The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock.
Our visitors are Whyteleafe who are one of the four teams in our Division who have yet to drop a
point this season. The others are Hastings United, Cray Wanderers and VCD Athletic. On Tuesday
they progressed through to the Emirates FA Cup 2 nd Qualifying round by beating Bostik
Premier side, Corinthian Casuals, in a replay. Welcome to Whyteleafes, Players, Officials and
Supporters as well as todays match officials.
After a couple of programmes that, because of holidays,
were not up to our usual standard we are back to normal
for this one.
Unfortunately, last Saturday we went out of this seasons
Emirates FA cup when we lost to Southern Premier side,
Gosport Borough. We started off the game very well and
for the first twenty minutes it was one way traffic. Bola
Dawodu harshly had a goal disallowed and during that
spell we had two other great chances to go ahead. However,
we did not keep the pace up and as the pace slowed down Gosport Brough got more into the
game. Early in the second half, a clumsy challenge was seen as a penalty by the referee and
Gosport Borough got the only goal of the goal. We had a few chances in the second half but so
did our visitors. Patrick Lee made a couple of excellent saves to make the game a nail biter to the
end and we couldn’t get the elusive equaliser. Ira Jackson was sent off late in the game for allegedly
elbowing a player. He will now miss todays match as well as Guernsey away and Ashford
United away. I was disappointed with the number of away supporters who visited us. Don’t think
it was in double figures. If the game had been at Gosport, we would have had 50 plus getting behind
us. I would have thought a Southern Premier side would do better. Gosport Borough now
play Ramsgate in the 2 nd Qualifying Round.
Our last league home game was against Cray Wanderers. This game was remembered for the
football, unlike last seasons encounters between the two sides. On the day, Cray were the better
side and deserved their 2-0 win.
The match at Dartford’s Princes Park ground against Thamesmead was notable for the abysmal
defending from both sides. I thought that after we scored a simple goal, when only about a minute
was on the watch, we would go on to score more goals. Well, we did, but, Thamesmead,
thanks to some very poor defensive play, scored five! A great game, this, for the neutral!
We will soon be announcing who our new kit sponsor is. We will have a new custom home and
away kit and replica kits will be available.
If anyone has Laser printer experience or knows of someone who may be able to help us please
contact me as we have a professional laser printer/ copier that we need some advice on.
In the next round of the Velocity trophy we are away to South Park on 2 nd October. The winners
are away to Ashford United or Folkestone Invicta.
Next up for us is away to Guernsey. This is next Sunday ( 2:00pm kick off). Another away trip follows
when we visit Ashford United on Tuesday 25 th September. We are next home here when we
play Ramsgate on Saturday 29 th September.
Hi Everyone.
From the Programme Editor
Well, I’ve just committed the unforgiveable sin
of going on holiday in the football season and
thereby missing our last three games! Apologies
that at
the time of
writing this,
there is no
report on the
Thamesmead
game
either on this
programme
or on the
web. It is important
for
me to have a
complete archive
of
match reports
on our
web site so I
will be seeking
to put a
report on that
game on the
site as soon
as I can.
My holiday
explains the
lack of Ken
Medwyn’s excellent videos and pics on the
website, but I will be including these on the
match reports shortly. Just a word of warning if
you use a lot of data on holiday and you have
roaming on, I have just had a £40 bill for updating
the website outside of UK waters (I was
on a cruise) but I had only used a very modest
amount of data, so keep roaming off!!
One of my ports of call was St Peters Port
Guernsey and although I like the Island very
much, my wife and I decided to go to Sark.
The Sark ferry goes from the main ferry port,
next to where the Condor ferry berths. You can
also get a ferry to Herm as well from near
there.
Sark is a very peaceful Island with no cars or
motorised transport except for tractors, one of
which can take you up to the very small main
“town” for £1.20 each way or you can walk.
For those of you going to Guernsey a trip to
Sark from St Peter Port costs £54 return and
the crossing takes about 50 minutes. A horse
drawn carriage trip around the Island sharing,
with others, lasts about an hour and costs £10.
There are a few pubs / cafes and we went into
a couple. The first was called the Mermaid inn
and I really cant recommend it. A very tatty
place that has no ambience! Instead I recommend
the Bel Air Inn that is just by where the
Tractor drops you off.
Unfortunately Sark is suffering (believe or not!)
from shops shutting down and there are a few
empty shops in the very short shopping row.
The carriage driver was telling us that there is
now no bakery or milk production on the Island.
