The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, Welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors for this Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round match are Wingate & Finchley.
Welcome to their players, officials and supporters. A welcome also to the match officials.
We played Wingate & Finchley last season in the league cup. It looked like Sittingbourne were
going to progress into the Quarter finals of the competition when Miles Cornwell scored an 84 th
minute penalty to put the Brickies 2-1 up, however, Wingate & Finchley had other ideas and progressed
when late goals from Beckles-Richards and Obafemi sealed the tie for the home side.
Brickies who played in that game, still with us this season are Bola Dawodu, Chris Webber and
Tom Loynes. Lex Allan was a substitute. For Wingate & Finchley, Ola Williams, Sean Cronin,
Rob Lainey, Marc Charles-Smith and Reece Beckles-Richards, still feature this season.
Our visitors, are fourteenth in the Bostik League Premier Division, and have recently appointed
joint managers, Nicky Shorey and Glen Little. The following from the Bostik League web site:
“First up is former Reading FC and England full back Nicky Shorey. As well as his time with the
Royals- 284 appearances over two spells- he also turned out in the Premier League for West
Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Aston Villa, and most recently was part of the coaching staff at
Stevenage Borough. His two England caps came against Germany and Brazil, and if you're only
going to play twice for the national team surely those are the opponents you would pick! Shorey's
managerial partner is Glen Little. Bostik League supporters will be familiar with Glen after his
time at Grays Athletic, but he'll be better known for his skills as a flying winger at Burnley, Portsmouth,
and-of course- Reading. Although he played for only a short time at Pompey, he still plays
a significant part in Fratton Park folklore, as part of the side that drew 2-2 with AC Milan in the
UEFA Cup. Milan's team included Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Inzaghi, and Shevchenko.
Pirlo didn't get off the bench! “
Last Saturday we played Phoenix Sports. It was a welcome back to our ex manager, Nick Davies
(now assistant at Phoenix) and ex player Conrad Lee. Phoenix, in second place before the game
started, justified their high position and looked a good side. However, we battled well and kept
going right to the end of the 90 minutes (Like Wingate & Finchley did against us last season) and
snatched a last-minute goal scored by Lex Allan who was tremendous throughout the game.
Before that, of course, was our local derby against Faversham Town in the previous round of the
Buildbase FA Trophy. We generally bossed the game and came away with a deserved 2-0 victory
and banked £3,000. After the game, long serving Faversham Town manager, Ray Turner, resigned.
He is going to be difficult to replace. Ray has been an outstanding manager at The
Lilywhite’s and we wish him well for what ever he decides to do in the future.
Our next match is in the Velocity Trophy we are away to Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday 30 th October.
The winners of this tie have been drawn at home to Hayes & Yeading United, After the
Folkestone match we have another difficult game when we visit Hythe Town who are “flying” in
our division. This match is on Saturday 3 rd November.
Our next scheduled home match is against promoted Whitstable Town on Saturday 10 th November.
This match would be postponed if we win today. If the Whitstable match goes ahead or we
are home on November 10 th in the FA Trophy we will be commemorating Remembrance day.
Finally don't forget that clocks go back 1 hour tonight!
Hi Everyone.
From the Programme Editor
This programme now includes the player sponsors
names. I’ve added them to the Sittingbourne
“meet the team” page but may have
missed some
sponsors, so
if I have
please let me
know.
Todays visitors
Wingate
& Finchley
have a very
interesting
history which
I’ve reproduced
in the
programme.
They play at
Summers
Lane Finchley.
I visited
there in the
1960’s (yes I
am that old!)
when it was
home to a
very successful
Finchley
side who
were playing
in the Athenian league. I worked with Jim Cooley
back in those days, Jim played for Finchley
and he won an Amateur cup medal with
Wealdstone.
Following on from the news about Thamesmead
Town, I now know that the announcement
came out of the blue, even to those who
helped run the club! It still doesn't look as
though Thamesmead will survive, at least not
in this league, and the league is still to announce
how their demise (if it happens) will affect
the league table. Another club in trouble is
Nuneaton, who we used to play back in the
1990’s, and I see that Salisbury had to be resurrected
after their demise in 1995, they have
now clawed their way back to the Southern
League Premier South. Yet another Southern
League club that we used to play is Histon who
went up to the Conference North (non league
step 2) but are now back at step 5 playing in
the Eastern Counties Premier Division. It can
get worse though, as I see that Erith &
Belvedere are now at non league step 6 in the
Southern Counties East Football league
division 1 north. We played Erith & Belvedere
in the Dr Marten Southern League Division 1
North and if you go onto our archives,
accessible from our website, you can read
some of my reports of those matches,
especially interesting is the one dated 13th
March 1999 when they were at their old
ground.
