Prologue
We continuously broaden our horizon for a better environment
The soil is deteriorating and raw materials and energy sources within our earth are being depleted.
Developments that have been going on for decades. Together, we are responsible for this happening,
but together, we can also achieve the turnaround. A new approach is necessary, because we have the
responsibility to leave the next generation with a vibrant planet.
We, as a service-oriented family business…
work on contributing a little bit to achieving
a better environment every day. By
producing and delivering organic Fertilizers,
soil improvers, and BioBased products to 70
countries, we combat the deterioration of
the soil and exhaustion of energy sources.
This has demonstrably led to 10% more
food production in the areas where our
products have been applied. In addition,
the application of biofuels, only produced
based on residual flows, has achieved a CO 2
reduction of 8%. These are great results, but
on a global scale, they are of very limited
value. In order to increase that value, we
will invest heavily in the production and
delivery of organic Fertilizers, soil improvers,
and BioBased products in the coming
years. Not only because we believe in our
sustainable products, but because we
have the responsibility as a company to
contribute to a better living environment.
We, as a service-oriented family business…
are working on building and expanding our
horizon. Within infrastructure, a transition
from the current contractual forms to the
new BVP contracts and expansion of the
UAV-gc works is currently taking place.
With pride, a strong team works on realising
the growth we see before us as board and
drs. J.J.P. (Jochem) Langenhuijzen RC
family every day. Traditionally, we are
CEO
entrepreneurs in heart and soul, and we
want to link this to the new market segment. We want to serve this segment with our specialisations, such as concrete roads,
archaeology, and UXO Clearance.
From 20 to 200 colleagues
”Since 1 April 1987, I have been working for (at the time)
M. den Ouden & Zn. I started as a driver of a mini digger,
later became a truck driver, and in between, I helped with
all kinds of activities in wage and ground work. In 1996,
Frans den Ouden asked me to help him with the planning
for people, equipment, and transport. Shortly after, FERM O
FEED in Zeeland was acquired, and five months after that,
Promest in Helmond. In recent years, I have been taking
care of equipment management and planning the people for
Infrastructure. As long as I have been working in the office,
I have not given up my old profession; I regularly drive the
truck on Saturdays.
Over the course of 30 years, I have seen the company
grow from a mere 20 to over 200 employees. Sometimes
gradually, often a bit faster. I have been given and have
taken many opportunities. DEN OUDEN GROEP is a flatlevel
organisation, with short lines, and rapid action. I truly
enjoy working here and hope to be able to contribute to this
dynamic company for many more years.”
1. Who are we?
The third generation
The third generation consists of the following eight persons:
‘I have been working in the family business since March
1992. At the moment I am a working Team Leader
on the shovel/crane at a Groenrecycling location. I
am also part of the innovation team and help with
analysing and developing final products from the
DEN OUDEN GROENRECYCLING. I have been doing
this with lots of passion, dedication, and pleasure for
25 years. I am also very proud of the family business. It’s
one big family with a strongly driven, pleasant, and healthy
culture where we work on beautiful projects with a good
heart on a daily basis. At DEN OUDEN GROEP, the customer
comes first. We are service-oriented and a deal is a deal.
We are very flexible and always think toward a suitable
solution. We work on innovative products and projects and
try to stay one step ahead as a company for now and for
the future.’
M.A.G. (Marcel) den Ouden
(date of birth 05-07-1974)
‘I have been working in the family business since April 1999
and I am the commercial director at the moment. I am
also responsible for the sale of organic Fertilizers which we
produce ourselves in our factory at FERM O FEED in
Helmond. When I see the spirit and ambition of the people
working for us,it makes me very proud. It is often because
our people take that extra step or show that extra effort that
we can make the difference in a sometimes difficult market.
I also find it wonderful to see how users of our organic
Fertilizers on the other side of the world are happy with
the product we make and get great results with them. In
addition, as DEN OUDEN GROEP, we want to keep thinking
about the development of sustainable solutions for the
future, to make and keep our world liveable for the next
generations.’
R.M.H.F. (Rob) den Ouden
(date of birth 31-10-1975)
‘In January 2010, I started working in our family business
as a project leader for Design & Construct and I am
currently responsible for Marketing & Communication.
I consider it a very nice challenge to position the various
business components in the market professionally and
representatively. For instance, we annually participate in
approximately 15 (inter)national trade fairs and spend a lot
of attention to the appearance of our equipment and the
location. I am very proud that I can now pour my dedication
and creativity into our family business, and I hope that
you, as a (potential) customer, also feel the passion of this
beautiful Brabant family business, so that you can grow
with us.’
J.W.M. (Jurgen) den Ouden
(date of birth 10-07-1976)
‘I have been working in our family business since 1994 and I
was named after the founder of our company, Grandpa Tein.
I am currently mainly working at our location ‘De Peel’ in
Helmond. It is a versatile location where FERM O FEED,
DEN OUDEN ROC, and Groenrecycling are located. I work
for Groenrecycling there and we also process bark and waste
wood here. We also produce our roof garden substrates here.
My grandpa started in 1948 and at a certain moment, my
father and his brothers took over. Many things changed,
the company grew quickly. All of us are proud of that!
Now it is our turn, the third generation. We will do everything
in our power to keep developing our company, so that it
can continue to grow in a healthy way.’
