SUFFOLK PUNCH
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Suffolk Punch Boxing Club at
Martlesham, Ipswich has been
running since 2013 and is lead by
highly qualified Coaches Rob Hodgins
(who has been coaching for 28 years)
and Sara Thomas.
The club is open to all abilities from complete
novices (that’ll be me), to highly advanced and
professional level fighters, the club has two of
its own professional boxers along with many
regional champions.
(Cue the Rocky theme), so in true Action Man
fashion I jumped straight in, donned the gloves
and entered the ring ready to join one of
Suffolk Punch’s beginner classes.
First off, was a rather intense warm up that really
got the heart racing and the sweat flowing,
followed by a run through the basics for the
extreme novices like myself.
We worked on our footwork and pacing, which
goes hand in hand with the striking, but before
that we had to learn to defend. You won’t last two
seconds in the ring without moving and blocking
right? So, we worked on some movement drills
and it wasn’t too long before I was floating like a
butterfly... now to sting like a bee.
Working in pairs with some pads, and the
watchful eye of coach Sara, we were taught the
jab, cross and hook. We were also shown how
the additional, bout winning power is delivered
through the legs and the hips. Just like any sport
brut strength will always lose out to technique,
but you can easily pick up those techniques
thanks to the excellent coaching and welcoming
environment at Suffolk Punch Boxing Club.
