I had requested deferral of making a decision for a couple of weeks pending on site further engineering on Kyle Park back at our extraordinary meeting on August 12, 2017 (minuted), this was seconded, put to the meeting and lost. However, it is great to now see progress in that direction after our board deciding it would be helpful after the reclassification of Denton Park was not desired by a large part of the Hornby community, 84 per cent of submissions against the reclassification, and the hearings panel upon listening to all the concerns from the submitters. The hearings panels recommendation to our Community Board was to not reclassify the Denton Park Recreation Reserve. I understand that it can be frustrating waiting for our desired South West Leisure centre, but it is important to get this project right and acquire all the details and data, as we don’t want problems to occur after any decision-making. I believe it is helpful to foresee any issues and discuss them, to future-proof the facility’s placement and ensure accessibility and parking is of ease for everyone. TESTS: Drilling at Kyle Park, the city council is investigating the park’s suitability for a community mega-centre. I have learned as an elected member representing the Halswell Hornby Riccarton Community Board just how passionate a large part of the Hornby community felt about their green space that was donated to the community by Stanley Denton. This was donated for “outdoor recreation” with a status as a recreation reserve, used largely by sporting groups, leisure activities and the local community at large. I have valued supporting this process and the community through all the stages of this process, learning the value that the Hornby community has with Denton Park and listening to all that contacted me with their concerns, for example traffic concerns, sports clubs, community use, parking and gifting of the park. It was emphasised in an article on September 14, by reporter Ashleigh Monk, regarding a statement by former Mayor Garry Moore “elected representatives needed to ensure their decisions were supported by residents.” I concur with this. I believe we are making positive headway, steady is the progress, and I trust the wait will be worthwhile for all. All the above is my personal opinion from my experience gained while listening to the concerns of residents and sporting groups in the Hornby community and being part of this process as a current Halswell Hornby Riccarton Community Board member. Ara Institute of Canterbury student and Pasifika community relations adviser Reverend Fitifiti Luatua was recognised by early-childcare provider Barnardos on September 14. Barnardos runs the childhood centre on Waterloo Rd. The Ministry of Education appointed Rev Luatua to the Pasifika Advisory Group of the childhood centre in 2015. He was given the role for his engagement with the Pasifika community through his 18 years of church ministry and his work with the Ara Pasifika Trades programme at Woolston and other programmes at Ara. As part of community engagement, Luatua brought Ara civil skills students to construct landscaping and sandpits – which added much needed beauty, benefited the centre and gave students real world experience. The efforts and the contribution of the students was very much appreciated by the community, parents, teachers and children. Building started in April 2016 and the centre was opened on March 2017, run by Barnardos and licensed for 47 children, 10 of which are up to two-year-olds.