1. Who are we?
‘I have been working in our family business since 2004 and
my current position is Operational Director.
This position reflects all my activities and I am ultimately
responsible for all operational matters that are present
within our fantastic family business. I am proud to be
working within our company and I am also proud of the
involvement of all family members, our employees, and our
permanent partners – it feels like one big team effort! We
are entrepreneurs in heart and soul and we have the right
solution for any issue!’
‘I have been working in our family business since April 2001
and my job is all-round employee.
I substitute at DEN OUDEN GROENRECYCLING and transport.
The great thing about a family business is working
together with your cousins in a growing and broad business.
Always strive for the best for your customers and the
company, and work with pleasure.’
(date of birth 22-07-1979)
‘In the winter of 2014, I started working in our family
business as a salesperson for biomass products and grew
into the Sales Manager of DEN OUDEN GROENRECYCLING.
Since a few months ago, another new chapter has started for
me, BODAC, where I have become the operational director.
I also have the task of achieving more synergy and process
optimisations within the entire business unit. A fun and
challenging job where I can further develop myself. This
has led me to get to know a lot of employees in recent
years, where I especially notice that everyone works for
our company with genuine passion and experience. It is
beautiful to see this, and it makes me and the rest of the
family very proud. Together, we work on the progress and
prosperity of our company, in order to eventually pass it on
to the fourth generation.’
‘I have been working in the family business since August
2016. I am working for FERM O FEED as a sales support/
back-office employee. I am proud of the company, it is
special how it grew into what it is today. My grandpa
started with something small and eventually, my father and
his brothers built on that. The great thing about this family
business is that the various business units all share the
same goal, namely ensuring a greener and better liveable
environment together. Nature and the soil are central to
this. We work on this together full of passion and pleasure
every day.’
1.7 Performance Ladder Social
Entrepreneurship (PSO)
DEN OUDEN GROEP meets the requirements for Level 3
on the PSO Performance Ladder. The Performance Ladder
Social Entrepreneurship (PSO) quality label demonstrates
that DEN OUDEN GROEP not only supports people with a
vulnerable labour market position in its work, but also offers
them a place within our own business.
Companies with a level 3 recognition are among the leading
companies in the field of social entrepreneurship and meet
the qualitative requirements relating to appropriate work,
integration, functioning & development, and guidance. DEN
OUDEN GROEP considers social entrepreneurship to be selfevident:
people with a distance to the labour market work
with us on the work floor.
1.8 CO 2 performance ladder
DEN OUDEN GROEP is certified at Level 5 of the CO 2
performance ladder. The objective is to reduce energy
consumption over a period of five years, which will reduce
CO 2 emissions by 10% calculated from the base year 2015.
To achieve this objective, initiatives by the management,
but certainly also by the employees of DEN OUDEN GROEP
will need to be investigated and applied where possible.
This means we not only do this in our business, but also in
our projects. In our policy, we pay attention to how we can
develop sustainably on the one hand (energy and materials)
and achieve reduction on the other hand (energy, CO 2
emissions, and waste).
1. Who are we?
1.9 Circular Biobased Economy
The soil is deteriorating and fossil fuels
and energy sources will be exhausted in
the short term. We are all responsible for
this happening, but together, we can also
achieve the turnaround. A new approach
is necessary, because we have the
responsibility to leave the next generation
with a vibrant planet. In order to increase
our value in this effort, we will invest
heavily in the production and delivery of
Biobased products in the coming years.
These BioBased products come from and
return to Mother Earth and fit the image of
the circular economy perfectly.
We develop and introduce Biobased
products to realise a more sustainable
society. For instance, the residual flows
come from the region and the production
takes place within the region as much as
possible.
For more information about our BioBased
products, see the Bio(Based) raw materials
chapter.
Taxol
One of the latest developments in which
DEN OUDEN GROEP is closely involved is
the biorefinery of taxus in order to obtain
Taxol. Taxol is a valuable raw material for
the pharmaceutical industry and is applied
as an ingredient in cancer medicine. An
intensive cooperation with Taxustaxi
has been in place for some time. At our
locations, there is free taxus collection for
cancer control.
1. Who are we?
1.10 Corporate Social Responibility (CSR)
We distinguish ourselves with CSR because we are socially committed to our staff, but also to the people in the area. Our
employees are our capital and our environment is our right to exist. We work on a better world, day after day:
✔
✔
Processing (organic) residual flows into high-quality products, such as biofuels and soil improvers.
Remediating contaminated land and water soil.
✔ Economically handling energy and raw materials, annual CO 2 reduction of 2%.
If someone may end up in the Sickness Benefits Act (for a longer period), appropriate work is found.
✔
✔
We always try to relocate people within the company when someone is not in the right place.
✔ CO 2 awareness certificate; we contribute to a more sustainable world because we reduce as much of
our CO 2 emissions as possible.
✔
✔
✔
NTA 8080 certificate; we show that we produce, process, trade, and use biomass for energy
generation in a sustainable way.
All electricity we consume is produced based on Dutch Biomass.
Combating deterioration of the soil by delivering and advising in the field of soil improvers and organic fertilizers.
