THE RETURN OF THE BARBER 

AND THE REAL WET SHAVE 

Whether in Rotterdam, 

Amsterdam, London, Cologne, 

or Dusseldorf, you can 

find them once again – the 

hairdressers who specialize 

in cutting and shaping men's 

beards and hair. Most barber 

shops have a special look, 

which is typical for our times, 

and has never before existed in 

this new form. It is a special 

mix of style elements from the 

1920’s to the 1960’s, paired 

with large tattoos, beards, 

cuffed jeans, and tweed vests. 

The technical level is usually 

top notch and you can get a 

cool beer at many of them – 

but all of them seem to have 

a relaxed atmosphere in which 

one actually enjoys spending 

time. Some customers will 

even wait up to five hours in 

some of the trendier shops! 

A few gems can also be found 

outside of the major cities 

– the barber from the older 

generation who has been in 

business since the 1960’s and 

has not forgotten the old tools, 

hair care products, and their 

use. Paul Kox in Breukelen, 

the “secret pope” of men's 

barbers in the Netherlands, 

is such an original. Maybe 

such a veteran works behind 

an old, yellowed shop display 

in your neighborhood, with 

opening hours on Tuesdays and 

Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 

5:00 p.m. The shaving culture 

also has a few very unusual 

salons which are difficult to 

classify. One such example 

is the Scheersalon of Jeroen 

in Bladel, Netherlands, which 

presents itself in classical, 

simple elegance. 

Many men have a strong desire 

to learn the almost lost art 

of wet shaving with a forged 

razor, and to be able to do it 

themselves. This skill used to 

be passed on quite naturally 

from father to son – it was 

applied on a daily basis. All 

you needed was a belt, ashes, 

and machine oil to strop the 

razor. Today, many look at this 

way of shaving as a dangerous 

and awe-inspiring art, which 

only few have mastered. 

But actually, you just need a 

basic but select knowledge 

about leather, stones, soaps, 

and a little bit of patience 

to enjoy your classic morning 

shave. We have compiled 

this basic knowledge and the 

corresponding products in this 

catalog.

shares with this scene is 

tradition, the strong will to 

achieve perfect craftsmanship, 

and passion for what we do. A 

vital part of this is the ongoing 

communication with other 

experts and aficionados on 

the subject that connects us. 

We have been manufacturing 

straight razors in Solingen, 

Germany since 1869, and they 

continue to be 100% produced 

there. The tree of the Boker 

family has even been registered 

as a trademark since 1674. 

The extensive knowledge and 

skill for producing these unique 

tools is still alive and well in 

our manufactory.

BOKER DAMASCUS STRAIGHT RAZORS 

The Damascus straight razors 

are an absolute highlight in the 

more than 100-year history of 

worldwide renown of the high 

quality straight razors by Boker. 

The special exclusivity comes 

from using powder metallurgical, 

stainless Damascus steel from 

Sweden. In a very technically 

demanding and complex process, 

180 layers of Damascus steel are 

created in a sintering process to 

create the perfect starting material 

for the fine hand-sharpening of 

the blades. The traditional extrahollow 

grind and the exceptionally 

fine edge harmonizes the beautiful, 

extraordinarily fine grain of the 

natural Damascus pattern. The 

5/8" wide blade has a two-sided 

serration for a safe grip, and 

like all traditionally made, high 

quality Solingen straight razors, 

boasts a historic blade stamp 

which is punched into the tang 

of the blade before tempering. 

Boker Damascus straight razors 

are completely handmade in 

the Boker knife manufactory in 

Solingen, in a 150-step process. 

All razors come complete with 

a certificate of authenticity in a 

refined presentation display, serial 

numbered.

