The father of two tells them, “You always want to be the one making choices, not having the choice made for you.” He hopes to teach them strategies along the way and steps that they can take to achieve the success moving forward. “Middle schoolers are at that position where they still have that wide range of ability, interests, eagerness to try and learn different things. The great thing, at this point, is they branch off and may tap into something they haven’t necessarily known about themselves. We’re trying to give them the support structure to allow them to take those risks, while at the same time (teaching them) to deal with social nuances and social/emotional learning.” Juelis comes to Medway from North Attleboro, where he most recently served as Middle School principal, having also served as High School Principal and Middle School Assistant Principal for the town. Originally a social studies teacher both in New Jersey and then in Mansfield, from 1998 to 2007, Juelis, who was educated at Union College in New York, first moved into administration as Assistant Principal in Blackstone/Millville. “I think as kids get closer to high school, you start to see an interesting shift. It’s learning how to develop from a 5th grader to an 8th grader, in terms of being more independent, more responsible. As simple as writing homework down every night, learning how to study, how to take a test, then you have the content piece added to it.” In addition to needing support in learning strategies, middle school, children are experiencing new social and emotional dynamics, “getting to be more of an adult; you get wise to the world,” says Juelis. “The great part of middle school is you’re not dealing with everyone at the same time doing the same thing,” says Juelis. He likens this age’s development to a bridge. “Kids all over the bridge are becoming independent learners and thinkers. The challenge is how you get everyone to that end path. I’ve always heard the saying middle school doesn’t count, but my retort to that is – when you go to high school, and it does count, do you want to be prepared, or is that when you want to start learning these strategies? Or, do you already want to have a couple of strategies down?” Juelis talks of teacher teams providing a support structure for students, with blended and personal learning, where students can show they understand materials in a choice of ways. The educator loves “seeing the kids at the end, seeing kids as 6th graders to high school, seeing how they’ve transformed over time. I almost like seeing them say, ‘I can’t do this,’ and then seeing them at the end say, ‘I did this. I did it with help, but I did this.’ Every day, says Juelis, he sees staff interacting with kids at different levels. “The best part of every day is having those constant interactions and moments you can see the kids with that proverbial light bulb, where (staff) see that positive impact they can have on students. I look at (my role) as trying to provide that experience for teachers and students so that they want to come to school because of the different relationships they have and the learning that’s going on.” Church of Christ to Hold Free Community Dinner and Game Night The Church of Christ at 142 Exchange St., Millis will offer a Free Community Dinner and Game Night on Friday, October 19. Dinner is served at 6:30 pm. Following the dinner, we will have a fun night playing board games and sharing conversation and fellowship. All are invited— there will be games for all ages. Feel free to bring family, friends and a favorite game! The event is sponsored by the Men’s Fellowship group and is held in Fellowship Hall at the church. October 2018 Medway & Millis Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 11 Living Healthy October Programs and Events at the Millis Senior Center Cancer: Thriving and Surviving: free six-week workshop for Cancer survivors, their family members, friends and caregivers are ideal participants. This evidencebased program promotes the empowerment of people with cancer to take control of their health and to improve the quality of their lives. The workshop is given 2½ hours once a week for six weeks from Wednesday, October 24th to November 28th – 12 to 2:30 p.m. Each participant will also receive a companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, and a relaxation CD. To register please call Maureen at (508) 376-7051 Grief Support Group: Friday, October 5th, 10:30 a.m.: Six week support group can offer people who are grieving a supportive environment in which to work through some of their grief. Meditation: is the process of gently focusing our attention inwardly. By practicing meditation, it allows us to live more presently, with a deeper focus and awareness in the present moment. We live in a society that many people live reactively and we are experiencing a great of stress. Stress is the root causes of many illnesses. Some of the benefits of meditation include a greater sense of awareness, focus, balance, and creativity. On Friday, October 5th at 10 a.m. we will be offering a free trial class for anyone interested. Classes will continue from Friday, October 12th—Friday, November 23rd for a fee of $3 per class. Senior Photo Identification Card: The Norfolk County Sheriff ’s Office will be here on Wednesday, October 24th from 11:30-12:30 to supply seniors with a secondary form of identification, free of charge. In order to receive this FREE photo ID, seniors will need to provide one of the following: A valid Mass Driver’s License, A valid US Passport, A valid Mass RMV Photo ID.