2. What do we offer?
2.1 Infrastructure
For clients, DEN OUDEN GROEP is a solution-oriented and pragmatic party in the entire infrastructure
process. And because everything is covered by us, we never point to other parties. Our goal is to be a
transparent, reliable, and innovative partner for infrastructure projects.
Our infrastructure activities mainly focus on:
• Urban refurbishment
• Concrete roads
• Soil remediation
2.1.1 Urban refurbishment
Redeveloping existing urban areas is a complex task that is also becoming increasingly challenging due to new issues such
as climate change (adapting sewage and drainage, water storage) and the new technologies that need to be placed in the
ground (thermal storage, heat net, domestic and extinguishing water, telecommunications, etc.)
DEN OUDEN GROEP is able to combine various disciplines needed to create and apply efficient and economical systems.
We take care of planning, safety, flow, and communication when it comes to refurbishment projects.
The ‘Roundabout of Tomorrow’ is so unique because it is
the first cradle-to-cradle roundabout in the Netherlands,
and possibly in the entire world. But what is so unique
about this roundabout, what makes it so sustainable
and reusable? Firstly, we have moved away from asphalt
as the hardening structure of the roundabout and used
concrete. Concrete has a longer lifespan and requires
little maintenance. The type of concrete used by DEN
OUDEN GROEP has very low CO 2 emissions, namely
about 70% less than normal. Thirty years from now, it
is possible to remove each component separately and
reuse it. This makes the roundabout cradle-to-cradle.
Not just the roundabout is unique, but the form of
cooperation was a bit different than usual as well. From
the very beginning, DEN OUDEN GROEP, the municipality
of Venlo, and Kragten were in open conversation with
each other and with suppliers, subcontractors, Zuyd
Hoogeschool, public utilities, and residents. The physical
activities commenced on 6 June 2017, and the roundabout
was ready for use at the end of August 2017.
The construction of the new public space ‘Ligne’
(30,000 m 2 ) has the goal of realising a new multifunctional
area. The work consisted of a large number of sustainable
applications. The challenging work included the
redevelopment of hardenings, sewage work, removing
concrete cylinders, applying quay walls, applying bridges,
drainage work, archaeological research, applying green
facilities, applying street furniture, and applying a bypass
for the Keutelbeek with a flow rate of 35 m³/sec!
This was the most complex and biggest project of
DEN OUDEN GROEP to date. Many parties have had a
hand in the work, such as the architect, water authority,
and the municipality of Sittard itself.
But the most important thing is… the client is very
satisfied!
Implementation period: 2016-2017
The work is located in Loon op Zand and stretches across
a length of approximately 2,600 metres. The objective is
to improve the accessibility of the core of Loon op Zand,
create a better and safer traffic flow, and give the public
space a quality impulse. The core of Loon op Zand is
not sustainable and future-proof. The maximum speed
has been dropped from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. Through
adjustments of the roads, paving stones, and green, the
appearance of the street is also improved. The core of Loon
op Zand is cleaner and safer because there is less traffic
and people drive slower.
The work is located in Frederiklaan, Jonghlaan, and
Essenstraat in the municipality of Eindhoven. The
Frederiklaan Sewer Replacement project has been
implemented in nine phases. Two of these phases were
carried out in Frederiklaan in front of the Philips Stadium.
To minimise the inconvenience for the activities in the
Stadium, the municipality wanted to optimally use the
activity-free period in the summer. This was done by
implementing as much of the first phase as possible in the
period between the concerts of Guus Meeuwis and PSV’s
first football match. This way, the work caused as little
inconvenience to visitors as possible.
2. What do we offer?
2.1.2 Concrete roads
Hardenings are increasingly being made of concrete. Concrete is very resistant to heavy and intense traffic loads and
remains excellently driveable. The occurrence of track and ripple formation is minimal. Concrete has a long lifespan and is
both recyclable and maintenance-friendly.
Turning heavy traffic often leads to collapse of the hardening. This can be avoided with a concrete hardening. A concrete
hardening is a ‘rigid’ and stable construction that can stand the test of time and heavy traffic without being damaged.
Damage due to weather influences is negligible. Concrete also has an environmentally friendly character. The growth of
weeds is minimal, which means pesticides are not necessary. We are able to take care of all concrete work with our own
equipment. This enables us to guarantee quality and save costs.
We will continue to actively innovate, including with concrete roads. DEN OUDEN GROEP wants to utilise a raw material
such as grass even better by using the fibres and proteins in different ways, e.g. as a mixture for concrete production. This
makes the raw material more valuable within the chain and allows it to be applied within the manufacturing industry.
BAM Ireland
Implementation period: 2017
For the purpose of an Apron (airplane platform) renovation
at Dublin Airport, DEN OUDEN GROEP has applied
10,000 m² of high-quality concrete hardening. The work
was completed to the full satisfaction of BAM Ireland and
Dublin Airport Authority.
The structure consists of a non-reinforced concrete floor
with a thickness of 425 mm and a concrete quality of
C35/45 XF4 with the addition of 5% air. The joint pattern
on the platform is based on 5.5 by 5.5 metres whereby
the longitudinal joints are linked by a coupling rod with a
diameter of 20 mm centre-to-centre 600 mm. The cross
joints feature dowels with a diameter of 40 mm centre-tocentre
375 mm. The concrete mortar was delivered from
a central location and the concrete hardening was applied
with our Wirtgen SP850 Vario slipform paver modified to
a width of 5.5 metres.
