PALM SPRINGS PRIDE NOV 1-4 P.26
THIS WEEK
We chose the next Mr. Palm Springs
Leather. (Photo by Adrian) Richard
Passmore, also Mr. Tool Shed received
the PSLOD's highest honor. But it's also
important to congratulate the many,
many community members that helped
established this event and continue its grand
tradition. The leather community has alway
been the loving but stern big brother of our
queer lives. They protest us when we need it
and are there for the long run. We have met
Mr. Passmore and we approve. He seems
to embody the fine traditions of the leather
and reminds us to show our better Angels.
He is passionate about our community and
interested in bringing more folks discover
Best known for her iconic roles in
films and television series spanning
over generations, EG Daily
is a Los Angeles native and started
her career at an early age with
roles on shows including “Laverne
and Shirley,” “Chips,” and “Fame.”
In the ‘80s, she had three Top
10 hits, including “Say It, Say It”
by Benitez, which went #1 on the
Billboard dance charts. EG also
stunned judges on NBC’s “The
Voice” once they realized that she
had starred in the ‘80’s cult classic
movie PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE
as Dottie, had voiced Tommy
Pickles on Nickelodeon’s hit cartoon
“Rugrats” and had gueststarred
on NBC’s “Friends” as Leslie,
a “song-song” for a while, and I
wasn’t even actually trying. I always
write for different projects, once
So Pretty was finished, I felt very
strongly about it and thought I
want this to be a me song. I wanted to
tackle it since the message was so important,
so the next you know, I put together the
team and hired the people to make the video.
When the video was done, it became very
clear to me that the message doesn’t just
affect women, but also children, younger
boys, and men— it affects everyone. True
beauty is an inside job.
You recently said, “We can be
our harshest critics and I want
this song to be an anthem for
everyone to say to themselves ‘I
am more than enough.” Do you
have any personal experiences to
share?
Yeah, at my age, I’m still at a
point where I want to look beauti-
Tell me about your new song, “So
Pretty.”
So what happened
The liberals guide to voting!
Straight white Democrats
also might find themselves
in the minority class. So now we know the
fear and loathing of those of us that grew
up under a Vietnam war where 58,000
Americans died killing 2 million others. No
one needs to tell us how important it is.
Trump supporters are like a drunk driver
in your lane. They will not change their
minds. They are certain they are in the
correct lane. Our only hope is to out vote
them. Then we can begin to help them
see both sides of the issue. As a gay man I
Vote Democrat, because I have read both
platforms and the Democratic platform
supports more representation of the peoples
of this land. Now it is true we have a rich
and colorful history of oppression, cruelty
and indifference. Democrats are
also to blame for that and
is matched by the evildoers
all over the word. We exist. We struggle,
we all help each other up in a disaster. We
have joyful births and sad passing of those
we love. That's what it's all about, because
we exist, it proves that love always wins in
SPECTACULAR
LAKE COMO, ITALY
By Vic Gerami
I went to Lake Como, Italy in June,
imagining it as a small and sleepy
luxury resort town. I was pleasantly
surprised to learn that Como is
everything but small and offers the
best of Italy’s beauty, culture, history
and much more.
SPECTACULAR
north of Milan, close to the Swiss
border. At fifty-six square miles, the
lake is shaped like an inverted letter
“Y”, surrounded by dozens of ancient
villages along its shores. Each quaint
village has its own rich history,
distinct characteristics and offers
unique sites to visit.
Since Roman times, Lake Como has
been a popular retreat for nobility,
aristocrats and wealthy people, and
a very popular tourist attraction with
many artistic and cultural gems. But
despite its popularity with celebrities
and elite travelers, Como is affordable
for all visitors despite their budget.
Mid-range and budget hotels and
other lodging options make Como
accessible to everyone.
Como appeals to all types of travelers,
history and architecture buffs, who
want to see Roman, middle-ages and
renaissance buildings, majestic gothic
cathedrals and churches, hike in the
mountains surrounding the lake, visit
world-class museums and foodies who
want to try local cuisines and the best
Michelin 3-Star restaurants in the
world. Although not one of the biggest
wine regions in Italy, there are several
wineries around Como and local wines
are served at most restaurants there.
The region is perfect for LGBT
travelers as your sexual orientation
is a non-issue there. I asked a local
about the community’s attitude toward
queers and his response was, “Why
does it matter? Everyone is the same.”
My personal experience in Como was
that it is a welcoming city to everyone
as I had discussions with several
local residents about the community’s
acceptance of its LGBT residents and
tourists. The locals are some of the
friendliest, warmest and hospitable
people I have ever encountered,
welcoming LGBT travelers with open
arms.
