OCTOBER 2018
From The
Editor’s Desk
58 Years of Independence later!
This October, as we celebrate
another year of independence as
a united Nation, we take a look
at some of the highlights and
fruits if you will of that freedom.
We begin where every real story
of independence does; with the
people. We take a look at some of
Nigeria’s Amazons of Independence
and democracy. Shinning the
spotlight on the magnificent women
who not only played significant
parts in our early history; but have
also played a significant role
in keeping the nation and our
democracy (an internal symbol of
that independence) on track.
Still on the topic of Amazon’s,
we take a look at Nigeria’s next
generation of Female Multi-
Millionaires and Billionaires; and all
the many ways in which they are
making names and fortunes for
themselves.
Moving on to more theatrical
subjects, we sit down for a chat
with seasoned Hollywood Actress,
Monalisa Chinda and discover
what it’s like to exist in that perfect
space between the old and new.
We talk achievements, challenges,
aspirations and a possible career
change.
Finally, the toast of the season,
the SS19 Fashion Weeks! While we
wait on the magic rising Capitals
like Seoul and Lagos are sure to
deliver, we take a look at some
interesting trends brought on by the
veteran fashion capitals. Accessory
styles and choice fabrics is the
name of the game this SS19 Season
and we’ve got the scoop. Time to
step into our world.
Oh and Here’s wishing Nigeria a
Happy 58th Birthday!
INTERVIEW
nalisa Chinda:
Seasoned Showbiz
by Teresa Aligbe
Nollywood for many Nigerians
particularly in my generation is an
industry in transition. Some refer
to the new crop of Nollywood
movies and actors as Nollywood 2.0 or
New Nollywood with the latter having
it’s very own social media hashtag. Yet
somewhere between traditional (or old
depending on your preference) Nollywood
actors and the spanking new generation
of Nollywood actors as represented by the
likes of OC Ukeje and Adesua Etomi, or
the likes of Monalisa Chinda. A bonafide
member of the transition generation;
actors who both ended the era of
traditional Nollywood movies and begun
what would evolve into “New Nollywood”.
The ability to have not just survived but
thrived in two different eras of Nigerian
showbiz is what makes Monalisa Chinda
a rather interesting subject. Seasoned,
would be the perfect word to describe her
career and graceful, her persona.
Glamsquad had a chat with Monalisa,
on how she got her start, her vision
of things to come, Milestones from a
successful career and a possible change
of vocation.
INTERVIEW
What inspired you to take up a
Career in acting?
I studied theatre arts at the University
of Port Harcourt in River State Nigeria.
Yes, acting hasn’t always been what
i wanted, but i did after all: not just
because i studied theatre arts but
because of my passion for the arts.
What prepared you for your career
as an actor?
I started off as a stage performer
way back in school, so that formed
me and my sensibilities as far as acting
and other forms of entertainment
was concerned. However, we were
not taught about the business side
of entertainment. We were only
taught hands on arts and how we
can give our best in every theatrical
performance. We were however
taught the theoretical part of theatre....
never were we given the hand outs on
how to make money with our talents.
You know, this is how you can monetize
your God given talent… So as at then,
we weren’t really ready for what we are
facing now in terms of monetary value
etc. But we are catching up fast now.
It’s never too late.
What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken
in your Career and did it pay off?
No risk so far so good.
In retrospect what role do you regret
playing or playing the way you did
and why?
In retrospect, I wouldn’t say I regret
playing any role. Every role was an
experience; each carried its own
weight that I was able to interpret so
well within my capacity. I enjoyed
every role I played to the best of my
ability.
What has been your best filming
experience thus far?
I think it must have been when
began my career proper. I enjoyed
acting and producing ’kiss n tell’. That
was my first attempt at producing
my first feature film in 2010 on a very
lean budget and I must say that was
an amazing experience. That was
when i experienced true friendship,
togetherness, trust and great respect.
We meted to one another. My
colleagues came together and
we teamed up and brought that
amazing piece to life and that movie
recorded a huge success.
After decades in the Industry and
several awards, is there any role
that you desire to play and haven’t
yet had the chance to?
Yes. I wish to play a 70- a 90 year
old woman. i would like to see myself
interpret such a complex role. I
wonder when that day would come
(lolll).
If you were to branch out, what
career line or industry would you
branch into?
I would like to branch off to read
international relations. I love the
idea of becoming a diplomat. I am
looking forward to going back to
school just for that though. That is one
i dream I intend to fulfil, and so shall it
be by The Grace of God.
What is the most challenging part of
being in the movie industry?
The fact that every word you utter
in the public domain, you will be held
accountable. That you cannot act
or behave ‘anyhow” in the public
domain, you must be in control of
yourself and your emotions. Whilstit’s
ok to be yourself, be conscious of
yourself and what you “put” out there.
What is your favourite part about
being a celebrity?
That you are sometimes given
preference treatment at certain
places, like the bank, the restaurants,
at airports, social gatherings, being
able to put zillion of smiles on
people’s faces etc
What is the most overrated part of
being a celebrity?
