THE FIRST <strong>100</strong> YEARS<br />

<strong>The</strong> job is inherently dangerous. Spc. Michael Carter,<br />

a 55th Signal Company (Combat Camera) soldier, was<br />

awarded the Silver Star for his actions during a battle in<br />

the Shok Valley of Nuristan Province, Afghanistan on<br />

April 6, 2008. Carter was one of ten soldiers awarded the<br />

Silver Star as a result of the hour-long mountainside battle.<br />

Carter’s actions included repeatedly putting himself in<br />

danger while repulsing the enemy, providing first aid and<br />

calling for close air support.<br />