I had my first dinner at the exquisite
Raimondi restaurant at Hotel Villa
Flori. The lakeside restaurant’s uberfriendly
master-chef was the icing on
The lake is located in northern Italy’s the cake. Although the restaurant
came out to greet me when he found
out that I was vegetarian and made me
a special meal. A welcome change in
Italy is that loud music is not blasted at
restaurants and coffee shops, so you are
able to have a conversation and enjoy
the ambience without competing with
the music. www.hotelvillaflori.com
Even a month in Como is not enough to
see its top attractions, so I had a tight
schedule. You must take a boat ride
on the lake to experience its grandness
and beauty. Budget travelers can take
a half-day ferry from the town center.
Ferries stop at various villages so you
can get a bite, visit its attractions, shop
or simply sit at a café and enjoy the
view. It does not take much money to
enjoy the lakeside. You can also rent a
private boat with a tour-guide, who will
take you to villages of your choice and
tell you their history, significance and
major landmarks. I took a private boatride
with a guide, who took me to see
one of the lake’s most popular villages,
Bellagio, with lots of local shops,
restaurants and cafes. We also visited
Villa La Gaeta in San Siro where James
Bond: Casino Royale was filmed, as well
as Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the
Clones. I recommend TASELL Boat Tour
Company www.tasell.com.
SPECTACULAR
Roman origins. It is a great place to
stay if you are visiting, want to be in
the center of town and have easy access
to everything. The ideal hotel to stay
at if you want to be in the town-center
is Vista Hotel. It is a small but elegant
boutique hotel with breathtaking views
of the lake and stunningly beautiful
rooms. Its bathrooms are works of art,
lavishly designed with Italian marble
and the finest materials. Vista has an
“infinity” rooftop restaurant, bar and
café that would take your breath away.
Being on the property makes you feel
that you are staying in a luxurious
private villa. www.vistalagodicomo.com
If you want to stay at the grand-dame
of Lake Como, then 5-Star Villa D’Este
in Cernobbio is your resort. It is a
magnificent hotel and twenty-five acre
park surrounding it, commissioned by
Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, in 1550 the
governor of Tivoli. Villa D’Este is the
most luxurious and exquisite hotel in
Como with a spectacular park with rare
flowers with a jaw-dropping Mosaic
House.
I
If able, it’s worth every penny to book
a seaplane and see the region from
the sky while the pilot points out
major landmarks and historical sites. I had my last dinner there and my meal
recommend Sea-Plane Company AERO was especially prepared by Executive
Como has not been spoiled by major
international corporate brands.
You won’t see a Starbucks there,
Uber is illegal and most resorts are
privately owned and family operated.
Exceptionally, Hilton has managed to
build a very tastefully beautiful and
under-stated but luxurious hotel a year
ago, which blends very well with the
city’s aesthetic. The building used to be
a silk factory but transformed to a sleek
and modern property with an infinity
rooftop pool, sky bar and comprehensive
health, fitness and spa facilities. The
continental breakfast is a jaw-dropping
feast and the hotel is very conveniently
located close to the town-center. www.
lakecomo.hilton.com
If sleek and sexy is what you are
looking for, then you il sereno is your
hotel. The all-suite hotel is a minimalist
masterpiece, built on centuries-old
arches, with a warm and welcoming
flair. The architect used stone, wood
and copper as the main elements and
seamlessly weaved the building into
Como’s architectural aesthetic.
il sereno has a panoramic view from
every inch of the property, including
its 60-foot freshwater infinity pool
suspended over the lake and a luscious
sundeck that screams pool-party.
The hotel is modern and chic but still
authentically Italian. You only need
a basic driver’s license to drive the
boat. www.serenohotels.com/property/
il-sereno
SPECTACULAR
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo, familyowned
since 1910, is absolutely
incredible. The property is stunningly
beautiful and had a warm welcoming
feel the minute I stepped out of the boat
and onto its magnificent deck. Adjacent
to the deck is a floating pool; one of the
hotel’s three pools, it is suspended over
the lake and moves a bit as you swim in
it. A very large bar is the centerpiece of
the veranda, serving the guests as they
sunbathe, swim and take a boat ride.