Implementation period: 2015-2017
A new aircraft testing facility for military planes has been
constructed at the air base in Eindhoven. In addition to
an open air concrete platform, this testing facility also
has a high-walled platform. At this new location, the air
force can test the C-130 Hercules and KDC-10 planes,
for instance after servicing or repairs. According to the
Ministry of Defence, this walled test site will cause less
hindrance than the current one.
The construction had two phases. During the first phase
(2015/2016), taxiways and the plateau were constructed,
plus a twelve metre high sound wall north of the plateau.
During the second phase (2017), the walled plateau was
built. The work mainly consisted of applying a testing
facility with a slanted wall (embankment with concrete
slabs). This slanted wall is intended to direct the ‘blast’
generated by the jet engines during test runs upward. The
hardenings mainly consist of 18,000 m² cement concrete
hardenings (incl. 7.5 km of joints) and prefab concrete
slabs.
The work was carried out as a contracting consortium
with Dura Vermeer.
Implementation period: 2016
Outside our national borders, in the South-England port
of Southampton, construction company Van de Ven
realised a distribution centre for supermarket chain Lidl.
DEN OUDEN GROEP provided 40,000 m² of concrete road
construction consisting of a ring road, a loading dock,
and parking spaces. It is one of our specialisations. The
challenge with this project was mostly in the lead time,
namely in terms of the production speed of the concrete
mortar. In England, the capacity of concrete plants is lower
than in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, we are more
focused on efficiency and shorter construction times,
and we have younger plants with larger capacities. In the
Netherlands, we would work with a width of 10 metres at
a time, while in England we were working with a width
of 5 metres at a time. A high-quality outdoor hardening,
resistant to frost and road salt, making it very durable,
requiring very little maintenance!
Application of concrete highway - Couvin (B)
Client:
BAM Contractors
Implementation period: 2016-2018
The work involved the application of two 8.6 km double
lane concrete highways, including emergency lanes and
ramps east of Couvin in Belgium. The highway is part of
the E420, the main connection between Charleroi and the
French border.
Various structural works, including 190,000 m² of
concrete hardenings, have been realised. The concrete
hardenings consist of double-layer continuous reinforced
The Hoogwaardig Openbaar Vervoerbaan Huizingalaan
is part of the HOV line that will run from WC Woensel to
Ekkersrijt and from WC Woensel to Eindhoven Airport.
The Huizingalaan needs maintenance. Because the
Huizingalaan is part of the HOV network, the construction
of separate bus lanes is part of the design. In 2015, we
constructed the first part of the concrete bus lane (HOV).
The work for the second part started in late April 2016,
and the project was completed in early 2017.
In 2015, a roundabout was built at the Turnhoutsebaan
near Gorps Baantje and the Nieuwkerksbaantje. The
four-month process was carried out to improve traffic
safety and make the nature areas south of Goirle and Riel
accessible.
For the improvement of traffic safety, a second
roundabout was also constructed near the Poppelseweg
in 2017. To give the traffic between Tilburg and Poppel
access at all times, a separate lane was built next to the
Turnhoutsebaan. This assured the accessibility in an
excellent way. The Turnhoutsebaan, the former N630
between Tilburg and Poppel, was transferred to the
municipality of Goirle by the province of North Brabant in
2009, with the task of making this road Sustainable and
Safe by 2020.
2.1.3 Soil remediation
When soil contamination is identified, it is necessary to proceed with remediation. The problem of contaminated soil has
been in the news repeatedly. For example, some places in our country built residential areas on heavily contaminated
grounds.
Soil remediation is the process of freeing a piece of land from soil contamination. DEN OUDEN GROEP and BODAC
can perform soil remediation with associated soil research, demolition, and sieving work. We excavate the soil if it is
environmentally polluted. This is done in consultation with an environmental assistant. The contaminated soil (free of
conventional explosives) can be discharged to a recognised processor.
Most clients often see soil remediation as a financial risk. However, we can combine different specific and complex activities
within a single project, so that you can work efficiently, cost-effectively, and with affordable rates:
• Insulating waste deposits (seal);
• Tank and soil remediation;
• Groundwater remediation and monitoring;
• Discharge of contaminated soil;
• Sieving soil;
• Environmental guidance and advice;
• Taking care of relevant permits.
Implementation period: 2017
The work involves the installation of an upper seal
structure (in accordance with the Dumping Decree) in the
eastern part of landfill Meersteeg in Geldermalsen.
The work mainly consisted of removing part of the existing
waste gas drainage system, equalising, profiling, and
compacting the existing support layer and delivering and
applying the upper seal structure Trisoplast, HDPE foil,
rainwater drainage mat, and ground layer. A rainwater
drain (wells, gutters, pipes) was also applied and the seal
structure was sown with a grass mixture.
The NRE site, former industrial and port area near the
city centre, is being redeveloped. Eleven special factory
buildings, remnants of the former gas industry, form
the basis for the historic character of the NRE site at
the Nachtegaallaan in the centre of the municipality of
Eindhoven.
The work involved the remediation and preparation
(BRM) of the NRE site phase 2 through 4 in Eindhoven.
The remediation consists of drainage and purifying
contaminated groundwater and excavating and disposal
of contaminated soil. According to experts who studied
the contaminated soil under the former industrial site,
there are no risks to public health during the remediation
of the NRE site.
