew, Jack Hardin
and his eldest son, Ricky, rolled the dice
and decided to continue on the tradition!
And so the story goes, with very little
knowledge, little cash and a lot of farming
debt, the family continued on the sausagemaking
tradition by moving the kitchen to
Cordele, GA and, in James’ honor, changing
the name to Stripling’s General Store!
The Hardins learned quickly they had made
the right decision, as Stripling’s sausage
grew in popularity each day! Today it
continues to serve as the backbone of the
family business, which proudly
produces over 300,000 pounds
of Stripling’s Sausage a year!
The offerings have continued
to expand, with now a variety
of flavors including mild,
medium, hot, and jalapeno-cheese, and a
well-received line of craft-made, peppery
beef jerky! Just over 20 years in the making,
Stripling’s Beef Jerky has become just as
popular as Stripling’s Sausage and has even
been recognized by Food & Wine Magazine!
In addition to the premium butcher-shop,
Stripling’s grocery line offers only the
best in locally-made jams, jellies and
sauces, as well as an array of sweets and
snacks.
With four locations across
the state of Georgia
(including one within the
new Agricultural Village
of Perry!), Stripling’s
continues to serve the
same time-tested recipes
from 1964. Visitors can
expect a one-stop-shop as each location
houses a premium butcher shop, an array of
ready-made sides, a hot bar, aisles of only
the best in locally-made jams, jellies and
44
sauces, snacks & more! Furthermore, guests
will always be greeted by the smiling faces
of Stripling’s staff.
Evolving with the times, Stripling’s General
Store now has the ability to ship products
nationwide and has a corporate fulfillment
team for year-round gifting. The team can
customize gift boxes or baskets as well as
manage the process from digital reminders
of special occasions to gift wrapping and
shipping presents to your address book.
Throughout the growth and changes, one
thing has remined constant of Stripling’s:
the quality of products and service. It is for
these reasons the Stripling’s saying rings
true: “You Never Sausage a Place!”
Mike Wells has owned the Perry business since 1993.
Mike grew up working in the family business when it was
by his father. At one time, they also had a tire shop in
downtown Perry.
Mike and his two brothers all worked in the family
it as a roadside service for 18 years. Now Mike employs
seven people and has a fleet of five trucks, three
rollbacks, one wrecker and one service truck to meet the
needs of anyone who calls them for help.
We provide tows, unlock vehicles, do jump starts, move
storage buildings and do tire changes, says Rae Wells,
Mike’s sister-in-law, who is also the company’s office
manager.
Rae adds that they work with several roadside
assistance services, such as AAA, Geico and Quest.
They also offer 24-hour service, because problems don’t
learn, make trades, and form business partnerships.
As the manager of both markets, Daley says she’s closely
involved with each but spends more time involved in the
Perry’s Farmers Market because of the close proximity to
Bodega Brew. Daley’s business partner Lori Freeman is more
involved with the farmers market in Warner Robins. “We
have to fundraise for the market, so we’re fundraising all
the time for both markets to pay people to manage it on the
day of,” said Daley, explaining how involved she is on a daily
basis. “We take debit, credit, and cash. The farmers take cash.
Some have their own credit card machines; many do not. As a
market, we have a credit card machine where people then can
get tokens and we run their credit card, so instead of giving
them cash, we give tokens to shop with at the market.”
By JAMES SIMPSON II
HHJ Staff Writer
While serving as the lead person at her burgeoning café Bodega
Brew in Perry, GA, Jodi Daley has had her hands dipped completely
in the Farmers market scene in both Perry and Warner Robins for
a couple of years now. The International City Farmers Market in
Warner Robins located at Perkins Field at the corner of Watson
Boulevard and Maple Street (Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
has developed into one of the premier venues in Warner Robins.
The Perry Farmers Market, which takes place on Carroll Street in
downtown Perry every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., has
evolved into a favorite local hot spot throughout the community.
The International City Farmers Market in Warner Robins started
in 2010 and is now the largest farmers market in Middle Georgia,
while the Perry Farmers Market started in 2001. “The International
City Farmers Market started about nine years ago and I ran it for
about three years,” said Daley. “Then the City of Perry asked me to
help manage their market and that’s how I got involved with the
Perry Farmers Market.”
