M is for Medway, a community art project and fundraiser designed to showcase local businesses and organizations and promote cultural engagement. The Cultural Council will distribute 12” paper mache letter “M”s to decorate. Organizations, businesses or individuals can use paint, duct tape, glitter, magazine clippings, photos, crayons, glitter, stickers or whatever inspires them to decorate their M. Interested groups should contact the Medway Cultural Council at misformedway@gmail.com to obtain a letter “M” to decorate. Suggested donations are $20 for non-profit organizations, and $50 for businesses. “Since our local parks are under construction, we thought it would be fun to host a cultural activity to display around town this fall.” stated Cultural Council New England Inc. All participating artists will be entered into a random drawing to win a sundae bar for ten people, valued at $60, from TC Scoops. Millis Garden Club to Feature Pruning Basics for Home Gardener The Millis Garden Club will sponsor “Pruning Basics for the Home Gardener” presented by Gretal Anspach on Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m. in the Roche Bros. Community Room, Millis Public Library. Hospitality begins at 6:30 p.m. Open to the public. Suggested donation: $5. In this program you will learn about the science behind when, how, and why to prune your woody plants. You will also learn how to make the best use of your money by making good choices when determining which plants can be pruned by a home gardener and which require the services of a professional. October 2018 Medway & Millis Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 23 MERIT Haunted Hayride Saturday, October 27 Proceeds to benefit Millis Educational Resource Initiative Team (M.E.R.I.T.) The Millis Educational Resource Initiative Team (M.E.R.I.T.) will be hosting their Annual Haunted Hayride at Tangerini’s Spring Street Farm in Millis on Saturday, October 27st from 4:30 – 10 p.m.. For fifteen years, this annual family friendly event is MERIT’s top fundraiser of the year and helps provide the funds awarded to grant recipients from all three Millis public schools every year. Cost for the event is $10/person. The spooky meter will be low from 4:30 – 6:30 for families with young children looking to enjoy a fun hayride around the fields of Tangerini’s Farm. Please note, though lower on the spooky scale, characters will be dressed in costume, so please use parental discretion. After 6:30, the spooky meter is turned up a notch and a lot of scares and fun are to be found at all our Scary Stations. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Tickets will be on sale at Tangerini’s and Roche Bros. after the first of October. We will also have special ticket sale dates on Saturday, October 13th and 20th at the Millis Public Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For additional information on ticket sales, please check out our Facebook page at facebook. com/MERITmil. All ticket sales are final. There are no rain dates and tickets typically sell out, so be sure to get them before the event! “The MERIT Haunted Hayride at Tangerini’s Farm is a great school-community, familyoriented event that is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The field station volunteers are Millis teachers, coaches, and parents that have a lot of fun scaring the Hayride participants while MERIT volunteers offer concessions for purchase in the greenhouse. It has been wonderful to work with the Tangerini’s year after year. It is the perfect location and we are very grateful for this partnership!” says Theresa Mahoney, MERIT President. The Millis Resource Initiatives Team is a non-profit, state chartered local education fund. Founded in 1991 and run by volunteers (Millis residents) MERIT solicits funds for innovative, curriculum-based programs not typically funded within the regular school budgets. Nearly $300,000 has been granted to enhance the Millis School System curriculum since 1991. MERIT has additional fundraisers throughout the year and is always looking for personal donations, volunteers or corporate sponsors. During the 2017-2018 school year we were able to fund over $45,000 to grant recipients and fund exciting initiatives such as robotics programs and digital learning tools for classrooms– including Osmo and Blue Bots, flexible seating, reading initiative programs, aquaponics labs, film equipment, the start of a virtual reality lab at all three schools and funds to begin the High School Engineering Program – just to name a few!