2.2 UXO clearance (BODAC)
The Dutch soil contains a large number of Conventional Explosives (CE) From World War II. The presence
of ammunition in the soil poses a permanent danger to people and the environment. BODAC specialises
in detecting and removing conventional explosives.
2.2.1 Knowledge and advice centre
When there are indications that a project site may contain unexploded ordnance (UXO), BODAC can conduct a (historical)
research before earthmoving activities are carried out. The aim is to give a well-founded advice on the presence or absence
of UXO and the necessary steps to be taken. This research is done according to Dutch WSCS-OCE certification and
inconformity with the standards of the Dutch association of explosives detection companies, the Vereniging voor
Explosieven Opsporing (VEO).
27
2. What do we offer?
2.2.2 Land soil UXO clearance
We have various methods for detecting UXO:
Manual surface detection
Through manual surface detection, our specialised
staff detect UXO using a magnetometer and/or a
metal detector up to a depth of approximately 4.5 m
below the ground.
Non-real time surface detection
Non-real time (computer-assisted) surface detection
with multiple sensors makes it possible to scan large
parts of your project locations in a relatively short
time up to a depth of approximately 4.5 m below the
ground.
Depth detection
Besides surface detection, BODAC can also perform
depth detection up to a depth of approximately 18 m
below the ground, both in land soil and underwater.
28
2. What do we offer?
2.2.3 Waterbed explosives detection
Detecting and securing conventional
explosives in an underwater environment
is a difficult and challenging
operation. Depending on the
environment and the depth of the
objects, BODAC will use underwater
detection, depth detection, ROV
(Remotely Operated Vehicle), or
divers to detect, identify, move,
and secure individual objects. Our
diving equipment complies with the
standards of WOD-SOE and IMCA.
2. What do we offer?
2.2.4 Archaeology
BODAC can carry out all facets of
the archaeological research for you.
It is often necessary to conduct
archaeological research and research
into UXO prior to development
plans. Because BODAC offers both
disciplines, you only have to deal
with one contract party, which
communicates and works much
faster and easier. BODAC works
according to the current version
of the Dutch Archaeology Quality
Standard (KNA) and is in possession
of the BRL SIKB 4000 certificate.
2.2.5 Aircraft recovery
An aircraft recovery is a complex task
that requires attention to human
remains, conventional explosives,
and archaeological finds. Because
of these aspects, it is very important
to work very accurately during an
aircraft recovery operation. Because
BODAC has unique screening
systems, very small particles can be
separated in the soil. This means that
no object can be overlooked during
an aircraft recovery operation.
Nordstream 2: PUXO 2X submarine pipelines
Client:
N-Sea
Implementation period: 2017
The historical research for the Transport Systems and
Sewer Pumping Stations North project involved five subareas
in the Betuwe, where Waterschap Rivierenland will
carry out work on a number of sewage treatment plants.
The total length of the grids is 20 km.
The Nordstream 2 project involves two submarine
pipelines with a diameter of 1.20 metres, including
onshore facilities. The pipelines stretch from the Russian
coast all the way to the German coast, straight through
the Baltic Sea.
The historical research focused on the extent to which the
project area was involved in war operations in the 1940-
1945 period. The Betuwe was one of the most affected
areas during World War II. Ochten, Opheusden, and Zetten,
among other places, were so heavily damaged that after
the liberation, residents had to wait several months before
they could return. The Betuwe was on the front line from
September 1944 until the end of the war in May 1945.
In addition to these war operations, the Betuwe was also
under water for a long time: the Germans blew up the
Rijndijk in early December 1944, which flooded the area
between Tiel and Elst. The water not only drove Allied and
German troops out of the area, but also erased many war
traces such as craters. This made it difficult to interpret
the aerial photographs from 1945.
The Baltic Sea has a long history of naval warfare, which
has led to various remains on the seabed. These remnants
consist of sea mines, aerial bombs, and torpedoes. At the
end of World War II, ammunition was also transferred
to areas in the Central Baltic Sea and east of Bornholm
Island. This ammunition included both conventional and
chemical ammunition. After World War II, some areas were
also used for military training, which means remains of
these activities could also be present.
Implementation period: 2015-2016
Noka Offshore GmbH is working on the construction of
the NordLink HVDC cable between Germany and Norway.
This cable system runs between the German, Danish, and
Norwegian waters over a total distance of approximately
516 km. Before the HVDC cable can be installed, a
programme of UXO survey, identification, and removal is
required. NOKA has granted the UXO identification and
removal of Lot 3 of the cable route, with the exception
of internal and dyke transitions, to the combination of
BODAC and N-Sea. Lot 3 runs from the landing area in
Büsum in Northern Germany (KP 0) to the border of
Germany and Denmark.
The overall goal is to complete an EXO and pre-installation
study, obtain MBES, SSS, SBP, and gradiometer data along
the corridor route to verify the water depth, and clear the
route of UXOs and other buried seabed hazards.
In order to increase the storage and handling capacity
of the Koole Terminals, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam has
decided to realise an additional quay. In order to safely
create the quay, it is necessary to first inspect the area
for the presence of Unexploded Ordnance. This work is
being performed by BODAC. Based on historical research,
the area is suspected to contain 1,000 lbs of residual
ammunition. UXO can be present to a depth of 7 metres
below NAP. BODAC performs depth detection up to about
11 metres below ground level.