Daley took over the Perry’s Farmers Market in 2013. “Both
markets are year-round. There are not enough growers in middle
Georgia so we’re continually looking for people to grow fruits
and vegetables that we’d like to sell,” said Daley. “Even if you’re a
backyard grower, we want them to contact us.”
Both markets are managed by Land to Hand, a non-profit
organization that supports organic, sustainable business practices
through food policy, farmers markets, events, community gardens,
and commercial kitchens. The organization’s main purpose is to
focus on nutrition and local food supplies that will improve health,
reduce poverty, and grow the economy in Central Georgia. Land to
Hand also aims to connect with food producers and consumers to
Both markets are known to carry a mixture of quality
items like seasonal fruits and vegetables, raised and wellproduced
beef, pork, chicken, and lamb, baked goods, bread,
jams and jellies, naturally made body care products such as
bath bombs, and so much more. Both markets hold special
events throughout the year including cooking dinners,
children’s activities, cooking contests, art exhibits, having
local musicians perform, etc. “We are always looking for help
and more volunteers to do programming and educational
things,” said Daley.
52
52-55 Farmer's Market Story.indd 1 10/25/18 3:43 PM
Daley stated that the markets sometimes have
food trucks where people can stop in for lunch or
get take-home dinners, and they accept people who
are in the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program) program. “Not only do we accept it at each
market but we double the benefits up to $50,” added
Daley.
Asked what she enjoys the most about directing
each market, Daley replied, “The people. The
customers are awesome and love to learn. The
vendors are really cool. They are always learning
from each other.”
Daley points to one quote that’s meaningful to her
regarding the importance of vendors and farmers
being on the same page. “Know your farmer and
know your food,” said Daley. “That’s very important.
We always tell folks, if you wanna learn about your
food, you need to talk with the farmer and grow a
relationship with them to learn how your food is
grown, raised and processed.”
The Centerville Farmers Market has only been
around for a short period of time but it is quickly
becoming a popular venue in the middle Georgia
area.
“We started off in 2016 with Mayor (John Harley)
and Council deciding to dedicate themselves
to a Town Master Plan that was Center Park at
Centerville and Town Center at Centerville,” said
Kate Hogan, Director of Economic Development and
Marketing for the City of Centerville, who serves
as the Manager of the Centerville Farmers Market.
“Through that, we decided that we needed to get
started on some events and the Farmers Market
was one of those. We also did Food Truck Fridays.
The city of Centerville wanted to help sponsor these
events. The first day the Farmers Market opened
was May 13, 2017.”
Hogan said that early on, the market was open on
the second Saturday of the month and only once a
month. At the end of 2017, the City of Centerville
underwent some re-branding and when the market
opened back up in 2018, it started taking place twice
a month, on the first and third Saturdays.
“Centerville did not have a Farmers Market before
and I worked closely with Jodi Daley, who is in charge
of the International City Farmers Market in Warner
Robins and Perry Farmers Market,” said Hogan.
“We had a bunch of interest and I went over to her
market and offered for her vendors to come over to
our market. Some were able to come over.”
At Home in Houston County 53
54
Hogan said the Centerville and Warner Robins Farmers
Markets take place on different days, but the Centerville and
Perry Markets occur on the same day. “We’re such a large
market that it’s easy to have a Northern/Southern market.”
Before 2016, Centerville Mayor and Council did not have
a Director of Economic Development and Hogan stated that
they wanted to reach the city more through that department.
“While this is Economic Development in its simplest form,
just creating a sense of place and a sense of pride for this
community has been one of the first steps in helping ensure
that Center Park at Centerville and Town Center at Centerville
is a successful project.”
made our market so successful.”
For any Farmers Market to blossom and thrive, having
quality vendors play a key role. “We do pride ourselves
in having a very diverse market,” said Hogan. “We’ve got
Greenway Farms (Roberta, Georgia), which also goes to
International City Farmers Market, and has everything from
meat, eggs, and jellies. My staple, the people that have been
with me in the beginning are Jail Creek Farms. They are
fantastic. They have sausages, jellies, fruits, and vegetables.
They have really helped us from the ground up. Gypsy Coffee
Company has been with us since the beginning and she has
coffees and spice blends. Shell Soaps is another one. She
makes her own soaps, organic bug spray, deodorant, and
lotions, and makes it all in-house. These vendors really have
the dedication to see this market grow and flourish. It’s our
cooperation and being receptive of their feedback that has
At Home in Houston County
Hogan says that Centerville does not charge their vendors
to set up in the market but added that “we control the
dynamic a little more.” Said Hogan, “So, if we have a soap
vendor, then we try not to have another soap vendor there.
