A LIFELONG
BACKGROUND IN
PHOTOGRAPHY
AND FILM PROCESSING
LETS WINCHESTER
USE HER KEEN
EYE, DISCERNMENT,
AND MASTERY OF
PHOTOSHOP TO DO
SOMETHING REALLY
SPECIAL.
Myrtle Winchester’s magical, potent creations stay with you for a long
time. Something in these images gives the viewer just what s/he
craves. Take that bee on the hyacinth, for instance. Winchester’s artful
enhancement of the veins in the translucent wings, the heightening of
the surface of the petals, and the attention to the “fur” on the bee
itself . . . these are the astounding details of nature that we so easily
miss and are delighted to discover.
A lifelong background in photography and film processing lets
Winchester use her keen eye, discernment, and mastery of Photoshop
to do something really special.
“I developed this style over the past few years using a combination of
Photoshop techniques on original images. I assumed people wouldn’t
like them, so did them just for my own pleasure. On a friend’s advice,
I tentatively offered a couple for sale on Facebook, along with a few
traditional pieces. Testing the water, so to speak. The response was
spectacular, and it’s now my most popular work.”
WINCHESTER’S WORK CAN BE VIEWED AT MYRWINPHOTOGRAPHY.COM AND AT JAVA DOCKS IN MADEIRA PARK.

Winchester came to Pender Harbour in 1986, and her work reveals how firmly her
roots have taken hold. Her forests, boats, seas, and skies dance with a remarkable
life that brings to mind Emily Carr’s quintessentially West Coast work.
“Some people are reminded of Emily Carr paintings, but I see more a mashup of Carr’s
and traditional Mi’qmak styles. The Mi’qmak is typically bright and colourful, with
detailed lines and strong shapes, quite different from native art here. Being from New
Brunswick and having a bit of Mi’qmak blood from my mother, I’m drawn to it.”
While Winchester says that some of her friends give her “grief” about using Photoshop,
there is no arguing the popularity of her images and the mastery required to capture
and transform them.
“The learning curve is steep, but (Photoshop) is amazingly powerful. Don’t let anyone
tell you that you can simply ‘push a button’ to get the result you want; you have to
know what you’re doing, and it takes time to accomplish the magic.”
A groundbreaking collaboration between the Gibsons and Sechelt Rotary
clubs will bring the critically acclaimed play Art to the Gibsons Heritage
Playhouse October 5–21. Art, written by Yasmina Reza and translated by
Christopher Hampton, has been performed internationally, debuting in
Paris on October 28, 1994. The original London cast garnered the talents
of Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, and Ken Stott. Directed by Sally Williams
and produced by Lynn Grossutti, the provocative, funny three-hander is
performed by Richard Austin, Larry Musser, and Norm Blair. The creative
team includes Mardell Vestad, Billie Carroll, and Geran Capewell. Local
artist Christy Sverre has created wry, witty images inspired by Reza’s
three characters, Marc, Serge, and Yvan. Visit the website to participate
CRAWL
IT GETS BIGGER AND BETTER EVERY YEAR. Locals are
proud of this coastwide event that has our towns, lanes, forests,
theatres, galleries, restaurants, and studios laying out warm
welcomes and bustling with creativity. Last year’s visitors have
this marked on their calendars. Many very popular venues
are preparing to wow people yet again, with sixty-three new
venues this year. The fall weather, whether it brings warm
sun, pelting rain, or a dramatic windstorm that knocks out
power, always adds a surprise element. The weekend has
evolved to the point where everyone looks forward to
the zany festivity and real Sunshine Coast hospitality.
And then there’s the art. Everything, everything
under the sun: painting and glass work, ceramic and
sculpture, textiles, fibre, metal, photography, group
and individual exhibits.