The dark color and fine grain of 

the refined wood emphasize the 

elegance and noble look of this 

unique piece of artistry. This 

valuable fine wood is very dense, 

very sturdy, and highly resistant to 

aging, which makes it a preferred 

choice not only for decorative 

effect. As an additional highlight, 

the historic Boker tree logo is 

expertly inserted into the handle 

scales, a craft that is hard to find

The Boker knife manufactory is 

known for processing innovative 

materials. This modern straight 

razor combines the stainless, 

powder metallurgical Damascus 

blade, made from 180 layers, 

with handle scales made from 

genuine carbon fiber. This high 

tech handle is CNC-milled from 

a solid piece. The fine grain 

of the Damascus pattern creates 

a harmonic interplay with the 

lightweight, manually contoured 

carbon handle.

COUNT VON BERG 

Not far from the company 

headquarters of the Boker 

Manufactory in Solingen, we find 

the hallmark of the Bergisches 

Land region, the castle Burg 

an der Wupper. It is also 

one of the largest castles in 

western Germany, and the 

largest reconstructed castle in 

North Rhine-Westphalia. The 

famous history of Castle Burg is 

inseparably linked to the Duchy 

Berg and the Count of Berg 

(Haus Berg, 1068-1225). On this 

occasion we decided to dedicate 

a series of straight razors to 

the three counts of Berg, which 

symbolizes parts of their lives. 

This tribute is reminiscent of 

the remarkable property and 

influence of the counts with 

impressive adornments made 

from 24-karat gold. 

Adolf II, Count of Berg, built 

the new castle ("Novus Mons," 

today known as Castle Burg) at 

the Wupper, erected on top of 

a preceding fortress from the 

10th century. The influence 

and wealth of Count Adolf II of 

Berg in the Rheinland-Westfalen 

region was tremendous. In those 

days, it was commonplace to 

split the inheritance among the 

six sons of Adolf. However, 

this represented a problem for 

the house of Berg, since this 

division would reduce the value 

and cost the Berg dynasty its 

influence. Since his eldest son 

(also Adolf) had already died 

in 1148 at Damascus during 

the Second Crusade, his sons 

Friedrich and Bruno entered into 

the clergy, and his youngest 

son Adolf was excluded from 

the inheritance due to his young 

age. In 1160, the Bergish realm 

was split between Adolf's sons 

Everhard and Engelbert. 

EVERHARD, COUNT OF 

THE MARK Everhard, older 

than Engelbert, received the 

Westphalian possessions with 

the castles Altena and Hövel, 

and the abbeys Werden, Essen, 

and Cappenberg. This shows 

that for Adolf II, the Rhine- 

Franconia possessions were 

likely of lower value compared 

to the Westphalian. Everhard 

founded the Altenaer line - 

his descendants later called 

themselves Counts of the Mark. 

ADOLF III, COUNT OF BERG 

Engelbert I of Berg received 

the Rhine-Franconia inheritance 

and continued the name Berg 

in his family. The center of 

his domain was the castle Burg 

an der Wupper, which was 

built by his father (Adolf II). 

Engelbert I died in 1189 during 

the Third Crusade. His oldest 

son, Adolf III, succeeded him 

as Count of Berg. His reign fell 

on a period of warring conflicts, 

which led to his participation in 

the Crusades. Adolf went to 

the Holy Land during the Fifth 

Crusade in 1218, and died from 

an epidemic on August 7 of 

that year, as Commander of the 

Rhine and Friesian siege troops 

at Damiette in the Nile Delta. 

He had no son, therefore the 

Altena-Berg branch ceased. 

ENGELBERT II, COUNT OF 

BERG 

After the death of Adolf III, the 

House of Limburg, into which 

Adolf's daughter Irmgard had 

married, staked its claim to the 

entire Bergish estate. While 

the daughter of Adolf III was 

entitled to an inheritance even 

in that time, Engelbert II, the 

brother of Adolf III, claimed 

the inheritance for himself. 

The resulting dispute was not 

settled in a legal process, but by 

violence over the course of two 

feuds. Engelbert rejected the 

Limburg claim through the force 

of arms and took over the rule 

of the County Berg as Engelbert 

II. Engelbert II, Count of Berg, 

later called "The Holy," was also 

known as Engelbert I, Archbishop 

of Cologne. With his murder in 

1225, the Bergish counts in this 

line came to an end, as the male 

line of the Bergish counts ended 

with the death of Engelbert II. 