Many of the rooms feature breathtaking
views of Lake Como, Bellagio, and the
surrounding Alps. The rooftop suites are
known to attract a-list stars and include
butler service, terraces, and outdoor hot
tubs. Take a short stroll to the famed
gardens of Villa Carlotta, hit the wine
cellar for intimate tastings or enjoy
wood-fired pizzas in the hotel’s lush
gardens.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a member
of Preferred Hotel & Resorts, which
represents the finest and most diverse
global portfolio of independent hotels.
The hotel is part of “Preferred Pride”
which donates a percentage of its
bookings to an LGBT Association in
the USA. Although the Lake Como
I look at the people I used to look up to and grateful for all of you for making me who I am
out, I will always help out others in need and
not speak bad of them or treat them in a way
These type of things happen in every
doing your part and be a inspiration to others
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
WOW! I took last week off due to some surgery. Senator Silver could do, I will be voting for Joy
What I thought should be relatively simple took 3 STATE ASSEMBLY, DISTRICT 56 –
hours on the table and 1 in recovery. Now I feel like a
EDUARDO GARCIA There is no question
61-year-old man who got ran over by a truck.
that Eduardo is one of the top 10 legislators in
I’m skipping national politics again this week and will the Assembly. He works constantly on issues that
focus on the upcoming state and federal races. Vote affect us, most notably on the environment but
my mail ballots are out now so now is the time give on so many others. He is easily accessible, willing
you my thoughts and suggestions. I am not listing to meet constituents in Sacramento or here in
all the candidates, just those I am supporting. I have the valley. He has embraced his district that runs
respect for anyone who stands up and says I am ready through the Coachella, Palo Verde and Imperial
to serve. Thank you to all.
Valleys. We should all be thankful to have him as
Part 2 from last wee.
our Assemblyman. I vote yes on returning Garcia to
STATE SENATE –
Sacramento.
JEFF STONE In full disclosure I worked for STATE ASSEMBLY, DISTRICT 42 -
the Senator for one year at the beginning of his first
CHAD MAYES One of the nicest guys in
term in Sacramento. I was the field rep to the LGBT, Sacramento. A conservative but one who is willing
labor and Democratic constituents and during that to work across lines to get things done – it is that
time I worked hard to educate Jeff on our differences philosophy that cost him the Minority Leader’s
of opinion on policy matters. I have known
position. I have known Chad from his time as
him since he was a councilman, Mayor, County councilman and Mayor of Yucca Valley, to his work
Supervisor and now Senator. He has always been a with San Bernardino County Supervisor Rutherford
conservative but in his roles at the City of Temecula and now in Sacramento. He is much more to my
and with the County, he was always able to put aside right on issues, but he has integrity, opening to learn
the partisan BS and help forge a compromise that new things (I recall a lunch I put together with him
works. That Jeff left us in Riverside as I am afraid and the late George Zander, Andy Liinsky and a
it hasn’t shown up in Sacramento. He has become local transgendered advocate. He took the lunch,
one of the more partisan voices in the Senate. It is a spoke to us for over two hours and I believe walked
shame as I wish everyone could see my friend Jeff as I not convinced but had his mind opened some.
did. I still believe he is one of the smarter legislators Ultimately, he has the experience, passion and love of
but he needs to bring back his bipartisanship and lose his district. He deserves reelection.
the baggage of gets to be more “right”.
DENI ANTOINETTE MAZINGO Chad
JOY SILVER Joy has been a whirlwind of activity Mayes’ opponent is a bright articulate woman who
since she announced her candidacy for the Senate. surprised everyone by coming in first in the primary,
She has lined up significant support from people I but with Republicans unifying around Mayes and the
respect like Barbara Boxer and Senate President Pro Democrats focused on Joy Silver, Deni’s job was made
Tem, Toni Atkins (D-San Diego). She generated very difficult, maybe impossible. She has a future in
enough cash to put the race on the radar. However, the Party and politics. She held herself with dignity
she suffers from a continual staff turnover, a leaning throughout the campaign and applaud her. Her time
towards micromanaging the campaign, has not will come.
developed fully options for the problems the district ASSOCIATE JUSTICE, CA SUPREME
has, nor left the east side of the valley enough and COURT – I won’t go into detail about these two
venture out to the western end – Temecula, Idyllwild, recommendations. They are incumbents on the
etc. I do believe she can learn and her choices for CA Supreme Court and are up on a retention vote.
chief of staff and Legislative Director will be critical. Governor Brown appointed both to the bench and
The leadership in Sacramento will also be helpful in have judged aporically and fairly. I vote to retain
helping find her way. Due to Jeff Stone’s bombastic these fine jurists
GAY PRIDE PALM SPRINGS - HISTORY
AND SYMBOLS
The LGBTQ community has been
persecuted and ostracized throughout
history. The struggle for recognition to be
accepted by the broader society as legitimate
in their various sexuality has been a
continuous political conflict . Reminders
of recent conflicts throughout the past
several decades include the Stonewall Riots
in 1969, New York City. This spectacle of
discrimination and police brutality brought
major attention to the plight of the gay
community.and the need for understanding
of our rights as individuals. In the years
following the struggle continued, including
the Anita Bryant campaign to repeal gay
rights, the "don't ask, don't tell" fiasco with
the U.S. military, the violence and murder of
Mathew Sheppard, the Orlando night club
terrorist attack, etc...etc.
