Sustainability
Sustainable processing
DEN OUDEN GROEP is a company where sustainability is important. We think sustainable, we do
sustainable and we innovate to be more sustainable. For now we have 70 years of experience and
the knowledge and expertise of our partners.
We follow a chain approach for the processing of green
residual flows. We see the entire process in light of acquiring
the maximum sustainable return from the green residual
flows against an as low as possible CO 2 -emission. This already
starts with trimming, mowing and/or grubbing of the
greenery and only stops with transferring the greenery into
energy, premium soil improvers or ground materials for the
manufacturing industry.
Our chain approach requires proper collaboration between
you as a client and us. This collaboration is aimed at the
long term and has to contribute to us, together, acquiring
the maximum return from the green residual flows to be
processed.
Within this collaboration, our role is aimed at providing you
as a client with support and advice and creating an effective
work method with an adequate and rapid service for the
5
Sustainability
customer. Here, our relation manager takes the lead of the
project and is supported by our planner and the production
managers of our processing locations.
Sustainable processing starts with a clear and sorted offer
of the green residual flows. Our purpose is to create the
correct division in the residual flows and to limit subsequent
separation. By dividing the greenery properly early in
the process the necessity for extra actions is prevented.
Consequently, less transport is necessary, extra separation
does not need to take place and, moreover, cost reduction is
realised for the client. With this approach, we minimalise the
CO 2 -emission at our processing locations.
Forestry
DEN OUDEN GROEP supports forestry. This way we ensure the
chipping and/or disposal of green residual flows to one of
our processing locations or energy plants. The green residual
flows for biofuel mostly originate from public spaces and
forests with low or no ecologic value, because it often can
remain there. Internationally there is more need for biofuel.
We perform the production of biofuels on our own locations,
but also in forests or with colleague companies. If you localise
production to be near ovens, you reduce the CO 2 -emission.
CO 2 -reduction
By awarding the CO 2 -reduction certificate we provide insight
into the amount of reduced CO 2 -emission with regard to a
European reference with fossil fuels. We award the certificate
under the auspices of a completely independent certification
institution that, for instance, provides the accreditation and
award of the NTA 8080.
With the certificate the client shows that they effectively
contributed in the entire chain to reducing the use of fossil
fuels and as such have contributed to reducing the CO 2 -
emission.
We have an expansive and well maintained machine park with
modern truck (crane) combinations. The material is deployed
from our efficient and economical network of reception,
transhipment and process locations for green residual flows.
The machines that process the residual flows on this location
are environment-friendly because of their electric and/or
hybrid power. As such, during processing CO 2 -emission is also
reduced.
We are certified in accordance with the CO 2 -performance
ladder. This is demonstrable proof that we – and our
partners, subcontractors and suppliers – are heading in the
right direction and continually reduce our CO 2 -production.
This also means that we do not just do so in our company
management, but also in our projects. In our policy we are
attentive to how, on the one hand, we can develop in a
sustainable manner (energy and materials) and on the other
hand how we can reduce (energy, CO 2 and waste). Our energy
policy is aimed at making our company management more
energy sufficient and sustainable. Our objective is to realise
2 percent of CO 2 -reduction each year.
We share the knowledge we gained and continue to gain
with our subcontractors and suppliers, so that they will also
reduce their own CO 2 -production. Throughout the entire
chain a conscious effort is made to reduce the emission of
CO 2 .
Innovation
Innovation begins with experience, creative craftsmanship
and the courage to think outside the box. As entrepreneurs,
this is in our blood. We see opportunities, create opportunities
and take opportunities for our own.
The continual innovation of our organisation and products
is the key to our success. As such, we also stimulate our
subcontractors and suppliers to provide better solutions.
Together with our suppliers, subcontractors and our skilled
and very experienced employees we are able to think of
innovative solutions and execute these.
The advantage of our organisation is that our knowledge
is not limited to only the (green) waste sector of the Dutch
market. We are active worldwide across various sectors,
such as the production of (organic) resources and building
materials for farming, gardens and roads, offshore industry,
ground, road and water construction, (utility) construction,
green recycling and area development. By these expansive
activities an interaction is established between the different
disciplines. This interaction is the source of our innovation
and results in new products, cleaner and more efficient work
methods and less residual flows.
