A new initiative to give dogs a warm
welcome in Bury St Edmunds...
DOG FRIENDLY BURY
Shops, eateries, places to stay,
attractions, and other businesses
will be able to display the
#dogfriendlybse paw print logo
sticker in their window and put
out a dog water bowl to show
they are dog friendly.
The initiative, funded by Bury St
Edmunds Town Council, aims to help
visitors and residents easily identify
businesses that are dog friendly in and
around Bury St Edmunds.
‘Dog-Friendly Bury St Edmunds’ was
launched at Really Rather Good, a café
in Abbeygate Street and just one of the
many dog friendly businesses in the
town.
You can find a list of dog friendly places
If you are a business that would like to join, contact the
Town Council Offices on 01284 725111 or email info@
burystedmunds-tc.gov.uk. Follow Dog Friendly Bury
St Edmunds on twitter: twitter.com/Dogfriendlybse
and Instagram: www.instagram.com/dogfriendlybse/
#dogfriendlybse.
in and around Bury St Edmunds who have signed up
to the initiative and who display the Dog Friendly
Bury St Edmunds paw print sticker in their window on
the Bury St Edmunds Town Council website at
www.burystedmunds-tc.gov.uk/home/dogfriendly
On the website you can also find a ‘Dog-Friendly
Charter’ which sets out the responsibilities of both
the business owners and dog owners.
This will include some safety guidance and it is
important to note that business owners still have the
right to refuse entry or ask someone to leave the
premises if a dog is unruly, out of control or
anti-social.
A Winter Wedding
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
Winter weddings can
be utterly magical and
romantic, but there are
a few inevitable issues
that go hand in hand with
weddings held during the
darker months.
If you’re having a winter
wedding, don’t panic; all
these problems are really
small and totally avoidable
with some preparations
beforehand. Here are my
tops tips:
It will be cold so accessories will be important to keep
warm. A faux fur stole, a veil, a cape or a chic cardie
are all good options. Alternatively opt for a long sleeve
wedding dress.
2. VELVET CHIC FOR THE GUYS...
For grooms and groomsmen a velvet blazer is ideal. It’s
a nice thick fabric which will keep the guys warm, plus
is perfectly on-trend.
3. DON’T FORGET BEAUTY PREP...
Chapped lips and dry skin are inevitable come winter.
Keep your lips moisturised in the run up to the wedding
(I highly recommend Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream)
use a good face moisturiser and have a chapstick in
your clutch on the day.
4. UNDER YOUR DRESS...
If it’s very cold you can always wear thick tights under
your wedding dress (as long as it’s long) - nobody will
know! This goes for your bridesmaids too.
1. INVEST IN WINTER
ACCESSORIES
5. CONSIDER STYLISH WINTER FOOTWEAR...
Boots can be a stylish (and practical) bridal shoe
20

WEDDING
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #73 | #73 WEDDING
option for winter weddings,
especially if it rains.
6. INDULGE IN SOME GLITTER...
You can’t get more festive than
bridesmaids in glitter. Sequin or
glitter dresses are always easy to
find come winter, plus they look
wonderful in photos.
7. EXTRA TRAVEL TIME...
Bad weather means bad traffic, so
give extra time for travel to your
ceremony - no matter how near or
far you are going.
8. ADD ROMANCE WITH
CANDLES...
It will be dark quite early. Embrace it
with lots of romantic candle light in
both your ceremony and reception
space.
9. WINTER WEDDING COLOURS...
Decorate in rich, warm tones of
berry red, burgundy, black and gold.
Add extra wintry romance with lots
of natural greenery, or even a hint
of tartan.
10. KEEP GUESTS WARM...
Consider making an effort to ensure
your guests are kept warm and
cheery once they arrive. A hot drink
on arrival is a nice and simple idea.
DON’T FORGET...
Ice cold blue hands are not a good
look in winter wedding pictures, this
is where hand warmers come in.
Until next time...
Howard Winstone
the Welsh
Wizzard...
NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #73
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
Howard Winstone was a
remarkable fighter by any
standards of the imagination.
Even after losing the tips off of
three of his fingers on his right
hand in an accident at work the
Welshman showed a fighting
spirit to overcome this disability.
Winstone became a wizard in
the ring with his speed and
clever movement. Winstone who
was born on the 15 April 1939
had before turning professional
a successful amateur career
winning the Amateur Boxing
Association bantamweight
title in 1958 and in the same
year a gold medal at the
Commonwealth games then
called (Empire).
In the professional ranks
Winstone won not just
the British, European and
featherweight titles but also
the world crown in said weight
category. Winstone stopped
Japan’s Mitsunori Seki at the
Royal Albert Hall Kensington in
London for the vacant World
Boxing Council championship on
the 23rd January 1968 in round
nine of a slated fifteen. (This was
the Welshman’s fourth attempt
at a world featherweight title.
Previous challenges took place
against Mexico’s Vicente Saldivar
on the 7th September 1965 for
the undisputed championship.
Saldivar was a man destined
to be ranked with the greats
in the division. Winstone gave
the Mexican a difficult night’s
work at the Earls Court Arena
in Kensington London but lost a
fifteen round point’s decision.
On the 15th June 1967 Winstone
challenged the Mexican for a
second time the fight was close
and a number in attendance felt
that the Welshman may have
shaded it. Once again Winstone
came up short losing a fifteen
round point’s decision at Ninian
Park, Cardiff in Wales to the
champion.
The third attempt took place
on the 14th October 1967 in
a contest which saw the saw
Welsh fighter travel to the
Estadio Azteca in Mexico
City, Mexico to battle Saldivar.