As a result, Berg went to House 

Limburg, which was thus finally 

able to assert its inheritance 

claim.

COUNT EVERHARD 

The strikingly ground and gilded 

back of the polished 5/8" blade 

is an absolute highlight in the 

Boker selection. The elements of 

the blade etching, adorned with 

24-karat gold, are reminiscent of 

the realm of Count Everhard of 

the Mark, with the coat of arms 

of the city of Hamm, which is 

derived from House Berg. The 

tang as well as the blade with 

rounded head, features a doublesided 

serration. Delivered in a

COUNT ADOLF III 

This extraordinary 6/8" straight 

razor symbolizes the death of 

Adolf III, Count of Berg, during 

the Fifth Crusade in Egypt. The 

end of the polished blade is 

lined by a French head, which 

underlines the special elegance 

of this piece. Hand selected stag 

scales with additional decorative 

pins, the elaborate grind of 

the blade back, and the partial 

gilding (24-karat) are just a few 

of its highlights. Delivered in a 

refined presentation display with 

certificate of authenticity and 

individual serial number. 

COUNT ENGELBERT II 

The last Count of Berg, Engelbert 

II, was also called Engelbert I, 

Archbishop of Cologne. When he 

was murdered, Berg went to the 

House of Limburg. This splendid 7/8" 

straight razor shows Engelbert as 

Archbishop of Cologne. The graded 

head of this blade (ground until it 

makes the right sound), is made 

from the finest Solingen straight 

razor steel. The curved blade back 

in combination with a handle made 

from the finest stag highlight its 

great elegance and unique quality.

Forging and Hardening 

The forge and hardening shop for 

our carbon steel straight razors 

uses the proven silver steel, which 

is very tough and elastic, despite 

its excellent edge retention. The 

raw material is a rod which is cut 

to length, creating the so called 

splitter. The splitter is heated until 

red hot, and drop forged with a 

1,500 lb rammer. Next, the slugs 

have to cool to 392°F for two days 

in an annealing furnace. Then the 

excess material created during the 

forging process, the "wings," are 

trimmed. The slugs are once again 

straightened in a 200-ton press, 

before going to the hardening shop. 

In the hardening shop, the slugs are 

hardened and annealed in order to 

achieve the optimal combination of 

edge retention and elasticity for the 

material. 

In the Grinding Shop - Production 

of the Extra Hollow Grind with Belly 

In the grinding shop, the extra 

hollow grind with belly is created. 

The slugs are ground in 18 individual 

steps, from rough grinding, to 

milling, to glazing. Between each 

step, the blades are cleaned, 

controlled, and straightened when 

necessary. We exclusively grind our 

straight razor blades extra hollow 

with belly. The belly lies in front 

of the strong hollow section and 

just behind the edge, which has 

a small hollow grind itself. The 

belly is the only way in which the 

blades can be ground out so thin 

and still retain sufficient stiffness, 

despite their elasticity. There are 

only a handful of the best and most 

specialized grinders in the world 

that have mastered this ultimate 

skill in straight razor production. 

Depending on the model, the last 

step is the matting or polishing of 

the blade. 

Finally, the blade is honed by hand 

on several bench whetstones with 

increasingly finer grits. After the 

final stropping, the sharpness of the 

straight razor is tested on a freely 

suspended human hair. 

In the Scales Department 

The scales department manually 

affixes nickel silver pins, washers, 

and spacers to the blades. Wood 

and stag require special dexterity, 

as these natural materials can tear 

when too much pressure is applied. 

Widths and Heads 

The shapes of straight razors are 

mainly determined by national 

and local traditions and personal 

preferences. However, the different 

shapes have different benefits. The 

widths of the blades are given in 

inches. An 8/8" blade is one inch 

wide, a 4/8" blade half an inch wide. 