In order to investigate the area with as little groundwork
as possible, BODAC will use its own equipment. BODAC
has a depth detection system equipped with state-ofthe-art
technology. This ensures that all objects that fall
within the research assignment are located and the client
is assured that there are no more explosives present that
pose a risk to the realization of the new quay.
TUCrail Belgian Rail Engineering has commissioned
BODAC to carry out the UXO Clearance. Many war
operations took place here during World War I and II. The
railway infrastructure also soon came to the attention of
the Allied Air Force, making it the target of multiple Allied
bombings between 1940 and 1944. To clear the research
area of ammunition, various detection tools have been
used, such as active detection, passive detection, and
ground radar. Depth detection has also been carried out
before pressing a collector under the railway. BODAC
found various conventional explosives from World War I
and II during the work. The work for the first phase ‘the
TW building’ was completed in February 2015. BODAC
has recently been commissioned for the second phase,
the ‘WGM building’, and cleared all tracks, overhead poles,
and platforms to be realised.
The Province of Zeeland, in close cooperation with the
Ministry of Defence and the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, is
preparing the construction of the Michiel Adriaanszoon
de Ruijter barracks in Zeeland. The barracks (almost 70
ha in size), a new accommodation for the navy to be used
from 2020, will be located east of the Buitenhaven in
Vlissingen. In the context of preparations for the barracks,
BODAC was commissioned by the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf to
perform UXO clearance in an area of 41.6 ha.
BODAC found five 500 pounders from World War II on the
site. Vlissingen was the target of multiple heavy bombings
during World War II. The Explosives Disposal Service blew
up the bombs in a controlled explosion in July 2016.
high quality compost. Our main activity is managing the
Food
composting process from start to finish. Different types of
green waste are processed into biomass and soil improvers
(such as compost).
The municipalities have the choice of depositing green
waste directly at DEN OUDEN GROEP or to have us collect
it at the GAD Regional Station in Crailo. Furthermore, DEN
OUDEN GROEP switches out the green waste containers
on the environmental routes. Sorting of the green waste
by the municipality is rewarded through a rate system.
In this work, DEN OUDEN GROEP excels in logistic
flexibility and its central location, and DEN OUDEN GROEP
delivers topsoil and tree substrates to municipalities that
are mostly made of their own green waste. Furthermore,
DEN OUDEN GROEP demonstrates that the biomass that
is made reduces the necessary tonnes of CO 2 compared
to fossil fuels. Finally, DEN OUDEN GROEP also provides
a place for people with a distance to the labour market,
a form of social return that is a standard part of our
Implementation period: 2016-2017
Led by the municipality of Westvoorne, the various
municipalities in the Rijnmond region have started
working together to have their green waste processed by
a green waste processor. The municipalities are Maassluis,
Vlaardingen, Brielle, Hellevoetsluis, Nissewaard, Capelle
aan den IJssel, Barendrecht, and Westvoorne. DEN
OUDEN GROEP was granted this project by centrally
locating its collection depot. This was achieved by
concluding a partnership with SUEZ in the Waalhaven-
Rotterdam.
This unburdens the municipalities because there is no
need for them to pre-sort and they can leave this to
DEN OUDEN GROEP. The total volume of green waste is
approximately 14,000 tonnes. DEN OUDEN GROEP also
delivers substrates and soil improvers to the municipality
of Rotterdam. This means the green waste of the Rijnmond
municipalities is partially recycled as landscape substrate,
tree ground or tree soil.
The cooperation of engineering agency Arcadis, Peter
van Daal Cultuurtechniek en Groenvoorziening, and DEN
OUDEN GROEP is providing better protection against
high water along the Meuse. To improve the flow of the
Meuse in Limburg, the flood plains need to fill up more
quickly in case of a flood.
During the (chipping) work, a large amount of pruning and
log chips was released. DEN OUDEN GROEP has cascaded
the wood from the work area as a raw material to deposit
it as high in the chain as possible. The client is very
pleased with the cooperation and the result.
3.1.1 About our fertilizers
The organic Fertilizers are produced in Helmond (North Brabant) on the basis of organic raw materials from poultry and
cattle. The production facility features state-of-the-art technology and runs under the supervision of a highly educated
production team. The production capacity is approximately 60,000 tonnes or organic Fertilizer per year.
Organic Fertilizers from FERM O FEED are convenient and fundamental organic Fertilizers with a proven yield. The stable
organic material content is combined with a relatively high NPK content. Moreover, it is a 100% natural product. Organic
Fertilizers are easily applied in the field. The pellets can be spread across the land with the same machine that is used for
mineral Fertilizers.
Positive results from FERTIPLUS ®
for fruit trees - Province of Zeeland (NL)
Perfect pears - Portugal
One of our agents in the Netherlands, R. van Wesemael
BV, started a trial led by Jan van Dillen in 2011.
This study was intended to determine the positive results
of the use of FERTIPLUS ® in apple and pear breeding. They
used FERTIPLUS ® 4-3-3 for the apples and FERTIPLUS ®
4-2-10 for the pears. Additional nitrogen and ammonium
sulphate were also added.
