his Czech wife Lenka 

and one-year-old 

daughter Sofie in the 

southern Moravian 

wine district – for 

a wedding. “What

For the second time, 

CHRIS CLANCEY, 

her husband, and 

their two sons left 

Haddonfield for 

North Carolina 

and whitewater 

rafting. This time, 

they explored the 

Tuckasegee River. 

“We loved it,” 

said Chris. “We’re 

hooked!”



In the run for health: healthy Kids starts 9/23 

Healthy Kids Running Series is a national community-based nonprofit that 

provides a fun five-week running program for ages 2 to 14. The series seeks 

participants for its program in Haddonfield. The first of five consecutive 

Sunday afternoon races commence on Sun Sep 23 at 5pm at Crows Woods 

Fields (901 East Atlantic Ave.) Each Healthy Kids Running Series takes place 

once a week and offers age-appropriate race distances. 

Kids compete each week for a chance to earn points, and at the end 

of the series, the top boy and girl in their respective age division earn a 

trophy. All participants receive a finishers medal, race bag and Healthy 

Kids Running Series tech shirt for their achievements. The running series 

teaches its participants to live an active lifestyle through goal-setting and 

with dedication. To register a child, volunteer, or become a sponsor, see at

The Brass and the Beat will perform Fri Sep 28, 

7:30pm at First Baptist Church. 

Folks of all ages will swing along to the 16-piece 

band, along with vocalists, as they present an 

evening of music from the Big Band era along with 

popular showtunes. A meet-and-greet reception 

with light refreshments will follow the performance. 

Suggested donation is $10 per adult.

Kousoulis Cup golf outing 

Danielle Kousoulis was working on the 104th 

floor of the North Tower at the World Trade Center 

on September 11th, 2001, and lost her life that day. 

The Danielle Kousoulis Memorial Scholarship Fund 

was formed to continue Danielle’s spirit of caring 

and generosity, and in 2002 celebrated its Inaugural 

Golf Outing. With help from sponsors and golfers, 

each year’s tournament has been an even greater 

success. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the 

scholarship fund, making it possible for us to keep 

the fund thriving, and in turn to keep Danielle’s 

memory alive. 

The 16th Annual Kousoulis Cup Golf Outing is 

Mon Oct 1 at Scotland Run Golf Club, Rt. 322 & Fries 

Mill Rd, Williamstown. Each year the scholarship 

fund awards academic scholarships to a Haddon 

Township High School graduate (Danielle’s alma 

mater), and to a member of Danielle’s church, St. 

Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill.

to help commemorate and celebrate Danielle’s 

beautiful life that was tragically cut short 17 years 

ago. As time passes and we move further away

Flea Market is Sep 15 

The countdown has begun for the Haddonfield 

Lions Club annual Flea Market, on Sat Sep 15 from 

9am to 2pm in the parking lot of the Archer law firm, 

33 E Euclid Ave. 

More than 75 vendors will offer an assortment of 

new, used, vintage, antique, and handcrafted items. 

Refreshments – breakfast sandwiches, burgers and 

dogs, cooked by members of the Lions Club and 

the High School Leo Club, as well as Philly-style 

pretzels, soft drinks, and water – will be for sale 

throughout the day. The rain date is Sat Sep 22. 

All proceeds from the event benefit the 

Haddonfield Lions Foundation, which supports 

community programs and activities, and provides 

assistance to people with vision-related issues and 

those in need locally, regionally, and throughout the 

world. (Want to sell some goods at the Flea Market 

without being there? See page 9.) 

The Farmer’s Market will also be open that 

Saturday, as well as the always-popular Friends 

of the Library Book Sale and the Haddonfield Car 

Show hosted by the AACA Ankokas Region Car 

Club. It will be a wonderful day to be in Haddonfield!

Challenge grant for history 

The Historical Society of Haddonfield has received a challenge grant in 

support of its planned new Archives Center building. Donations made in honor 

of past president Pat Lennon are being matched dollar-for-dollar. The goal of 

the community challenge is to raise enough funds to reserve one of the new 

building’s naming opportunities in Pat’s honor. 

Now 96 years old, Pat was a longtime resident of Haddonfield before moving 

to New Hampshire. She is an active supporter of the Historical Society and 

served as president for three separate terms in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Pat 

was named Haddonfield Citizen of the Year in 1978, and has also been deeply 

involved with Symphony in C, Christ the King Catholic Church, and the Durand 

Academy, among others. Donations can be mailed to the Historical Society, and 

gifts can also be made at haddonfieldhistory.org. Donors who wish to have their 

gifts matched must designate that they are giving in Pat’s honor.

year-long project to install a Blue Star Memorial in 

Camden County. All are welcome their first meeting

not commit to helping 

every month. 

The clinic needs 

donations of food, 

clothing, and small 

toys and books for the 

children. Funds are, of 

course, always welcome. 

About 50 people come to 

the clinic each month.