The 5/8" blade is the most common

width. Below 4/8", the blades are 

used mainly by hairdressers to shave 

the neck, or for contouring. A wide 

blade glides over the skin more 

steadily, due to its weight, and can 

take on more soap and beard hairs 

before having to be wiped. Narrow 

blades are better for working on 

inside curves and contouring. There 

are various point/head shapes as 

well - the rounded point, the straight 

point, the French point, and the 

Spanish point. The round point is 

the easiest to handle. It is thus very 

suitable for beginners. The defined 

edges of the other heads provide 

benefits for the precise creation of 

contours.

Waldorf. As we did more than 

100 years ago, we use a coat 

of genuine 24-karat gold. The 

gilding not only provides a special 

accent for this refined straight 

razor, but also offers additional 

corrosion protection for the 

non-stainless carbon steel (with 

especially high edge retention), 

which remains the first choice for 

high quality straight razors due to 

its extremely fine structure. In 

many painstaking steps, the blade 

is ground extra hollow with belly,

BOKER EDELWEISS 

The Edelweiss straight razor line 

has been a strong component of 

the historic Boker straight razor 

production since the 1920's. 

Even today a few lucky collectors 

might still have like-new straight 

razor from this line, from years 

ago. The elaborately decorated 

Edelweiss lettering in the nickel 

silver inlay is inserted by hand into 

the high quality synthetic handle, 

and complements the classic ivory 

look. The original blade etching on 

the partially polished blade of this 

knife give it its special character. 

Like the historic models, the tang is 

serrated on the top, and the blade 

is adorned with the classic etch. 

The third decorative pin gives the 

handle additional stability, while 

keeping with the original design. 

As with all straight razors from the 

Boker knife manufactory, the blade

For the first time since the 1920's, 

this reissue of the Edelweiss 

straight razor is offered with a 6/8" 

blade, as experienced users often 

prefer greater blade widths than 

4/8" and 5/8". In addition to the 

greater width and weight, there 

are purely functional reasons for 

the use of a 6/8" blade, as it can 

pick up and hold more foam during 

the shave. The blade width also 

emphasizes the beautiful historic

BARBER STORY: PAUL KOX 

The barber shop scene in the 

Netherlands has taken the lead in 

Europe. In metropolitan areas like 

Rotterdam and Amsterdam, men 

sometimes wait for up to five hours 

for a haircut or a shave. On the other 

hand, these shops offer cool beer, 

good coffee, good company, and at 

the end a professional, old-school 

haircut in an earthy ambience. Almost 

all of the trendy shops have one 

thing in common – between all the 

posters of old pomade brands and 

autographed pictures of Clark Gable 

and Johnny Cash, somewhere there 

is an unassuming picture they took 

themselves. It always features the 

same down to earth older gentleman 

with a humorous look on his face and 

a short gray beard, together with the 

owner or the team of the respective 

LIMITED EditioN 

barber shop. This man is Paul Kox, 

the “secret pope” of men's barbers in 

the Netherlands. “The Godfather of 

the shave,” as he was referred to in a 

historic magazine. 

Cutting and shaving truly are in his 

blood - if he didn't inherit it in his 

genes, then probably from hair tonic 

and aftershave. His father, Paul Kox 

Sr., had taken over a barber shop 

in Utrecht in 1934, and Paul began 

helping him run the shop at the age 

of 14. An unheard laugh reverberates 

in almost every one of his words, and 

punctuates each of his sentences. 

When you meet him, you can feel that 

this is someone who loves his craft, 

and interacting with customers. In the 

end, Paul and his brother John took 

over the shop from their father, with 

whom they moved from Utrecht to 

Breukelen in the 1970’s. 

The old shop in Breukelen's 

Winkelcentrum Noord had closed its 

doors in the meantime, but Paul could 

not quit the business. He simply 

opened his doors to customers again 

just 200 meters away, in his own 

apartment. His website, "The Dutch 

Shaving Shop," has made this shop 

into a small tourist attraction, visited 

by Dutch, Germans, and even some 

from further away (e.g. Australians). 

