South central Oklahoma, or Chickasaw Country, was
the home to the Chickasaws after the federal government
moved many Tribes of American Indians to Oklahoma in
the nineteenth century. Today, the Chickasaw Nation is a
powerful force in the Oklahoma economy. Its WinStar World
Casino at Thackerville is the largest casino in the United
States and the second-largest in the world. Other casinos such
as the Riverwind near Norman draw hundreds of thousands
of visitors and provide a first-class entertainment venue.
The region’s past is preserved at the Greater Southwest
Historical Museum in Ardmore and the Chickasaw Cultural
Center in Sulphur. Many lakes and camping areas dot
Chickasaw Country. The Arbuckle Mountains, considered to
be among the oldest mountains in the world, feature the
seventy-seven foot Turner Falls. Farming and ranching are
still big business in the area. Garvin and Grady counties are
the nation’s major suppliers of broomcorn.