Celebrities are human. We are
allowed to make one or two mistakes;
I would wish the public will judge us
less.
Who has been your all-time
favourite Director to work with and
why?
Mr Lancelot Imasuen and Hon
Desmond Elliot. For no particular
reason these two are people
persons. They make you work
harder than the labourers, they drill,
they curse under their breath if you
don’t get it right. No short cuts and
definitely no cheap excuses and
yes, they are extremely passionate.
Who is your favourite actor?
I can’t say. Most of them are
great actors and interpret their roles
to the best of their abilities given the
very stringent conditions in which
we work. It’s so tough but it’s a
good TOUGH.
What in your opinion has been
your biggest accomplishment?
So far i must say that God has
been great. First, i started my talk
show, ‘You and I with Monalisa in
2015’. Secondly, opening a film
school in Porthacourt, Rivers State ,
where i come from.
What has been the most difficult
part of balancing fame and your
personal life?
There are no difficulties at all. I
am well-grounded therefore I know
when to draw the line. Nothing
interferes with my family. My home
front must be intact before any
career comes to play. That’s how it
has worked for me. I do not know
any other way.
How successful have you been in
forming lasting friendships within
your industry and how important
do you think such relationships
are?
I would say I have maintained
a cordial relationship with my
colleagues. Respect is key and that
is what plays out every time we all
get together. Weshare common
interest and goals and we try to
support one another as best as
possible.
What the next big thing for you
moving forward?
The next big thing for me is to
go back to school to study
international relations, GOD BEING
MY HELPER.
INTERVIEW
FASHION
PRADA
Early SS19
Trends
Valentin
Yudashkin
by Teresa Aligbe
London, New York,
Paris and Milan have
all come and gone,
giving way to Seoul,
Lagos and other fashion
capitals on the rise. With
the SS19 Fashion Weeks
Internationally still in
full swing and the more
traditional capitals haven
had their say, we’re calling
some early trends for the
SS19 Fashion season. As
we await the excitement
the new comers are set
to bring our way, we take
a look at some consistent
themes and concepts
making the rounds on the
global catwalks without
regard for national barriers.
Balenciaga.
Versace
Satin Affair:
Prada and Versace were
all over satin fabrics
debuting sleek jackets
in satin with the former
also creating a neon
green turtle neck piece
in a style reminiscent
of a vintage air hostess
look in the same fabric.
But if we were to be
completely honest, it was
Balenciaga who was
giving us satin goals with
that lone fuscia satin coord
set on their catwalk.
While It’s been raining all
shades of vintage on the
runways, this particular
trend has seen a good
blend of both vintage
and contemporary
executions. All polished
all worthy of its place as a
new trend.
www.glamsquadmagazine.com 9

FASHION
Ornamental Necklaces:
When Chloe’s Creative Director Natasha Ramsey-
Levi delved into witchcraft, totems and auras in
explaining the inspiration behind the authentic
bohemian Jewelry in her SS19 collection, I was
more than a little apprehensive. But moving
all the witch talk aside and staying Alexander
McQueen’s Sarah Burton had her fair share
of ornamental jewelry on the McQueen
catwalk without the witch stuff. Third
time’s a charm so when we saw some
more ornamental
pieces on the Ottolinger
Catwalk the fate of this
trend was sealed.
Chanel Biking Shorts
Cycling Shorts:
Coco Channel once famously inferred
that High Fashion had no business
drawing it’s inspiration from street style
but rather it should always be
the other way round with street
style drawing inspiration from the
Catwalk. While we never thought
the day would come where
Coco would be defied by her
predecessors, it appears the
day has indeed come. Cycling
shorts with all their street appeal
is a key trend that made it to the
SS19 catwalk even though already
a trend among Fashion Influencers;
from bloggers and stylists to enthusiasts
and of course some of our favourite
celebrities. One of the chief culprits if
you would believe it; Karl Lagerfeld!
Coco’s most infamous predecessor.
Karl Lagerfeld wasn’t alone in this
fashionable act of rebellion with Fendi
making sure cycling shorts where a
SS19 staple by putting them on Gigi
Hadid.
FASHION
Sequined Magic:
Call us over the top but this is one trend, when executed well we’re
always in favour of. Sometimes minimalism gets a little overrated
so we are beyond grateful for Roberto Cavalli, Marco De Vincenzo,
Prada and all our other favourites who judged sequins worthy of
the SS19 Season. From neutrals to over the top multicoloured
takes, there’s something for the shy-sequined-starters to the more
ostentatious veterans.
FASHION
The Return Of
The Headband:
Just when we thought we were all
too old for headbands, much less
sparkly embellished headbands,
High Fashion reminds us that
ridiculous is only ridiculous until
it hits the runway and becomes
a trend. From Miu Miu’s demure
silk headbands to Versace’s over
the top sparkly affair, and Prada’s
studded take, headbands SS19
feels a little like what walking in
Blair Waldorf’s head must look
like and much to her delight,
headbands have finally become
SS19 fashion season...for post-
Speaking of accessories of the
season, Platforms appear to be
some of our favourite designers
SS19 shoe style of choice.