Collection of Green Residual Flows
A new beginning...
for your green residual flows
The application possibilities for green residual flows are aplenty. Therefore, we invest in the
development of new applications of green residual flows in accordance with the cascade principle.
The applications of green residual flows as soil improver or as
biomass for energy plants is common knowledge and usually
the only way green residual flows are processed. DEN OUDEN
GROEP also supports the application of biomass as resource
for the industry.
Alongside the above-mentioned applications green residual
flows also contain resources for application in, for instance,
the pharmaceutical, plastic, paper and clothing industry. DEN
OUDEN GROEP supports, stimulates and is closely involved in
development in these areas.
Profit volume
Cascade model
Pharmaceutical products
and premium chemicals
Food and Animal Food
Chemicals and materials
Fuels
Energy and heat
Furthermore, at present we also know applications for
grass that were previously unused. We deliver qualitatively
premium grass to our partners to be processed into cardboard.
This cardboard is applied in for instance the production of
sustainable packaging materials.
One of the last developments in which DEN OUDEN GROEP
was closely involved is the bio refinery from taxus to Taxol.
Taxol is a valuable resource for the medicine industry and
is applied as a component in medicines against cancer.
For some time, we work closely with Taxustaxi. On our
locations free taxus has been collected for the fight
against cancer.
The Cascade principle focuses on the application of flows in
places where they have the most value with the eventual
objective of a complete bio based economy, where green
residual flows are the resource for new products.
Our examples of this are our bio filters from tree roots,
substrates for planting site (improvement), and resources for
the chipboard industry and premium RHP-Compost as peat
replacement for the soil industry. Because of the production
of RHP-compost, less peat needs to be sourced from peat
fields in, for instance, Poland and Estonia. Consequently,
valuable nature is maintained, less CO 2 emitted to get this
peat to Holland and maximum profit is obtained from a part
of the green residual flows.
Leaf Mulch
Leaf Mulch is made of 100% leaves and composted on rills. Because of the temperature
reached during the composting, possible weed seeds lose their ability to sprout. A large
advantage of Leaf Mulch is that it stimulates a diverse soil life by which deficiencies are
reduced and protection against illnesses and funguses is provided. By applying the product
as a mulch layer, the soil life creates a beautiful rough foundation.
The application of leaf mulch around the tree or in the watering spots suppresses weeds and
as such the soil is better able to retain fluids.
Advantages
• Retention of fluids and nutrients
• Prevents compaction
• Reduces weeds
• Reduces dehydration
• Protection against illnesses and funguses
• Mechanically distributable and easy to apply
Fertilised Topsoil
Because we only use organic products, our fertilised topsoil does not contain artificial
fertilizers. Because of the high level of nutrients and the correct acidity (pH), plants will
grow optimally in our fertilised topsoil. Because of the large proportion of organic substance
fertilised topsoil has a good water retaining capacity. Plants have access to water and
nutrients for a longer period of time and will therefore grow better.
Advantages
• No artificial fertilizers
• High level of nutrients
• Correct acidity (pH)
• Good fluid retaining capacity
Peat
Peat, also called garden Peat, consists of unearthed blackpeat. After the blackpeat has
been unearthed and is still damp, it is frozen dried and ground. Garden Peat improves the
amount of organic substance in the soil and lowers the acidity. As such, the soil becomes
lighter and the roots of your plants can develop better. Garden Peat offers a healthy basis
for acid loving plants in sand and clay.
Tree Granulate Grauwacke
Tree granulate is specifically aimed at creating planting areas in heavily burdened situations,
such as roads, cycling paths and car parks (traffic category 1 to 5). The tree granulate
has a basis of Grauwacke-rubble and ripened clay. The product grows space for tree roots
to develop in situations in which strict civil technological demands apply. This makes it
possible to develop healthy trees in places where trees would otherwise not grow or would
cause problems by causing rootdamage to the pavement. Grauwacke is a naturally broken
sustainable stone and conforms to the prevailing environmental classification in accordance
with Soil Quality Decree.
