The story of
Sherry
Jerez in Spain was a centre of viticulture in Spain in about
1100 BC but the Romans had a bigger influence after.
were vanquished, production of Sherry as we know
it began again. Sir Francis Drake after sacking
Cadiz in 1587 brought back 2,900 barrels of Sherry.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
This was around 200 BC when the Moors
conquered the area in AD 711 the art of distillation
became known, introducing brandy and thus
fortified wine. During the Moorish period the town
was called Sherish which would seem to be the
likely source of the name Sherry.
Although Arab rule dictated that all vineyards
should be destroyed, some were allowed to
produce raisins and table grapes.
In 1264 when Alfonso took the city and the Moors
From that moment on Sherry became a popular
drink in the British Isles.
Production...
Sherry, by law must come from the triangular
area between, Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de
Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria and
mostly from the Palomino grape.
The climate in this area has about 300 days of
sun each year, dry and hot. It is moderated a
little by winds bringing moisture from the ocean.
Temperatures can often reach 40 C.
The soils in this area are quite unique formed