The Bread now comes from England and
the milk from Guernsey. They have a school
that can take 30 pupils and there are 4 teachers
to look after the pupils. No further education
is available and pupils have to go to England
for that!
I have decided not to move there as I would
miss my football too much!!
Whyteleafe — A Brief History
FORMATIVE YEARS
Prior to the Second World War there were several
teams that competed locally using the Whyteleafe
name notably Whyteleafe Junior FC and
Whyteleafe Albion. Whyteleafe Albion competed
for many years but the club folded several years
before the Second World War. A new club,
simply called Whyteleafe FC, was formed in
1946.
The new club commenced Junior football as
members of the Caterham and Edenbridge, the
Thornton Heath & District and the Croydon
Leagues. Of these early years season 1951/52,
was the most successful, with a strong 'Leafe
line-up becoming Thornton Heath League
champions, winners of two local charity cups
and runners-up in both the Surrey County Junior
Cup and the League Cup.
Two years later they progressed to the Surrey
County Intermediate League (Eastern Division)
and were Division 1 champions in 1955/6. 1958
saw the significant transition from 'Junior' to
'Senior' status and entry into the Surrey Senior
League. This change required the club to move
from the New Barn Lane School ground which
was inadequate for senior football and with a
dynamic committee under the leadership of
Secretary Dick Baxendine, the club purchased
approximately four acres of farmland in nearby
Church Road, where the club still play today.
The original stand at Whyteleafe's old ground is
still used by Kenley Primary School and is clearly
visible from Valley Road about half a mile
north of the current ground.
NEW GROUND, NEW START
Play commenced on the new ground in season
1959/60, and in the early sixties the club gained
minor rewards with the reserve team playing
under the guidance of former Crystal Palace hero
Roy Greenwood. The next success came as
the 1960s drew to a close which saw 'Leafe as
Surrey Senior League Champions and runners
in the League Cup.
In the 1970s the floodlight training area and
stand were built and in 1975 the club moved into
the London Spartan League before joined the
Athenian League in 1981. The main pitch floodlights
were installed and the dressing rooms
were moved to their current location in the early
1980s
In the 1984/85 season, a league re-organisation
saw the club enter Division Two South of the
Isthmian League.
In November 1986 Steve Kember joined the
club as Manager having been associated with
the club for some years previously when with
Crystal Palace with whom he had won considerable
success. In two successive seasons Kember
engineered the club through to the third
Qualifying round of the FA Cup on two occasions.
A highly successful in 1988/89 saw the club win
promotion as runners-up in Division Two South
to Division One.
Steve Kember resigned in July 1993 and returned
to Crystal Palace as a coach and Paul
Hinshelwood briefly held the reins following Steve's
departure and, following the resignation of
his assistant Keith Wilkinson in October 1993,
Lee Richardson became assistant manager and
1st team coach.
THE RICHARDSON YEARS
August 1994 saw Richardson appointed manager.
This was a very popular appointment, as Lee
had been associated with the club on and off
since 1975 playing in excess of 400 games for
the club.
Season 1998/99 proved to be very mixed, with
the club achieving good cup results losing to
Welling Utd in sight of a first round visit to Bristol
Rovers in the FA Cup, and winning through
to the last 32 in the FA Trophy going out to the
eventual winners Kingstonian in front of a then
record home crowd of 945. But a season of
chronic injury saw 'Leafe struggle to survive in
the league and avoided relegation by winning
the last game of the season.
1999/2000 proved the most momentous in the
club's history. For the first time ever the club
reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup
when a crowd of 2,164, easily beat the previous
season's record in a match which saw them
hold league opponents Chester City to a 0-0
draw before going down 1-3 in a replay at Chester.
An imposing new stand was built at the top end
of the ground just in time for the big match
thanks to a superb effort from all involved with
the club. The years that followed never lived up
to 1999 and the club went into a slow but steady
decline in fortunes.
MANAGERIAL CHANGES
In 2002 the team hit a low ebb at Bracknell at
Christmas where they suffered a heavy defeat
that prompted Richardson's resignation. Stuart
Massey held the reins until October 2006 and
after a spell with chairman Mark Coote picking
the team, former Crystal Palace striker Dave
Swindlehurst joined the club in December.
The team did reasonably well under Swin-
Whyteleafe — A Brief History—Cont
ALL CHANGE AGAIN
The winter of 2009/10 was hard one and bad
weather hit hard on the club's finances. Massey
resigned and former AFC Wimbledon and Chipstead
manager Nicky English took over in the
summer of 2010. Despite the dire financial position
the club found itself in English’s team had a
purple patch after Christmas 2010, which included
a remarkable 5-4 victory at eventual
champions Met Police, and steered themselves
away from relegation.