You get the impression that you can 

find everything here that has ever 

been associated with men's haircuts 

and beards that is no longer on the 

market - including both tools and hair 

products. 

His decades of experience as a 

lover and restorer of antique straight 

razors have given Paul Kox very 

specific ideas for the creation of his 

very own special model. The only 

blade he would consider was a 7/8" 

version with negative blade etching 

on a partially polished blade, which 

harmonizes perfectly with the hand 

selected horn scales.

is reminiscent of English straight 

razors from the 19th century. The 

hefty 7/8" blade with French head 

is adorned with an elaborate, wide

impression of a regular "shaving 

axe," the blade is ground extra 

hollow with belly in our manufactory. 

The genuine, natural horn material 

underlines the sturdy character 

and subtle elegance of this piece.

SCHWARZGOLD - THE LEGEND 

We wanted to pay homage to 

the extraordinary racing mare, 

"Schwarzgold," with this elegant 

new straight razor. The Schwarzgold 

(Black Gold) 1937 - 1950 features 

black Ruthenium coating on a base 

of a complete 24-karat gilding. 

Schwarzgold was born in 1937 at 

the stud farm Schlenderhahn as the 

daughter of the stallion "Alchimist" 

and the broodmare "Schwarzliesel." 

Schwarzgold was an exceptional 

horse in every respect. 

Contemporary sports lovers 

called the English thoroughbred a 

"galloping machine," "miracle mare," 

and "super horse." In 1940, she 

won the Diana prize with 6 lengths, 

and the German Derby in the same 

year with a legendary 10 lengths. 

The classic Kissaszony race was 

named after her the following year. 

Despite this superior and hitherto 

unknown superiority, it is believed 

that Schwarzgold was never pushed 

to the limit, meaning that she 

actually always galloped short of 

her true potential. The reason for 

this (and another fascinating fact 

that gave rise to the legend) was 

the difficult character of the mare. 

Her trainer George Arnull prohibited 

any use of the otherwise common 

bridle during training and during 

races. Everything Schwarzgold did, 

she did of her own will. Add to that 

the fact that Schwarzgold could 

only be used on sand since it was 

impossible to control her on grass. 

The specter of the NS regime 

hovered over every victory of 

Schwarzgold. Waldemar von 

Oppenheim, the owner of the 

stud farm Schlenderhahn and 

thus the owner of Schwarzgold, 

was expropriated shortly after the 

victories. This put an end to any 

international career Schwarzgold 

might have had. As a broodmare, 

Schwarzgold gave birth to two 

foals. One of the two foals, 

"Schwarzblaurot," continued the 

Schwarzgold line, which still breeds 

winners to this day.

SHAVING WITH A FORGED BLADE 

I. Preparation of Skin and 

Beard hair 

Before shaving, skin and 

beard hair must be prepared 

carefully. This saves both 

the skin and the blade at the 

same time. For this purpose, 

it is best to shave right after 

a hot shower or apply a hot, 

wet towel to one's face for 

several minutes. Then splash 

the skin with warm water. 

If desired, the skin can also 

be treated with shaving oil 

before the water. Next, apply 

the thickly beaten foam with 

the brush. The soap should be 

left on for at least 2 minutes. 

II. Preparing the Razor 

While the shaving soap 

softens the beard, there is 

enough time to strop the 

straight razor, as described 

in the chapter "Stropping & 

Care" (see page 45), on a 

suspended or mounted strop. 

III. Shaving with the Grain 

It may be necessary now to 

re-apply soap with the wet 

brush. The foam has to be 

kept wet for the duration of 

the entire shave. The handle 

of the razor is folded back so 

that the blade is exposed and 

forms roughly a right angle 

with the handle. The handle is 

wedged between middle and 

ring finger and points away 

from the back of the hand. 