Clinic will be open on

2pm. They are in special 

need of shoes, socks,

The Haddonfield School District will open its 

schools on Tuesday, September 4 for teachers and on 

Wednesday, September 5 for students (a half day). 

The District will be closed on Monday, September 10 

for Rosh Hashanah and Wednesday, September 19 for 

Yom Kippur. 

Winter Break begins on Friday, December 21 (half 

day); everyone will return on January 2. 

Spring Break begins on Friday, April 19; school 

resumes on Monday, April 29. 

Graduation is slated for Thursday, June 20, and the 

last day of school will be Friday, June 21, 2019. 

From a 30,000-foot perspective, 2018-19 will be a 

transitional/planning year for our District, as one 

might expect. The Board will engage stakeholders in 

a full-blown strategic planning process to guide the 

District seamlessly into the future. 

We will see the re-creation of the Director of 

Curriculum/Chief Academic Officer position, 

coordinating all curricular, instructional, professional 

development, assessment, and accountability systems 

in the District. 

My hope also is to engage someone to tend to our 

new website and help the Board and the District 

do a better job of communicating with the greater 

Haddonfield community. 

Diversity, social justice, and equity will be major 

areas of focus during the coming year. Dr. Shelley Zion 

from Rowan University will assist us in this quest. 

Exciting times ahead. No question about that! 

The construction projects are progressing well. 

• Elizabeth Haddon, Central, and the Middle School 

should be back to a (new) normal on September 4. 

• Tatem is seeing aggressive construction activity 

over the summer, to accelerate that project’s 

completion. Most of the work on the front wall will 

be completed by September 4 and Phase 3 (the 

area next to the library) is on schedule. There will 

be inconveniences through December, but we are 

optimistic that the entire project will be completed by 

the end of the Winter Break. Fingers crossed. 

• The High School track should be finished by 

September. Except for the back part of the auditorium, 

the roof will be mostly complete by September 4. The 

B Wing is on schedule for January 2019. 

We are looking forward this year to organizational 

stability and strong planning for the future. 

That said, my wish is for all students and faculty to 

have a successful and productive school year, filled 

with wondrous new learning and marvelous new 

experiences.

Fall Fest: Fabulous, Sat Oct 13 

What a bounty: It’s the Fall Festival and Craft 

Show, returning Sat Oct 13 from 10am to 5pm in 

Downtown Haddonfield. The festival will feature 

more than 100 crafters offering seasonal items 

and decor, pottery, clothing, glassware and other 

handcrafted wares will set up various artisan tents 

along Kings Highway and Tanner Street. (Tanner will 

be closed to vehicles.) A variety of Haddonfield’s 

community groups will also be lined up along Kings 

Highway between Haddon Ave and the PATCO 

Hi-Speedline. Representatives will be on hand to 

educate and inform you about the organizations 

that make Haddonfield a great place to live.

Sing out! Open chorus rehearsal Mon Sep 10 

The Greater South Jersey Chorus is kicking off its 2018-19 season with an 

Open Rehearsal and Welcome Reception at 6:30pm on Mon Sep 10 in the 

Performance Hall at Grace Episcopal Church, 19 Kings Hwy E. 

All music lovers are welcome to attend, participate, and get a taste of what 

this friendly and enthusiastic arts community has to offer! 

The Greater South Jersey Chorus (GSJC) has contributed to the region’s 

musical landscape for more than 25 years. The chorus, numbering more than 

90 voices, is led by artistic director Dr. Christopher B. Thomas of Rowan 

University and accompanist Maximillian Esmus. Rehearsals take place on 

Monday evenings at the Haddonfield Center and School for the Performing Arts 

at Grace Church. 

An exciting season is in store. The chorus’s holiday concerts on Sat Dec 15 

and Sun 16 will highlight festive traditions, and the spring concerts on Sat May 

4 and Sun 5 will delve into powerful pieces that speak to the human condition. 

The chorus’s annual gala fundraiser, Vino Forte, Sat Mar 30, blends wine, 

catered treats, and memorable tunes from stage and screen at Laurita Winery 

in New Egypt. Cabaret, Sat Nov 3, will be a rollicking musical revue in a jazz 

club-esque atmosphere, complete with refreshments. The Artists’ Showcase on 

Sun Feb 24will feature individual and small-group performances. 

The Greater South Jersey Chorus will team up with the Philharmonic of 

Southern New Jersey in the fall and the Garden State Girlchoir and New Jersey 

Boychoir in the spring, among other collaborations. 

Interested in being a part of this vibrant community? Come sing alongside 

chorus members at the Open Rehearsal on Mon Sep 10. Enjoy light 

refreshments and mingle with chorus members at 6:30pm, then participate in 

rehearsal. Free and affordable parking options include metered street parking

• NJ PEN: Headed into the first year of your term, what 

are your priorities for the district? 

• MUSSOLINE: I think what the board wanted was 

somebody to organize the district to be better prepared 

for 21st-century learning. 

The way I see things, from the principals on down, 

we’re pretty strong. 