Pundits did not feel Winstone
would bring the title home,
commonsense dictated that if
he couldn’t defeat the Mexican
on home turf how was he going
to defeat the champion in his
own backyard, plus he had to
deal with the country’s high
altitude. Winstone put in a brave
performance yet once again
suffered defeat when stopped
by Saldivar in round twelve of
fifteen.
24
The surprise retirement of
Saldivar after the Winstone
victory opened the door for the
Welshman’s winning attempt at
the crown against Mitsunori Seki.
Winstone sadly did not have a
long reign as World champion
since he lost the title in his first
defence against Jose Legra a
Cuban born fighter who was
resident in Spain. The contest
took place on the 24 July 1968.
The venue was the Coney Beach
Arena in Porthcawl Wales.
(Winstone had previously
defeated Legra by way of a ten
round points decision at the
Winter Gardens in Blackpool on
the 22 June 1965.)
Winstone was now clearly
passed his best, time and hard
fights had caught up with
him. Prior to the fight Legra
was favoured to take the
championship and did so when
he stopped Winstone in round
five of a scheduled fifteen.
Howard did not fight again after
the Legra fight he duly retired in
1969 after comprising a record
of 67 bouts with 61 victories and
six defeats.
Winstone who was awarded the
MBE sadly passed away on the
30 September 2000 at the age
of sixty one year’s five months
and fifteen days.

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | #73 ISSUE | #73 RICK WAKEMAN
RICK WAKEMAN
We speak to Rick Wakeman about his upcoming tour..
Following the hugely successful Piano
Portraits tour last year, in support of the
album of the same name, Rick Wakeman
will return in Autumn 2018 with a new show
based on the follow up release, entitled Piano
Odyssey, which will be released September
14th.
journey, all accompanied by his hilarious
memories and anecdotes about the tunes,
plus a few musical surprises.
In December, an additional special Christmas
tour will follow, in which the setlist will be
given a distinctly seasonal twist.
The now twenty-six date tour will feature even
more classic tracks given Rick’s unique piano
treatment, and will travel to towns and cities
not previously visited in 2017.
Upon the release of his Piano Portraits album
in January 2017, the YES keyboardist made
chart history, becoming the first solo piano
album to enter the UK’s Top 10, eventually
reaching number
6. Inspired by the
unprecedented public
reaction to his cover
of Bowie’s Life On
Mars on BBC Radio 2 a
year earlier, the album
features instrumental
versions of hits that Rick
was originally involved
with, such as Space
Oddity and Morning Has
Broken, as well as others which he chose for
their melodies, including Stairway To Heaven
and Help!.
The 2018 concerts will be based on a selection
of tracks from both Piano Odyssey and Piano
Portraits, showcasing music that has a special
connection with Rick’s own personal musical
Expect a night of beautiful piano
arrangements, interspersed with Wakeman’s
renowned comedy interludes.
Rachel Ducker catches up with Rick to hear all
about it...
R: Hello Rick how are you? I’ve been looking
forward to speaking with you!
Oh, you’re very brave [laughs]
R: So first I wondered how you
got into music?
It was all I ever did, really.
My parents had a concert party
before the Second World War and
just after the Second World War.
I was born in 1949, and by then
all the concert parties had folded
up. My dad was a great piano player, we had
a little semi house, and there was a piano in
the room downstairs. On Sundays all of my
relations used to come round to sing and play
in the evening.
Nobody really had a telly in those days. I was
three or four years old and I would climb out
29

of bed and sit at the bottom of the stairs
to listen to all of this music coming out
and I thought it was wonderful. So all I
ever wanted to do was to play music.
My dad sent me to piano lessons when
I was five and that was all I did. I went
through all the grades; I did a scholarship
and my dad encouraged me to listen to
many types of music, jazz bands, rock
bands, dance bands, pop bands and apart
football that was my life.
R: So what would you say to someone
who has just started to learn how to play
piano?
Always be true to yourself.
The first most important thing is to enjoy
it, if you don’t enjoy it, stop. I would say
that about anything because if you don’t
enjoy it, don’t do it, find something you
enjoy and then you will get much more
satisfaction out of it.
When you’re playing, you will get to know
quickly what sort of standard you can
reach. You don’t have to reach grade As,
or doctors standards, just standard you
know you’re comfortable with - and enjoy
yourself, if you can do that then other
people can enjoy listening. I always think
it’s good to set yourself targets, that
doesn’t do any harm.
Someone at a show last year asked me
“if you weren’t doing this right now what
would you be doing,” and I said “well, I will
be home playing.”
R: Well, that was actually one of my
questions! It’s nice to hear you have such
passion for music and that you would be
doing it, anyway?
Yeah, on my last school report
occasionally the headmaster would write
comments, I wish I still had it - I think my
mother destroyed it out of disgust. It said,
“Wakeman will either end up in one of
three places, Westminster, on stage at the
London Palladium, or Wormwood Scrubs
prison”.
I have done two out of three, [laughs] I
have been an advisor at Westminster, on
intellectual property rights, I’ve done the
London Palladium a few times, but not
made Wormwood Scrubs prison.
R: I think those two would be my
preference!
Yes, I have probably done the right two
out of the three!
R: People will know you from being
in the band ‘Yes’, I wondered how you
ended up being in the band?
Well, it’s still going, there’s two ‘Yes’s’ out
which is ridiculous, it’s a rather stupid
thing when bands get on, and there are
lots of different members you suddenly
have two bands the same name, it is
preposterous but there you go.
Jon Anderson, who was the original
founder and the singer, Jon and I worked
together with Trevor Rabin, who wrote
‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ and that kind
of thing. We’ve just come back from a big
tour of America and Japan, so we’re still
out going.
I joined them in 1971, three years after
they had formed, and have been in the
band, off and on, for about 18 years. ‘Yes’
has always been a tempestuous band, we
would always argue like crazy, but there’s
nothing wrong with that as it’s what
produces the music.