It’s a tough time for many clubs at the moment.
I mentioned in the last programme about rumbles
at Ebbsfleet United regarding finances,
and I now see that the BBC reports that
“statistics show almost one in four players who
are members of the Professional Footballers
Association were unemployed in July . The
PFA describes this as astonishing.
The figures show that 1,192 footballers across
the top four divisions were out of work in the
summer, with deputy chief executive Bobby
Barnes saying: "It's almost a quarter of our
membership.
Despite this I see that Dover Athletic have announced
that the club is to go full time!
Wingate & Finchley — A Brief History
Wingate and Finchley Football club can
trace its roots back to the formation of
Finchley Football Club in 1874 making it
one of the oldest clubs in the country.
Founded by Pa Jackson, who also was instrumental
in the creation of the Corinthians,
The London Football Association as
well as later serving as secretary of the FA,
Finchley became founder members of the
Athenian League in 1912 after spells in the
London League and North London League.
They finished fourth in the maiden season,
higher than such luminaries as Grays Athletic,
Chelmsford City and Enfield.
However their stay was cut short due to the
onset of World War One and they would
only return for a lone season in 1929 before
returning to the London League and
forging success. The club’s first piece of
silverware was won during the 1934-1935
season when the League Cup was captured,
with the taste of achievement forming
Finchley went on to win the London
League in 1936-1937 before World War
Two scuppered their winning streak.
It was immediately after the conflict that
saw Major Harry Sadow, Frank Davis,
George Hyams and Asher Rebak form a
Jewish Football Club believing the field of
play was a ground of battling the ignorance
of anti-Semitism. So in 1946 Wingate Football
Club began life in the Middlesex Senior
League. The club was named after General
Orde C. Wingate who despite not being
Jewish himself oversaw the creation of the
Israeli Army during the Second World War.
The club enjoyed early success and by
1952 they were promoted to the London
League.
Meanwhile Finchley, back in the Athenian
League, were in the middle of their glory
years with the 1952-1953 season proving
to be the pinnacle. That year saw their progression
to the Third Round Proper of the
FA Cup. Defeated along the way were
Chelmsford City, Kidderminster Harriers (1-
0 at Aggborough) and Crystal Palace (3-1
at Summers Lane) before the Finches were
finally beaten 2-0 at Gay Meadow against
Shrewsbury Town.
Despite an Amateur Cup semi-final appearance,
losing to bitter local rivals Hendon at
Highbury in 1965, a sense of decline was
starting to emerge. A switch to the Isthmian
Premier League failed to stop the halt, and
in 1980-81 Finchley were relegated to the
second division.
Wingate by now had become a senior club
and were competing in the Athenian
League. Many players had become members
of the Middlesex FA representative
side and also partook on behalf of Great
Britain in the Maccabiah Games. Disaster
struck though in 1972 when their Hall Lane
ground in Hendon was lost to the M1 extension
and despite a short ground share
with Finchley FC the club reverted to junior
football.
Wingate finally returned to the senior game
with a brief merger with Leyton FC. This
partnership proved to be unsuccessful and
despite a 1984-1985 League Cup victory,
ironically defeating Finchley in the final,
both clubs went their separate ways.
In 1991 with Finchley struggling in the Isthmian
League Second Division and with
mounting debts it was announced that a
merger with Wingate would take place in
the summer. After extensive refurbishment
and a name change of the Summers Lane
ground in honour of long time Wingate supporter
Harry Abrahams, Wingate and
Finchley took to the field for the start of the
1991-1992 season.
Success was immediate and despite starting
life in the South Midlands League the
club were quickly competing in the Isthmian
League and by season 2003-2004 were
members of the newly formed Division One
North.
In recent seasons the club has continued
its growth. A brief flirtation with the Southern
League was shortly followed by the arrivals
of Manager Michael Stone and Chairman
Aron Sharpe. Now back in the Isthmian
League a youthful squad achieved seventh
position in the First Division North in
the 2008-2009.
