Following a two-week break in the Major League
Soccer season, the legs were fresh and the play on
the pitch was really exciting to watch. It was a fun way
to spend a Sunday afternoon, and a great start to the
month of June!

atmosphere here today as we look for another important
three points against a key Western Conference rival,
Colorado Rapids. This franchise has come a long way
over the years, especially since joining MLS. We’re

Good afternoon ’Caps
fans,
We’re back for another
home match today against
a strong Colorado Rapids
team in a really key battle
for points in the Western
Conference. Having won the MLS Cup just two short
years ago, Colorado have an experienced group who
know what it takes to win. It’s very important that we
get a positive result today because Colorado could be
a team that we need to stay ahead of in the standings
come the end of the season.
As we’ve emphasized all year, one of the biggest
keys to success for us this season is protecting our
home turf. We’ve managed to do that quite well so far
with a 4W-1L-2D home record in MLS. With great fan

support, we were able to put in a great performance at
home against Houston last Sunday. Darren Mattocks
did really well to create chances all game and his two
goals were well deserved. He’s worked really hard to
come back and earn playing time since returning from
injury, so everyone’s pleased to see him come in and
do what he does best.
Today will also be the first time that we wear our
new third kit. It’s always exciting for any player to wear
a new kit for the first time, so hopefully we can go out
and make this match one to remember.

the third Kit story

J
ust over two years after the launch of the
club’s inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS)
kit, Vancouver Whitecaps FC unveiled their
new third jerseys on Thursday at BC Place, ending
months of rampant speculation.
The ’Caps MLS side will don the new kit three times
this season, starting today against Colorado Rapids.
Unlike the club’s primary and secondary uniforms,
the third kit’s primary colour is a unique arbutus brown
with sky blue accents, drawing from the various forests
of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. With the
kit, the ’Caps have embraced their roots as the lone
Canadian MLS club on the west coast.
“We are delighted to be launching our third kit,” said
Whitecaps FC executive chair John Furlong. “The kit
is a reflection of Whitecaps FC, and the environment
within which we play. We hope all of our fans will wear
this new kit with pride.”
The new kit is meant to complement the team’s
traditional colours reflected in their primary and
secondary kits — the blues of the ocean and sky; the
white of cresting waves, snow, and glaciers; and the
silver of the light that bounces between them. By adding
brown to the mix, Whitecaps FC feel they’ve accurately
depicted the different aspects of their identity.
“The kit has captured a different aspect of the
northwest, but it’s still an aspect that is prominent
in British Columbia and throughout the region,” said
Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “Hopefully
people will like it as much as we do.”
In addition to the traditional soccer kit, which
includes a jersey, shorts, socks, and training gear,
Whitecaps FC also revealed a full line of streetwear
pieces for fans. The line includes t-shirts for men,
women and children, a hoody, two hats, a scarf, as well
as a replica jersey for youth.
Fans can purchase the third jersey and
complementing pieces at a special kiosk located on
Terry Fox Plaza at BC Place until June 24, as well as
at Whitecaps FC home matches. The merchandise will
also be available online at mlsgearcanada.ca.
Starting on June 25th, the new kit will be available
at retailers carrying Whitecaps FC merchandise,
including most Sport Chek locations.

n the lone Major League Soccer match last
weekend, Vancouver Whitecaps FC I (6W-3L-4D) got off to a great start in the
month of June with a 3-1 home win over Eastern
Conference side Houston Dynamo (4W-4L-4D) on
Sunday afternoon.
Under an open BC Place roof, the 18,811 fans in
attendance saw two sides use plenty of built-up energy
in the first half following their extended breaks from
league action. It was the home side that made the most
of their spell of early pressure to take the lead on four
minutes. With their first attack of the match, Young-
Pyo Lee reached the Houston byline before playing an
exquisite cross to a streaking Darren Mattocks. After
eluding his marker, the young Jamaican steered the
ball into the top corner of the net for the second MLS
goal of his career, and a 1-0 Vancouver lead.
Whitecaps FC looked more assured with their
possession and attacking play in the second half,
and were rewarded for their efforts with a splendidlyworked
second goal on 66 minutes. Gershon Koffie
took a pass from Jun Marques Davidson before finding
the speedy Mattocks with a sublime through ball off
the outside of his right foot. The Caribbean marksman
strolled in and finished with aplomb for his second goal
of the day and a 2-0 Vancouver lead.
Mattocks’ second goal created a festive mood
around BC Place, but Houston kept pressing to find a
breakthrough. It was two of the Dynamo’s substitutes
that would spoil a ’Caps clean sheet on 83 minutes, as
Macoumba Kandji struck home Brian Ownby’s cross
from the right to make it 2-1.
While Houston’s reply made things a bit edgy for
’Caps fans in the late stages, victory was sealed by
the home side on 88 minutes. Koffie was the provider
again with a cross from the right that struck Ownby in
front of the Dynamo goal before falling kindly to Jordan
Harvey. The defender showed great composure to
slot home his first goal with the ’Caps, securing a 3-1
victory for the ’Caps.

