President’s Message from Dorothe Fair
HELLO EVERYONE,
It’s fall and all the Canadian fall colours are
here. Vibrant red and yellow leaves turning and
finally falling, covering the ground as the weather
gets cooler. Beautiful orange pumpkins can be seen on
front porches, embedded in gardens as decoration or as
jack o’lanterns. My favourite of course is turning those
pumpkins into scrumptious pies and tarts.
By the time you read my message, Thanksgiving will be
over along with the October 22 municipal election and our
Hallowe’en dance. The NHL season will have started with
the very first Leafs game played on October 3 against their
old rival from the days of the original 6 teams, the Montreal
Canadiens. For those who follow hockey and are hard
line fans, the LEAFS won their season opener in overtime,
a 3 to 2 win over Montreal. For some, the start of the hockey
season signals that summer is over and Christmas is
soon upon us. For others, it means the bats and gloves are
back in storage waiting for the Dunedin grapefruit season
next spring.
I’m usually very newsy, but this month I’d like to devote
my message to highlighting our two MAJOR SHOWS
coming very soon.
SPECIAL EVENT: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9: “THE
DAY BEFORE”, at 2 pm. (Doors open at 1:30 pm.)
The Silvertones Choir and New Horizons Band will provide
a special event of inspirational music and songs.
Military memories shared by seniors will be captured
through video interviews. Last year was the first time we
presented this Military history through song and stories and
more than 250 people attended.
Please mark your calendar now and join us as we sing
songs from WWI and WWII. This is an event that recognizes
family and friends who were, or still are, involved in
GWSA Email
Updates
Each month, approximately
mid-month, the Membership
and Marketing Committee
at the GWSA will send a
GWSA Email Update. It will
highlight a few of the exciting things happening at the
GWSA: important communications from the Board
(such as construction updates), and upcoming programs
by CSS. We are planning to include topics of
interest to Seniors, including several pertaining to
health and wellness.
You can unsubscribe from the updates at any time
by clicking on the “unsubscribe” link which will be
displayed at the bottom of every update.
If you have previously completed a paper “Consent
to Receive Electronic Communications,” we are asking
you to complete the electronic sign-up process described
below. We can’t sign you up manually AND
have our list editor keep track of the CASL (Canadian
Anti-Spam Legislation) compliance for those paper
forms. It’s one way or the other and we have chosen to
use the electronic option.
You can receive the GWSA Email Updates by completing
the steps described below:
1. To begin, please send an email to:
subscribe@gwsa-guelph.ca. If you’d like, you can
put the word subscribe in the Subject line or you can
skip that part. In just a few minutes, you’ll get a
message with a link.
2. Click on the link you received, fill in the appropriate
fields, and click “Subscribe to List”.
3. To ensure you really want to receive GWSA
email updates – and to make sure all email addresses
are error-free – we’ll send a message asking
you to confirm.
4. Once you respond to the confirmation message,
your registration is complete and you’ll receive
our Welcome letter.
We have also placed a link under the “Popular
Links” section on all web pages on the GWSA website.
Clicking on this link will also initiate the
signup process. This will take you to step 2 (above).
Simply follow through with steps 2 to 4 to complete
the process.
You can expect to receive your first GWSA Email
Update approximately mid-month after you sign up!
with us? We are averaging about 16 players a week
and are situated in the Dining Room.
We charge $1.50 per week and pretty well all of
that goes back to the GWSA. We play from 6:30 to
8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500 in real casino
chips and, as we do not play for money, we work on
a point system; the one with the most points each
week is the winner. We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm, whichever comes first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is interested in
playing. Just follow the laughter to find us.
We have about six ladies playing at present and
would always welcome more. We do not want to become
a men’s club! Remember, you have to be a
member of GWSA to play.
Walking Club
We have had an enjoyable walking season and the
weather has been good to us most of the time. We
have walked in Rockwood Conservation area and
around Fergus, ending up at the Goofy Newfie for
lunch, and we had two more walks in October. We
will have wound up our regular walking season with
our annual Pot Luck supper. Thank you walkers for
turning out and making it a very pleasant season even
though some of the walks were during a hot spell.