Vivienne Westwood, Kenzo,
Miu Miu, Thom Browne and
Haider Ackerman all opted for
platforms in broad variations
to serve everyone from the
high fashion princess and
the quirky rock type to the sporty brood. Vivienne
Westwood brought all the drama we could
possibly want with over exaggerated sky high
heels and slightly less exaggerated platform
boots. Kenzo kept things chick in bright pink
platform stilettos with white grafitti styled text
on the soles. Miu Miu was serving some major
summer vibes with bold colourful platforms with
petals. Ackerman for their part ensured that
there was something in this trend for the cooker
sporty females with white platform sneakers.
by Ethan Aku
Black women have often
been encouraged to
adopt the European
beauty standards
instead of embracing natural
curls. Although, the fashion
world as we know it is very
cosmopolitan, that being that
rules don’t necessarily apply,
that one must stick to the
styles from a certain culture
or race. This is because a true
fashionista relishes in playing
around the copious options,
no hairstyle embodies black
Amazons Of
The Nigerian
Entertainment
Industry
by Sebastiane Ebatamehi
Onyeka Onwenu, the
renowned Nigerian
songstress who
was dubbed ‘The
Elegant Stallion’ by the media
after her 1982 debut album
was one female musician
who held her ground in
the entertainment industry
not only locally but on the
World stage. She gained
so much notoriety that the
juju king himself, king Sunny
Ade was forced to seek a
collaboration which birthed
the track “Mada wolohun” (Let
Them Say). The song received
massive airplays and huge
international acclaim
prompting the master of Juju
music to seek out two more
collaborations – “Wait for Me”
and “Choices.”
However, as time went on,
music genres like Rap and
Hip Hop begun to gain more
ground and more traditional
genres began to give way
onyeka onwenu
as did the prominence of
some of the brightes female
music entertainers like; Onyeka
Onwenu, Christy Essien-
Igbokwe, Evi Edna Ogholi, Oby
Onyioha and Salawa Abeni
Alidu. As such the face of the
music industry right up to the
early 90’s was male.
In came Weird MC who
wasn’t having any of that! The
bold female rapper took the
industry by storm and from
1990 to 1996, the hardcore
rapper held her own in relation
to her male counterparts
earning her a nomination for
the Headies Artist of the year
alongside Paul Play, D’Banj,
Mode 9 and P Square; with
Paul play winning the revered
award.
The turn of the 21st Century
came with many changes
including the decline of
hardcore rap on the Nigerian
scene. Like a major shift in
genre interest had years
before, this shift successfully
dwindled the relevance and
influence of Weird MC.
The new generation of music
lovers were R&B inclined and
for quite sometime, there
was no female entertainer
at the forefront of the music
Industry.
Fast forward to 2007, a
certain dark skinned lady in
glasses surfaced. Artist Asa
put Nigerian music on the
world map again in 2007
with her songs coming in at
No 3 on the World Charts on
two occasions! Her lovely
vocals and soulful music won
the hearts of many, but the
more expressive youths needed
more! They needed tunes they
could dance and party to, and
this need continued to support
a male dominance in the
industry.
We saw this dominance
expressed in the portfolio of
artists at two of Nigeria’s top
Record Labels. Kennis Music
which was founded in the early
1990s boasted over 23 top
artistes and only of those two
artistes – Kenny Saint Brown and
the Late Goldie were female.
On the other there was regional
music giants, Mo’Hits Records
which ruled the country’s music
scene from 2005 to 2012 with
not a single female artiste
signed to the label!
6 short years later, it’s an entirely
different story with a radically
different plot.
Female entertainers have taken
the industry by storm and this
time, they have come to stay!
The Amazons of the Nigerian
Entertainment industry struggled
and conquered; they have
broken barriers and set a new
standard. It is hard to see
any show in Nigeria without
a top female artiste on the
line up. Not only do Female
entertainers feature in top
shows, they headline them;
top concerts, award shows
and everything in between.
Think Tiwa Savage!
Undoubtedly the game
changer for female
contemporary entertainers
in the country, Tiwa is one
true African woman who has
proven that women are strong
and capable of achieving
anything. She joined Don
Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012
and since then has never so
much as dwindled. Through
her marriage, pregnancy,
delivery and bitter news of
divorce. The Mavin queen
has become the sweetheart
and First lady of the Nigerian
Entertainment industry with
even her male counterparts
holding her in very high
esteem. With over 100 local/
international nominations
and 16 major awards, Tiwa
Savage and her new band
of Amazons are rewriting the
history. Many tabloids have
dubbed her the ‘Beyonce of
Africa’, but at Glamsquad
Magazine, we call her the
‘Tiwa Savage of the World’.
These new generation of
Amazons have mastered the
art of what they do and do not
bow to any pressure or shift in
sound. Just a few days ago,
news broke that songstress
Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye
popularly known by her stage
name ‘Simi’ was named a
Human Rights Ambassador
by the United States Consul
General. The Artiste is also
leading the pack at this year’s
headies as the most nominated
artist. Fancy that?!