ooking to build on an impressive victory
on Bell Pitch at BC Place last weekend,
Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their
three-match home stand this afternoon by hosting
Western Conference rivals Colorado Rapids.
Martin Rennie’s side further enhanced their
credentials as a contender for an MLS Cup Playoff spot
with a superb performance over Houston Dynamo last
Sunday. They now turn their focus to this important
all-conference battle with Colorado, with Vancouver
looking to close the gap further on the frontrunners
in the Western Conference standings. Today’s Major
League Soccer match will also see the Blue and White
don their new third kit of arbutus brown that was
unveiled at BC Place on Thursday.
Today’s match is the third MLS meeting between
Whitecaps FC and Colorado. Both clubs first met at
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on July 9, 2011, with the
Rapids coming away with a 2-1 victory. A first-half
strike by Conor Casey and a second-half goal by
substitute Scott Palguta gave Colorado all three points
on a stormy night in Commerce City, Colorado. Camilo
Sanvezzo replied for Whitecaps FC with what was the
best goal of the match. Their second meeting was
Vancouver’s final match of their inaugural MLS season,
with the Rapids earning another 2-1 victory on October
22, 2011. Alain Rochat gave Whitecaps FC a halftime
lead at BC Place before the Rapids earned all three
points with second-half goals from Jeff Larentowicz
and Wells Thompson. Prior to 2011, Whitecaps
FC played 21 matches versus former American

registered an overall record of 10 wins and 11 defeats
versus Colorado, with the ’Caps claiming seven wins
and four defeats at home to the Foxes during that time.

Well rested and fully focused after an extended break,
Whitecaps FC put in one of their best performances
of the season in defeating 2011 MLS Cup finalists
Houston 3-1. A storyline from last Sunday’s match was
the attacking display of Jamaican youngster Darren
Mattocks. The second overall pick in this year’s MLS
SuperDraft, Mattocks was a menace to a makeshift
Dynamo backline, as the speedy forward could have had
more than the two goals he scored in the game. The
other storyline to be taken from the Houston win was
Whitecaps FC showing another level of maturity in not
only taking the game to a top MLS club, but withstanding
the Dynamo’s very potent and experienced attack.

Today’s contest is an equally challenging task for
Vancouver, with Rennie’s side knowing full well that
results against Western Conference opponents like
the Rapids make a considerable difference to their
position in the standings. With few injury concerns and
an extended run of home matches, Whitecaps FC can
establish themselves in the postseason picture with
what they achieve today and through the remainder
of June. Include a certain Barry Robson to the squad
in the weeks ahead, and ’Caps fans will have genuine
reasons to be excited for the rest of the season.
coLorado rapids
Despite having a new head coach in Oscar Pareja,
there remains a familiar look to Colorado, with many
of the players that took the Rapids to the 2010 MLS
Cup title back with the squad for this season. It can
be said that Colorado have done well to be sitting in a
playoff spot in the Western Conference after playing
the early stages of this season with numerous injury
concerns. As many as 10 Rapids players have been
sidelined through injury, though Pareja is hopeful to
have midfielder Brian Mullan and the strike pairing of
Casey and Omar Cummings available for today’s visit to
Canada’s west coast. Colorado’s long casualty list also
includes centre backs Drew Moor and Marvell Wynne,
as well as Scottish midfielder Jamie Smith.
Those absences have prompted others in Pareja’s
squad to step up and perform. Off-season acquisition
Jaime Castrillon leads Colorado with four goals this
season, while Argentine loan signing Martin Rivero
is the Rapids assist leader with five. Selected 14th
overall in this year’s MLS SuperDraft, midfielder Tony
Cascio is sure to contest the likes of Mattocks and
others for this season’s MLS Rookie of the Year award.
The University of Connecticut product has appeared
in every match for Colorado to this stage, scoring
two goals and recording one assist. Cascio and his
teammates are keen to reverse one trend when they
play Vancouver today. Five of the Rapids’ six defeats
this season have come away from home.