We have quite a few new members this year and we
have enjoyed getting to know you. I hope you have
enjoyed yourselves. We will be having winter socials
on January 8, February 15 and March 14 next year.
Check our reports for further details nearer the time.
If you want to see a great show, a few of our members
are participating in the annual Variety Show in
December. Watch out for the posters advertising it.
Watercolour Painters Club
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters Club provides
an opportunity for watercolour painters to practise
their hobby along with others sharing the same interest,
while encouraging one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration. While we do not
offer classes or lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters. There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the GWSA is required.
We meet on the 1st and 5th Wednesday from
12:30 to 4:00 pm and 3rd Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.
- 4:00 pm in Room 2.
THE LITTLE RED FLOWER
by Art MacPherson
It was a cool and cloudy day, like many we had
seen before,
The people, young and old, came out to honour
those who went to war.
And Veterans, fewer now this year, still braved
the cold to reappear
As they had done, year after year,
trying to fight off a bitter tear.
Before the epitaph of stone, it seemed
each veteran stood alone
With memories deeply stamped within,
recalling how it all had been.
The crowd assembled on that day was
proud of those who gave their all
Those who made it back alive, and
those whose fate it was to fall.
Then I saw a little lad, who held the hand of a
grey-haired gent,
The youngster seemed oh so proud of the older
man now tired and bent.
And then I heard the child implore, “What’s that
small red flower for?”
He paused a bit and then replied, “To grow, for
those who fought and died.
When I was just a lad, you know, we had to leave
our homes and go
To distant places across the sea, to fight a fight
for liberty.
I know that’s hard for you to see, that
some should die for you to be
Standing here in a peaceful land,
happy, healthy… holding my hand.
The little flowers on our chests are just
to say a simple thanks
To those young folks who gave their
all, amid the bombs and guns and
tanks.
So, my dear child, please come each
year, and wet the flower with a tear
To keep it growing, though we be gone, our
sacrifice may still live on.”
The fall is a time to take pause and say thanks.
November holds several days which are special to
many of us: Remembrance Day and Random Acts
of Kindness Day are a couple of special days set
aside for gratitude.
November 2 is Random Acts of Kindness Day.
This is a Canada-wide initiative, encouraged locally
by the Guelph Community Foundation.
This is an opportunity to do something kind for
someone else. It is a day to appreciate fellow citizens
and build community. It is not about fundraising
or giving money, it is about celebrating
kindness. Here at the City of Guelph and GWSA,
we are all about kindness. Inclusivity encourages
kindness. There are many things you can do:
Smile
Say hi to someone you don’t know
Invite someone new to come to Evergreen with
you
Invite someone who is alone to join your group
in the restaurant
Park in a spot farther away from the front door
to leave the closer space for someone arriving
later
Buy someone a coffee
Give a thank you note to someone who has
helped you
Donate your time
There are many workshops and special events
planned for the coming months. Detailed information
regarding those events can be found in this
publication, and also online at www.guelph.ca/
seniors. A quick highlight of events:
November 9—The Day Before—hosted by the
GWSA
November 17—Community Craft Sale at Evergreen
November 29, 30 & Dec. 1—Christmas Variety
Show.
See you at the Centre!
Get involved! Random acts of kindness are contagious.
information, please check out:
in any of the areas listed above
and joining the dynamic team,
12
There was a big turnout for the Volunteer
Appreciation Lunch held on September
13. The meal of lasagna and salad, with
apple blossoms for dessert, was enjoyed
by all. Here several of the volunteers have
their picture taken with this lovely
harvest backdrop.
The GWSA Line Dancing Activity Group participated
in the kick-off event for the Guelph Family
Health Team’s “Hustle for the Harvest” Fit to Move
Activity Challenge on September 21, 2018, in Riverside
Park. The activity was similar to the Amazing
Race in that teams of four, made up of local businesses,
organizations and groups, were competing
for the title of Guelph’s Most Active Team over the
period of September 21 to October 5.
Most of the teams participating were dressed in
costume and went from one activity to another. Line
Dancing was one of the activities. What fun we had
teaching each team how to line dance. If they didn’t
do it right, we made them do it over again. We had a
thunderstorm at one point but it didn’t stop us from
dancing or the participants from competing. We certainly
lived up to the GWSA motto “Be Active, Get
Involved, Make Friends”. We did all that and more.
