The railroads led the movement for the opening of the Unassigned Lands for homesteaders in the post-Civil War era. By pressuring the federal government to open that part of Oklahoma
not occupied by Indian Tribes, the railroad hoped to expand their business in the area. The railroads employed such lobbyists as E. C. Boudinot, a Cherokee, and helped fund such Boomers
as David L. Payne to pressure congress to open what became known as “The Promised Land.” The actual opening of the Unassigned Lands in 1889 is depicted in this detail from a Charles
Banks Wilson mural in the state capitol.