We try to keep a real good balance.”
One of the complaints they received in 2017 was that the
market seemed like more of an “arts and crafts festival.” “We
try to keep a good balance with having primarily food and
we have a waiting list for our arts and crafts vendors,” said
Hogan. “But truly what makes our market stand out is that
we have meal cards that we give out. It’s basically like Blue
Apron and Hello Fresh. We’ll create a shopping list and give
you a recipe and you will have a shopping list of everything
that’s offered in our market. There’s a grocery shopping list
for the market and a grocery shopping list for the grocery
store. We try to keep as many ingredients posted at our
market as possible and then there are some you have to get
at the grocery store. It has been really exciting to see that
implemented.”
There are five meal cards (vegetarian potato hash, tacos,
Italian sausage kabobs, chili, and mixed green salad) with
ingredients for each particular dish. Hogan says they plan on
having those meal cards on display at the market in October
and will carry over into 2019. Another element that the city
is excited about adding is Goat Yoga, which takes place in
52-55 Farmer's Market Story.indd 3 10/25/18 3:45 PM
Center Park on the first and third Saturdays of each
month, the same Saturdays the Farmers Market is
open. “We’ve had 100 people at each session and it
gives our Farmers Market the opportunity to see a full
rush of people in the morning.”
Hogan says that October 6, 2018 will wrap up the
Farmers Market season for the rest of the year because
construction will take place at Center Park, where a
pavilion will be built specifically for the Farmers Market
next year.
“We’re very hands-on,” said Hogan, discussing
her involvement with the market. “We are out there
seeing how every vendor is doing and getting constant
feedback. We want to make sure the vendors are
comfortable and we want to create the best dynamic
out there.”
Lilly Schoolhouse
Historic
Circa 1912
The upstairs auditorium seats
approximately 150 and has been restored
to an art-deco theater/auditorium of the period.
Go back in time to the
Old Lilly Schoolhouse
Saved from impending demolition, the Lilly Schoolhouse in Lilly,
Georgia has been a labor of love for local attorney, Michelle
Smith. The loving restoration has been a four-year project,
that had a year-long delay last year due to the January 2017 tornadoes
and weather that almost destroyed three years of painstaking, historic
restoration. Circa 1912, the Historic Lilly Schoolhouse was built by Perry
Green Busbee, Sr., the father of Georgia Governor George Busbee. The
school has a 150-seat auditorium/theater, a large banquet room, and two
period classrooms with original chalkboards.
Rain damage from the January 2017 storms was not covered by the
insurance policy as rain was excluded. Disaster assistance with FEMA and
SBA, while promised by both bureaucracies never materialized, since Lilly,
Georgia was 30 miles outside of the disaster declaration. Local delegations
pleaded to have the disaster declaration amended by FEMA, only to be
told that such an amendment could only come from the President. A
letter to President Trump requesting assistance could not unravel the
bureaucracy.
Undeterred, Smith has continued the labor of love, starting over
last January repainting and reworking areas already restored. Historic
restoration is a slow process, as it is not enough to just make an old
building look new. Original colors of surviving paint are matched, as
well as original stain colors from surviving baseboard and trim. Period
lighting, curtains, and appropriate historic era furnishings are just some of
the details that make an old building go back in time.
This is not the first time the Lilly Schoolhouse was almost destroyed
by water damage, as the school was in danger of being lost completely by
catastrophic roof damage due to water and rain damage in the 1980’s. The
upstairs auditorium was completely in ruins.
The downstairs floor has a large banquet
room that leads out to the Lilly
Schoolhouse grounds and two additional period
classrooms with original chalkboards.
The entire front classrooms were almost completely lost due to massive
termite damage that obliviated entire supporting beams. So as not to
destroy the integrity of the original heart pine classroom flooring, Smith
insisted that the termite repair was done by crawling under the school, and
slowly taking up individual heart pine boards to save and relay them after
new supporting beams were constructed underneath. At all times, the goal
has been to save the integrity of the building and to maintain its character
and charm.
