Bit fish in a little pond
You've guesssed it, the Oxenhams were relatively
big fish in this part of the world (South Zeal, South
Tawton). The Oxenham Arms was once owned
by - you've guessed it, a member of the Oxenham
family, who was something of a legend. He was
Drake's first captain who met an unfortunate
end, being hanged as a pirate after a daring raid
in Panama.
Wyke Monument (below) dated 1592, dressed
in armour - it's John "Warrior" Wykes, lying on a
granite ashlar chest tomb with a Beerstone tester
carried on Ionic columns.