Thanks to our instructors, Kathy Kemp, Betty Chu,
Carol Lightfoot and Patty Liberatore for taking the
teams through the dances, and to our dancers who
came and danced with us; thank you for making it
fun. A big thanks to Gord Clegg for setting up the
sound system for us and to Barry Scott for helping
him bring it down to the park. Thanks also to Ross
Knechtel for taking lots of photos. Here are a few
from that day.
We would like to thank Haley and Camille of the
Guelph Family Health Team for inviting us to participate
and we hope to be invited again next year.
Hearing Improvement Committee
We are meeting as usual on the first
Wednesday in the month at 2 pm in the
Board Room at the Evergreen Seniors
Community Centre.
Dorothy Scott, who most know as a very
important part of our group, is retiring
due to failing health. She will be sorely
missed by all.
We are pleased to know that Royce
Brown is taking her place. We hope to
listen and be able to provide help to our
members and our friends who just drop
in. Should you or someone you know have
an interest in helping those with hearing
loss navigate the journey, we would be
grateful.
Art in the Hall
the halls of the Evergreen Centre.
If you are interested in having your
work in a solo exhibition, or if you
are interested in having a few pieces
of your work as part of a group
display at the Evergreen Centre in
2019, contact Ted Pritchard at 519-
826-6121 or tpritcha@rogers.com.
If you are interested in sitting on
Art Studio in 2
Art Studio in 2 is an art group
working out of Room 2 at the Evergreen
Centre on alternate Tuesday
evenings from 6:30 pm until
9:30 pm starting the first week of
the month and on alternate
Wednesday afternoons from 12:30
pm until 4:00 pm starting the second
week of the month. The artists
in this club choose their own media
to work with. Examples of
these are acrylic painting, Bunka,
drawing, pastels, porcelain painting,
printmaking, stitchery/textile
arts, watercolour painting and others.
Room 2 isn’t vented properly
for the use of oil paints, turpentine,
linseed oil or other strong-smelling
media. There are restrictions on
perfume use also at the Centre to
respect those artists with allergies.
Artists will need to provide all the
materials needed to complete their
work and be prepared to share their
technique and insights with other
artists. The membership in Art Studio
in 2 is limited to 24 and yearly
membership costs $25.00 including
HST, in addition to the GWSA
membership. If you are interested
in joining Art Studio in 2 for 2019,
contact Ted Pritchard at 519-826-
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. The Bunka artist
uses many different stitch techniques
in order to achieve the desired
effect of depth and interest,
but unlike other forms of needle
art, there are no knots to tie and
mistakes are easily corrected. This
group is for all skill levels and
meets every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon.
Craft Group
We have been very busy with our
craft group. Our store is full with
all our lovely winter things. We
were told we can’t have more than
34 people in our room but sometimes
we have as many as 43 coming
out on Friday, so if you would
like to knit or sew for us, pick up
the wool or material on Friday and
work on it at home. Don’t forget
the Craft Show on Nov. 17. We
will have our store open as well as
tables in the gym. See you there
and thanks for all the donations.
Cribbage
If you enjoy a game of cribbage,
join us on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm.
We have a good time and everyone
is welcome.
County, we put on thicker sweaters,
bundle up and keep our camera
they can be of many colours,
fabrics, shapes and sizes.
The results are now hanging for
your viewing pleasure in the Evergreen
Restaurant.
We are planning another special
photo sharing day for November
good chance to see what a creative
crowd we can be.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment
ranging from mobile phones and
point and shoot cameras to fancy
DSLR models. We share a common
interest in photography as a
hobby and we learn from each
other. New members are always
welcome. If you are interested in
joining, contact Jean McClelland
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some
fun, laughter, socialization and
exercise. It’s easy to learn, but can
be challenging for those with a
competitive nature. All levels of
skill invited. Pickleball equipment
is provided.
Scrabble
Our Scrabble group meets Thursdays
from 1:00 to 3:45 pm at the
tables in the Evergreen Hallway
near the Library. Cost is $1.00 per
visit. We play relaxed, but challenging
games using the Scrabble
Dictionary 5 th Edition as our reference.
