Check out my new
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
It’s been non-stop for me this month!
I’ve been busy writing my
‘Pro Age’ interviews over
on the blog.
It’s had such a positive
response from all the
women I’ve asked. So an
enormous thank you to
you all!
Following on form last
months article, I’m giving
my advice my favourite
places to visit for the best
skin and body treatments in
the local area.
This month, I visited the wonderful
Heritage and Wellbeing Centre in Bury
St Edmunds.
On the cusp of its 2 nd Birthday, I spoke
to owners Lisa and Rebecca about how
they have just been voted the
No 1 spa on trip advisor in
Suffolk, as well as having a 5
Bubble Spa rating - all very
exciting.
Situated in serene parkland
the Spa offers a wide
range of treatments and
packages.
I honestly didn’t want
to leave. You can
read about my Pro60
Dermalogica facial and
my interview with Lisa
and Rebecca on the
blog. My skin felt beyond amazing.
Back to fashion… I’ve always had a huge
thing for leopard print.
Well, since Spice Girl Mel B made it cool
again! I love the fact that you can
put it with almost any colour and
it goes!
Gone are the Bet Lynch
comparisons. Whether you are
having a dabble with a belt or a
pair of shoes, or like me you go
full on don’t care leopard print.
My mum, who is an amazing
seamstress, even covered a bra
in leopard print fabric for me to
wear with bell-bottomed trousers
and a black jacket! (It was the
90s remember)! I know it’s an
acquired taste but I love it! Here
are a few of my favourite
outfits.
My most recent purchase was
again from Javelin Fashion
situated in the high street in Bury
St Edmunds.
My new retro red
hairstyle!
It was in the sale for £12! I
couldn’t leave without it.
**Don’t forget now is a great
time to get next year’s summer
wardrobe as the retailers go into
their summer sales**
Lastly, I got fed up with my
blonde hair so I took the plunge
and went retro red!
Thank you to my sister Sophie for
turning me into a redhead. I am
so happy with it!
Whatever you’re doing for the
rest of the summer…
I love leopard
of my favourites!
WeddingAngel
Finding a Wedding Photographer
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
Unlike the work of
your other wedding
vendors (music, flower
arrangements, cake),
photographs aren’t things
you can hear, smell, taste or
even see at first—you don’t
really know what you’re
getting until after the fact.
photographer you’ll want shooting your wedding. Do any of the
following appeal to you?
Documentary: Instead of a series of posed photos, these are
candid or spontaneous pictures (read: not styled) of people,
décor and the action.
Portraiture: If you prefer classic portraits (think: your parents’
wedding album), go with a traditional photographer who
specializes in portraiture. These are posed shots of the two of
you, your friends and family in front of various backdrops.
That means careful research
and selectiveness regarding
professional skills, artistic style
and personal demeanor are extra
important when choosing your
photographer.
STEP 1: SETTLE ON A STYLE
Before you begin researching
photographers, you’ll need to first
decide what type of photography
style you prefer, as that will
help determine which kind of
Fine Art: Though it’s similar to documentary photography, this
style gives the shooter greater artistic license to infuse their
particular point of view and style into your photographs.
Edgy and Bold: This style of photography, an offshoot of fine
art, is marked by outside-the-box, tilted angles (called Dutch
angles) and unconventional framing.
STEP 2: DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Start your search by reading reviews from recent newlyweds
and browsing hundreds of local listings. Carefully review
potential photographers’ websites and blogs to check out
photos of other weddings they’ve shot, which will give you
16

WEDDING
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #71 | #71 WEDDING
an idea of their style. The design of
the website may also have clues about
the photographer’s personality and
sensibility... but also it may not, so keep
communicating with your photographer
to make sure he knows exactly what you
want.
STEP 3: SET UP INTERVIEWS
This is not a decision that can be made
on looks alone—you must meet your
potential photographers in person.
STEP 4: MAKE SURE YOU GET ON
Don’t underestimate the importance
of liking and bonding with your
photographer. Is the photographer
excited by your vision when you describe
it? When they make suggestions, do they
present them in a clear and respectful
way, or are they timid?
STEP 5: ASK ABOUT YOUR RIGHTS
Most contracts stipulate that the
photographer owns the rights to all
photos taken at the wedding, even
the ones of you. In other words,
the photographer can use them
promotionally (on their website or blog,
submit them for publication and even
place them in ads). Be aware!
STEP 6: POSTPRODUCTION DETAILS
It usually takes at least a month to get
all those photo proofs back from your
photographer. Why? Your photographer
is shooting enormous raw files far bigger
than your typical JPG. Shooting raw files
gives your photographer greater ability to
correct the photo, however, they should
also be using the correct light settings
initially, so if they are good, it shouldn’t be
too hard to edit the photos to your liking.
Until next time...
Lisa x
Helen Hird
At Bounce Magazine we love celebrating our local area
Helen Hird is a fashion and bridal
Harpers Bazaar, Jessica Bennett
Bespoke Bride and most recently
to a bespoke illustration fit for the dressmaker.
Alternatively, her wedding illustrations are a great
WEDDING
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #51 | #71 WEDDING
with a question: “My friend has just got married,
can you paint her in her dress?”
A light bulb went off, just like in a cartoon, and I
realised my passion could possibly become more
than just a hobby. This was over 4 years ago now
and I’ve never looked back.
