<strong>Cranach</strong>’s art in <strong>the</strong><br />

political centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation<br />

Torgau<br />

Torgau, a former seat <strong>of</strong> power in Saxony and more<br />

than a thousand years old, was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading political<br />

centres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation. The charming old quarter,<br />

home to Hartenfels Palace, is <strong>the</strong> largest intact heritage site<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Renaissance period.<br />

Hartenfels Palace, with its remarkable stone spiral<br />

staircase, was an important source <strong>of</strong> work for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cranach</strong><br />

workshop, particularly during <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> extensive<br />

rebuilding under John Frederick <strong>the</strong> Magnanimous. Visible<br />

examples are <strong>the</strong> architectural sculptures and medallions<br />

that are likely to have been based on <strong>Cranach</strong>’s ideas.<br />

The Grotesque frieze in <strong>the</strong> mirrored room above <strong>the</strong><br />

Grand Staircase is <strong>the</strong> only intact mural that can be attributed<br />

to <strong>Cranach</strong>’s workshop with certainty. The frieze is<br />

currently being restored and can be viewed by arrangement.<br />

<strong>Cranach</strong>’s The Fourteen Holy Helpers can be seen in<br />

St Mary’s Church in Torgau near <strong>the</strong> memorial stone <strong>of</strong><br />

Sophie von Mecklenburg, Electress <strong>of</strong> Saxony. The panel,<br />