Tree granules Lava 16/32
Tree granules Lava 16/32 consists of granules of volcanic igneous rock. Because the evenness
coefficient of the composition is very low, the product leaves plenty of space for the roots. During
the solidification of the rock, a stone skeleton with hollow spaces is formed. These hollow spaces fill
themselves with fertile soil and water. Tree granule is a very loose material with a lot of space for
oxygen and water. When it rains, the water will easily seep through the soil. Some of this water will
be absorbed by the hollow structure to be made available for the tree roots. The skeleton carries
the pressure of the hardened surface, while allowing the roots to grow within the hollow spaces. In
this way, large growing spaces can be created in small areas, such as roadsides. With these tree
granules, trees will have an excellent place to grow with more than enough strength to support
hardened surfaces. The lave is mined in carefully selected quarries.
Advantages
• Large water storage capacity
• Very porous to allow oxygen to reach the roots
• Good anchoring and healthy root growth of your tree
• Good tree growth
• Capillary action
• Decreased lifting of surface by roots
Substrado ® Woodfibre
Substrado ® Woodfibre is produced from wood compost that is made into fibres. This creates a
hygienised product with a very fine structure. By composting the wood, the final product gets
a dark colour. In the final stages of the production process, the product is sieved to 0-30 mm,
and larger pieces are removed.
Advantages
• Improves the structure
• Prevents compaction
• Recycled product
Composted Woodchips
Composted Woodchips are bigger pieces of wood suitable to mix into heavy soils in order to
gain structure or to spread around the tree in order to stimulate a diverse soil life and provide
nutrients over a longer period of time. Because the wood is composted and hygienised, soft
material as bark and twigs disappears. Composted wood chips are sieved to 15-50mm and
are therefore very suitable for long term structure improvement of the soil. This fraction is
also used for paths intensively walked on. For riding paths in for instance fruit cultivation we
customise larger Woodchips.
Advantages
• Structure improvement
• Prevents compaction
Green Roof Substrate
Green Roof Substrate
Green Roof Substrate is an important component of a roof garden. The substrate ensures
that the desired planting is able to grow on the roof.
Broadly, Green Roof Substrate can be divided into extensive (mineral substrate, mostly for
Sedum roofs) and intensive (thicker substrate layer for different plant and tree species) Green
Roof Substrate. This we have sub-divided into a basic product, premium product, and an
ecological product.
The basis of each mixture is the correct nutritional value, for which we look at all the
nutrients the plant needs. These can potentially be supplemented with additional fertilisers.
The optimally tuned Green Roof Substrates ensure that every layer of vegetation receives
appropriate nutrition.
Advantages
• Buffering and delayed draining of rainwater
• Building insulation
• Mitigation of heating of the city
(Urban Heat Island effect)
• Reduction of noise pollution
• Reduction of CO 2 footprint
• Enlarging bio-diversity
• People feel better in a green environment
• Green roofs contribute to a green, sustainable appearance
• A green roof ensures a value increase of buildings and
the neighbourhood
• Extending the lifespan by resolving UV radiation
33
Green Roof Substrate
Green Roof Substrate Extensive
Green Roof Substrate Extensive is the substrate layer for extensive planting. Extensive green roofs are
constructed of a substrate layer and a Sedum plantation (possibly supplemented with herbs and grasses).
Sedum planting is exceptionally suitable for a roof, because these plants can store a lot of water, allowing
them to cope with extended periods of drought. Thus a substrate layer of 50 to 150 mm will suffice,
reducing the combined weight of the roof garden construction. Our roof garden substrate is certified
and accompanied by the required laboratory analyses. Additionally, the substrate is suitable for export
inside and outside Europe. We also offer the option of producing a customised roof garden substrate
composition to your desired specification. Our production location is roofed, allowing us to consistently
supply high-quality roof garden substrate. We can supply our roof garden substrates bagged, in bigbags,
bulk, or blown, to your roof.
Green Roof Substrate
Green Roof Substrate Intensive
Green Roof Substrate Intensive is the breeding ground for intensive planting. Intensive green roofs are
constructed of a thicker substrate layer and greater plant diversity, such as trees, shrubs, perennials, and
flower bulbs. In case of a semi-intensive roof garden, a substrate layer of about 150 mm is usually applied.
