Chowanoke History

Historically, American Indian tribal leaders utilized
customs and traditions to guide the decision making
processes in governing their tribal members. In today’s
modern society, many tribes still incorporate ancient
customs while rendering decisions in their tribal courts.
However, ancient custom is a vague recollection for most
Indian tribes and one that is often necessarily delegated
to culture keepers or the tribe’s elders to revive or retain.
Retaining custom is important in assuring tribal cultural
uniqueness as it is widely recognized that imposing
non-Indian culture has had adverse effects on Indians
across the United States.
American Indians hold contrasting world views, which
rationalizes against trying to superimpose in tribal courts
the views of Anglo courts who utilize an adversarial system
that have resulted in adverse social outcomes for Native
citizens and for using custom and tradition which engages
in and embraces a restorative and harmonious approach
to resolving disputes and conflict. These values were historically
incorporated in Native tradition and were reflected
in their Peacemaker’s Court. Today, tribal courts who
incorporate a Peacemaker’s court in their legal system
acknowledge positive results and experience far less recidivism
than Anglo courts who do not. Tribes have known
since ancient times that utilizing this approach results in
responsibility, restitution, and ultimately restoration for all
parties involved.

mission is to help American
Indians in Northeastern NC
and Southeastern VA. She
currently sits on the council
of the Chowanoke Tribe.
In partnership with another
Chowanoke descendant,
she is currently developing
Chowanoke Reservation for
tribal descendants to gather
and hold cultural events.