AdamsArtExpose’
Why is PRIDE important? Obviously the
need for recognition of LGBTQ people as
members, in equality, within the society
has not been achieved. The most recent
indication is the Trump administration
attempting to removed transgender from
the U.N. Human Rights, and to prevent
transgender people from participating in
the U.S. military. PRIDE brings about the
possibility to create a sense of belonging
and expression for people who need that
recognition.
It may not be necessary for all LGBTQ
people but for those who are newly
emerging and dealing with the mental and
emotional stages of coming out PRIDE
provides them the opportunity to march,
to celebrate and to find the acceptance of
others and the society.
Included in this article is a compilation of
symbols that have been associated with the
history of the LBGTQ recognition.
Throughout the conflicts and challenges
of the decades since 1969, Palm Springs
has been involved in recognizing PRIDE
beginning with the first Pride parade in
1986, to the current Palm Springs Pride
celebration which last year attracted over
125,000 people from Southern California
and around the world.
OFF MY CHEST Review
have enough understanding to know what
they don't know. Or at least that is what it
was screaming to me. Here Levik lays out
some guidelines to help you understand
if the writer has authority to defend his
opinion.
get (something) off (one's) chest
To reveal or discuss something that has
caused one emotional discomfort and
that one has repressed, kept hidden, or
neglected to discuss earlier. I'm sorry but
I just have to get something off my chest.
How could you treat me like...
Often writers others and have little regard
for other people’s feelings. Still behind this
mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile selfesteem,
vulnerable to the slightest criticism.
We struggle to discuss complex ideas and
thoughts. One interesting example starts
on page 119 Richard provides a basis for
determining how we scn select our experts.
In religion for example, often people who
are considered experts really don't even
Levik has opinions in response to
articles, stories, or other issues affecting
Jews. Levik's criticism also touches on
Christianity and Muslim vs, Islam and the
required critical thinking skills. He also
exposed some bullies, what I call "wrong
headed thinking". Next he debated Ze'ev
Maghen, the Chair of The Department
of Middle Eastern History at Bar-Ilan
University in Israel and a research associate
at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic
Studies on the concept of hell differentiated
only to contrast Judaism from Christianity.
If you agree that people are inherently
neither negative or positive, but pushing
for people to appear positive all the time
can do as much damage as indifference.
But the underlining theme in the book is
to demonstrate a way to present counter
arguments so that even the casual observer
won't get lost in the argument.
#1 Laced Back Vest – Black
Leather
$225.00 offrampleathers.com
Paul's hand made, signature vest.
Paul first conceived of this design in
1987, while working as an apprentice,
in the days when leather was all black
and chrome; he wanted a unique,
new style with accents of color. After
a couple of earlier prototypes, our
first modern laced-back vest was
built in 1996. You may find other
vests which resemble ours, but they
will be lesser-quality imitations of
this vest.
else. There were times when I’ve had
make-up artists, hairstylists, wardrobe
people, stylists—but if you’re
not joyful in the inside, it doesn’t
matter what you look like on the
outside you won’t feel your beauty.
I know from my personal experience
that I have to ground myself
and that I have to have self-love
and self-compassion. I think people
are most beautiful when they’re not
trying to be beautiful.
What made you decide to include
your two daughters in the video
for “So Pretty”?
Well, because we all struggle with
the issue of beauty and obsess
about it. Especially with filtered
selfies becoming the norm, thats a
lot of pressure. In our household,
we are all trying to encourage each
other and to nurture each other
from the inside out. Like I said, I
like to do things with my tribe: I run
with a pack, and my pack includes
my daughters and a handful of my
friends. And, of course, I wanted my
daughters in it because they represent
the millennials.
You know, it so varies—I could be
at a market and the check-out girl
would say, “You are EG Daily, I love
your voice, I love your music,” and
then in the same check-out line,
the person next to me in line will be
like, “OMG you’re Tommy Pickles.” I
gotta tell you–it’s so vast and it
changes from person to person.