For intensive roof gardens a thicker substrate layer of 150 to 700 mm is applied. For larger trees, a substrate
layer of more than 700 mm is often required to provide appropriate rainwater buffering and anchoring of
the tree.
Green Roof Substrate
Green Roof Substrate Sedum Cultivation
Specifically for the cultivation of Sedum, we offer two types of substrate; Sedum cultivation
peat, and Sedum cultivation tray. The substrate Sedum cultivation peat is made for the
cultivation of the Sedum mats. This substrate contains a high number of organic particles
from the added high-quality RHP compost. This results in a higher and prolonged nutrition
supply for the planting. The substrate Sedum cultivation tray is made for the cultivation of
Sedum in trays, also known as clayettes. A thicker layer of substrate is applied here, which
afterwards is placed onto the roof in its entirety, without additional substrate. The density
when saturated is important in this process.
Lava
Lava is the substance created during the eruption of a volcano and is the most fertile ground
there is! In the soil, there is often a lack of sulphur, zinc, selenium, copper and cobalt, but with the
use of Lava these deficiencies are replenished and as such it is a very suitable soil improver. Lava
functions as a nutrients binder and an ion exchanger in the complex system of the exchange
of nutrients between the soil and the plant roots. Lava grains are very light and porous, very
suitable for potting soil or as a ground improver. The product lightens heavy soil in a special
way for many years. Lava ensures better drainage. Lava is suitable for application in both civil
engineering and cultural engineering and is available in various gradations.
An Airo-Tec ® aeration system, together with a good habitat, is the best measure against
roots coming up. In order to guarantee optimal oxygen supply, we advise applying aeration
systems in both the Tree sand and the Tree granulate, consisting of impact resistant tubes
with at least 40% surface perforation.
The aeration tubes are enveloped in nylon
stocking and are finished in the tree
canopies with a round, steel lid. For hardened
Airo-Tec ® Aeration pillar
The Airo-Tec ® aeration pillar was developed to offer an aeration solution above ground,
in places where regular covers of aeration systems for trees do not suffice. Consider for
example, clogging lids, mowing damage to tubes and lids, or pollution from road grime.
As the aeration holes of the Airo-Tec ®
aeration pillar start at 50 centimetres above
ground, they will not get clogged or damaged by abovementioned causes.
In addition, the Airo-Tec ® aeration pillar can
be used as a multi-functional separation
for, for example, parking spaces, drive
ways, pedestrian areas, land boundaries,
etc. The Airo-Tec ® Aeration pillar is made of
2 mm thick stainless steel, meaning it will
withstand (minor) collisions and vandalism.
The pillar is fitted with a large base plate
that serves as a ground anchor, anchoring
it firmly to the ground. For optimal air flow,
aeration holes are fitted to both sides of the
pole.
The Airo-Tec ® aeration pillar can be modified
to the customer’s wishes. For example, by
making the aeration holes into the logo,
or name of the customer, and the pole can
be supplied in every desired RAL-colour
(standard is stainless steel). General specification
AquaTec Water buffer
In an AquaTec Water buffer, clean rainwater is buffered underneath the habitat of the
trees, at a depth of 150 cm. It stores enough rainwater to supply the tree with sufficient
(rain)water during dry periods. Excessive rainwater is infiltrated into the soil, or drained
through the regular rainwater drainage system.
The AquaTec Water buffer can be applied in the improvement of the habitats of existing
city trees, and in the creation of habitats for new plantings.
Advantages
• Integral approach for the design of the public space.
• Rainwater as a nutritional element instead of waste.
• Improved functionality of trees in: capturing particulate matter,
trapping CO 2 and evaporation, which combats the warming of the city.
• In the event of a potential infiltration of excessive rainwater, it
By combining durable water management
with the optimisation of the habitat, the
trees remain green longer, improving the
decorative value of the trees, as well as their
function in air-quality improvement.
prevents the drying out of these inner-city areas.
• Durable appearance to your residents.
• Cheaper than regular solutions, because the water is used there
where it falls.
Biofuels & Bio Resources
Biofuels
Biofuels are used for energy generation. It
is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
Of course, biofuels are free of pollution and
available in various forms and gradations.