Linda Williams, program director, puts all this together
and highlights some changes and additions:
“A biggy is that the Powell River artists are not in
the Roberts Creek Hall, due to the election, and will
be showing at the Gibsons Legion Hall this year. The
Gibsons Public Market is hosting a fibre artist grouping
plus four other mixed media artists . . . including
chocolate (!). Bonniebrook area in Gibsons has many
new artists, including the Bonniebrook Collective—
six artists new to the Crawl. Another collective of new
artists in the Hopkins area includes a combination of an
armourer, potter, photographer, fibre artist, and musician.
The Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club is hosting artwork
from thirty-six artists for the Sechelt Hospital Foundation
Fundraiser. Sunshine Coast Arts Centre is hosting six artists who
have never been in the Crawl before. And there are two artists
in the Rockwood space in Sechelt, and more new artists in the
Halfmoon Bay (almost a “gallery row” on Redrooffs) to Madeira area.”
You might want to read that again; each of these sounds like a mustvisit.
And those are just the new developments!
Luckily the Art Crawl comes with a fabulous comprehensive brochure
and map that will help you plan your experience, whether you’ve got
a couple of hours and one town to cover, or all weekend to get in as
much as you can!
WORDS | NATALIE FINDLAY Riach
Cindy Riach
PEELING BACK THE PAINT
As an artist, one is always in search of the next inspiring colour, texture, element. On a recent adventure
to Alert Bay on Vancouver Island, Cindy Riach found her next creative pursuit as the beauty of the
surroundings captured her heart. The weathered boats that once journeyed out to sea in search of fish
now sit as reminders of the past. Each has developed its own unique and beautiful patina, and Riach
wanted to create that same effect with her paints.
delved into ways of reproducing the beauty time
can have on objects. Using a painting technique called
“sgraffito”—scratching back into the paint surface to
uncover hidden colours and create texture—she has
brought to life the atmosphere of the beautiful old
boats in Alert Bay, just as time, with the salt of the sea
and the force of the sun, has created layers of colours
and textures on those boats. Using her trusty palette
knife, Riach builds colour and texture, then scratches
back into it. She then adds more colour, only to
remove more of it again. Repeating this process over
and over, she brings to life the history of the boats on
her canvas.
The paintings have an aged feeling, as do the boats
that inspire Riach. The colours are deep, rich, and
vibrant. The textures are rough, imperfect, and
mesmerizing. The abstract feeling of the pieces brings
forward distant memories of what used to be. Using
pictures from her trip and the vivid feeling that Alert
Bay has left in her memories, Riach creates beautiful
pieces of art that inspire and enchant.
“THESE ARE MEMORY
PAINTINGS FROM A VISIT
TO NOVA SCOTIA . . .
IT HAD A PROFOUND
IMPACT ON ME.”
Elizabeth A. Evans likes to paint stories. Her haunting and
colourful pieces are full of meaning and really do suggest
tales and places that invite the viewer to walk right into
a narrative. “Place” features strongly in her work, which
is always from memory, not photographs. And so she
communicates to the viewer what stands out most for her
in each place, be it a feeling, a colour, or an imagined tale.
This makes her work both down-to-earth and dream-like.
The Maritime series featured here is a good example.
“These are memory paintings from a visit to Nova Scotia
when I was a girl. The trip are so vivid in my memory that
I have been able to paint these mirror reflection scenes
and many maritime scenes with variations on what I saw
during that trip. It had a profound impact on me and what
I wanted to convey in the paintings. Quiet solitude. Joyful,
soulful, and reflective.”
If Evans’ work strikes a familiar chord it might be because
she was mentored and taught how to paint by Arthur
Lismer, a founder of the Group of Seven.
“My formal training was influenced heavily by Arthur
Lismer, who taught me to paint with a big fat brush. Over
the years that has stuck with me, even when I was doing
very fine high-realism work. The Brickilism paintings
(small bricks of colour) were influenced by the fat brush.
These days I’m doing larger swatches of colour and form
with a larger brush. Arthur is on my shoulder screaming
at me to loosen up the brush strokes and grab a fatter
brush.”
Asked about her collectors, Evans says that we on the
Coast are pretty sophisticated.