Skill levels range from beginner
to advanced. Come play at
whatever table you wish. Enjoy a
laugh, score a Bingo if you can,
and learn a new word or two with
other word lovers!
months. You also have the option
of paying $1.00 per game. Register
the first time you play. Beginners
available. The group plays Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1:30 to
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir, formed
nearly 40 years ago, now boasts
over 50 members. This mixed
group of older adults share their
love of singing - songs old and
new. They also love to entertain
with their singing and to spread
cheer.
Preparing for this upcoming season,
the choir has two sets of completely
new and exciting music.
The first performance this season
will be The Day Before on Friday,
November 9, and the songs will
include I’d Like to Teach the
World to Sing, Keep the Home
Fires Burning, Let There be Peace
on Earth, No Man is an Island,
Our Home, Our Land, The Journey
and Hymn to Freedom.
In the Christmas Variety Show
this year, the choir will be joined
by Steven Berriman for some of
their songs which will include We
Need a Little Christmas, Deck the
Halls, O Christmas Tree, Christmas
is a Feeling, Do You Hear
What I Hear, Go Tell It On The
Mountain, O Holy Night, and The
Hal Leonard, Christmas Melody
followed by the usual Singalong.
For more information about joining
the choir, please call Arlene
McEllistrum at 519-821-4332.
It costs $10.00 plus HST to join
the Everwhite Ski Club. You register
and pay for the Downhill Ski
Club at the front desk of the Evergreen
Centre. It helps to own a 5-7
Pass purchased from Blue Mountain
well before the start of the
2019 ski season. Every Monday,
we carpool by meeting at the
lower Evergreen Parking Lot by
the Enabling Garden at 8:00 am,
drive to Blue Mountain, and return
to Guelph by 6:00 pm.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open
weekdays between 9:00 am and
4:00 pm and any other time the
Evergreen Centre may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy to give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $70 (plus tax) buys you access
to the Snooker Room any
time it is open and all the snooker
you care to play.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook —
“A Lending Library”
We are open Monday to
Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
* * * *
Here is an interesting book that is
a little larger than most which will
provide many enjoyable hours of
reading.
It is called “The Punishment She
Deserves” by Elizabeth George
and it is a very intriguing story of
two detectives sent to a quiet town
in northern England. They are there
to confirm that a local deacon,
while in police custody, having
been accused of a dreadful crime, is
found dead in the police station.
His death is ruled a suicide, and
Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers
and Detective Superintendent Isabelle
Ardery meet with local police
to go over the original investigation.
Barbara Havers is not happy to
simply follow orders and confirm a
suicide. She is determined to get to
the truth regarding the events leading
up to the Deacon’s death.
Once back in London with their
reports filed, the Chief decides to
send Barbara Havers back to Ludlow
with Inspector Thomas Lynley
to follow the clues that Barbara
may have uncovered.
This story is a real page turner, as
so many people in this small town
seem to have something to hide,
and are prepared to lie to the police
about it.
With a dash of British humour
here and there, it is a book full of
suspense that I hope you will enjoy
reading, as I did.
I hope to see many of you at our
Avoiding TRUMPLAND
with a Wonderful Staycation (Part 2)
by Ross Coulter
As we approached Kamloops, several burnt out areas
of forest from previous forest fires were passed.
There was a smoky haze settled in the surrounding
valleys that could be mistaken for fog or smog but
which was indeed smoke from current existing fires
throughout B.C. but not in the immediate area. One
night in Kamloops was quite enough and anticipation
was high for the next day’s adventure en route
to Vancouver.
Perhaps the most exhilarating experience, surpassing
the trip up Sulphur Mountain, rafting on the
Bow River or walking on a glacier, unfolded as we
followed the Fraser River en route to Vancouver. A
stop at Hell’s Gate and the Tramway ride across the
On route to Kamloops the next day, our second
wildlife sighting offered a close-up photo op of a
large buck elk grazing at the side of the road. He
sported a multi-tined rack of antlers as testimony to
his senior years. Cars, trucks and buses travelling in
both directions stopped to pay homage to his
majesty.
river and back. Hell’s Gate is the narrowest point of
the Fraser Gorge which sees over 200 million gallons
of water per minute flow through. That’s twice
the volume of water that passes over Niagara Falls.