The first year back in the Ryman League was
also momentous and the team belied expectation
finishing in fifth place only to lose out in a
play-off match at Folkestone. Leafe struggled to
repeat this achievement the following year and
in 2016, John Fowler decided he had taken the
team as far as he could and stood down. Former
Farnborough assistant manager Leigh Dynan
took over in October and began a period of
major squad reconstruction.
Nicky's hard work and commitment was never in
doubt but things just didn't work in the following
year and he left the club in January 2012 with
Steve Griffin given the tough job of catching up
20th placed side Burgess Hill Town when 12
point adrift.
The appointment coincided with a change in
club constitution which saw Mark Coote become
owner-chairman (as opposed to electedchairman).
The change gave the Club renewed
hope of future development and progression yet
the 2011/12 season ended in bitter disappointment
and the club’s first relegation in its history
despite drawing level with Burgess Hill at one
point and only losing to an extraordinary result
by the Hillians against Dulwich Hamlet.
WHAT GOES DOWN...
After a season of moderate success in the Kent
League being badly injured in a car accident the
summer of 2013 Griffin stood down and former
Whyteleafe player and Croydon manager John
Fowler joined the club. Fowler build a completely
new team in a very short time and one that
made an immediate impact. In a memorable
season for the club, the team went on to win the
newly named Southern Counties East League
by a clear 11 points and the team rejoined the
Isthmian League of which they had been members
for 28 of the preceding 30 years.
At the start of 2017/18 Whyteleafe topped the
division and the future looked bright, but Dynan
went on to leave the Leafe in October 2017 to
join Kingstonian FC. John Scarborough was
put in charge as Acting Manager and in November
2017 was joined by Paul Dale, former assistant
manager at Tooting & Mitcham United, and
the two were appointed Joint Managers. However,
at the end of the season Scarborough retired
from football and Dale moved elsewhere
due to work commitments.
For the start of the 2018/19 season young manager
Harry Hudson and his assistant Calum
McFarlane were appointed following a successful
stint at Croydon FC, and have set up a
young, enthusiastic side to take the Leafe forward
in the season ahead.
10 players sent off after mass brawl – Vitoria v Bahia, 2018 : There’s something about South
American football and short-fused tempers. No surprises then when a yellow card was brandished
within the first minute of play between Brazil top-flight rivals Victoria and Bahia.
Despite a flurry of yellow cards nothing appeared out of the ordinary during a first-half display
which saw Vitoria hold the lead 1-0 at the interval. This was the first time in three seasons
sets of supporters from both teams were allowed to attend the match. But it was on the pitch
not in the stands that the match would descend into chaos.
Four minutes into the second half a converted penalty by Bahia’s Vinicius led to a ‘crude’ celebration
in front of the opponent’s supporters, something Vitoria goalkeeper Fernando Miguel
didn’t take too kindly to. And after confronting Vinicius he was backed up in violent ways by
his team-mates who unloaded punches on their opponents.
The furore was brought under control after 16 minutes when the referee dismissed a total of
eight players; five from Bahia and three from Vitoria.
Incredibly, the match went on but it would not last the full 90 minutes as on the verge of the
80 th minute as two more players were shown red cards, reducing Vitoria to six players and
leading to the match being abandoned.
Velocity Trophy
Sittingbourne 2 Phoenix Sports 0
Attendance : 80
League Cup-ties are often pretty low priority for
clubs, but it was important for Sittingbourne to
find a way to win again after two disappointing
league defeats in a row.
And find a win they did, against decent opponents
in Phoenix, who themselves have made a
good start to the season.
Sittingbourne won it with goals at the start and
end of the second half and showed lots of determination
and energy in a well-contested and
enjoyable Velocity Trophy match.
With a big FA Cup-tie coming up on Saturday,
they rested key players with Lex Allan, Tom
Loynes, Dan Parkinson and Ira Jackson all
saved for the Gosport Borough match.
Making their debuts were promising Margate
youngster Ben Fitchett and speedy winger Kenny
Orenuca, while Harry Brooks grabbed at the
chance to return in goal, and a switch in positions
in defence saw Chris Webber return to
right-back and Josh Dorling to centre-half – the
positions they played last season.
It was a very even first half with few chances,
Tom Fagg having a couple of low drives saved
comfortably by the Phoenix keeper, and Brooks
remaining relatively untroubled at the other end.