I do, I live just outside Diss.
There are not many jobs where you‘re on tour,
you wake up in the morning, you come down
to the hotel, you have breakfast together, then
you travel together, then you work together,
the only time you don’t see people is when
you go to bed! I don’t care how much you like
the people you work with if you had to do that
with them every day there would be certain
things that would niggle you!
I realised early on that it’s not music that
breaks people up it’s that you are living in each
other’s pockets. So now in the band we give
each other a lot of space, and that’s why it
works so well.
R: I guess you’ve got the balance right then?
Yeah, it’s all down to getting the balance right
and if you do that, then that’s fine.
R: So Bounce is an East Anglian publication
so all of our…
Yeah, we know your mag!
R: Ah that’s nice, so I wondered what’s your
favourite place to visit locally?
My favourite place? Oh gosh, there’s a load,
we are fond of the sea, so we do travel to the
coast quite a bit, Walberswick, Southwold,
Aldeburgh, and we love Covehithe!
R: It’s such a secret little haven!
Yeah, we love walking down to that lagoon; we
love going to the fens; we love RSPB Minsmere,
and we are members. I suppose that’s the joy
about this East coast - there are lots and lots
of options.
R: You’ve had the chance to work with the
likes of Elton John, David Bowie, Cilla Black,
Lou Reed, and Black Sabbath…
R: Someone once asked me “what is it about
this area you love?” and you’ve just described
it.
It was great! It doesn’t happen now, that
whole thing probably lasted about four or five
years, but it was what I call the proper days of
sessions. I was doing two a day or sometimes
three; I did over 2000 tracks with different
people, some were poor, some were fantastic!
I learnt from every one, it was a great
apprenticeship course; I was working with
some fantastic artists and also some fantastic
producers and engineers. After doing so
many sessions over those years, I knew all the
engineers, all the studios, all the producers
it was like a natural continuation, which was
great.
R: Now I believe you live somewhere on the
Norfolk/Suffolk boarder?
It was bound to happen with some of the new
road structures coming in, but there are lots of
houses going up, in some places they are doing
it really well and others bewilder me!
R: Yes!
As I am sure they do you! It’s a game that
my wife and I play when we drive along! I
understand that villages and towns have to
expand, but be careful how you do it! You’ve
got to think of how it will look like in the future.
When I was a kid, every place they built in
the 30s had to have a parade of shops, with
the essential shops. That’s what made it a
community. There is none of that now, so how
the hell can you have a community?
In the places it does exist, it’s getting eroded.
We lost our local post office, I mean, I was
furious; I was one of those with a placard on
the street!
The post office we had, we know, made a profit
and served the community.
Sometimes decisions are made that don’t look
to the future and that annoys me. But that’s
happening all over the country.
R: I know what you mean; we don’t even have
any banks around here anymore!
No, we don’t – the bank that I bank with has
gone.
The people, who sit in their offices in front
of computers and make these decisions,
have forgotten how important contact with
human people is, it’s nice to see somebody. Its
really important.
I am a big advocator of keeping village shops
open and when I find one goes, I get really
upset..
R: Now, onto your new show stopping by us
in Ipswich at Christmas, how does this differ
from the previous one?
It’s great because it’s just down the road from
me, it’s a fun concert – it’s a mixture of music,
some of mine, some with other people.
I’ve worked with such as David Bowie and Cat
Stephens, plus some music people wouldn’t
expect, and in-between all the pieces there are
ludicrous stories, which all have elements of
truth. Some as little as 1% and some have 99%
so it’s up to people to determine what they
think is truth or not. It’s a hilarious evening.
I haven’t played Ipswich for a little while now,
so it’s nice to have a show somewhere local.
R: I always like to ask a few readers to submit
questions… So the first is from our previous
cover stars Jesse Quin from Keane, he asked
- Sequential Circuits or Moog?
Moog.
R: Finally, from my good friend Brian Bush, “If
you were at the start now which band would
you be in and why”?
Blimey! [pauses] wow, gosh, that is a really
good question!
Gosh… I love doing piano things an
accompanying people, so I would have loved to
have worked with Amy Winehouse, it
would be great to strip everything back
and do something with just the piano.
With somebody like Adele would be great!
The piano is the most amazing framework for
a voice.
R: Well, thank you so much for your time.
No, you’re welcome!
R: You are my cover for November so I hope
you spot yourself in many places over Norfolk
and Suffolk!
That’s very kind, thanks Rachel I appreciate it!
R: Well, thank you so much for your time.
All the best for the show!
Yeah, if you come along do come and say hello!
R: i certainly will!
£29.50.
Dress Happy, Be Happy…Who Knew?
Have you noticed, when you are
feeling a bit low you reach for the
same old comfy clothing?
our mood too. So if you are feeling a bit low,
don’t reach for the baggy jumper and jeans, dig
out your favourite dress or outfit and notice the
difference you feel by doing so.
A study carried out by Professor Karen Pine
at the University of Herefordshire found what
a woman chooses to wear can be heavily
dependent on her emotional state. The study of
100 women revealed 50% would wear jeans when
feeling depressed, only one third said they would
wear jeans when feeling happy! 57% said they
would wear a baggy top when feeling depressed
and only 2% would wear one if feeling happy.
The study also revealed how we are more likely
to wear a favourite dress when happy compared
to when depressed, a huge 62% wore a favourite
dress when happy compared to only 6% when
depressed. Interestingly, the woman in the study
also felt they could alter their mood by changing
what they wore.
So What Does This Tell Us?