Stone sadly left the club in 2009 after being
offered the post of Assistant Manager at
Conference giants Rushden and Diamonds.
Wingate & Finchley— A Brief History—Cont
The club’s first team manager in time for the
start of the 2009/10 season was former
Oswestry Town manager and Total Network
Solutions Llansantffraid midfielder David
Norman. At the end this season the Club
finished in a record high position of 3rd in
the Ryman Division One North, mainly
thanks to a record run of 17 matches without
defeat from the turn of the year, a run
which included 13 wins. The Club reached
the playoffs but lost out to Enfield Town in
the semi-final 3-2 in an incredible match.
This paved the way for what was to be a
monumental and unforgettable 2010/11
season.
The Club was quickly becoming the most
progressive non-league club in the area,
thanks to Sharpe’s focus on youth development.
Bobby Aisien and Medi Alabimba had
progressed from Hadley Wood and Wingate
to earn professional contracts, and in 2011
over 20 of the U16-18 age group represented
their County. Six boys at U16’s were given
scholarships with pro sides and the club
developed into a community club with a
Mencap disability initiative, work with
schools, and it entered its fourth year of the
Flex educational scheme.
A consistent league season for the First
Team saw the side match their previous 3rd
place league finish and earn a second crack
at the playoffs. In the semi-final Harlow
Town were beaten 4-2 after extra time, and
promotion to the Ryman premier Division
was won with a 118th minute winner over
Brentwood Town in extra time of the final -
The Blues winning 3-2 on their home turf.
This victory was the middle leg of a remarkable
and unique Treble. Earlier that season
the club had lifted the Ryman League Cup
having beaten Dulwich Hamlet 2-0 at Imber
Court, and London Senior Cup success was
to follow shortly afterwards when Hendon
were convincingly beaten 3-1 in the final.
Success flowed throughout the Club this
year, with the youth teams also building on
their previous season's work as they progressed
superbly. The U18's won the Middlesex
County Cup, and at U15 level the
League Title and three Cup trophies followed
(two County cups and the League
cup). Even the Under 10's were getting in
on the action as they lifted the Spring Cup!
The first season in the Ryman Premier Division
in 2011/12 saw the side secure safety
in this new level with a comfortable midtable
finish, ending up closer to the playoffs
than from relegation. The final third of the
season saw breakthroughs for youth players
Liron Mannie and David Smouha who both
played big roles in the first team squad.
Meanwhile there was huge cup success at
youth level yet again; The Under 18's won
the AFA Cup, beating Valley Park after extra
time, as well as the London County Cup.
The Under 17's won a double as they beat
Thurrock in the EJA League Cup final to
add to their earlier AFA Cup success having
beaten Bethwin 8-1! The Under 16's also
got in on the action securing their AFA Cup
title beating Woodford FC, which they added
later on securing their EJA (Herts)
League title.
Success of the youth sides prompted three
players - Ross Weinreb, Nathan Sollosi and
Joe Sharpe - to earn selection to the Great
Britain Maccabi Team for the world games
in Israel during July 2013. Meanwhile the
Barnet Mencap disability sides grew in
strength as they entered the fourth season
with the club, with three sides now competing
in the Camden Step Leagues. The year
ended on a high as McDonalds joined in lucrative
sponsorship deal.
The following season, 2012-13, was a difficult
one for the first team. Early season poor
form led to the departure of Norman in November
as ex-Northwood boss Gary Meakin
came in. The Club flirted with relegation all
season until a momentous 3-2 victory over
Lowestoft two days before the final day secured
survival. However Norman rejoined
the Club in the summer as Director of Football,
as veteran defender Daniel Nielsen
was put in place as Head Coach. Meanwhile
a new Under 21 Development squad
was set up to compete in the inaugural Ryman
U21 League.
Continued
Wingate & Finchley— A Brief History—Cont
There was continual success for the youth
sides. The U17's added the London County
Cup to an earlier EJA league title, the EJA
cup and the AFA cup. These were also followed
up with the League Regional Playoff
title. The U16's won two cups in this season,
the EJA and AFA trophies.
In 2014 the side faced another relegation
fight in the league, which was lost on goal
difference on the final day of the season
despite a 5-0 victory over Billericay Town.