Moving onward, our next stop was scheduled at
Wells Gray Provincial Park for views of Mt. Robson,
the highest peak in Canada, and Mt. Terry Fox.
Back on the coach, it took more than a few minutes
for adrenalin levels to fall back to normal as we approached
Vancouver for our next two-night stay.
We were up bright and early in the morning the next
day for a city tour which included ample time to fully
enjoy Stanley Park before moving on to Gastown,
Chinatown, English Bay and a drive by some of the
more expensive real estate in the city. The sightseeing
ended at the Grenville Island Public Market
where we stopped for lunch. The rest of the afternoon
was at leisure to explore on our own or to put
ones feet up and relax. The next day would be busy
as we would be moving on to Victoria.
The next morning, after a ferry ride of approximately
2 hours, we arrived in Victoria and headed
straight to Butchart Gardens to take in the world renowned
display of floral splendor. The weather cooperated
with bright sunshine, as it had for most of
the trip, showing off the multi-hued colours of the
hundreds of thousands of flowers at their best.
A quick tour of city highlights followed as we proceeded
to our hotel where we were greeted by a piper
in full regalia. No! It was not the Empress, but comfortable,
quaint, close to the Legislature, City Centre
and more than adequate.
The next and last day of the tour was filled with an
escorted walking tour of the inner harbour and the
city. Our knowledgeable guide regaled us with
Retire with Confidence!
With thanks to the Ontario Government Seniors Community Grant Program, PIN, The People and Information
Network (formerly the Volunteer Centre of Guelph Wellington) is pleased to offer a Fall Information
Series for adults age 55+.
Retirement is often viewed as the end-goal to a lifetime of working, however, it is also a time of momentous
change. Some struggle to seek and identify outside of the workforce while others fear a loss of income,
and struggle with complexities caused by debilitating health. It is increasingly important to acknowledge the
need for an individualized retirement plan, as no stage in life is a one size fits all.
The Information Series, called ‘Retire with Confidence’, offers mini-educational modules related to seniors:
housing and transportation, health and well-being, safety and finance, and recreation and community
involvement. Each module will include ‘power talks’, with the goal to provide an overview of a topic and
related referrals.
Retirement, preparing for and recently retired, is an ideal time to introduce connections, resources and information
that help to establish healthy life decisions into older adulthood. The educational modules will
approach health from a holistic perspective and go beyond physical health to include financial, psychological
and social well-being.
Through our work in information and referral, we understand the services most requested by seniors and
are in a unique position to promote those services even before they are needed. Furthermore, the onset of
retirement is a prime period for promotion of preventative resources that target risk factors often accompanying
older adulthood, such as social isolation and deteriorating health. Through our work to promote and
recruit volunteers, we are well positioned to help seniors find meaningful ways to engage in their community
through volunteering.
PIN, The People and Information Network, is pleased to offer this unique opportunity that will also include
select information booths, draw prizes, and food and drink by the following local business:
• Cobbs Bread
• Chocolats Favoris
• Sleeman Brewery
• The Olive Experience
• Trotters Butcher Shop and Charcuterie
stories of local lore, history and characters before
leaving us to enjoy leisure time in the afternoon for
further exploration or relaxation before celebrating in
the evening at our farewell dinner.
The next day was early up, bags out, breakfast, departure
for the airport and the non-stop flight home.
The five hours on the flight was spent reflecting on
the beauty of Canada’s west, the fine people we had
met, and whether Casey and Clancy would be happy
to see us home!
JUST A COMMON SOLDIER - W ritten in 1987
by the late A. Lawrence Vaincourt (2009)
He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was
falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the
past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he
had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes,
every one.
And tho’ sometimes, to his neighbours, his tales
became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew
whereof he spoke.
But we will hear his tales no longer for old Bill has
passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer, for a soldier died
today.
He will not be mourned by many, just his children
and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own
way,
And the world won’t note his passing, though a
soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in
state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that
they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that
they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and
unsung.
He was just a common soldier and his ranks are
growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his
like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the
soldier’s part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians
start.
If we cannot do him honour while he’s here to hear
the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage at the ending of
his days.
Perhaps just a single headline in a paper that would
say:
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.