This study not only shows the influence clothing
can have on our mood, but also how it can alter
The same principal can be applied to all sorts
of scenarios, if you have an important meeting
coming up, or interview, wear something you
know will make you feel confident, because not
only will it boost your mood it will radiate how
good you feel to those around you.
Try it and see...
So in the mornings, especially now as summer
seems like a lifetime ago, dress how you want
to feel, rather than how you feel. Dig out that
favourite outfit when you are feeling a little low,
and remember we are all different, so if to you
jeans mean ‘happy’, go for it.
On another note, if you are finding that your low
moods need a bit more than just your favourite
outfit. Cognitive Hypnotherapy can be very
effective in helping you lift your mood, so you feel
like you again.
NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #73
COBRA
POSE
(boo-jang-GAHS-anna)
Benefits
Strengthens the spine
Stretches chest and lungs, shoulders, and
abdomen
Firms the buttocks
Stimulates abdominal organs
Helps relieve stress and fatigue
Opens the heart and lungs
Soothes sciatica
Therapeutic for asthma
Traditional texts say that Bhujangasana increases
body heat, destroys disease, and awakens
kundalini.
Cautions:
Back injury, Carpal tunnel syndrome,
Headache, Pregnancy.
How to try the pose:
1. Lie prone on the floor. Stretch your legs back,
tops of the feet on the floor. Spread your hands
on the floor under your shoulders. Hug the elbows
back into your body.
2. Press the tops of the feet and thighs and the
pubis firmly into the floor.
3. On an inhalation, begin to straighten the arms
to lift the chest off the floor, going only to the
height at which you can maintain a connection
through your pubis to your legs. Press the
tailbone toward the pubis and lift the pubis
toward the navel. Narrow the hip points. Firm but
don’t harden the buttocks.
4. Firm the shoulder blades against the back,
puffing the side ribs forward. Lift through the
top of the sternum but avoid pushing the front
ribs forward, which only hardens the lower back.
Distribute the backbend evenly throughout the
entire spine.
5. Hold the pose anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds,
breathing easily. Release back to the floor with an
exhalation.
Beginner’s Tip:
Don’t overdo the backbend. To find the height
at which you can work comfortably and avoid
straining your back, take your hands off the floor
for a moment, so that the height you find will be
through extension.
Partnering:
Once in the pose, have your partner straddle your
legs. He/she should bend over and grip the sides
of your pelvis, thumbs toward the sacrum, then
spread the back of your pelvis.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
Sick and tired of being in pain?
Realigning the Atlas is like getting
the foundations of a house laid
correctly... when the support
structure is in place, the rest of
the vertebrae are aligned and fully
functioning at their best.
This analogy will help to understand the process:
Fully qualified Harley Street Practitioner, visiting
Bury St Edmunds
“The Atlas is like the first link on a chain. If the
first link is twisted, the rest of the chain will be
twisted. If you undo it, the chain will straighten
up”.
Many years of clinical research have shown that
the first cervical vertebra (C1) or atlas, is more or
less malrotated from birth, in almost all humans.
Traumas such as whiplash, slips and falls, or any
sports injuries can push the atlas vertebra in an
even worth position, and therefore be the cause
of many health problems.
“I would definitely recommend this to anyone
who suffer back and shoulder pain, even sinus
problems. It has been over 3 months now pain
free and sinus unblocked” - T.B - London
The treatment for this misalignment is called
AtlasPROfilax® and is practised by Marie-
Agnes Casalini, Harley Street Practitioner,
visiting Suffolk, certified to the highest level
AtlasPROfilax®.
“After countless visits to an osteopath and a
chiropractor, with only minor and temporary
improvement to my stiff and twisted neck and
torso, I discovered MarieAtlas and had the
AtlasProfilax treatment. I could not have been in
better hands as Marie-Agnes is kind, gentle and
caring, though the treatment is uncomfortable,
it is bearable and doesn’t take long. My pelvis
straightened out almost immediately and
Tokay Wine from
Hungary
Tokay is situated in the north eastern area of Hungary.
It lies on volcanic slopes north of the Bodrog River close to the
border of Slovenia and 60 km from Russia.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
The town name is very long and complex so
the people label it as Tokaj or Tokay.
The Country is divided into 4 regions, the
Danube, The Small Plain, Transdanubia and
the Great Plain. Tokay lies in the foothills of
the Carpathian Mountains.
Climate and Soils...
The climate generally follows a continental
type with cold winters and hot summers.
There are some benefits where the vineyards
are close to rivers and in the autumn rains
are early sometimes leading to an extended
summer, allowing for a longer ripening period.
The soils in this north eastern most part of
the country are a mixture of clay and Volcanic
soils. There are additions of iron and lime in
parts.
The Wines...
A wine call Tokay Szamorodni, meaning
‘As it comes’ or no selection of the grapes,
the bunches can contain some grapes that
have suffered from Botrytis Cinerea and are
shrivelled up.
48

FOOD & DRINK
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 #73 | ISSUE | FOOD #73 & DRINK
The main grape used is the Furmint, but can
also use the Harslevelu.
A further category called Aszu Eszencia is 6
Puttonyi or more.
The most famous wine is the sweet wine
called ASZU with several grades.
Tokay ASZUs...
The alcohol content of these wines is typically
over 14%..
Tokay Eszencia...
The wine starts with grapes that have been
affected by Botrytis Cinerea, a fungus which
penetrates the skin of the grape allowing
water to escape but retaining the juice and
flavourings.
The grape shrivels up to resemble raisins.
They used to be crushed by their own
weight and put into containers
called Puttonyi being about 25
kilograms weight.
Nowadays they are simply
crushed into a sort of paste
like dough.
Wine is then poured onto the
paste and left for 24 to 48 hours,
with occasional stirring.