Now push the blade over the 

skin along the grain – the 

direction in which the beard 

grows – with gentle pressure. 

The angle should lie between 

20° and 45°, the exact value 

depends on feeling and 

experience. Beginners should 

first shave the “easy” parts, 

like cheeks, and shave the rest 

of their face with the shaving 

method they have used up to 

now. With more practice and 

skill, they can slowly expand 

the shave to the other areas of 

the face. 

CAUTION: The elbow stands 

wide apart and not in the center 

of your own attention. If you 

bump into something with the 

elbow you will often get a 

painful cut. 

IV. Shaving Against the Grain 

After shaving with the grain, 

you can change the shaving 

direction to against the grain 

for a deeper and more thorough 

shave if desired, and if your 

skin can handle it. To do so, 

wet the skin again and apply 

soap. 

V. After Care of Skin and 

Razor 

After the shave, first rinse 

skin with cold, clear water. 

This closes the pores of the 

skin and any small cuts. The 

razor is dried and oiled as 

described in the chapter “Care 

& Stropping” (see page 44). 

Depending on your preference, 

you can apply an aftershave or 

facial lotion.

THE STAINLESS STRAIGHT RAZOR 

 

Many straight razor aficionados 

and users unfairly look at 

stainless steel straight razors 

as second class. But the 

differences to non-stainless 

carbon or standard steel can be 

minimized by the right choice 

of steel and optimal thermal 

treatment by the manufacturer, 

and even a few specific benefits 

achieved. 

According to the Deutsche 

Industrienorm (DIN), steel 

may be labeled "stainless" if 

it contains at least 10.5 % 

chrome. Even a steel labeled 

"stainless" can rust if it is used 

improperly. Improper use in this 

sense would be, for instance, 

leaving fruit acids on the blade 

after use. However, dry wiping 

the knife is sufficient in most 

cases to prevent the formation 

of corrosion. 

Experts outside of retail thus 

usually (correctly) speak of 

"rust resistant" steel. For the 

sake of accuracy, we will use 

this term going forward. In 

order to get a rust resistant 

blade, the addition of chrome 

in the alloy is necessary more 

than anything. 

Chrome also has the property 

of making the structure of 

the steel coarser, sometimes 

significantly so. This is not 

really wanted for a cut under 

pressure, as required by a 

wet shave. The difference 

can be seen under a scanning 

electron microscope and looks 

dramatic, but can hardly be felt 

in practical use. In return, you 

get the invaluable benefit of 

rust resistance. 

One limitation is that straight 

razors with rust resistant steel 

are somewhat unsuitable 

for beginners. Due to the 

fact that rust resistant steel 

is comparatively more brittle, 

it reacts worse to wear and 

deformation. Even if rust 

resistant blades can be 

similarly sharpened overall, the 

stropping and grinding requires 

a bit more practice. 

Rust resistant straight razor 

blades achieve their full 

potential if they are pushed 

over the skin with a very 

slight offset, i.e., sliding 

sideways ever so slightly. The 

minimally coarser edge then 

develops a microscopic sawing 

action. However, only very 

experienced users should apply 

this technique since it requires 

lots of practice to master. 

In conclusion, we can 

recommend acquiring a rust 

resistant straight razor to 

practiced users for traveling or 

everyday use when in a hurry.

CARE & STROPPING OF STRAIGHT RAZORS 

Caring for a straight razor mainly 

entails preserving the razor's edge 

and protecting it from corrosion. 

The sharpness of the razor mainly 

comes from regular "stropping" on 

linen and untreated leather and, 

after a while, on leather treated 

with a grinding paste. This requires 

a bit of practice but can be learned 

quickly. While with a pocket or 

kitchen knife, the difficulty lies in 

maintaining the correct angle, the 

geometry of the straight razor helps 

us a lot in this respect. The precisely 

balanced ratio of the very thick back 

of the blade to the whisper-thin 

edge ensures that you automatically 

get the right angle on the edge 

when the back touches the leather 

strop (see fig. 1).

