I N T R O D U C T I O N
Jalan Hang Jebat, also called as Jonker Street is the centre street of historical
Chinatown in Melaka. It was once renowned for its antique shops. Many old
traditional looking shop houses can be found in Jonker Street. The area is
really interesting to explore. Many old temples and mosque are nearby and
there are so many fascinating things to see. The heritage houses dating back
up to the 17 th century. At that time, rich Baba Nnonya which also known as
Peranakan, descendent of 15 th – 16 th century Chinese immigrants marrying
local Malay women, lived and did their business here.
Due to more incoming of the tourists and development of the city, Jonker
Street has slowly change its role from residential to serve as commercial
purposes. Café is one of the most common and popularity that can be found
in along the street. So, check out this list of cafes that’ll inject an old school
feel in the straits but with modern food and drinks.

HEESAN CAFÉ

This café was launched last
year which is a very new
café in Jonker Street. Every
corner of the building had
been renovated however
the exterior of the café
itself still preserve the
original looks in well
condition.

The origin is
conserved as to
protect the
culture as well
as the safeness
of the building.

room adds a little touch of
old days favor to the

A place that reflects
the mix of tradition
and modernism that
makes people enjoy
the place very much.
This fan is actually a
wall painting. It is a
traditional Chinese
fan which also called
hand fan.

With the identity fuses
traditional eastern design
with western wit, Heesan
café is creating new
modern experiences.

CAFÉ

An amazing idea that
all the things like
glasses and cups are in
the van.
The Coffee Shop is
impressive with its 1978
Kombi Van Coffee Bar.

The concept of old school
tv, stereo, bikes and
clocks making the entire
place a vintage spot had
caught my attention.
The retro style of
the coffee shop.
Lovely!

I was amazed with the
empty cans displayed on
the wall. Some iconic
some obscure which came
from different countries
of the world.
The rough surface of the
origin wall is remained as
well as the ceiling wood
structure. Although it had
been painted over but it
resembles the age of the
buildings.
People enjoy the
cappuccino.

KAYA KAYA
CAFÉ

The Malay word ‘Kaya’
in English means rich
or wealthy and the
cafe uses it to describe
the level of richness in
food, life, relationship,
health and wealth.

Kaya-kaya Cafe takes
you back in time with
its faded red brick
walls, original artefacts
retained from the past,
dark wooden furniture
and exposed bulbs.

Kaya-kaya Cafe’s
design is
traditional and
inspired from
Malacca’s past.
The café is a
reflection of
Malacca’s rich
culture, history
and traditions
which are passed
down to the
present
generation from
early settlers.

chairs, wooden
tables, an old
design staircase
and a huge
courtyard in the
middle of the
café shop.
Many visitors’ visit
the café is because
of their interior
courtyard and wall
mural which is at
the back of the
building.

They have
amazingly wide
spaces and pretty
backdrops, old
school furniture,
and most
importantly is the
ample natural
lighting!

Beautiful handcarved

being used in Alley
No.5 Café and
hung to display the
cafe’s name.

Chinese
architecture,
antique wooden
door and window
are symbols of
Chinese culture
and art and this
picture
represents it.

I N T E R I O R
The café
makes people
feel calm that
there’re living
back in the
early 1900’s
where the
busy city life
didn’t exist.
The surface of
the origin wall
and floor are
remained.

airconditioned,
though it’s
still ideal for
chilling out
after a long
walk around
Jonker Street.

This last cafe has a
slightly difference
than the before
cafes. The
uniqueness of this
cafe is most of the
building parts is
renovated with
new building
materials. In
which the style of
this cafe is more
into modern
minimalist design.

& family, or even

has huge changes
compared to
others, however
the characteristic of
the centre airwell
still being preserve
as well as the
wooden railing on
the 1st floor.

C O N C L U S I O N
These cafes were selected as they encapsulate culture,
displaying antiques which in turn invoke memories of
times past within their patrons.
Hence the reason that I chose to do a project on cafes is
because some cafe not only serve food and beverages,
they are places where people from all walks of life take a
break from their bustling lives, locals and tourists alike.
Cafes foster social cohesion through the pasts we share.