The wine is then racked off into wooden casks
and a slow fermentation allowed. Originally
the Aszu number was based on how many
Puttonyi were added to a Gonc cask (136
litres) of must.
Most common Aszu wines are labelled 3 to 6
Puttonyi.
One of the most exclusive wines in the world
but borders on being called wine as its sugar
content is typically between 500 to 700
grams of sugar per litre.
This is typically added to Aszu wines but can
be allowed to continue fermentation as at that
sugar level the yeast struggles to produce
alcohol. It is so sweet that it can be only
drunk in small quantities.
It maintains its quality and
drinkability for 200 years or so.
It is also said to have remarkable
curative properties assisting
longevity for men and women.
Some of the finest was said to have
been reserved for the Hapsburg Monarchy
and called Imperial Tokay. A bottle of this sold
in 2008 for £1,955.
Some believe that the best value Tokay Aszu
would be the Tokay Aszu 5 Puttonyos, which
would be shown on the label. It is an affordable
price and can give you extreme pleasure
experiencing one of the most famous and
outstanding sweet wines produced.
Conclusions...
Try it. It is wonderful or you can wait until another Tokay Imperial Tokay comes
along and bid for it.
THE SWAN
SOUTHWOLD
By Rachel Ducker
Southwold is one of the Suffolk
coast’s much-loved seaside
getaways.
Perched on the east coast of England, this
charming town welcomes visitors with its
own working lighthouse, a sandy beach and
not forgetting the ever so ‘modest’ beach
huts, including one that’s up for grabs for an
impressive £150,000.
After a multimillionpound
refurb, the
striking Georgian
facade of The Swan
Hotel remains a
highlight of the
town. Lovingly restored by the owners of the
Suffolk Brewery, Adnams, the hotel presides
over Southwold’s marketplace and is now
one of the most exciting places to stay in the
region.
With creative help from Shoreditch design
studio, Project Orange, the hotel has pitched
itself well beyond the ordinary.
The 35 bedrooms are divided into three
different categories: Outstanding, Excellent
and Fabulous.
They showcase a combination of
contemporary and industrial elements,
through sumptuous velvet sofas, appealing
“We arrive at reception slightly
early but with good reason”.
Who needs to eat out for lunch when you can
have your very own Adnams themed picnic
waiting for you? The traditional hamper is full
of fresh sandwiches, healthy salads, blueberry
tarts, sweet and savoury scones and chocolate
brownies… not forgetting the Adnams G&T’s in
a can, just to wash everything down with.
Admittedly, the weather isn’t good, but
regardless, we stroll on down to the
promenade under a large umbrella and take
shelter in one of the lollipop-coloured beach
huts. It’s quintessentially Suffolk.
Back at the hotel, my ‘outstanding’ bedroom
for the night is room number 15, as mentioned
it’s a dreary day but frankly, who cares when
you have a room like this. Views overlook the
hustle and bustle of the market; you can even
glimpse the North Sea.
The walls are stylishly painted in ‘Down Pipe’
from Farrow & Ball, with accents of lime
green, fuchsia pink and baby blue thrown in to
lift the mood.
My husband and I sit by the window watching
It’s getting darker and the rain now hammers
against the tall sash windows adorned
in neutral linen fabrics. Despite the dark
coloured walls it’s still warm and cosy – my
eyes fixate to the glow from the demijohn
glass lamps either side of the four-poster bed.
We prepare for dinner at The
Still Room. The restaurant is
another world away from the
crisp white tablecloths and
dark red walls it once wore.
It takes its name from
the small-batch distillery
situated just a few meters
away from the hotel which
has influenced the design
with features such as the
stunning copper-topped cocktail bar
showcasing their award-winning spirits.
The menu is a little nod to its coastal
surroundings, from scallop starters to fresh
fish dishes including seared Yellowfin Tuna
or Scorched Mackerel. More informal dishes,
like the Battered Monkfish and Triple Cooked
Chips, are available from the Tap Room menu
along with Adnams’ own beers and gin.
After dinner we retire to the
drawing room, a great area to
sit and contemplate. We sit by
the fireplace on impressive
emerald green velvet sofas;
surrounded by bold blue and
We head back up to room 15,
The Swan has always been beloved by
Would you like to know a secret? I am one
of those locals. So surely that makes me the
I spent most weekends of my childhood
waltzing around the amusement arcade,
still found at the pier, armed with a Mr Whippy,
gambling away 2p coins my grandparents had
But whether you are a local or visitor, there is
always something nostalgic about a return to
Keeping it Real!
BECCLES BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS TO PUBLIC HALL
Now in its 7 th year, the Beccles Beer
Festival has become one of the most
popular events in Beccles calendar and a
celebration of local real ales, ciders and
craft lager...
Last year more than 1500 people visited
the 3 day beer festival, drinking over
5,000 pints from 26 different breweries
and 4 cider makers, all in Norfolk and
Suffolk. This year there will be 30
different ales including a good selection
of gluten-free and vegan.
Organisers Graham Elliott and Beccles
Lido Director, Shaun Crowley, told Bounce
Magazine “This is the biggest beer festival
in the region and real ale enthusiasts
travel from all over East Anglia. It’s not
just a celebration of local ales - it’s held
in Beccles Public Hall to raise funds for
Beccles Lido, and run by volunteers –
so it also celebrates these 2 fantastic
community run Beccles attractions!”
From Friday-Sunday 16-18 November, the 7 th Beccles Beer
Festival will feature some very special new ales not widely
available on draft anywhere else, as well as festival stalwart Green
Jack Ripper!
As in previous years there will be live music on Friday and Saturday
night, with local festival favorites Owl & Wolves (to be confirmed)
on Friday with their old school blues and skiffle; and Baku & Beyond
playing popular classic covers on Saturday night. Sunday is a more
relaxed day and families with well behaved children are welcome.