First, touch the back to the leather 

and then carefully move the edge 

to touch the strop. Now pull the 

straight razor with slight pressure in 

the direction of the back (away from 

the edge) across the entire length 

of the strop. While doing so, move 

the razor slightly diagonally across 

the leather. This way you can cover 

the entire length of the edge with 

the leather. The back and the edge 

must be in constant contact with 

the strop (see fig. 2).

It is very important to flip the razor 

over its back when you reach the 

end of the strop. UNDER NO 

CIRCUMSTANCE should you flip 

the straight razor over the edge – 

this would round off the edge again, 

i.e. blunt it (see fig. 3).

The untreated leather does not 

remove material from the edge, i.e., 

it does not sharpen the razor in the 

usual sense. You can image the 

burr of the edge microscopically like 

a comb whose teeth are bent in all 

directions after shaving. The strop 

realigns these teeth into an even 

burr. If available, one should use 

the linen side in exactly the same 

manner as the leather strop before 

stropping. 

The fiber of the linen is soft, the 

mesh of the textile, however, is 

rough. This allows the linen to grip 

the burr and align it. The weave of 

the textile catches dirt and loose 

steel particles which could damage 

the sensitive edge when pressed 

against the strop. The final use of the 

strop makes the resulting edge finer. 

You should strop the razor BEFORE, 

and not AFTER shaving. Steel has 

a certain level of self-healing power, 

or “memory.” After stress, the burr 

slowly and partially stands itself up 

again. If you violently rip the burr 

up with the strop immediately after 

shaving, this stresses the material, 

which shortens the life expectancy 

of the burr and, in the long run, of 

the razor. The razor should rest for 

at least 24 hours after the shave 

– but 48 hours or more is ideal, 

so if you shave every day, you 

should own at least two straight 

razors. Our grandfathers therefore 

often had sets for the entire week, 

containing 7 razors. 

If the cutting performance of the 

razor decreases over time despite 

regular stropping, the razor should 

be stropped on a second strop 

treated with special red grinding 

paste. This process actually does 

remove a minute amount of steel 

from the blade. It is not that easy 

to answer the obvious question of 

after how many shaves this should 

be done, as every beard is different. 

Many men only shave partially and 

contour their beards – the stress on 

the blade is different in each case. 

The user should strop with paste 

when the razor begins to pinch 

when shaving. 

After stropping with paste, you 

should clean the blade thoroughly, 

and strop it once more on untreated 

leather. In order to protect it from 

corrosion, dry the blade carefully 

and thoroughly after shaving, and 

then oil it with an acid-free, viscous 

oil. Camellia oil has proven to be 

excellent for this purpose (see page 

44).

SHARPENING OF STRAIGHT RAZORS 

If you love your razor, you will want 

to be able to care for it yourself. 

This also includes sharpening it 

on the whetstone. The edge 

slowly becomes rounded due 

to regular stropping. This is 

intentional up to a certain point. 

However, at some point the angle 

of the edge becomes too steep 

and has to be ground flat again 

using a whetstone. Grinding also 

becomes necessary if the edge 

was damaged due to unintentional 

bumping, falls, or rust due to 

improper storage. 

We have compiled a small guideline 

for stones and sharpening. A 

grinding material or abrasive 

is defined by two parameters. 

One parameter is grit, the other 

binding. The grit states how fine 

or coarse the structure of the 

stone is. The coarser the grit, the 

more steel the stone removes and 

the faster it works. In synthetic 

stones, the grit is determined in 

production by using corresponding 

sieves. In natural stones, the grit 

can only be stated approximately. 

The standard commercial measure 

is JIS (Japanese Industrial 

Standard). The European FEPA 

standard is almost exclusively 

used in industrial applications. 

The stones used for straight razors 

should be fine. 

Opinions vary on what exact 

grit should be used for synthetic 

stones for the final grind. For 

straight razors, we only use and 

deal with proven traditional natural 

stones whose grit corresponds to 

4000 to 10000 JIS.

