BRISTOL
A Postcard from Bristol
Banksy, Brunel and Berkeley Castle; just three reasons why a stay in Bristol should be on
your schedule! The cathedral city is both a hotbed for new talent and an encyclopedia
of history waiting to hook you in. From the harbourside and Brunel’s iconic SS Great
Britain, through to the Bristol Old Vic (the oldest continuously working theatre in the
English speaking world), and the controversial street artist Banksy, Bristol has so much
to offer visitors, it’s best to stay the week!
23

Put your boots on and kick-start your stay
with the Banksy Walking Tour. Born in
Bristol in 1974, the now world-famous
artist began spray painting the streets of
Bristol in the 1990s. Many of his works,
which now sell for a small fortune, have
been removed from the city but there’s
still a whole day of discovering a Banksy
in Bristol on the walking tour, which
takes in iconic works like the Masked Gorilla
and Well Hung Lover.
By Mojo0306 [CC BY-SA 4.0], from Wikimedia Commons
Just outside of Bristol, Berkeley Castle
has made many an appearance on TV!
Poldark, The Other Boleyn Girl and Father
Ted are just a few of the TV favourites
filmed on location at the stunning
castle. Open from April through to
October, visitors can see rare collections
of furniture, tapestries, paintings and silver
wear. Outside, lovely terraced gardens with
rare plants and a stunning rose display,
flower borders, a lily pond and Elizabeth I’s
bowling green paint a picture garden
enthusiasts will envy!
For TV fans, a trip to BBC Bristol is a must!
From script to screen, visitors discover just
what it takes to get a programme to air, and
may even end up reading the news!
A Postcard from Bristol
Think of Bristol and it’s hard not to think
about the iconic Clifton Suspension
Bridge. Designed by Victorian engineer
Isambard Kingdom Brunel for light horse
drawn traffic, the bridge still meets the
demands of today’s travel, with about
12,000 vehicles crossing each day. With
a visitors centre and Clifton Village and
its eclectic mix of shops, cafes, dining
experiences, picturesque passageways,
gardens and secret hideaways, it’s a great
day out attracting thousands of visitors
each year. While there, make time for Racks
Bar and Kitchen where you can enjoy a gin
tasting master class which gives a great
insight into the different botanicals!
As Halloween is just a few weeks away, the Bristol Haunted and Hidden Walking Tour
is a must! Will the Dwarf Highwayman search you out? Will Daniel Defoe and Oliver
Cromwell make an appearance? Will the ghostly monk make you run from the haunted
cinema? These fun walking tours are held every Friday night starting at the cathedral and
taking in some of the city’s most haunted buildings!
If you’re still on your feet, the Bristol
Pirate Walk is a good all-rounder for the
family. Taking place at Harbourside, the
captivating Pirate Pete takes visitors on
a one-hour journey of discovery! Find
Long John Silver’s treasure chest in the
smugglers cave, uncover Blackbeard’s
lair and visit Treasure Island’s Spy Glass
where press gangs once roamed!
With the Bristol Hippodrome home
to West End musicals and big touring
productions, the Bristol Old Vic
showcasing theatre, comedy, spoken
word and dance, and Tobacco Factory
Theatres and the Redgrave Theatre
producing shows from classics to
contemporary, there is never a dull
moment with live entertainment
available most nights of the week.
Bristol’s Floating Harbour is a vibrant
location for drinks and dining. The
Glassboat Brasserie has stunning
waterside views, an elegant interior and
a sophisticated bistro menu while The
Matthew creates a maritime backdrop
to enjoy traditional fish and chips!
The specialist cider boat The Apple is
a must and the Three Brothers Burgers
has a great selection of craft beers as
well as offering a true American dining
feast! Visitors to the city also have
an excellent choice of distillery and
brewery tours and tastings to enjoy!
And finally, the city is blessed with a
network of waterways and parks which
means that wherever you are, you’re
never normally more than 300 metres
from a green space, and that includes
many of the hotels and B&Bs Bristol has
to offer visitors.