A pear grower in the Bombarral area in Portugal, famous
for the pear ‘Pêra Rocha’, is very satisfied with FERTIPLUS ® .
Despite the difficult season, he could see the effects of our
FERTIPLUS ® . The quality is perfect with minimal losses
during harvesting. The vitality of the plant also ensures
that there were no problems with diseases or fungus.
The results were amazing. In addition to a higher yield
and increasing the fruit size, there was also a higher intake
of nutrients. In particular, the absorption of potassium,
calcium, magnesium, and silicon was visible in the fruit.
This was noticeable by the large size, improved hardness,
taste, colour, and longer shelf life. You could really see that
better mitosis had taken place. The use of FERTIPLUS ®
brings more organic life into the soil. Increasing the soil
life improves the absorption of nutrients. The structure
of the soil improves, which increases the air and water
permeability. The grower was very pleased with the
FERTIPLUS ® product.
After the potato harvest, the sizes are
significantly constant - Dominican Republic
More yield and the uniformity of the carrots
is excellent - Benin
Manuel Martinez is the manager of a 72-hectare farm in
the mountains of the Dominican Republic. The main crop
is potato, and the season runs throughout the entire year.
That is why all stages of the potato cultivation must be
visible at the same time. When the potato is cut, they only
add FERTIPLUS ® during the second batch, to reduce the
risk of burning the seedlings on the cut edges. The use per
hectare is 64 bags of 25 kg FERTIPLUS ® (1,600 kg/ha).
When they mix FERTIPLUS ® with mineral Fertilizers, the
use per hectare is 40 bags of 25 kg FERTIPLUS ® (1,000
kg/ha).
In collaboration with IFDC in the ‘2Scale project’,
FERM O FEED has supported various projects in East
African countries. One of the studies took place in Benin.
FERTIPLUS ® was used to grow carrots. A dosage of 1,250
kg/ha was used and compared to a dosage of 5,000 kg of
local Fertilizer. The yield of FERTIPLUS ® was 30.5 tonnes/
ha against 20.6 tonnes/ha. The uniformity of the carrots
was excellent, as was the length and diameter. By applying
FERTIPLUS ® the yield increased by 50%. Another example
which shows the effectiveness of FERTIPLUS ® .
After just a few weeks, a significant difference in the
size and intense green colour of the leaves of the potato
plants is visible. After the potato harvest, the sizes are
significantly more constant compared to their production
without the use of FERTIPLUS ® , which also translates into
a higher yield for the farmer.
3.2 Soil improvers & growth site improvement
Soil improvers are used to improve the soil structure and increase the soil fertility. The soil improver must
be processed into the top layer of the soil so that plants grow better and healthier. The most important
effect of a soil improver is ensuring good physical, chemical, and organic properties of the soil, which
increases the soil fertility and allows plants to grow in an optimal environment. The range of DEN OUDEN
GROEP includes the following soil improvers, tree granules, compost products, and tree nutrients:
municipality of Rotterdam
Implementation period: 2017-2019
DEN OUDEN GROEP has provided 1000 m3 of Sylvester
tree bark for chrysanthemum nursery Janity Flowers B.V.
Janity Flowers took care of the transport themselves and
used a self-designed car to counteract soil densification as
much as possible. The tree bark was then slightly milled in
the top later. The tree bark is perfectly suited for preventing
compaction and rooting is being stimulated because of
the open structure that is created in the ground.
By first carrying out several trials with different products
in big-bags, ranging from fine to coarse, the joint choice for
Silvester Tree Bark Fraction 10-25 was made.
Janity Flowers B.V. is a year-round chrysanthemum
nursery founded in 1986. In 2005, the nursery moved to
Bruchem, where a completely new 48,000 m² company
was constructed that is still the most modern one in the
Netherlands.
DEN OUDEN GROEP supplies various types of soil
improvers to the municipality of Rotterdam to ensure that
nearly 600,000 trees and other greenery facilities remain
in top shape.
Trees in Rotterdam are often planted in the middle of an
urban area under non-ideal conditions, such as hardening,
on roofs of parking garages, and in roof parks. These trees
have little underground growth space. In order to keep
these trees and greenery in top shape, it is necessary to
fill the tree or plant holes, lawns, and flower boxes with soil
that is composed according to the right specifications. A
good and stable product is very important for the medium
term and the further future of the trees that need to grow in
it. By applying high-quality soil improvers and substrates,
Rotterdam ensures healthier and better quality trees and
plants, and thus a healthier living environment for its
citizens.
This involves over 20,000 tonnes/year of tree sand, tree
soil, tree granules and flower box substrate. All produced
under the RAG-certificate.
Soil improvers for Oosterpark - Amsterdam
In collaboration with Donkergroen (a nationally operating
organisation of creative green thinkers), DEN OUDEN
GROEP has provided the roof garden substrate for the
‘ABN AMRO Pavilion’ project at De Zuidas in Amsterdam.
The old substrate in the garden of ABN AMRO has been
supplemented with a mixture of volcanic rocks, sieved
rubble, compost and coarse plant materials. The durable
mixture that is created is 100% recyclable as a substrate
for roof gardens.