The binding states how strongly 

the grit, the actual grinding hard 

particles, are bound to each other. 

The grinding particles blunt over 

time and break out of the stone. 

This allows the stone to remain 

sharp over time. The softer 

the binding, the faster the stone 

works and the faster it wears. 

There are no standard industry 

and retail indicators for binding. 

ATTENTION! Straight razors are 

never ground on dry stones. The 

natural stone "Belgian Brocken" 

(Fr.: Coticule) is used with water. 

Its very soft binding creates a 

fine grinding mud over which the 

blade glides. American Arkansas 

stones, also natural stones, are 

used exclusively with a special 

grinding oil. These stones have 

a very hard binding and basically 

don’t wear at all. 

Similar to stropping, during 

grinding, first carefully place the 

back and then the edge on the 

stone. However, in contrast to 

stropping, do not pull away from 

the edge but rather push into the 

edge. To do so, place three or 

four fingers on the back of the 

blade and push the razor across 

the stone with light pressure in 

the direction of the edge. If the 

blade is positioned correctly, the 

water on the Belgian Brocken 

or the oil on the Arkansas stone 

forms a small wave in front of the 

edge. If the back is decorated 

with gilding, etching, or an 

engraving, you should cover it 

with thin insulating tape to avoid 

grinding off the decoration. 

Once the straight razor has been 

sharpened sufficiently, strop it 

on a belt treated with paste, and 

finally on an untreated strop.

BOKER SOAPS 

Everyone can imagine intuitively 

or has already experienced that a 

wet shave without soap or oil is 

practically impossible, or at the 

very least torture for skin and 

razor. Nobody really thinks about 

how the soap actually works. 

Soap mainly has three functions 

in wet shaving. The first and 

most important is to soak the 

beard hairs to make it easier to 

cut. The tensides in the soap 

emulsify fats, which glue the 

scales of the cuticle – the scaly 

layer of the hair – and opens 

them. This allows water and 

soap to enter into the hair and 

soften it. As a result, the scales 

of the beard hairs, which open 

to the side, stand up. This way 

the cortex – the fiber stem of 

the hair – gives the straight razor 

the ideal place to “attack.” You 

should let the dense foam of the 

soap act for at least two minutes. 

The foam has to be kept wet for 

the duration of the entire shave. 

Re-apply soap as necessary. 

The second characteristic of the 

soap is that it lets the blade 

slide over the skin easier. And 

finally, the soap provides an 

optical guideline to see what 

part of the face has already 

been shaved. It also helps mark 

off contours of partial beards 

by drawing lines into the foam 

on the face. After the shave, 

soap residues should be washed 

from the skin with cold, clear 

water. The cold water shrinks 

the pores of the skin and closes 

any small cuts. Whether to use 

an aftershave or lotion after this 

is a question of taste and skin 

type. 

Quality attributes of shaving 

soaps are that they effectively 

soften the hair and leave the skin 

free of irritation and tension after 

the shave. For this purpose, we 

offer two outstanding shaving 

soaps on two different bases. 

Those who like it "old school" 

will use soap based on beef 

tallow, which is what our great 

grandfathers used. For this 

soap we chose the classic male 

fragrance, TOBACCO. 

Those who reject the use of 

animal products on principle will 

prefer our shaving soap based on 

herbal lauric oil. We carry this 

soap with the traditional, warm 

SANDALWOOD fragrance. 

Apart from a minimum 

natural color difference in the 

uncolored soaps, both products 

are basically identical in use 

and attributes. Shaving soap 

can also be foamed by hand if 

necessary. However, the shave 

becomes more comfortable and 

authentic only when you use a 

porcelain cup. The porcelain 

cup should be taller than the 

piece of soap, in order to guide 

the brush and prevent the soap 

from running over the side. The 

cup should also provide a safe 

grip, even with wet or soapy 

hands.