The Lilly Schoolhouse is not perfect, because construction in 1912 was
not perfect. Defects and imperfections have been lovingly preserved,
including the original glass in an interior door that was once an exterior
door. The original craftsman built the door by hand and squared out the
opening by sight. The original out of square opening, visible if you look
close remains, to be true to the character and charm of the building.
That door was built with love for the Lilly Schoolhouse some 100 years
ago, and love should not be changed to fit in a square.
The Lilly Schoolhouse will open late summer or early fall 2018, weather
and rain permitting.
In response to a great number of requests from the general public,
we are proud to announce that we will be opening a new section in our
cemetery. This section will be called Traditional II and will be reserved for
upright granite and marble monuments only. Our first Traditional section is
completely sold out so the time has come to start another.
These two sections will be adjacent to each other to allow for continuity
within the cemetery and so families already in Traditional I can expand into
Traditional II and be as close as possible to their relatives.
We expect this section to be in high demand so we urge you to come see
us soon. By reserving your family’s spaces now, you not only have the widest
selection available but you will also benefit from special pre-need prices and
no interest financing.
Soar in to the
Museum of Aviation
By CHRISTINE HAWLEY
HHJ Staff Writer
“There is always something exciting going on at the
museum,” according to Director of Operations, Jenny Maas.
Regardless of whether you are a Houston County resident
or just passing through, visiting the Museum of Aviation in
Warner Robins is a definite must.
Free to the public and open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m., the museum is located next to Robins Air Force Base
and is easily accessible from both I-16 and I-75 (1942
Heritage Blvd. Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, 31098).
Maas explained, “We have over 85 missiles and aircraft on
display in four exhibit hangars so during hot or cold months
or rain, our museum is a wonderful way to escape the
weather while being provided with free entertainment.” She
continued, “Plan to spend a day visiting us because there is a
lot to see! First time visitors are always overwhelmed by the
magnitude of the size of our amazing museum.”
With four exhibit hangars, Maas stated that their “challenge
is deciding what to refresh, update, or replace first so that we
can keep the experience of visiting the Museum fresh even
for those who visit over and over again.” One of their newest
additions is the “Free Kids Zone on the second floor of our
Century of Flight Hangar which includes a coloring station,
a scavenger hunt, a touch screen tour of the International
Space Station, and a building block station.”
In the past year they have unveiled a newly restored
F-100D, opened a new USAF Security Forces Exhibit, and revitalized
their art gallery, with the help of students from Northside High
School. Maas continued, “One of the most interesting things to see
is the restoration process of our B-17, which is taking place daily in
the WWII Hangar and is open to the public to view.”
62
The Museum of Aviation is also “proud to be the home of
the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame.” Located on the second floor
of the Century of Flight Hangar, this exhibit “honors aviation
leaders, living and dead, whose extraordinary achievements
or services have made outstanding and lasting contributions
to aviation, perpetuating the memory of such persons and
recording their contributions and achievements by displaying
suitable memorials.” Each year, two to four new inductees are
chosen through an extensive voting process.
Guided tours are available through the National STEM
Academy located at the museum and are offered Tuesday
through Saturday for groups of 20 or more (ages 5 - adult).
Maas said, “The talented staff at our National STEM Academy
makes these tours interesting for guests of all ages!” They
last approximately 90 minutes and can be booked online
at: museumofaviation.org or by calling the National STEM
Academy at: 478-926-5558.
The museum also features a gift shop, Jet Fuel Java and
Aviation Gifts, on the first floor of the Eagle Building where
one can find anything from unique toys, popular food brands
such as See’s Candies, clothing, various aircraft models, and
more. Maas said, “Our shop is the perfect place to find gifts
and souvenirs related to all branches of the armed forces,
Robins Air Force Base, and the Museum of Aviation.”
Upcoming events at the Museum of Aviation include
their sixth and final year of Nevermore Hills Haunted Trail,
“a favorite of the public,” and on November 3rd, for one day
only, the museum will host a play out of New York City titled
“The Wright Brothers - Those Daring Young Men and Their
Flying Machine.” The National STEM Academy will present
a STEM-based version of the musical on the morning of the
3rd, followed by STEM activities, and then a version geared
toward an adult audience in the evening, as a dinner theater
production. The academy has a full calendar of events year
round that features workshops, summer camps, and teacher
trainings, all of which can be found on their website.
“Plan to spend a day visiting us because
there is a lot to see! First time visitors are
always overwhelmed by the magnitude
of the size of our amazing museum.”