I think we need to reorganize things from a board 

and central office perspective. So that’s one of the top 

priorities. 

We just went out to hire a curriculum director; it’s 

an open position. I’m going to take this to “director 

of curriculum and chief academic officer.” Their 

responsibilities will include professional development, 

assessment, and even moreover, accountability. 

Are we accountable to our students? Are they learning 

on grade level? Are we doing a service to our high-school 

students in terms of where their end-goals are? We’ve 

really got to put a resource towards that. We’re lagging 

a bit in what I would call 21st-century teaching and 

learning. 

• NJ PEN: How do you define “21st-century learning?” 

• MUSSOLINE: It’s what our students need ... ■

The Haddonfield Center for the Performing Arts’

“Tubular,” a unique ensemble that styles itself 

as “the world’s best tuba cover band,” opens

A fall exercise program sponsored by First 

Presbyterian Church and held at its preschool will 

get underway Mon Sep 10 and continue thru Fri 

Dec 21, excluding Thanksgiving week: Nov 19 to 

23. You can join at any time during the 3.5-month 

period. Exercise in the church preschool, 20 Kings 

Hwy E, daily – or occasionally: 

• Pilates – Mon, Wed, Fri, 9:15 to 10a – a progressive 

series of exercises that accommodate all fitness 

levels to increase strength, flexibility and balance. 

• Sculpt & Tone – Tue, Thu, 9:45 to 10:30a – group 

fitness using non-aerobic strength training, 

combining effective exercises based on weight 

training, Pilates principles, and calisthenics by the 

use of tubes, bender balls, and glides. 

• Step Aerobics – Tue, Thu, 9:15 to 9:45a – highintensity, 

low impact aerobic workout with steps 

provided.

for the annual Friends 

of the Library Book

Going out with a bang: 

20 years of First Night

After presenting a family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration of the arts on New Year’s 

Eve for twenty consecutive years, the organizers of First Night Haddonfield have 

decided to take a bow and retire. 

There will be no First Night celebration in Haddonfield on December 31 this year, 

but we are looking at other ways for folks from Haddonfield and throughout the region 

to welcome the new year. 

The first First Night was in Boston on December 31, 1975. It was designed to provide 

ways for the city’s young, innovative artists and musicians to celebrate the arrival of 

the new year on both indoor and outdoor stages. The organizers also wanted to avoid 

the emphasis on alcohol that is all too common at New Year’s Eve parties. 

In the years that followed, some nearby communities started their own First Night 

events and by 2000 there were more than 250 official First Night celebrations in the 

United States and around the world. But post-9/11 jitters and the recession that began 

in late 2007 resulted in many First Nights being scaled back or canceled. 

Haddonfield’s first First Night was December 31, 1999. 

All 5,000 admission buttons for the event were sold by 

December 29. Some who missed out placed notices 

on bulletin boards around the town, offering to pay 

a premium for buttons. The “millennium” celebration 

on December 31, 2000 was even bigger. An additional 

2,000 buttons were made available, and again the 

event was sold out. 

Fireworks on Kings Highway were introduced in 

2001, with shows at 9pm (the children’s countdown) 

and midnight. 

What made First Night work so well in Haddonfield? 

There are a number of reasons. 

• First – the Kings Highway “spine,” a magnificent main street

with more than a dozen indoor and outdoor venues of varying sizes from the 

Methodist Church to the High School. It was very easy for First Nighters to get from 

one venue to the next. 

• Second – right from the beginning we had a wide variety of first-class entertainment. 

Each year we would bring back some popular performers from the past, but always 

book new talent as well. There was something for everyone, from age 3 to 93. 

• Third – our sponsors – scores of them. The Haddonfield Foundation and Archer & 

Greiner were founding sponsors, and continued their support until the end. AllRisk 

Property Damage Experts sponsored the fireworks for many years. More recently, 

Comcast and Subaru became major sponsors. We can’t thank them enough, and we 

hope to find ways to keep them connected with New Year’s Eve in Haddonfield. 

• Many people don’t realize what it takes to plan and present an event of the scale of 

First Night. Our “secret ingredient” was a large pool of enthusiastic volunteers. Each 

year, we signed up more than 100 volunteers – some to work throughout the year; 

most to work at venues and button outlets on the night itself. 

• We also had a core group that was on board from Day One – people like Tish 

Colombi, the vice president of the Haddonfield Cultural Events Commission (the 

“parent” of First Night), treasurer Gene D’Orazio, and entertainment director Jane 

Mathers, who booked the performers for all twenty years – a huge, demanding job. 

Since the one constant in life is change, events such as First Night must change with 

the times. We do not yet know what might come next – stay tuned! 

On behalf of the Haddonfield Cultural Events Commission and the members of the 

First Night Steering Committee, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of the sponsors, 

venues, performers, municipal departments, and First Nighters from near and far who 

helped make our twenty New Year’s Eve celebrations so successful and so much fun.