DEN OUDEN GROEP is the supplier of several specific soil
improvers that we have in standardised production. In the
case of Oosterpark, a number of products are not standard
products, but we can offer a customised product in
accordance with the specifications. Through a laboratory
analysis, we showed that the product is composed exactly
as the municipality of Amsterdam had envisioned it. This
way, under BRL 9335-4, we can always offer a tailormade
product in any field.
The park is situated slightly lower than the surrounding
districts, which means it has to process a lot of water.
Moreover, the subsoil is fairly unstable because it is on
top of peatland. The result is that the park literally washes
away and continues to sink. With soil improvement, the
soil rises and the park will stabilise.
Dayenne van Overdijk - van der Veeken speaking
If you like what you do,
you never have to work!
”I have been working at DEN OUDEN
GROEP with much love and fun since
September 2009. At the time, the family
business took over Groenrecycling in
Rosmalen from the family business of
my parents, where I had already been
working on the weighbridge since
January 2005. I am very proud to be
able to work for this beautiful family
business! Those who already know me
are well aware of this ;).
I basically grew up in the green sector,
and DEN OUDEN GROEP gives me all
sorts of opportunities and challenges
that allow me to grow personally. I
am now an account manager and I
sell soil improvers for public greenery,
and I am like a spider in the web who
feels involved in the entire company.
Moreover, you regularly see me as the
face of our company at trade fairs to
promote ‘our’ company and share my
passion.
The best thing is that we connect
to many target groups that have
something to do with soil and nature.
In many cases, one of our services
and/or products can be of some use to
both the green and grey sectors, which
distinguishes us from the rest. It truly
feels like ‘our’ company because we
work with a great team of colleagues
and are given all sorts of opportunities
to think of a better solution for our
relations together, with heart for the
business.”
3.3 Groundcovers
Few people consider weeding as a hobby, so prevent weeds with groundcovers. Groundcovers have
many advantages; for instance, the soil remains moist for longer and does not dry out. Moreover, the soil
particles do not splash up against the stems and leaves of your plant. The bacteria in the soil increase
under the soil coverings and are converted into humus.
We can offer you different types of groundcovers of all types and sizes:
• Pine peels
• French tree bark
• Wood chips
• Peat litter
• Stable litter
• Sawdust
The choice for tree bark means less filling and maintenance work and a decorative addition for any garden. The wood chips
look fresh and healthy and give your garden a natural look. To increase comfort and liveability of various animal species, we
have peat litter, stable litter, and sawdust.
3.4 Biomass
With the term biomass, we mean the total of plant and animal materials in an ecosystem. The vegetable
raw materials that fall under ‘biomass’ are used as biofuel for energy generation in power plants. In
addition to biofuels, biomass can also be used for the production of Bio(Based) raw materials or biofilter
material.
3. What do we create?
3.4.1 Biofuels
Biofuels are used for energy generation. It is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Of course, biofuels are free of impurities
and available in various shapes and types. We can supply under NTA-8080 (Better Biomass certification), which guarantees
a sustainable origin of the wood (that is used as biofuel). Suitable streams are selected by means of strictly monitored
collection. This way, we make sure that streams which are suitable for food production or the manufacturing industry are
not used as biofuel.
The international demand for biofuel is increasing. We produce biofuels at our own locations, but also in forests or at the
locations of other companies. The CO 2 emissions are reduced if you situate the production close to the ovens.
3.4.2 Biofilter material
A biofilter can be used to purify air or water and may consist of rootwood, tree bark, peat, or coconut shells. Purification of
the air or water is done by the microorganisms present in the filter.
Woodchips used as biofilter media
47
3. What do we create?
3.4.3 Bio(Based) raw materials
Our soil is deteriorating and fossil fuels and energy sources will be exhausted in
the short term. We are all responsible for this happening, but together, we can
also achieve the turnaround. A new approach is necessary, because we have
the responsibility to leave the next generation with a vibrant planet. In order
to increase our value in this field, we will heavily invest in the production and
delivery of BioBased products in the coming years.
The BioBased prototypes are produced on the basis of (bio)polymer and
(agricultural) residual flows such as (roadside) grass, natural grass, natural
fibres, aquatic plants, bell pepper/tomato stems, and sugar beet pulp that are
normally composted.
Biomass as a Bio(Based) raw material is a very environmentally friendly
choice: renewable and virtually CO 2 neutral. Bio(Based) raw materials are
available as wood and grass fibres (optionally in pallet form), but also as A-
and B-wood in various fractions. The collected wood can be used, with or
without intermediate processing, as a Bio(Based) raw material in, for instance,
the chipboard industry. This way, we give biomass a second life, so that the
industry has to cut less trees. This raw material is sufficiently available yearround!
The BioBased prototypes made of grass fibres which we produce and market with PaperWise and Millvision are:
• Garden bench
• Grid/fencing
• Copying and letter paper
A family business in heart and soul
”You often hear that family businesses are special organisations that stand out within the Dutch business
world, but are also special to work for if you are not part of the family. What makes it so special, even after
20 years? Den Ouden is a versatile company with room for people who are motivated and want to move
forward. We are continuously on the move. Lines are short and Den Ouden tries to be the best in every area
where we are active. This can be in the field of sustainability, quality, environment, or social enthusiasm. In
short, it is a company to love with an eye for nature, people, and the environment. For us as employees, the
trick is to communicate this well to the outside world. Naturally!”