Looking for Short Term
Rehab or Long Term Care?
The Church Home may be just the place for you or your family member!
When selecting a facility for short term rehabilitation or long term care,
there are several key considerations for your family. We think you will agree
– Church Home / LifeSpring is the absolute best facility in this area.
Five Star Quality Measure Rating
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services evaluates every nursing
home across the nation looking at multiple measures, including quality
of care, staffing, health inspections, and adherence to regulations.
Church Home is a Five Star rated facility – the highest ranking – and
has been for over a decade. The highest quality care is in our culture.
Church Home’s stellar reputation is earned. Families may research
nursing homes on federal government’ CMS site https://www.medicare.
gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html. Church Home also continues
to be recognized by US News & World Report and the National Research
Corporation as one of the top 5% of nursing homes in Georgia!
Rehabilitation to Health and Home. The Church Home / LifeSpring has the
highest community discharge rate in the area. That means we successfully
send more back home when rehab is complete. And we have the lowest
re-hospitalization rate – by a large margin – than any facility in our area. If
successful rehab is your goal, Church Home is your facility!
Privacy and Security
We respect our residents’ privacy; that’s why we offer all private rooms
with private showers in our rehab areas. We also provide smaller dining
rooms for our rehab residents separate from our long term care.
State of the Art Facility
Our Excellent therapy staff provides Physical / Occupational / Speech
therapy in our state of the art rehab gym. Church Home is all new
construction or newly renovated since 2012. All rehab rooms are new since
2014 and 2017. It’s a beautiful place that your family will thoroughly enjoy.
Staffing. Church Home is committed to providing the best staff to meet our
residents’ needs. From our nursing and care staff to our Sodexo-led dining
team, Church Home / LifeSpring staff love what they do and love where they
work. It is our honor to serve our residents.
Location
We are conveniently located 1 mile south of Hwy 96 on US Hwy 41 in Houston
County. We are the closest facility to the Houston Lake / Lake Joy area, and
only a few miles from Warner Robins or Perry. When it comes to offering
your family the absolute best rehabilitation facility in the area, a few miles is
still very close.
Church Home Healthcare Serves Middle Georgia
Church Home Rehabilitation and Healthcare offers nursing care and
rehabilitation services for seniors throughout middle Georgia. Whether
the need is long-term, skilled nursing care, or short-term in-patient or
out-patient rehabilitation, Church Home and LifeSpring serves the middle
Georgia community.
Tracing its history to 1939 when the members of Christ Sanctified Holy
Church opened the original Church Home for the Aged, the facility has
undergone numerous expansions and renovations. The primary facility was
completely renovated in 2012. In 2014, the LifeSpring rehabilitation center
opened to provide state-of-the-art services for those needing short-term
support following surgery or a medical event. A 10 bed expansion to
LifeSpring opened in 2017, allowing the facility to expand its care to more
area seniors. All LifeSpring rooms have private suites with private baths.
Did you know it is estimated that one in
five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and the
American Academy of Dermatology estimates that more than 2 million cases of skin
cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year?
The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. With early detection and treatment, skin
cancer is highly curable. Skin cancer is easily diagnosed with a skin biopsy. There are
different treatment options for skin cancer including excisional surgery, cryosurgery
(freezing), electro surgery (burning), radiation, prescription medications, and the
specialized surgical technique of Mohs Micrographic Surgery. The Mohs surgery
procedure has proven to be up to 99 percent effective for basal cell carcinoma and
Squamous cell carcinoma, the most common types of skin cancer.
Mohs surgery is microscopically controlled surgery that involves the complete
evaluation of the surgical margins for skin cancer removal. Mohs surgery is typically
an office based procedure performed safely under local anesthesia, which reduces
recovery time and has fewer side effects than general anesthesia.
During Mohs surgery, the skin cancer is removed layer by layer and the tissue
is processed at an on-site laboratory. The tissue slides are examined by the Mohs
surgeon who performs the pathology services, all while the patient remains in the
office. If more cancer remains, the Mohs surgeon removes more tissue precisely from
only the area with remaining cancer and this additional layer of tissue is processed
and microscopically examined. This process continues until all of the cancerous
tissue is removed.