here’s nothing Darren mattocks would
rather do than play soccer. T After all, it’s his passion for the game
that led him to Vancouver from the Jamaican
coastal city of Portmore — with a stop at ohio’s
university of Akron in between.
not the most conventional path, but one
mattocks felt was necessary to pursue his soccer
dream. So naturally, when mattocks found out he
was going to miss up to six weeks at the start of
his first major league Soccer season following
a cooking accident at home, he was filled with
disappointment.
“That was pretty awful,” he said. “I was so
pumped up and focused to play and contribute my
part to the team.”
With mattocks in the hospital recovering from
injury, his mother, lasmine, and girlfriend made
the trip from Jamaica to visit.
Due to VISA issues, lasmine was unable
to attend the mlS SuperDraft in January,
when Vancouver Whitecaps FC selected
mattocks with the second overall pick.
When it comes to significant moments
in mattocks’ life, they don’t get much
bigger than that.
While his mother wasn’t there in
person at the draft, she made up
for it in the biggest way.
After mattocks returned
from injury, lasmine
decided to stay back in
Vancouver and spend
some more time with
her son. And he
returned the

The Jamaican striker sealed Vancouver’s victory in
the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship
against FC Edmonton on May 9, and pointed to his
mother in the stands as he reveled in the glory of
scoring his first professional goal.
It was a moment he will never forget.
“That’s the first time my mom’s seen me play live,”
said the 21-year-old. “For her to see her son score,
that’s really amazing. It gives me goosebumps.”
strength through adversity
The draft, the injury, the goal — turns out, it was
all meant to be.
“I guess you could say that,” said Mattocks, who is
enjoying the company of his mother for the next five
weeks in Vancouver.
It should come as no surprise that Mattocks scored
in his first game back, considering his “phenomenal”
physical attributes, according to Whitecaps FC strength
and conditioning coach Mike Young.
Despite the fact that his injury caused “extreme
de-training,” Mattocks barely missed a beat.
“He came back at roughly 75 per cent and I would
say his physical capacity was already at the level of
most of the guys on the team,” Young said. “So his
75-80 per cent is at a fitness level at or above your
average MLS player.”
BLinK and you’LL Miss hiM
Speed is Mattocks’ best quality— it doesn’t take
an expert to figure that out. His explosiveness was on
full display in his first MLS start May 19 against Seattle,
where he created a number of scoring chances and
did just about everything but score. Those misses now
look to be an anomaly.
In his second MLS start last weekend against
Houston, Mattocks found the back of the net twice and
was named Budweiser Man of the Match. He’s now
scored in consecutive games after recording a late
equalizer against Portland Timbers on May 26.
Mattocks has world-class speed, but what makes
him even more of a threat is his ability to repeat his
sprints without a drop off in performance.
“He’s excellent at that,” Young said. “That’s one
of the defining characteristics of the best players in
the world. They’re not only fast, but they can run fast
repeatedly with minimal rest.”

They also set high standards, and Mattocks is no
exception. Prior to last weekend’s dominant two-goal
performance, the young striker said he was hoping
to score eight to 10 more goals this season. He’s off
to a good start. And if his college numbers are any
indication, he’ll only get better.
During his two years at the University of Akron,
Mattocks scored a remarkable 39 goals in 47 games,
including 21 goals in 22 games last season.
These impressive numbers drew the attention
of professional teams in Denmark and Sweden, but
Mattocks said he thought MLS was the best route
for his development. And although he was surprised
to end up in Vancouver, at this point, he said there’s
nowhere else he would rather be.
“Right now I’m just happy to be with
the ’Caps,” he said. “Hopefully we
make the playoffs and see how far
we can take this thing.”

breakfast from the comforts of their own home. For striker Sébastien Le Toux, nothing is better for breakfast
than “Nutella French”.
Courtney Champion shares with us the delicious recipe from her Cook Like a Champion collection.

toast With straWBerries
Serves 4
Ingredients:
1 cup sliced strawberries
2 teaspoons sugar
Juice of half a lemon
4 thick slices (1 1/2 to 2-inches) bread, such as
challah or soft Italian bread
About 1/2 cup Nutella
1 large egg
Directions:
Combine the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice
in a bowl. Toss to coat and set aside to macerate
at room temperature.
Cut a pocket into each slice of bread, taking
care not to cut all the way through. Fill each slice of
bread with about two tablespoons of Nutella (I totally
eyeballed this part, so this is just an estimate). Heat
a large skillet over medium heat. In a shallow dish or
pie plate, whisk together the egg and milk. Whisk in
the melted butter and vanilla. Add the flour, cinnamon
and salt and whisk until smooth. Working with one or
two pieces at a time, place the filled slices into the egg

Unsalted butter
Powdered sugar for serving
mixture. Soak for 30 to 40 seconds per side, allow
excess to drip off and transfer to a plate. Repeat with
remaining slices.
Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the heated skillet and
swirl to coat. Add the slices in a single layer, taking
care not to crowd the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes,
until light golden brown. Flip and continue cooking an
additional 1-2 minutes. Add more butter as needed
and repeat with remaining slices. Transfer to a plate,
dust with powdered sugar, then top with macerated
strawberries. Serve immediately.
