HRNeptune.com Ella Fitzgerald- The First Lady of Song and a Newport News native by James H. Brown Apr 25, 1917 - Jun 15, 1996 (age 79). Few have been blessed with the musical talent that Ella Fitzgerald possessed. Known as the “Queen of Jazz” Ella was not only blessed with that gift but was known for breaking down barriers. Coming up and having some rough teenage years as a look-out at a Bordello with a Mafia-affiliated numbers runner, she was eventually picked up by the authorities and taken to the “Colored Orphan Asylum” in the Bronx. She was later transferred to another woman’s home and eventually escaped and was living homeless for a time. She made a small living signing on the streets of Harlem before getting her debut on the Apollo at the age of 17! A few years later she won a chance to perform alongside Tiny Bradshaw band at the Harlem Opera House. Despite this small success, it wasn’t until 1938 when her nursery rhyme “A-Tisket, A- Tasket” took off and became a major hit!