We can deliver under NTA-8080 certification,
which guarantees a sustainable origin of the
wood. Suitable flows are selected by means of
an accurately monitored collection process. The
trimmings are separated from the other green
flows and freed of pollution. Subsequently, the
trimmings can be chipped or reduced into the
fraction desired by the customer.
Energetic applications for waste wood
(Grade A and B) are combustion in a biomass plant, district heating and (industrial) heating applications with biomass
for the generation of electricity and heat. It is also added in waste incineration plants, in order to the regulate the
combustion process.
Bio Resources
Biomass as a bio resource is a very environmentally
friendly choice. Bio resources are
renewable and as good as CO 2 -neutral.
The collected wood can in many cases, with
or without intermediate processing, be used
as a resource in the chipboard industry.
As such, we give biomass a second life, so
that the industry has to cut down fewer trees.
Bio resources are supplied as fresh wood, but
also as grade A and B wood in various fractions.
Biofilter materials
Biofilter material (also called just biofilter) is a collective name for those organic products
that are successfully used in air purification installations where ‘odour’ is concerned. Our
society sets high demands for our living environment. This concerns odour, air purification,
and other harmful substances. We are manufacturers of biofilter material for organic odour
treatment in a specific mixing ratio, or in different layers. The air to be purified is forced
through the biofilter material, where micro-organisms remove undesirable odours.
In the production of biofilter material, the focus is on a large contact-surface at as low an
air-resistance as possible. The biofilter material should be neither too fine nor too coarse,
the air should be evenly divided over the filter. We supply biofilter material made of, among
other things, torn root-wood and tree bark.
But also mixtures, or other customer-specific biofilter materials, can be made ‘to measure’
by us. The different products can be used individually or in any combination, to create the
best possible result in any specific situation. Because we work together with permanent
partners, we can also install the entire biofilter installation for you.
Advantages
• High density
• Good water retention capacity
• Large surface for micro-organisms
• Good balanced supply of nutrients
• Low filter resistance
• Good absorbent properties
• Tool life up to 5 years possible
of particles, or used as an airflow layer with a low density, underneath other biofilter
materials. By using root-wood, we ensure maximisation of the lifespan of the biofilter.
The fibre-like structure of the torn root-wood contributes to an optimal habitat for
bacteria (biotope).
Tree bark
Maritime Tree bark (French Maritime Pine) has a long lifespan, thanks to its hard structure,
and is thereby exceptionally suitable as biofilter material. In addition, Pin Sylvester tree
bark (Scots Pine) and Douglas tree bark are also suitable as biofilter materials. We will
gladly advise you on what fraction(s) are most suitable for your biofilter.
Biomass
BioBased Prototypes
Our soil is degrading and fossil fuels and energy resources will shortly be exhausted.
Together we are responsible for this situation, but together we can also turn it around.
A new approach is required, because we have a responsibility to pass a viable earth on to
the next generation. To improve our own contributing value, in the coming years we will
make significant investments in the production and supply of BioBased prototypes.
The BioBased prototypes are based on (bio)polymer and (agro-)waste flows, such as
(roadside) grass, natural grass, natural fibres, water plants, pepper/tomato stalks, and
sugar beets pulp, which is normally turned into yeast or composted.
Biomass is, as a Bio(Based) material, a very environmentally friendly choice: renewable,
and practically CO 2 -neutral. Bio(Based) materials can be supplied as wood and grass
fibres (whether or not in pellet form), but also as A and B-wood in various fractions.
The collected wood can, in most cases, with or without intermediate steps, be used as
Bio(Based) material in, for example, the particle board industry. This way we give biomass
a second life, so that less trees get cut down by the industry. There is plenty of annual
supply of this material!
We produce and market the following
BioBased prototypes together with
PaperWise and Millvision::
• Garden bench
• Fences
• Copying and letter paper
Garden bench
The garden bench consists of thermoplastic biocomposite. Thermoplastic bio-composites
are plastics filled with short fibres, or combinations of plastic and tissues or ‘non-wovens’.
The piles/beams measure 100 x 100 mm and can be produced in lengths up to 4 metres.
The benches are two metres wide. They have a greenish colour, with a brownish back-rest.
The colour greys over time.
