Term 4 Newsletter No. 39 Right Time... Right Place... Right Attitude 02 DECEMBER 2010
This is the final newsletter for 2010. It gives me an
opportunity to offer a final reflection on the year. It also
allows me to set out some of the areas of growth that we
achieved and some of the areas that still require more.
In my first year as Rector, I have found the task to be very
challenging and ultimately very rewarding. There have been
times where I have felt like we can achieve anything and other
times where I feel we can do nothing right.
This is what being part of humanity is all about. There are the
ups and downs that accompany us all and there are plenty of
times when we feel like we have been knocked down. What
has been evident throughout the year is that there are many
people who have real pride, ownership and even love for this
College and really value being a part of the community.
I sincerely believe that we learn most when we have made
mistakes and I can assure you that I have learned a lot in my
first year. I know that there are things I thought I would be
good at, that I was not quite as good and equally there were
things I thought I would really struggle with, that were not
quite as hard as I had imagined.
The reputation that our College enjoys is born out of a respect
of where we have come from and is not characterised by
arrogance. We must be humble and grateful for all of the
opportunities that we have and I believe that in 2010 we
achieved that.
I would genuinely like to thank all of those community
members who made a contribution during 2010. The Oblates,
Staff, Families and Students once again worked well together.
There are of course areas that continue to require
improvement. We are constantly reminded about reaching
out to the most abandoned and rejected in our world. It
requires us to ask why people are in poverty or depression
and look for creative ways to alleviate that.
Our teaching staff are constantly seeking improvement in
themselves and the way they approach the profession of
teaching. They regularly reflect on new ways of engaging with
the boys and 2011 will see that develop further. We will be
deploying new Netbook computers across the curriculum in a
variety of new and innovative ways with the fastest wireless
internet connections in Australia. Our IT Team have helped
equip Mazenod with state of the art hardware for all in the
community to benefit from.
Our students will need to continue to improve in the areas of
uniform, hair-styles and punctuality. These areas can be
summed up by the maxim of a wise, holy and loyal Oblate, Fr
Don Hughes O.M.I. where he says: “Right Time, Right Place
and Right Attitude”. This will be one of the major initiatives
that the College will try and promote in 2011 and it begins on
the first day back. It will be important for this to be one of our
aims.
I would also like to encourage as many families as possible to
be involved in the Fathers’ Association and Mothers’ Auxiliary.
It is at these meetings that real and meaningful dialogue
between the College and Parents can take place and I am
hoping that 2011 will see the numbers continue to improve.
For the next section of the Newsletter I would like to highlight an
outstanding achievement that occurred on Tuesday 30 th November.
Our Junior and Senior Teams were both competing in the National
Chess Championships at Monash University. Both of our Teams had
qualified and we were hoping for a top 10 finish.
Our Senior Team finished in 7 th place overall. This is a significant result
that demonstrates the hard work and dedication of the team.
The Juniors were able to achieve our highest ever result in a Chess
National Championship. We were the highest ranked school in
Australia and came a close second to a College called Somerville
Intermediate from New Zealand. The team of Wilson Ngieng, Vincent
Ngo, Alex Biviano, Julian Wu and Gia Hy Truong achieved this fantastic
result. I have previously written at length on the value of Chess, so I
will not repeat it again. However, we can all be justifiably proud of the
achievements of the boys. Each of the team members have been part
of the Chess Programme since Year 7 and have represented us well. I
thank all involved in the preparation.
Next week, our Schoolies Alternative Programme will head to Beijing
to work with disabled and terminally ill infants. The 18 members of
our group will take your blessings and prayers to the mission in China.
We have had lessons on holding, burping and changing babies. We will
write a more comprehensive report upon our return. I encourage you
to check out the Oblate website on www.oblate.com.au in the MAMI
(Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate) section for ways that
you can be supportive.
Our sporting commitments have nearly finished for the year with the
ACC Teams experiencing great success. The boys in Years 8, 9 and 10
have all won the overall Aggregate Championships and this is a first in
our sporting history. I congratulate each and every student and staff
member who contributed to the overall programme and encourage
them even more to be involved next year as we branch out into the
new sport of Badminton. I am sure that this sport will receive great
support from within our community and I look forward to seeing
Mazenod’s involvement.
The next big sporting event to be held is the National Volleyball
Championships that sees every Mazenod team competing in the
highest division possible. Great preparation and dedication has been a
hallmark of the build up and I hope that the teams get the results that
they deserve.
Can I remind you also of the Old Boys v Combined Oblate Colleges
(Mazenod Vic and WA as well as Iona) that will officially open the new
Synthetic Cricket Oval on Saturday 4 th December at 3:00 pm. Every
member of the community is welcome to attend.
As this article draws to a close, I would like to wish each and every
family a very blessed and holy Christmas. This next period of time can
be a wonderful time where we again reflect on the great joy of the
season. Our God became one of us, so that we might become one
with him. It is a season of such tremendous joy and I hope that you are
able to enjoy it with your families and local parishes.