“I think most of my collectors tend to like paintings that
touch their soul—works that reach out and make it
impossible for a collector not to own it. Most of my work
is representational, but I’m finding that on the Coast,
collectors are more sophisticated and are able to see the
beauty and meaning in colour, shape, and form. They like
my semi-abstract minimalist works.”
Her upcoming exhibition at One Flower One Leaf Gallery
(October 12–28) in Gibsons will showcase fifty years of
her paintings.
“I THINK MOST OF MY
COLLECTORS TEND TO
LIKE PAINTINGS THE
TOUCH THEIR SOUL–
WORKS THAT REACH
OUT AND MAKE IT
IMPOSSIBLE FOR A
COLLECTOR NOT TO
OWN IT.”
the welcome return of CRS favourites. The repertoire will range
from Bach, Schubert, and Brahms to Beethoven, Bartók, and
Szymanowski. Some works will be familiar to our audience, while
some compositions may well prove to be a discovery.
Our extensive Artists in the Community program features
WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE NEW ambulatory care lobby
at Sechelt Hospital, the first thing that greets you is the welcoming
artwork on the walls. Large, colourful canvases by Sunshine Coast
artists bring calm and interest to a space that, in many hospitals, is
nondescript and plain. “The artwork that graces the walls of Sechelt
Hospital brings a very positive atmosphere for the patients as they
wait for treatment,” says Jennifer Goodwin, a contributing artist.
“Having spent some time in hospital settings this year, I can vouch
for the sense of delight and positivity that art brings to patients as
they wait.”
This lobby gallery is just one example of Sechelt Hospital Foundation’s
Art of Healing, an initiative that brings the enriching power of art
to health care at Sechelt Hospital. Kicking it up a notch, the Art of
Healing’s first annual exhibit and fundraising event will debut during
Art Crawl weekend, featuring thirty-six pieces generously donated
by well-known Sunshine Coast artists. Each piece was specifically
inspired or selected by the artists to convey the healing power of art.
Art Crawl attendees are invited to view the exhibit at the Sunshine
Coast Golf and Country Club. The fundraising event on October 20 will
also centre around the artwork, hosting art collectors and supporters
for a gala evening of food, mingling, and numerous prize draws that
include trips to Paris and New York. Culminating in a lively draw of
all thirty-six donated artworks, the event will see each piece going
home with a $500 art-collector ticket-buyer. Full proceeds from the
evening will go to the Hospital Foundation, directed to the areas of
greatest need at the hospital.
“I’m very honoured to have my work exhibited at this event alongside
many of the Coast’s most respected artists,” says Ruth Rodgers, a
participating artist and event committee member. “I hope that [my
piece’s] eventual owners will enjoy the restful and relaxing mood
of the piece and be transported to their favourite country meadow
location when they look at it.”
within the walls of Sechelt Hospital and reaches into the homes of
THE
VIEW
This issue’s aerial photo by Sky Drone Aerial Photography gives us an unusual view of our distinctive and
intricate waterways. What we see is Gerrans Bay, looking northeast. The foreground is busy with homes
and docks, beautifully surrounded and interlaced with forest. You can see Cecil Hill and Mount Daniel ahead
and a little left. The right foreground is a part of the extensive Francis Peninsula. The islands we see are
Dusenbury and Tranquility Islands and in the distance, the Caren Range.
With so much sweeping nature, the scene is surprisingly cozy. Here is where to find community and natural beauty all at
once. Here is where to boat (kayak and paddle), hike, birdwatch, botanize, or share a beer with neighbours. This latter is
especially appropriate, since the locals call this bay Whiskey Slough, from the time when prohibition in the US made this
an imbibing-friendly haven. If you’d like to see this all from the water and in comfort, give SloCat Harbour Tours a call. It
is part of their regular tour.
Laurent Weiss of Sky Drone Aerial Photography provides low-altitude, high-definition aerial imaging of our fantastic
coast. He says of this shot: “. . . it is close to where I live. Also I wanted to try and see if I could have a panoramic aerial
photo covering over 230 degrees (you see Mount Daniel to the left and the coast running south to the right). This is hard
to do without too much deformation/stretch. Basically I am forever experimenting and learning on the way.”