As usual, the Public Hall will also have a fully licensed bar selling
wines, spirits and soft drinks for the non-ale drinkers; and there will
be a good selection of hot and cold snacks to complement the beer,
served by Lido volunteers.
So make this a weekend to get over to Beccles – and why not use
Oakfired...
JOINS UNESCO’S INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE...
A Suffolk-based eatery has
become only the third restaurant
in the UK to have achieved a
prestigious international quality
standard and officially become
part of what UNESCO has deemed
“intangible cultural heritage”.
Oakfired at The Royal Oak
in Beccles, owned by Paul
Williams and Paul Jackson,
has just been awarded hardto-attain
accreditation from
the Associazione Vera Pizza
Napoletana (AVPN), based in the
southern Italian city of Naples,
which allows it to legally claim
to be able to offer its diners ‘real
Neapolitan pizza.’
Its pizza maker, Paul Jackson, is
not just now a ‘pizzaiolo’ (pizza
chef), recognised as being able
to prepare and cook pizza in the
authentic manner required by
the stringent AVPN, but has also
become part of the patrimony
of Neapolitan pizza and a
community of pizzaioli who pass
on the tradition of Neapolitan
pizza-making from generation to
generation.
Oakfired at The Royal Oak now
joins the two other UK restaurants
with the AVPN accreditation –
Casa Mia in Herne Bay, Kent and
Cal’s Own in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
It becomes the only restaurant in
its region of East Anglia that can
allow food lovers to experience
the type of pizza they would be
treated to in the Italian city that
gave birth to the dish.
72
Having already scooped an
industry-leading award in 2017,
when it won the Pizza and Pasta
Association’s Gold Award for Best
UK Independent Pizzeria in its
region, the Oakfired team wish
to go one further with a national
award this year.
They hope their dedication to a
UNESCO-recognised art will enable
them to do that and that East
Anglia’s restaurant scene will have
even more to shout about.
More information is available at
www.oakfired.co.uk and Oakfired
can be found at 35 Ravensmere,
Beccles, by those wanting to
take advantage of what happens
in Naples now being on offer in
Suffolk.

“Unarguably one of the finest
singer-songwriters of her
generation” - Sunday Times Culture
Since releasing her debut as a teenager
nearly 20 years ago, the Oxfordshireraised,
Cheshire-based singer and
songwriter Thea Gilmore has
gained global acclaim for
making music not only of
extraordinary beauty, but of
rare honesty and insight.
In 2009 Thea released
‘Strange Communion’ an
immediately acclaimed collection
of seasonal songs ranging from joyful
to meditative, from introspective to darkly
humorous. The album contained ‘That’ll Be
Christmas’ which became the most played
festive song on BBC Radio 2 that year and
was described by Chris Evans as “the best
Christmas song in years”.
Her 2018 acoustic Christmas Party UK tour will
laced liberally with the occasional diverse,
highly individual versions of a Christmas
classic. Enjoy the superb musicianship always
A Little Effort
GOES A LONG WAY
Well we’ve all heard that one
before haven’t we? But do we use
it to our full advantage?
BY RUBY REED
I think its safe to say
we probably don’t
exercise this daily,
or think about the
potential difference
to be made...
remembering details about someone. For example, a
conversation you have with them.
We all chat away but how often does it go in one ear
and out the other. I can be very guilty of this. But,
when I have made a conscious effort to retain a few
points of interest- and I remember to ask how the
trip to the vets went, it’s well received.
Because I’ve actually
discovered it’s a pretty good
rule to live by.
I have a few life hacks I like
to stick to at the best of
times and this one is certainly
proving its weight.
A simple one for this is
Showing genuine interest in someone will
significantly develop relationships that will aid in
everyday life.
That extra moment spent caring could turn out to be
well worth your time.
Think about it the other way around. Somebody
asks what you did at the weekend, even though you
spoke previously about what you were going to be
88

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #73 | #73 LIFESTYLE
up to. Someone else asks
how the birthday party
you planned to go to at
the weekend was, clearly
remembering what you
had told them before.
Who do you feel more
valued by?
It’s nice when someone
remembers things about
you and shows an interest,
it makes us want to return
the favour.
Talking of which - Favours
are actually really easy.
Painfully so. One of my
other life rules to live by
(or at least try to most of
the time) happens to be
‘It’s the little things’.
Seriously, why not stay five more minutes
to help out a colleague with something
they are struggling with? Don’t be
surprised when they return the favour.
And hey what about bringing two
muffins back from the shop?
The bottom line here is that something
very small can make an impact. Making
someone’s day isn’t hard and then we get
to feel happy about it too. It’s a win, win.
One good deed a day they say!
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 | #73 ISSUE | #73 HISTORY
Thetford
Warren Lodge...
The Prior of Our Lady’s
Priory through Royal
approval had the lodge
built in the 1400s by
the monks from the
nearby Cluniac priory
who looked after the
Westwick rabbit warren
to hunt small game and
to protect his livelihood
to stop poachers.
The Prior had the area built
big enough so that he could
have hunting parties and he
also employed the services
of a warrener to protect the
rabbit who would be sold for
their meat and fur. Rabbits
were introduced to the area by
the Normans and became very
valuable. In those days’ rabbits
were farmed in the way that
sheep are today.
This rectangular building was
built from mortared flint rubble
and stones that were reddened
were removed after a fire. The
walls were over a metre thick
and included reused fragments
from the 12th century. At the
time, a parapet was built for
which the gamekeeper would
have looked out at what would
have been an open country.
The porch had a single hole
for which the warrener would
lower a board from the floor
above to keep the door closed
from those not welcome.
