Do You Have a Beard?<br />

Being a Transgender person I lived through long periods in my life<br />
where I had to understand, experiment and “play” with gender and<br />
identity.<br />
During these times I learned a lot about gender marks and how the<br />
world uses to immediately identify one’s gender.<br />
I realised people around me never had the chance/need to dwell upon<br />
this issue and I developed a way to help them “feel” some of what I<br />
felt during transition.<br />
Together with some of my fellow students we created a corner where,<br />
for a whole month, anyone could play with our “portable beards”, use<br />
them, play with them, take pictures and pull faces, and in the end keep<br />
them or leave them for the next to come.

This publication, made of simple wood and paper, contained facts and<br />
figures, both positive and negative about discrimination in the western<br />
world.

as a high extinction risk species. Yet, they have<br />
built a fairer, more inclusive and substantially<br />
better than ours, what can we learn from them?

Identity<br />
In 2015 I entered the world of “New Athletic”:<br />
a gym founded in 1979, well rooted in a 40.000<br />
people area. It was an old gym, rooted in<br />
martial arts and bodybuilding. The mission<br />
was to change its Identity from “neglected but<br />
cheap” to “the coolest gym in the area”. We<br />
looked at history built a whole new strategy.<br />
We didn’t want to loose what was already cool<br />
about the place: its history, its “grungy” location<br />
and its roots in the people of an area that is very<br />
similar to old Hackney in London. We turned<br />
ironic and quite daring in our communication,<br />
because we needed to change our image in<br />
people’s minds. In the end, with a steady growth<br />
we doubled our clubbers and got to be the<br />
“place to go” in the area.<br />

With its 800 clubbers, New Athletic has<br />
become an important landmark in the area.<br />
But why stop with the gym?<br />
In the past 20 years the ‘hood has changed<br />
and it has become “so dangerous” that 3<br />
years ago the govenment deemed it
necessary to send in the army for street<br />
patrolling. But how about people who live<br />
there? Are they all “dangerous”?<br />
#MadeInArcella was thinked of as a<br />
provocation but soon became a sparkle to<br />
something more, maybe a change?

Thanks to the hint given by #MadeInArcella, a group<br />
of citizens living in the area start a crowd-sourcing<br />
campaign to fight urban decay in the most debated<br />
area of Veneto:<br />

We created an online platform where anyone with<br />
a space, be it a garage, a shop or a private garden,<br />
could make it available. Meanwhile artists of all sorts<br />
could match their performance’s needs to any of the<br />
available spaces thus creating a sort of “diffused<br />
stage” throughout the whole area.<br />
No place is dangerous if people start going out and<br />
re-taking the streets.