However, when Worksop Town pulled out
of the Southern League due to financial
problems, Wingate & Finchley were the
first in line to earn the reprieve back to the
Ryman Premier Division.
The 2014-15 season resulted in a record
finish of 12th place in the Ryman Premier
League, and at the end of the season Norman
departed, to be replaced by Simon
Lane as Director of Football. However for
the start of 2016 he was replaced by former
Northern Ireland International Keith
Rowland and the side finished in a stable
13th position. In August 2016 the stadium
at Summers Lane was re-named after Wingate
FC co-founder Maurice Rebak who
had passed away in February of that year
aged 95.
The 2016-17 season saw the club set a
new record, finishing in 5th place in the Ryman
Premier League and qualifying for the
end of season playoffs. A last-minute defeat
at Bognor Regis Town in the semi-final
ended the season, but this was a magnificent
achievement and saw the Blues win
the League's Team Performance of the
Year Award.
A ninth-place finish followed in 2017-18 as
the Blues narrowly missed out on a second
successive play-off berth. Over the summer
the Club embarked on an extensive
state-of-the-art refurbishment of the stadium,
for the first time since 1991’s merger,
giving the clubhouse a much-welcomed
overhaul and making the stadium one of
the most impressive in non-league football.
Buildbase FA Trophy Preliminary Round
Faversham Town 0 Sittingbourne 2, Att 310
Two terrific goals gave Sittingbourne a comfortable
win over their local rivals and a precious
place in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy,
A clean sheet, no bookings, and £3,000 in
prize money from the FA - what’s not to like
about a good afternoon’s work?
I don’t remember many wins for Sittingbourne
at Faversham over the years so this was more
than welcome, though having said that this particular
Faversham side were nowhere near the
standard of some of their predecessors.
Sittingbourne made four changes from the team
that lost 2-0 in the rain at Haywards Heath the
previous Saturday, though three of those left
out – Reiss Crimmen, Dan Parkinson and Johan
Caney-Bryan – all ended up playing a part
off the substitutes’ bench.
Of the four players who came in, two of them,
Lewis Chambers and Josh Dorling, suffered
first half injuries and had to go off. And the other
two? Well, they were the two goalscorers so
praise manager Aslan Odev for his team selection
there. Player-coach Nathan Elder started
for the first time and headed Sittingbourne powerfully
in front, while Harrison Hatfull scored a
worldie to clinch the victory.
It was a blustery day at Salters Lane, but the
sun shone, and Sittingbourne looked by far the
more impressive side in the first half, forcing
Faversham to over-hit long hopeful balls forward
or just go backwards or sideways to try
and find some space.
Ira Jackson was a constant threat down the
right all game and he set up Bola Dawodu for a
good early chance but the keeper got down to
save well.
At the other end, a Faversham header hit the
bar and then went over, and I thought athletic
keeper Patrick Lee tipped it there, but the referee
gave a goal-kick so obviously he can’t have
done!
Elder’s sheer strength always made him a
handful for the Faversham defence but when
Josh Dorling tried to find him with an angled
cross it carried fractionally too high for him in
the wind.
But it was the big experienced striker who
broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when Chambers
hit the ball forward and Elder half-dived
and half-jumped to meet it with a powerful
header which keeper Benham got a hand to but
couldn’t keep out.
Lee – and how well he’s come on in the last few
weeks – made a couple of smart saves and Sittingbourne
should have doubled their lead
when Dawodu jinked his way clear but tried to
shoot when he needed to get his head up and
give Elder an open goal.
With Elder, Dawodu, Jackson and Tom Loynes
as a front four, Sittingbourne are impressive as
an attacking force and will always create chances
if the rest of the team get the ball up to them
in good positions.
Faversham had a bit more of the game at the
start of the second half but Ben Fitchett showed
great anticipation and positioning to shut out
attack after attack, and for a time the game was
a bit of a stalemate.
Then came the Hatfull stunner. Loynes cut in
from the wing after 65 minutes and slid the ball
sideways to the 18-year-old midfielder. He advanced
a few yards to near the edge of the area
and when no-one closed him down, he hit a
fantastic shot into the top corner for his first Sittingbourne
goal. A goal as soon as it left his
foot. As his teammates understandably mobbed
him, Elder was shouting: ‘Out or order, out of
order.’ I think I knew what he meant.