Mohs surgery allows for the complete removal of
the skin cancer, yet minimizes the removal of healthy tissue leaving
the smallest possibly surgical wound. After Mohs surgery confirms that all of the skin
cancer has been removed, the surgical defect is immediately ready for repair. There
are several options for repaid that include allowing the wound to heal on its own or
surgically repairing the defect.
Frequently, the Mohs surgeon also performs the reconstructive surgery with a
sutured linear repair, skin graft, or skin flap.
GEORGIA DERMATOLOGY & SKIN CANCER CENTER is a general and
surgical dermatology practice comprised of twenty offices throughout Georgia with
The Memory Care Program at Summerhill Senior Community is
structured to fulfill all aspects of the social well-being of each resident’s
needs. The program is structured for resident centered care on all
levels from dining, activities, and ADL care. Excitingly, Summerhill
Senior Community qualified to be a part of the “Music Integration
Program for Seniors” through the Georgia Health Care Association.
This Music Integration Program will incorporate music therapy into
our residents’ daily care and activities to help with the enjoyment
of special memories made around music from the residents’ past.
Studies have proven that music helps to curb some behaviors related
to Dementia or Alzheimer’s, and we have found that the music calms
the resident while providing care. One example of how we incorporate
music into the daily care of our residents is by installing Wi-Fi enabled
speakers into the shower room to provide appropriate music tailored
to the residents’ needs while undressing, showering, and redressing
the resident to relax and clam them. Also incorporated in the program
will be daily music activities and weekly volunteers to engage the
residents and help with their social well-being.
In addition, Summerhill has incorporated a volunteer program geared
towards the needs of resident groups and structured to engage and
socialize each resident. Volunteers love watching our residents thrive
through socialization, music, and guided activities that nurture
happy memories from his or her past. Volunteers from the age of 15
At Home in Houston County
and above will complete
a volunteer application
and complete the required
paperwork and background
check before approval. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with
our Memory Care Program may see the Memory Care Coordinator,
Deidra Hambrick, for an application and more information. Each
day consists of structured activities ranging from art painting classes,
puzzles, singing, birthday parties, one-on-one reading, and special
events. Each volunteer will be assisted by a Summerhill staff member
at all times. The goal of Summerhill’s premier Memory Care Program
is to provide the best possible care while nurturing each resident’s
social well-being in a safe and friendly environment.
Summerhill Senior Community is dedicated to providing the highest
quality of care to the senior community of Middle Georgia. For more
VIBES IN HOUSTON COUNTY
By TARA POOLE
HHJ Contributor
Interested in watching a live theatrical performance
or musical? Have a budding performer in your family?
Want to hone your artistic skills and help build or
design stage sets? Then Houston County is the place
to be! Both Perry and Warner Robins boast thriving
amateur community theaters featuring quality,
family-oriented entertainment from one act plays
and dramas to comedies and musicals.
Perry Players Community Theater
“Perry Players started as an idea and a group of
about 15 people and has grown into a network of
people by the hundreds over the years, all dedicated to
bringing quality theater to the area,” explains Hunter
Hufnagel, artistic director for the Perry Players.
The Perry Players Community Theater was
founded in the early 1980s as a repertory company
for and by amateur theater enthusiasts in the Perry
area. Their goal was to offer high-quality, familyoriented
entertainment and cultural activities to
people throughout the Middle Georgia area, as well
as provide an environment where fledgling and
seasoned performers could practice and grow in their
craft. In the beginning, the group produced “anything
and everything”—sketches, skits, one act plays, full
length dramas and comedies—utilizing whatever
local venues they could find to showcase their acting
and design talents.
“The founding group didn’t have a dedicated place
to put on shows, rehearsals, and so forth so they
used places like Sally Stanley’s Dance Studio, the
auditorium at Perry High School, and even Fort Valley
State University for plays. Members would build the
stage sets in their garages…wherever was available,”
says Hufnagel.
Over time, the company outgrew its humble
beginnings and, in 1992 with the support of dedicated
patrons, benefactors and local businesses, set up
permanent shop at its current location 909 Main
Street in Downtown Perry. Once home to a car
dealership and a local Teen Night Club, the downtown
building was renovated into a 170-seat community
theater featuring six to seven theatrical shows and
musicals per year. Past show seasons have included
productions of the Wizard of Oz, the Little Mermaid,
Driving Miss Daisy, Annie, and You’re a Good Man
Charlie Brown—just to name a few.