Take Care and God Bless
Fr Michael Twigg O.M.I.

Traffic Concerns
Unfortunately a Year 7 student was injured last Thursday afternoon when he
ran across Kernot Ave at approximately 3pm. and was hit by a car which was
moving in an easterly direction towards Freeway Reserve. The driver was
travelling to Freeway Reserve to exercise his dogs. The student was bruised and
received medical attention. Witnesses to the incident were quite distressed.
In recent times we have asked families to contact the council regarding our
concerns.
Please remind your son of his responsibilities to be careful when crossing the
road. The road is a thoroughfare and the speed limit sign of 40 km/hr between
the speed humps is unreasonable considering the nature of the road. We are
hopeful the council will be responding to our concerns in the near future.
The contacts at the Council responsible for Traffic Management and
Infrastructure are:
Mr James Paterson Manager of Transport and Infrastructure
(mail@monash.vic.gov.au)
Mr Terry Tilletson Senior Transport Engineer
(mail@monash.vic.gov.au)
Please mark mail: Refer to Mr James Paterson and Mr Terry Tilletson when
forwarding concerns.
parliament.
Book Sales
Over $50000 of books have been sold over the last couple of weeks. With the
exception of some Year 11 and 12 texts all unsold texts have been returned to
the students. The boys can use the new Mazbay facility to advertise and sell
their books within the College Community. This facility is also useful for the
purchasing and selling of calculators.
This year a number of texts could only be sold secondhand or are in limited
supply from Campion. Students will be looking to purchase the books well into
next year and at the change of semester. The College has tried to minimize the
need to purchase new editions considering there will be significant changes to
courses over the next couple of years and as a consequence new books will be
required.
Should students be unable to purchase a particular text, provisions are being
organized and families affected will be contacted during the first week of
school in 2011.
The Texts:
I would like to take this chance to thank the Oblates, staff, parents and
students for making my 15 years at Mazenod a fantastic experience,
and in many ways a truly family experience. I have decided to take on
the role of Religious Education and Faith & Mission at De La Salle
College. During my time at Mazenod, I had the good fortune of being
both the Music Curriculum Coordinator 7-12 and the Religious
Education Coordinator 7-10. I also experienced the sad death of both
my parents, as well as the death of my mothers brother, who helped
to raise me from a young boy. On every occasion, the Oblates
supported me and my family with Last Rites and Funerals. During my
tenure, I also spent over 2 years in China teaching English. My original
idea was to go for only 12 months. Thanks to Fr. Pat Moroney, I was
allowed to stay longer and in that time, my wife and I were able to
adopt a beautiful baby from Jiang Xi Province - Charlotte Joan. When
we got her, she was only 6 months old and weighed only 6 kg. She had
bronchitis and touches of malnutrition. Her official Chinese certificate
states that she weighed only 2.5 kg when she was abandoned in a
railway station following her birth. My heartfelt thanks go to Fr.
Michael for looking after me when I became stranded in China for 4
months because of buearacratic bungling by the Australian
Government, and to Fr. Andrew for baptising Charlotte. The journey
with her has been difficult, but she is now 13 kg and has recently
celebrated her 2nd birthday.
I plead with parents to support the Oblates in Beijing in their difficult
mission caring for abandoned babies. Many of these little ones have
special needs, but are treatable with corrective surgery. The best way
to support the two Oblates working in Beijing is through your kind
donation of money. Unfortunately, they have to work "under the
cloak of darkness," otherwise they could be ejected from China.
Whatever help you can give would be gratefully accepted. If you ever
travel to Beijing on holidays, please consider spending some time with
the Oblates helping their ministry. They are located in the Sunyi
district, located near the airport. Additionally, the Oblates work hand
in hand with the Sisters of Charity who support young girls who have
become pregnant, but decide to have their child rather than abort it.
The problem for these girls is the fact that they not only have a little
one, but they have no prospect of a husband, income or even
a permanent place to live. The Sisters of Charity rely on people who
volunteer to look after the baby during the day while the mother is
either looking for work, or luckily making some kind of income. Once
again, like the Oblates, the Sisters do much of their work in secret. If
you are ever in Beijing, and decide to spend some time there - even a
week - caring for a baby during the day would be putting the Gospel
values into some kind of practice.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want more information
about the Oblate Mission in Beijing. Moreover, Fr. Chris Fini
coordinates MAMI and would be another ideal person to contact
about how to help the babies. My thanks goes to everyone who have
supported me in any way over my last 15 years at Mazenod.
Sincerely, Mr. Graeme Pender
MOTHERS’ AUXILIARY
The Mothers’ Auxiliary would like to thank the Mazenod
Community for all the help and support they have received this
year and wish all a very Merry Christmas and a safe holidays.
