Over her lifetime, Edith Kinney Gaylord
(1916-2001) supported many organizations
and projects, often anonymously. Her interests
were diverse, ranging from education and
health to the arts and environment. In 1982,
she formed two foundations to carry on her
giving—Inasmuch Foundation and Ethics and
Excellence in Journalism Foundation.
Inasmuch Foundation is dedicated to the
betterment of people and the communities
and neighborhoods in which they live. It
was named after careful consideration by
Edith, who selected the word Inasmuch as a
reflection of what she wanted the foundation
to embody—an institution created to aid all
those in our communities. The name was
taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew in
the King James Version of the Bible, where
Jesus expressed, “Inasmuch as ye have done
it unto one of the least of these, my brethren,
ye have done it unto me.”
Today, Inasmuch remains dedicated to
that vision. The core of its philanthropy is
intended to enrich and enhance the quality of
lives it touches; to lessen suffering whenever
possible and to strengthen and support
institutions and organizations in ways that
benefit communities and the individuals
served. The foundation assists charitable
and educational organizations in achieving
their goals and has provided grants to
691 organizations totaling $122.6 million
since its inception.

many of the state’s most important programs