“We traditionally sell on average 100 season
passes per year. This [2018-2019] season we’ve sold
300 season passes—the most ever. We continue to
have more volunteers, more people auditioning, and
larger audiences each season,” says Hufnagel. “Our
goal is to continue to provide shows year-round that
are well rounded and grow to provide shows that
the community wants to see. We want to create
something that is a normal part of family life here in
Middle Georgia.”
The Perry Players’ 2018-2019 show season has
included Sundown at Timberlane Drive, Ragtime The
Musical, and Anything Goes. Upcoming shows for
the remainder of the season will include A Christmas
Carol, The Golden Girls Musical, and Hello Dolly The
Musical. Show times, audition schedules, ticket prices
and season pass information can be found at www.
Players can contact the theater by calling (478) 987-
Warner Robins Little Theater
Formed in June 1962 by a group of 30 local
individuals, the Warner Robins Little Theater has
continuously produced live theater for patrons
throughout Middle Georgia for more than 50 years.
The company’s first official playhouse—appropriately
called “The Barn”—was in an old milking barn the
group converted into a small theater. My Three
Angels was the first official production for the Warner
Robins Little Theater and was performed in 1963.
Unfortunately, the newly formed theater group was
displaced when the farm was sold for development of
Tanglewood Estates Subdivision.
“We held performances at area schools and
churches, and we performed several years at the
Warner Civic Center. However, we determined we
needed a space that was more suitable for our needs,”
explains Richard Hamilton, president of the Warner
Robins Little Theater.
In June 1980, the founding group purchased the
property at 502 South Pleasant Hill Road in Warner
Robins and over the next few years transformed the
former barbeque restaurant into a 98-seat theater.
Move Over Mrs. Markham was the first production
performed in the new playhouse in 1982. Recent
renovations have involved repaving and expanding the
parking lot to allow for easier access to the theater’s
entrance for patrons.
“Our season begins in July and we currently produce
five shows each year,” adds Hamilton. “With the
number of community theaters in the area, we have
been very fortunate over the years with donations
and support from our community.”
Past show seasons for the Warner Robins Little
Theater have included productions of Peter and the
Starcatcher, Steel Magnolias, Who Killed Elvis?, and
On Golden Pond. Upcoming productions for the 2018-
2019 season include Suddenly Last Summer (October
and November), The Sisters Rosensweig (February
and March), Mystery, Mayhem and Murder (April and
May).
Building
Starts Here
Warner Robins Building Supply Company has been
serving the Middle Georgia and Robins Region area
with quality building materials and hardware for
over 70 years through their Warner Robins and Perry
locations.
Warner Robins Building Supply may have started
in 1947 as a supplier of building materials to the local
professional contractor community, but it has grown to
be a building supply company that has eight locations
with retail stores and lumberyards that serve central
and north Georgia, western North Carolina and the
South Carolina Foothills region. The north Georgia,
North Carolina and South Carolina locations are known
as either Mountain Building Supply or Henson Building
Materials. So no matter what market they are in,
“Building” is in their name.
Some of the services that set them apart from
other building supply companies are door and window
fabrication and customization shops, commercial door
fabrication shop, garage door shop and an installation
department that can either install, or advise you on
the best way to install any product they sell. Their
seasoned sales staff and fleet of delivery vehicles can
make your building experience more convenient and
enjoyable by bringing their years of knowledge and
materials to your jobsite or home. That’s why they say,
“Building Starts Here”.
In addition to supplying pro-builders and contractors,
Warner Robins Building Supply also meets the
needs of homeowners as well with their Homeworks
Design & Remodeling Center that has a kitchen, bath
and flooring showroom and design center. Remodeling
services by their professional staff are also available at
the Warner Robins location along with installation and
repair of garage doors and openers. Warner Robins
Building Supply has the largest millworks showroom
in Middle Georgia at their Watson Boulevard location
with a full-line of products that include windows, doors
and trim molding on display. They also have a millworks
showroom in their Perry location at 612 Ball Street.
Lastly, their Commercial Division serves commercial
building contractors with hollow metal and fire-rated
doors along with bathroom partitions and accessories.
“Our customers are assisted by both in-store and
outside sales staff that have decades of knowledge
and practical experience, and are always anxious to
serve you. We offer both stock and custom order
items to meet any need you may have in your building
or remodeling projects,” said Jim Taylor, Business
Development and Marketing Manager. “No job is too
big or too small for the Warner Robins Building Supply
Installed Sales department.” “We fully support our
loyal contractor customers, but can also offer installed
services for any of the products we sell.