Tell me about your young fans,
especially LGBT.
The gay community has been
incredible. For decades, I’ve performed
at Pride festivals and LGBT
events all across the country. They
are my tribe.
You Kickstarter campaign is an
opportunity for everyone to help
and join this movement. Tell me
a little about that.
First of all, there are some great
perks we offer for pledging this
Kickstarter- like joining us for an
intimate dinner and my team…
or joining us at a special concert
with a private Q & A for the backers
only! Funds raised with this
Kickstarter will also go towards creating
and growing this movement,
and to the proper marketing and
promotion channels to get the song
and its message out there globally.
Also a portion will go toward a
cause that mirrors our movement.
Although you are an actress and
a Pop Star with a prolific music,
film and TV career, you have also
been the voice of a few iconic animated
characters. Do more people
associate you as a singer/actress/
recording artist or the voice You project donates to several
and Babe in Pig in the City?

We are actually working on it right
now, we are actually going to bring
people in and ask them what their
favorite ones are, there are so
many, we are asking around, especially
organizations that encourage
self-love.
What other projects do you have
coming up?
I have a brand new animated
series that I’m very excited about
called, “Maddie and Friends”. We
are celebrating “Rugrats” new
re-boot of 26 new episodes as
well as celebrating the 20th anniversary
of “The Powerpuff Girls”.
The Blu-ray release for “Valley
Girl” 30 th anniversary. November 2nd
“So Pretty” drops!
Which living person do you most
admire?
I most admire those who
don’t bow down or people-please,
but rather stay true to themselves.
I love Oprah Winfrey, Gigi
Gorgeous, Lady Gaga, Meryl
Streep, Barack Obama to name
few. I have a lot of friends who are
transgender and I admire anyone
who stays true to themselves.
Tell me a secret-a good one!
I like shiny balloons and cozy faux
fur blankets.
The song, “So Pretty” can be
pre-ordered on iTunes now.
The video launches on Friday,
November 2 nd and you can join
EG’s movement and contribute to
her Kickstarter campaign here:
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Continued from page 37
LEONDRA KRUGER
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS -
TONY THURMOND Tony is a strong
proponent for public schools, believing that a free
public education only strengthens California. He will
continue a fine history of strong Superintendents who
work to educate and protect our children. I am vote for
Tony
MARSHALL TUCK Marshall is a smart
wealthy man who believes 100% in charter schools.
While this may help some, they have proven to be a
disaster to more. The rich get better schools while those
poorer get less. This is exactly the cycle that must be
broken and Marshall is not up to the job.
COUNTY SHERIFF –
STAN SNIFF/ CHAD BIANCO By far
the most contentious race in the county, pitting the
incumbent Sheriff against one of his underlings. Sheriff
Sniff has worked his entire career for this position and is
finishing his second term. He has done much to bring
financial order to the department and to work with
the Board of Supervisors. He has appointed a strong
body of diverse officials to his leadership team; women,
LGBT, Hispanic, Asian and African American. This
alone will be his legacy when he does leave office. He
has developed new policies on handling trans people
should they get in the law enforcement arena for
whatever reason. It’s been an honor working with him
the last eight years and hope to do so for another four.
Chad on the other hand, has no history of support
for minorities, in fact he was called to speak at a
recent Palm Springs City Council meeting to answer
accusations that he is homophobic that were leveled
at him by a gay deputy. We have no need to go back.
Law enforcement throughout the state and nation is
changing and Stan Sniff will help us in our transition. I
do not believe Chad Bianco can do that.
DESERT HEALTH CARE DISTRICT, DISTRICT 4
SHELLEY KAPLAN No doubt Shelley Kaplan
has been the smartest councilman I have been able
to serve with and it will be a HUGE loss to the city
to have him go to the District, I am excited that he is
in the race for what might be possible for Cathedral
City having him on the board. We have many health
needs, physical and mental) here in the valley and he
will be able to get resources to us for badly needed
programs. As a higher education professional on the
building and development side he will be strong voice
in the renegotiation with Tenant Healthcare and their
operation of Desert Hospital and JFK Memorial in
Indio. Shelley is a real public servant and back his
election 1000%
EVETT PEREZGIL Evett has been a
strong neighborhood activist in the Dream Homes
Neighborhood and currently serves on the city’s Sister
City Task Force. She wants to help her neighbors and
her city and I applaud her. I just do not believe she is
ready for such a critical valley position as Health Care
District Board member.
