Wichita Mountains The Wichita Mountains and the Arbuckle Mountains are among the world’s oldest mountains, dating from the Pennsylvania Period, 320 million years ago. They were once the size of the Alps until the forces of nature reduced them to exposed outcrops and eroded stumps. The first humans to arrive in the region were nomadic, following herds of prehistoric animals such as large reptiles and mammoths. Between 20,000 and 2,000 years ago, Folsom hunters, Ozark Bluff Dwellers, and other Archaic people continued their nomadic lifestyle, evidenced by spear points they left from their hunts. About 2,000 years ago, <strong>Oklahoma</strong>’s primitive people abandoned cave and ledge dwellings and began building more permanent structures. Opposite page and above: Wichita Mountains.