Emporium
Where the locals shop
Clothing • Gifts • Home Decor
My goal with The Emporium was to provide a fun retail
environment that caters to everyone of all ages as well as providing
one general 4,500 square foot storefront for many locals to sell
their products. Since opening in November 2012, we’ve continually
provided at least 30 local families with a supplemental income.
(That’s like cramming 30+ awesome small businesses under one
roof... Of course you’re going to have a good outcome!) They provide
the product, we market and sell it. We are proud to say that some of
them have grown enough with us, they have since branched off and
opened their own local storefronts.
Our vision for the future hasn’t changed since we started, just
improved with time! I’ve said a lot of prayers and had a lot of faith
since the very start of this process. We’ve truly been blessed in the
6 years of being here. We love the relationships we have built with
our customers and hope make many new ones as we go.
We are currently full with no spaces available to rent. If you are
unMark was originally started in 1949
by R. D. Buchan as The Pulaski Banking
Company in Hawkinsville, GA. In 1976,
The Pulaski Banking Company changed its name to
SunMark Bancshares, Inc. Sunmark continued to
flourish and in 1997 we branched out into Warner
Robins and opened our Houston Lake office. Then in
2001 Bonaire and Fort Valley branches were opened.
In 2016, we opened our 5th location in Perry. This
year in 2018, we just opened our 6th location in
Byron. SunMark has continued to shine through the
economy’s ups and downs over the years, we remain
well-capitalized and well-maintained, enabling us
to help our customers and communities where
we live, work and play. Middle Georgia remains
one of the fastest growing areas in Georgia and
we are committed to supporting its growth. Our
primary purpose in all of our markets is to create
an atmosphere that allows every customer to be
successful.
THE MUSEUM OF AVIATION is one of the
largest aviation museums in the United States and a
major U.S. Air Force Heritage, Exhibit and Education
Center in the Southeast. It is a model base-community
partnership which serves as the showcase of Robins Air Force Base, the largest industrial complex
in the state of Georgia. The Museum is the second largest museum in the U.S. Air Force and one
of only ten aviation museums in the United States to be accredited by the American Alliance of
Museums. Admission to the Museum is free and it is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily 361 days a year. It is
located 10 miles east of I-75 exit 144 at the end of Russell Parkway in Warner Robins, Georgia.
The Museum has a large collection of approximately 85 historic U.S. Air Force aircraft,
missiles and cockpits dating from a replica of a 1986 glider to modern aircraft in today’s U.S. Air
Force inventory. Just a few notable aircraft include the actual SR-71 that set the World Absolute
Speed Record of 2,193 mph, B-25, B-29, B-52 and B-1B bombers as well as an UH-1F “Huey” climb
in.
The Museum Foundation operates interactive world-class education programs through its
National STEM Academy which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)
and History. Opportunities for learners ages 4 through adult are conducted both on school sites
and at the Museum of Aviation. An average of 52,000 students and teachers take part in National
STEM Academy education programs each year. The Museum is also the only NASA Educator
Resource Center in the state of Georgia, educating teachers on NASA’s programs so that they can
take them back to their classrooms.
Last year was a monumental year for the Museum of Aviation, with more than 558,000
visitors. The Museum has six event spaces for rental for groups from 20 to 1,000 where it hosted
more than 365 events last year from birthday celebrations and retirements to reunions and
receptions. In January, the Museum partnered with the Paralyzed Veterans of America to host its
first hand-cycle race as part of the 22nd Annual Marathon/Half-Marathon and 5K race. During the
summer, the National STEM Academy held 24 weekly summer camps for children in Pre-K to 12th
grade. The Museum opened a Kids Zone in the Century of Flight this year and also premiered their
new mascot, Barry the B-17.
On October 4th, the Museum was proud to open a new Virtual Reality Simulator to the
public, which is located in the main Rotunda at the Museum. The
simulator, which was created by a company called Pulseworks out
of Atlanta, is a 365 degree full motion simulator. Riders have the
option to choose from a visit to the International Space Station
or an underwater adventure. The simulator will be open to the
public during all operating hours of the Museum. For more
information, see our ad on the back cover of this magazine.