WHERE LOCAL ART DWELLS
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
Visitors who come across Fresh From the Coast are delighted with the
eclectic assortment of Coasty things. Locals check in regularly to buy
gifts for their off-Coast friends or to find just the right quality objects
to decorate a corner of a room, a garden, or a new suite. Everything is
charming and local: knicks and knacks, birdhouses, beautiful pottery,
jewelry, soap, glass, and so much more.
Karen Weissenborn has been running Fresh From the Coast for
eleven years. She now features more than 150 artisans, all of them
local, independent makers. Sustainability just happens when local
is the focus; there is little in the way of packaging. Most materials,
ingredients, craft, and inspiration come from right here. What you
get is a great cross-section of lovely stuff that reflects our incredible
natural surroundings and the creativity of our community. The store
has grown over the years and is in its fourth location (Trail Avenue,
beside the toy store).
The inventory is ever-changing and always surprising. Some of
the best-selling items are Linda Buckingham’s earthy and intricate
driftwood creations. The recognizable pottery of Jack Olive and Darcy
Margesson is very popular for gifts. And the myriad consumable items
such as soap, teas, chocolate, beeswax candles, beewax wraps, and
bath products sell like hotcakes during the busy Christmas season. On
the walls the artwork of Brett Varney and Anita Lindblom are favourites
with customers. And don’t forget the jewelry.
Weissenborn is proud of the store’s development over the years.
“When I first started, I asked about twenty artisans if they would be
interested in participating. Since then the work has been coming in
unsolicited, and I think the calibre of the work keeps improving! One of
the joys of Fresh is that I never know what will come in.”
SHOOTING
THE RAPIDS
SKOOKUMCHUCK OFFERS AN ENCHANTING 4-KM HIKE TO THE FAMOUS
NARROWS. TALL MOSS-COVERED TREES SURROUND YOU WITH THE
RICH FRAGRANCE OF LUSH GREEN RAINFOREST. THERE IS A FEEL
OF ENCHANTMENT WHILE WALKING THE TRAIL. THE ENERGIES ARE
SUCH THAT TOWARD DUSK YOU ALMOST FEEL AS IF THE TREES ARE
WHISPERING TO YOU. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR, DEPENDING ON THE
SPEED OF YOUR WALK AND WHETHER YOU STOP TO TAKE PHOTOS,
YOU REACH ROLAND POINT. THERE ON A ROCKY OUTCROP YOU CAN
VIEW THE RAPIDS AS WELL AS WIDE EXPANSE OF THE NARROWS.
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY | ALLAN FOREST
32

TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Look up a Skookumchuck tide table if you want to catch the rapids
during their peak. The type of rapid and height varies dramatically depending on the time of day and
month. This photograph was taken during a moment that is termed a large flood tide. Not the biggest
of rapids, but large enough to attract eight enthusiastic kayakers to the scene. There is apparently an
hour’s leeway in time before and after the peak time listed before the rapids begin or end. I arrived at
the Narrows just as the kayakers were making preparations and the rapids began to peak.
Setting my Olympus 4/3 at 1,000 ISO, I chose an 800th of a second at F10 at the fast 10 FPS mode
while using a 75–300mm lens. That enabled me to capture bursts of action with lots of frothing
whitewater rapids. One at a time, the kayakers each entered a lane where a stream of rapids ran near
the shoreline. They positioned themselves at just the right spot, then paddled like crazy to keep from
being swept downstream. When they had had enough, they relinquished their position for the next
kayaker who was lined up to take their turn.
After half an hour, the kayakers were still going strong;150 images later, I decided it was time to reenter
the forest and head back to the car. I had a very satisfying day, having seen and photographed
two contrasting worlds, the calm of the forest and the excitement of whitewater rapids, along with lots
of rainforest moss and the smiling faces of happy kayakers. This was my first time seeing the rapids,
and I didn’t really know what to expect. But I was prepared and am happy with the results, leaving me
with another unique experience to remember.