Hatfull oozed confidence for the rest of the
game and Sittingbourne never looked like conceding
their lead, though Lee did make a couple
more good saves and one Faversham cross
bounced off his crossbar.
Once more, Sittingbourne got warm and loyal
support from a large number of fans who made
the short trip down the A2, and they had a
whale of a time celebrating this deserved victory.
Away wins are always special, and threegrand
bonuses don’t come along every week
either.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Josh Dorling (Reiss Crimmen,
32 min), Harrison Hatfull, Lex Allan, Ben Fitchett,
Ira Jackson, Lewis Chambers (Dan Parkinson,
45 min), Nathan Elder (Johan Caney-
Brown, 75 min), Bola Dawodu, Tom Loynes.
Subs not used: Joe Denny, Mason East.

Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 1 Phoenix Sports 1, Att 155
Praise Sittingbourne for a never-say-die attitude
which resulted in them grabbing a point
for an honourable draw against more than decent
opponents.
Lex Allan got the equaliser, his first goal of the
season, and reward for a brave man-of-thematch
performance in his main job as a central
defender.
It was Sittingbourne’s first goal in three Bostik
South East League matches and a welcome
end to a difficult little spell which saw them
lose to Ramsgate and Haywards Heath.
Phoenix arrived riding high in second place in
the table and you could see why as they defended
strongly, passed well, and were always
a threat with some pace up front.
But they paid the price for not pushing on after
taking the lead midway through the second
half – or was it just that Sittingbourne wrested
control of the game and the visitors finally succumbed
to the mounting pressure.
It’s not possible to hear everything manager
Aslan Odev instructs his players, but I heard
the word ‘quality’ shouted at them in the first
half and ‘belief’ towards the end in the second.
And his players did believe that they could get
something from the game, and good for him
installing that confidence into what is still a
very young team who are growing together.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon at Woodstock
and the team showed just one change
from the side that beat Faversham in the FA
Trophy the previous Saturday, Reiss Crimmen
starting in place of sidelined skipper Chris
Webber. That meant a full home debut for
coach Nathan Elder, and the experienced striker
also took over the captain’s armband.
Sittingbourne started brightly with the everdangerous
Tom Loynes creating space for
himself for a shot which visiting keeper Phillips
turned over his bar.
But Phoenix, whose management team included
the familiar figure of ex-Brickies manager
Nick Davies in the dug-out, were soon fully involved
in the game and Allan had to get back
behind Patrick Lee to clear after the keeper
was quickly closed down.
Sittingbourne threaded together some decent
moves but cut out few first half chances, and
mostly the ball was played around well by
Phoenix with one chance lobbed over Lee but
over the bar as well, the keeper saving well
with his left foot from a close range shot and
Crimmen heading off the line after one of several
corners came in.
Elder got a sniff of a chance as an even second
half get under way but he had more space
around him than he thought and failed to get
his shot away.
For all their neat football, Phoenix didn’t threaten
too much and it took a defensive header in
the wrong direction by Josh Dorling to force
Lee into a 64th minute save.
But three minutes later the visitors were
ahead, and what a simple goal it was too. Ex-
Brickie Conrad Lee threw in a left-wing corner
and defender Berry had somehow lost his
marker to easily head home from close range.
Well done, Sittingbourne, for responding so
well with the most danger created from set
pieces – free-kicks, corners and throw-ins. Especially
throw-ins.
Phoenix keeper Phillips did particularly well
under this aerial bombardment caused by Lewis
Chambers launching the ball into his sixyard
area, but he took a risk too many as Crimmen
played a free-kick into the area with 89
minutes played.
There were simply too many players – from
both sides – in front of him for Phillips to get to
the ball and Allan got there first to flick it over
them all and into the net. Keepers are so protected
these days in crowded penalty areas
but though he appealed longingly, the referee
held his nerve and allowed it. So both goals
were headed in by central defenders up to join
in at set pieces.
Even then the excitement wasn’t over as
Loynes cut in beautifully from the left and saw
glory flash before his eyes only to power his
injury time shot just over and wide of the far
corner.
A draw was nothing less than Sittingbourne
deserved, and they’re going to have to play
with all this determination and passion once
again at home next Saturday to have a chance
against opponents from a higher league in the
FA Trophy. Expect the word belief will play its
part in Odev’s pre-match talk.
