Over the next two decades, both companies would grow their businesses and, in turn, help turbo-charge the global popularity of the cheesesteak sandwich as well. In 1994 the Original Philly Cheesesteak Co. moved its headquarters and manufacturing facility to the current location on East Hunting Park Avenue. Philadelphia Pre-Cooked Steak Co. would soon follow suit, moving from Aston to Venango Street and finally, to its current location on North American Street. The companies have earned the reputation as industry leaders and innovators; and the world’s largest manufacturers focused exclusively on Philly Steak products. From natural, unseasoned beef steaks to marinated chicken slices; from fully cooked beef steak slices with caramelized onions to cheesesteak egg rolls, the companies have well over 200 product offerings. In fact, they craft enough raw and fully-cooked Philly Steak each day to make a cheesesteak large enough to stretch from South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Original Philly Cheesesteak Co. and Philadelphia Pre-Cooked Steak products are carried by all major food distributors and are available directly to the consumer at select wholesale clubs. Where are the products served? Everywhere—from neighborhood sub shops, delis, pizzerias, and bars to national restaurant chains, convenience stores, sports and entertainment venues, healthcare, education, corporate, military, and cafeteria operations. A quality driven approach extends beyond products and customer service at the companies, it is also the approach applied to the relationship with their 200 plus employees and the local community at large. Many of their employees have been with the companies since the day they opened their doors. Humphrys is one of the oldest manufacturing companies in the United States, continuously operating in Philadelphia since 1874 when two Humphrys brothers began following their dreams. David Humphrys opened D. C. Humphrys in 1874 selling flags and banners. Robert Humphrys opened R. A. Humphrys in 1882 to sell wagon covers, horse covers, and tarpaulins. Nate Nissenbaum, who founded his own tarp and drop cloth company in 1929, eventually purchased and combined both Humphrys’ companies in the mid-1900s. Through steady growth and acquisition, including CoverSports in the late 1990s and Globe Canvas Products in 2013, Humphrys CoverSports has thrived. More than 140 years later, the company is a national leader in its product categories. Operating today from a 160,000 square foot facility in Southwest Philadelphia with over 100 employees, Nate’s son, Ronald, is the CEO. Fred Hoge is president of the Humphrys CoverSports division, while Kevin Kelly is president of the Globe Canvas division. In the spirit of true family businesses, Ronald’s son Zak is senior vice president and his daughters Shana Brenner and Jamie Nissenbaum also are in managerial roles. While horse and wagon covers were in demand in nineteenth century Philadelphia, today the CoverSports division ships protective coverings for sports fields ranging from the Little League to the Major League. Products include FieldSaver ® tarps, GymGuard ® gym floor covers, FenceMate ® windscreens, and sports banners for all types of venues. In addition the company sells EnviroSafe ® —a unique line of gymnastic mats and wall padding with a foam-like core made from recycled soda bottles. The Humphrys division sells industrial type protective covers that include tarps for trucking, construction, industrial covers, and large geomembranes up to 200,000 square feet in one piece. Humphrys also produces military truck tarps and nuclear containment bags and tubing made to precise U.S. Government specifications. Globe Canvas Products, founded in 1974, is the leading Mid Atlantic wholesale awning manufacturer of commercial and residential stationary and retractable fabric awnings. Ronald states “while our product lines have changed since 1874, what has not changed is our constant commitment to serving our customers with prompt deliveries, quality products, and value. This is what has kept us the manufacturing leader in the markets we have sold for over 140 years.