The warrener would have
resided on the second floor of
the lodge and the first floor
would have had a storeroom
which would have housed
traps and nets along with racks
to dry the skins and to hang
salted meats.
With many medieval buildings
come ghost stories which
is perfect for the Halloween
period. Even today sightings
of a very large ghostly white
rabbit eyes so red it would
blind those looking guards the
doorway to Warren Lodge.
A neighbouring building which
was the Leper Hospital of St
Margaret saw its sufferers
kept within was in 1304
ransacked and had silver and
other valuables stolen before
being set on fire. To this day a
figure so horrific can be seen
terrifying those it encounters
close to Warren Lodge and
from the first floor of the
building. It was reported in 2011
that a man was seen looking
out from the second-floor
window with horrific black
holes in his face where his eyes
and mouth would have been.
After the dissolution of
Thetford Priory, the lands
were given to the Duke of
Norfolk and it became a
successful productive warren
in the Breckland area. It’s most
famous owner in the 19th
century on a 99-year lease was
the Maharajah Duleep Sing who
was an Indian price exiled to
Winter IS COMING...
Adapting to your skin care needs...
My boyfriend has left for a six-month tour
in a cold place, so I am thinking of things to
send him; including skin care.
As winter is well on its way here in England,
now is the time to focus on keeping your
skin in great condition ready for the cold
breezes and fretting wind burn.
One of the best skin care
ranges, for men, is the
award-winning Bulldog.
With simple packaging and
a masculine name, men will
feel more at ease using it.
From moisturisers to face
washes, serums and aftershave
balms, they have a good assortment of
products including original, oil control,
sensitive and age defence. Prices are
affordable and easy to find on the high
street, a great buy for men.
Lips are often the first thing to go dry, the
best lip product I have ever used is Clarins
Hydra Essential. Hydrating your lips whilst
penetrating under the top layer to reveal
soft, smooth and comfortable lips.
Mornings can be rough on your skin, so
why not give ‘This Works® Stress Cheeks
Face Mask’ a go? Easy and quick to apply
first thing in the morning, its properties
will leave your skin hydrated, revived,
smooth and radiant, plus with its
aromatherapeutic blends it helps
to relieve mental and physical
stress and tension.
As I always say my number one
tip good skin care! Adapting to
your skin care needs is so important
all year round.
The key to flawless skin...
Are you suffering with unusual breakouts in your
skin? A sudden eruption of acne or eczema out of
the blue?
This may not be a coincidence. Our skin is the
largest organ in the body and it’s actually pretty
vocal. It changes colour when we’re too hot or
cold, it can stretch and change with us and in
some cases we may experience rashes, spots or
skin conditions such as Rosacea, Eczema and
Psoriasis. There are many things that influence
the way our skin reacts, here are a few to consider
when you next experience an unwanted breakout.
1. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate
Many think it is a myth but drinking the correct
amount of water will improve your skin tone. Being
hydrated is a major factor in the way our bodies
function. The body is made of around 60% water
and keeping our levels up is incredibly important
for both brain and organ function as well as skin
condition. Water helps to clear the toxins from
your body which in turn will help reduce breakouts.
2. Sleep
On average adults require 7-9 hours sleep per
night, not getting enough sleep can negatively
affect your body. It reduces the moisture levels
in your skin and can lower your pH levels, making
your skin’s complexion look tired and less youthful.
Your body works hard while you sleep to boosts
blood flow to the skin, so that you wake up with a
healthy glow.
3. Allergies
7. Bed Sheets
Many people assume that allergies are mainly associated
with food however intolerances should also be considered
in the things you put on your skin as the ingredients
may still have an effect on your body. Remember that
everything you put on your skin is absorbed, although it’s
at a much lower level than ingesting these ingredients they
should not be overlooked. For example, if you’re allergic to
nuts it’s recommended you avoid skincare which includes
nuts or nut oils.
4. Pregnancy
It’s important to remember that your body may be
hypersensitive throughout your pregnancy and there are
certain things to avoid such as essential oils as these are
highly concentrated. Your body is experiencing many
changes and your skin may change dramatically, don’t be
alarmed this is normal. Even when you’re not pregnant
women experience hormonal changes on a regular basis
which can influence your skin’s condition, especially on
your face. You may find that you need to adjust your
skincare routine to suit these changes.
I know this may seem an unusual one but
be sure to change your bed sheets regularly
as the sheets can harbour bacteria from
dead skin cells and perspiration especially
as you’re in bed for a number of hours
everyday.
Tips
A great way to detox your skin for a fresh
look is with a mask, for face or body it will
cleanse your pores and draw out any toxins
built up while it nourishes your skin, filling
it with much needed nutrients. Every mask
is different so choose one that’s right for
your skin.
Need advice?
Contact us on info@funkyskincare.com and
we will be happy to offer you advice and
recommendations of which products are
right for you. Written by Sarah Gare.
5. Diet
I don’t mean go on a diet but assess what you eat, as it
may be that you have an intolerance to certain ingredients
which your body struggles to process and therefore may
cause you to experience breakouts. Begin to cut out certain
foods and see if you notice a difference. Even eating too
much processed foods can have an effect on your skin, get
back to basics with a good healthy diet and your skin will
thank you for it. Be sure not to forget alcohol too as this
will tend to dry out your skin, the last thing you need the
morning after!
6. Skincare Routine
A good skincare routine will help to keep your skin looking
flawless. It doesn’t need to be complicated, make your
routine suit your lifestyle. If there were two essentials I
would recommend a cleanser or face wash and a good
moisturiser.
If your skin is cleansed and moisturised regularly this will
significantly reduce breakouts, this includes removing your
make-up every night as your skin needs to breathe.
WINTER IS ON IT’S WAY
BY KATE LINES
Kate’s Top Tip : Rake fallen leaves - Fallen
leaves prevent light and air getting to plants -
clean them up!
