Chess Club Forming

Amy McDonald, Principal,
John D. McGovern Elementary
Amy McDonald has recently
been welcomed as the principal
of the John D. McGovern Elementary
School, which serves
preschool, Kindergarten and
first-grade students in Medway.
The married Mom of two young
girls, Isabella and Harley, lives in
Hopkinton.
McDonald grew up in upstate
New York in a family of teachers
and nurses.
“I knew at a young age this
profession was what I wanted to
do,” says McDonald, who double
majored in Psychology and Special
Education at Hobart & William
Smith College.
Loving every practicum she
did, McDonald went on to graduate
school at BC, mastering in
Curriculum and Instruction and
student teaching a second-grade
class there. She taught as an art
teacher, a first-grade teacher and
a Kindergarten teacher for over a
decade, receiving her Certificate
of Graduate Study and finding
she loved the leadership role.
“I love to problem solve, to
help people get to a better version
of themselves, and myself, too, so
we can have a better impact on
students,” says McDonald.
McDonald served for two
years as assistant principal and
for another two years as principal
of the large James W. Hennigan
School in Jamaica Plain, followed
by seven years as principal of the
smaller Philbrick Elementary
School in Roslindale.
“It was a very diverse population,
but a smaller school,” says
McDonald.
The principal found herself
living in Hopkinton after she got
married, and after having her
twins in 2016, landed a position
she loved as an assistant principal
at an elementary school in
Ashland before applying for the
Medway position.
“I feel like all my experiences
have led me to be here,” says
McDonald, who says her new
position is everything she’d been
looking for, from elementary
grade Spanish, a strong readers
and writers workshop, and a
strong commitment in the district
to work on social and emotional
learning.
“I loved the sense of community
from this school,” says
McDonald, who says McGovern
struck her as “a special place,
where people really cared about
each other.
I think that one part of my job
is to bring the (McGovern) community
together, to help families
feel connected to our family and