HEALING. PEACE. INSPIRATION. There’s no one who
doesn’t need a little (a lot, usually) of these in our anxious, distracted,
careworn times. The Sunshine Coast has long been a draw for those
seeking themselves: path and purpose, innate health, and the divine.
The Self Realization Meditation Healing Centre has been in Halfmoon Bay
since 2003 (and before that in Gibsons since 1995), with the objective of
helping others achieve essential healing and peace regardless of belief,
background, race, or income. It is one of five non-profit centres around
the world established by Mata Yogananda.
THE
HEALING
PATH
The centre provides counselling and help with healing as well as ongoing
courses in pure meditation, natural spiritual healing, animal healing,
and weekly transformation Hatha yoga classes. It also aims to help
those in the caring professions maintain their health and balance by
providing workshops. The centre regularly adds courses and offerings
to meet the changing needs of their clients. Popular with locals are the
meditation gatherings available to drop-ins every evening. People who
live on the Coast also take “staycations” or personal retreats to recharge
and contemplate without having to travel. Silent retreats are offered
throughout the year for those who wish to deepen their spiritual practice
with the surprising and powerful practice of quiet.
Kathseva and Andrew Fentiman run the centre in Halfmoon Bay and
warmly welcome visitors from all over. They are seeing more and more
people from Vancouver and western Canada who are booking short stays
to recharge and regroup. Kathseva says that many clients are expressing
feelings of being overwhelmed by work, technology, noise, long hours,
little nature, and financial stresses.
A HALFMOON BAY SANCTUARY
It’s easy for Coasters to forget how increasingly rare and wonderful our
natural setting is. It is also easy to forget that living here can make us
more fun, more serene, better hosts. Kathseva elaborates:
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
“The Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and slower pace have a very
calming effect on people. We notice that after the first day of their stay,
guests are looking and feeling more relaxed and often tell us that they
are ‘feeling more themselves,’ more connected to nature, more aware
of their surroundings, and they notice the quiet and darkness of the
night sky due to the absence of city lights. Guests also comment on how
friendly people on the Coast are: ‘strangers’ offering them rides, the
kindness of the bus drivers and shopkeepers, and the smiles they receive
from people they see out on their walks. The Sunshine Coast does attract
people who are seeking a slower-paced lifestyle, one more in harmony
with their environment and their community—this comes through to
those who visit.”
Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome
• Tired/Red Eyes
• Itchy Eyes
• Stye or chalazion
• Gritty, scratchy, or dry eyes
• Watering or sticky eyes
• Fluctuating or blurry vision
Over-the-counter drops treat the symptoms
they don’t treat the underlying cause.
Natural Ophthalmics Tear Stimulation Drops
support the body’s own responses to dry eyes.
Preservative-free, professional quality, and only
available but from your eye care provider. Safe for
children and pregnant or nursing mothers, these drops
leave your eyes refreshed without rebound redness.
Formulas also available for contact lens wearers.
The leading cause of dry eyes is not due to not producing enough
tears, but producing poor quality tears, where there is an imbalance
of essential oils that form the top layer of tears.
Try Our Re-Balance System!
Re-Balance Cleanser is a synergistic blend formulated with certified
organic botanical Essential Oils (EOs) to nourish the facial skin,
especially the eyelid areas and be an effective anti-microbial cleanser
against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, fungi,
molds and demodex that impact natural healthy tear production. It
offers three different dilutions to enable a gentle restoration of facial
tissue and microbial balance.
Clear & Calm Microdermabrasion Cream
deep cleans pores and neutralizes the
inflammatory action of exposed bacterial cells,
leaving skin bright and smooth.
Deep Hydrating Cream (contains Vitamin E)
continues rebalancing your skin microbiome,
with firming and wrinkle reduction and recognized to
tone, stimulate blood vessels and eliminate excess fatty tissue.
All Natural, Vegan, GMO-free and 94% Certified Organic.