Leaves are falling rapidly, and
wind and rain are on the increase.
Tender plants (such as bananas)
will need protecting from frost,
gales and freezing rains.
Tidy up borders
Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty
remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover
of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly
(sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). Continue
collecting and storing seed from perennials still
forming seed heads. Bring inside any tender
perennials, such as Fuchsia, Gazania, Lantana and
Abutilon, before frosts cause damage.
The Greenhouse
Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean,
mend and oil your tools and throw away anything
that is beyond hope or reasonable repair!
Drain and lag...
Save yourself untold irritation and expense by
draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps,
irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of
sudden hard frosts.
HOME & GARDEN
NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #73
Top jobs this month:
6. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are
a problem
1. Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns,
ponds and beds
7. Insulate outdoor containers from frost -
bubble wrap works well
2. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent
waterlogging
8. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees
using grease bands around the trunks
3. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year
9. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds
into the garden
4. Prune roses to prevent wind-rock
5. Plant out winter bedding
10. Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is
allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for
composting
BATTLEFIELD LIVE!
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Always wanted to give paintball
a go but you’re worried that it
might hurt nor do you want to
get covered in paint? Well I have
the perfect answer for you…
BATTLEFIELD LIVE!
Battlefield Live is an exhilarating, team-oriented
combat game that perfectly bridges the gap
between the sometimes intimidating paintball and
the somewhat tame laser tag.
Battlefield Live East Anglia have three locations:
Ipswich (Jimmy’s Farm), Thetford (High Lodge
Forest Centre) and Thorney near Peterborough
each with their own unique and ideal theatre
for warfare. You can play all year round, in all
conditions (even snow) and all of the equipment
(gun, overalls, face paint) is provided on site.
Your two hour gaming session will comprise of
approximately seven games lasting for an average
of 10 minutes each, the fun factor ensures those two
hours fly by in no time at all!
You’ll also get great value for money, which is already
a snip at just £17.50 per person, in paintball it can be
quite frustrating to be shot early and forced to watch
the action from the casualty bench.
At Battlefield Live, with thanks to the Medic Box, your
multiple headshots are mere flesh wounds, which are
easily healed allowing to you promptly return to the
frontline.
The other significant difference is the gun, your
scorpion sub machine gun has a red dot sight and it’s
invisible infra-red light can accurately hit a target 100
metres away.
The 30 round clip will automatically reload within
a few seconds once empty, therefore no fumbling
114

NOVEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #73
SPORT
around in a ditch with a pot a paint balls which are
also expensive for the trigger happy amongst you.
The gun will also let you know when you’ve
successfully shot an opponent and also when you’ve
been hit with some life-like sound effects.
The games will differ in terms of their rules and goals
from the simple shoot the other team as many times
as possible “Team Deathmatch” to the intense “VIP
rescue” where you must escort a member of your
team to a designated safe zone or the fun “Aliens vs
Zombies”.
The variation ensures it’s not at all monotonous
and specific objectives really add to the battlefield
scenario and atmosphere, it’s impossible not to get
completely taken in.
Battlefield Live is great for all ages, from 8 to 88!
I went to the Jimmy’s Farm site with Action Boy
and Action Father-in-Law (retired) we all enjoyed it
equally.
Our session also had a birthday party of 10 year olds
and a party of 30 year olds but on the field of battle
age was just a number and the entire group had great
fun in the wooded surroundings, ideal for warfare.
Of course Action Man’s team won!
LOOME
MUSIC
Loome, a brand-new electronic
releases debut single, Capricorn.
One who has been playing and
refining his art and craft for more than
half of his life.
His new album LOOME, is full of
ambient spinning reverbs and sounds
from space, laid atop pop choruses
and grounded lyrics. LOOME brings
you their self-made genre, Ambient-
Lux.
With the launch of the debut single
CAPRICORN, LOOME have already
transported their listeners somewhere
between a futuristic love affair and the
nostalgia of childhood imagination.
This is project headed up by Tomas
Frankson, who is also the founder
of TF Music School in Bury St
Edmunds. Whatever you want to learn,
Tomas can prepare you with a solid
Archie’s
Adventures
WHILE MUM’S AWAY...
I haven’t been too happy this month;
my mum has been going away a lot
on business.
As I have been her shadow since I was 10 weeks
old, I can’t help but to sulk with her when she
leaves me. She is silly too right? – uff!
The upside is I get to spend some quality lad’s
time with my dad. So for those ‘doggie dads’ out
there who may need a few tips on keeping us
entertained, here’s a few to help you along
the way!
Go on a walking tour of your town…
Keep your four-legged friend in familiar
territories; you might even enjoy the walk
yourself.
Go shopping together in a pet-friendly store…
We love treats, especially ones we can rip apart!
Take our minds of missing mum by spoiling us!
Make a doggie playdate with a friend’s dog...
If I am missing mum, guaranteed you will be too,
the company will be good for us both.
Teach your dog a new trick...
What a great challenge for us both, plus, it will
really impress mum when she comes home.
Eat at a dog-friendly restaurant...
We make great friends, this way you can eat out
and have company too.
Me and dad both survived, and gave mum a
welcome home party when she returned. I can
say with confidence we both made it into the
good books, so take a leaf out of ours!
Follow me on Insta @official_archies_
adventures. You can also keep up to date with
my antics on Twitter @bouncearchie.
Curl up together for an afternoon nap…
I am sure we wont have to tell you twice about
this one, a film, TV show or sports, we don’t care
as long as we get to nap too!
Go to the beach and splash in the sea…
My favourite place in the world, the beach
is a place to have plenty of fun, perfect
for a distraction!