Sittingbourne wasted a couple of free-kicks in
good positions by hitting the ball too near to the
keeper, and the outstanding moment of the half
came when Fitchett won the ball with a brilliantly-timed
and brave tackle in his own area. And
he capped that soon after the second half restart,
neatly flicking in Orenuca’s near post corner
to give Sittingbourne the lead.
Sittingbourne had by far the better opportunities
after that but Orenuca was wide from very close
range after Bola Dawodu set him up, sub Johan
Caney-Bryan got clean through but was foiled
by an excellent save by the Phoenix keeper
with his legs, and Izzy Adebayo hit the bar
when it seemed easier to score. But he made
amends with the last kick of the game, comfortably
stroking home a low shot from the edge of
the area – just as he did at Tonbridge in his only
other start, in the Kent Senior Cup. This was
after Caney-Bryan, the Phoenix keeper and a
defender all went for the same ball and it rolled
clear of all of them.
Important as the win was, and important as it
was to put in a good all-round performance to
deservedly secure a place in the next round,
the best thing about the night for manager
Aslan Odev must have been keeping a clean
sheet after the horrors of conceding five at
Thamesmead on Saturday.
Saturday 8th September 2018
Emirates FA Cup, 1st Qualifying Round
Sittingbourne 0 Gosport Borough 1, Att 154
That’s two cup competitions Sittingbourne
have gone out of this season on penalties.
The first was in the Kent Senior Cup when
three penalties were awarded against them at
Tonbridge and they lost 3-2, while this was the
altogether more important matter of the Emirates
FA Cup.
Again it was decided on penalties, well just the
one, awarded to Gosport Borough after 52
minutes. And the one Sittingbourne might have
had as they pressed desperately for an equaliser,
and a replay.
But it was Gosport who got the crucial decisions
and they were able to wind down the
clock and manage the game out successfully,
even though they lost both their central defenders
to second half injuries.
Sittingbourne were left to regret missing out on
the £6,000 prize money from the FA, made
doubly annoying by the niggling feeling that not
a lot went their way in the form of decisions
from the officials.
Perhaps it’s because they’re such a young
team that there’s a bit of naivety about their
tackling, or that they come up against more
experienced players who crumple to the
ground at the slightest touch and successfully
claim free-kicks.
To cap it all, and complete what all in was a
very disappointing afternoon, they had Ira
Jackson sent off deep into injury time on the
say of an assistant referee.
What Sittingbourne can take from the game is
that they more than matched a team who play
football one division higher, and on another
day they could easily have ended up with at
least a replay.
On an autumnal afternoon, manager Aslan
Odev had some selection issues to resolve for
the first time this season really, and it meant
Reiss Crimmen and Tom Loynes were
squeezed out of the starting line-up from the
previous week’s 5-4 defeat at Thamesmead.
Pat Lee retained the keeper’s jersey ahead of
Harry Brooks, who kept a clean sheet in the
midweek League Cup win, and turned in his
best performance yet, with a couple of brilliant
second half saves.
Sittingbourne started brightly and Tom Fagg’s
header from an early corner was scrambled
away by the keeper with Lewis Chambers just
enable to find the target as he got his head to
the rebound.
Both Bola Dawodu and Chambers had shots
well blocked by Gosport defenders when they
had good openings on goal, and the visitors
took the threat of Chambers’ long throws so
seriously they pulled all 11 players back into
the penalty area to defend them.
Gosport hit the bar with one effort – as they did
in the second half, too – and Lee made a good
save to tip over Pennery’s shot.
The visitors got the only goal of the game on
52 minutes when a push by Chambers as he
went for a header was penalised, and Pennery
neatly scored from the spot-kick.
Understandably, Gosport wasted time for all
they were worth, and Sittingbourne relied
heavily on throw-ins, free-kicks and corners as
they didn’t create too many chances from open
play.
Dawodu just failed to get into position to turn a
chance in from Chris Webber’s pull-back while
their other big opportunity was an 83rd minute
free-kick for Ira Jackson from an identical spot
to where he scored a spectacular goal against
Greenwich Borough last month. But he drove
this one into the wall.
There were big appeals for a penalty, too,
when defender Casey’s clumsy challenge for a
high ball ended up with him injuring himself
when he clattered into the Sittingbourne player
but the referee waved away appeals.
The game ended with Jackson getting his
marching orders, and Gosport winning the
place in the next round. Wembley will have to
wait for another year.
team.