SPORTS NEWS
Another year gone, and we are all
“wiser for the experience” my
mum always used to tell me! Well how true she was to
give me such wise advice. It has been a big year; in fact no, it has been an
enormous year for the Sports Department from the first week, now and even
beyond for 2011. We run all year round and even when the majority of
students will be enjoying their first week of holidays a number of staff will be
involved in the Nationals Volleyball Championship, the Oblate Carnival as well
as ACC swimming training continuing over the holidays.
I can personally say that the fuel tank is flickering just above empty and the
break will give us all time to refresh and start again first week back in February
2011 with Senior ACC Sport on the first Wednesday and then the Junior Year 7
Swim Carnival on the first Friday. We have already begun our planning for next
year, as we are up and running with the ACC Swimming Carnival in week 3 and
the ACC Athletics in week 9. We have also increased our ACC participation next
year in Terms 3 and 4 by adding division 2 teams in at Junior levels, and
consequently giving more students the opportunity to continue or try out in a
team for the first time.
You could argue that sport never stops at Mazenod and that in itself is a good
thing! We are constantly challenging ourselves to improve in our performances
so that we can always say we have done our best. If there is one group of
people who have done always their best for the students it is the staff. So many
have given more than the time they have been allocated and it is your sons
who have benefited. They make sure that each team is prepared, ready and
enthusiastic to compete, whilst maintaining integrity and sportsmanship and
most importantly making sure it is fun and enjoyable.
As I have said on numerous occasions, the staff plays not only the role of coach,
but also bus driver, team manager, first aider, counsellor and even sometimes
umpire. If you showed this role description to anyone they would not apply for
such a job. All Mazenod staff do this with great passion, enthusiasm and
professionalism. It is they who make the program so strong and Mazenod so
respected. I thank each and every one of them for their dedication to helping
us provide the best sports program in the ACC!
In this I include all the staff that supervise and run programs here at the College
and other nearby venues. The Internal program and ACC support each other
and one could not be as successful without the other!
I would like to thank Mr Emilio Montoya who has the enormous task for finding
activities for up to 300 students per day, 3 times a week. It involves the
coordination of venues, transport and external staff. Emilio has displayed
extreme dedication to this task, as well as coaching ACC Teams. Mr Montoya
has been a fantastic support to the ACC program and words cannot express
how grateful we are for his passion for sport.
I would also like to thank the sport team of Mr David May, Mr David Bedwell
and Mr Jason Crabtree for their support of both programs through coaching
and organisation. One staff member in particular deserves mention is Mr David
Regan, who this year won the award for coaching the most ACC teams of any
staff member. David is often coaching three days a week, which can include 3
training sessions, as well as teach and play cricket and football for the Old
Collegians. I will buy David a drink on behalf of all at a later date. A special
mention must go to Mr Huon Bertino, Mr David Byrnes, Mr Simon Piasente and
Mr Peter Riley who all coached numerous teams over 4 terms.
On behalf of all the Mazenod sporting community I would like to thank Mr
Piasente for his dedication to sport. As most are aware Simon is moving down
to Geelong next year and our loss is their gain. Simon has coached many teams
at all year levels, and is often coaching more than one team a term. He will be
a hard man to replace and we wish him every success and happiness for the
future. We also thank Mr Damian Schuman who will at the end of the year
dedicate himself to representing Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic
Games at Beach Volleyball. Damian has decided to leave “Nothing undared” in
his dream to represent Australia. We wish him every success in his pursuit of
success. We do not lose Damian totally as he has offered to come back in
Term’s 1 and 4 to continue his support of the College’s volley ball program, the
same program that instilled him with his passion for volleyball. I also include in
this group Mr Nathan Baker who has given generously of his time and spirit to
coach many ACC teams. Nathan has had a passion for tennis and soccer and
this has been evident in the way he has coached students in these sports. All

those lucky enough to have been coached by him with no doubt keep his
passion burning at Mazenod as Nathan leaves us to go to Ararat. On behalf of
all at Mazenod I say a huge thank you to you all.
I would also like to again thank Fr Michael, the College Board and the Executive
of the College for their ongoing support of all our sports programs. They have
provided us all with outstanding resources and facilities to work at our best.
They are the support mechanism that helps us drive sport so successfully!
It is time now for us all to trade in our shares that we invested in sport and
count how much more we have earned and learned. The stock increase can be
easily seen in your sons who have a greater pride in themselves and the school
as a result of their investment. I hope that next year we can invest the same
and even more!
I wish every family a safe and enjoyable Christmas break and look forward to
doing it all again and better in 2011!
at The Victorian Volley ball Centre at Dandenong basketball Stadium in Stud Rd.
There are over 400 teams competing so we wish all our players well. Good luck
in particular to Mr Damian Schuman who has spent all year preparing our
students for this event in conjunction with staff and Old boys who will come in
to coach, drive, and cook, supervise and support!
AWARD WINNERS TERM 4 2010
The following students are to be congratulated for winning an award in their
team during the ACC season just completed. Due to time constraints I was
unable to get trophies engraved for each of these students and they will be