Do you put yourself under pressure when
capturing someone’s image?
Sometimes it’s hard work being a one-woman
band.
and textured paint in a classic style. We speak to
Helen about her passion for illustrating.
When did you realise you had a passion for
weddings?
I have been borderline obsessed with weddings
and wedding dresses from quite an early age.
I used to dress my Barbie’s up for their big day
at least once a week, conduct ceremonies in the
school playground and keep an in-depth diary of
every tiny detail for my own future wedding.
I knew everything that I wanted, from the length
of my train to the shade of champagne dress I
would wear. I have, however, ditched the three 3ft
diamond-encrusted tiara and first dance to
S Club 7.
How did you discover illustration?
I went to college to study fashion and textiles; I
became really interested in illustration, doodling
my trademark little ladies at every opportunity.
I’d come home at the end of the college day and
instead of demolishing a packet of crisps and
putting on ‘Friends’ (like I did in my school days)
I’d get my water colours back out. I’d been doing
it all day, but I wasn’t tired of it. I kept going, as
a hobby, until one day someone approached me
There have been ups and downs. I’ve had many a
sleepless night, paint spillage and so much to learn
that I’ve felt like my brain is too small to cope.
On the flip-side, I’ve had a double-page spread
in Vogue, the honour to capture one of the most
special days in people’s lives and occupy a tiny bit
of wall space in homes up and down the country.
What would your younger self say to you
now?
I think the 7-year-old Helen, wearing a pillowcase
as a veil, would be proud!
The Red Barn its name, it has
a deceiving exterior that
belies the extraordinary
interior.
The Red Barn is lucky to experience some
beautiful sunsets showcasing Norfolk’s
‘big sky’ reputation at its best. The Red
Barn is a family-run venue and only host
one event per weekend ensuring
exclusive use.
This November they are hosting
a wedding fayre with over 60
fabulous local suppliers and
for the first time a fully set up
traditional marquee.
Traditional Norfolk brick walls
surround giant oak timbers
which in turn support the
cavernous roof making the red
barn an unforgettable venue.
The history of the barn, (dating back to at
least the 16th century), imbues the space with
a welcoming atmosphere creating a fabulous
backdrop to your celebrations.
Surrounded by mature trees and open fields
An ideal opportunity to come
and visit the Red barn, and to
plan your day no matter what
you have left to organise.
The fastest
win inside a
British ring...
SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #71
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
On the 24th November 1995
Sheffield born heavyweight
Pele Reid made his debut in
the professional ranks at the
Bowlers Exhibition Centre
in Manchester against Gary
Williams. Reid was expected to
win and did so easily stopping
his man in the first round of a
contest set for four.
Reid during the course of 1996
took part in six bouts and won
them all in fine style winning
four of his bouts in the opening
session. Two of the said
engagements took him to both
Italy and Germany which was a
good move since it was getting
him used to boxing outside of
the UK.
On the 28 June 1997 Reid won
his first championship when
he met Jamaican born Ricardo
Kennedy for the vacant World
Boxing Organisation Inter-
Continental heavyweight title at
the Sports Village, in Norwich
by a stoppage in the opening
stanza of twelve. This was his
seventh victory to come in the
first round in nine fights.
The Sheffield Arena in
Yorkshire saw Reid make the
first defence of the Inter-
Continental heavyweight title
on the 11 October 1997 against
an American in the shape of Eli
Dixon who lasted until the ninth
round in a contest schedule
for twelve before the referee
stepped in to stop the bout.
There was now a great deal
of excitement about Pele who
looked an exciting prospect a
man who had the potential to
create waves in the division and
hence go a long way.
In his fourteenth bout he
was matched with British &
Commonwealth heavyweight
champion Julius Francis for the
titles at the York Hall, Bethnal
Green in London on the 30 th
January 1999. Many pundits felt
that at the end of the evening
Reid would be crowned the
new champion. Francis showed
however that he was not in
the ring just up to make up
the numbers and turned in
an excellent performance to
retain the titles stopping Reid
in three rounds of a contest set
for twelve.
After the defeat to Francis, Reid
was never able to recapture
the magic of old since he won
seven drew two and lost five
of his next fourteen bouts.
Reid took part in his last
contest on the 7th March
2009 bowing out with a win
outpointing David Ingleby
over ten rounds to capture
the Vacant British Masters
Heavyweight title at the New
Bingley Hall in Birmingham.
Reid who was born on the 11
January 1973 may have failed
to have lived up to the high
expectations many had of him
by not winning the British and
Commonwealth heavyweight
titles and indeed by not going
beyond the domestic crown
to even higher honours like
the European championship.
However he can take a degree
of consolation from a bout
which had previously taken
place on the 25th February
1997. At the Hillsborough
Leisure Centre in Sheffield
opponent Michael Murray
from Lancashire dislocated his
shoulder in the first round of a
contest set for eight and thus
had to retire from the bout due
to the injury. This gave Reid the
record of gaining the fastest
ever win inside a British ring the
time being nine seconds.
During his career Reid compiled
a professional of 20 wins 6
defeats and 2 draws.
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 2018 | ISSUE | ISSUE #71 | #71 GABRIELLE
GABRIELLE
We speak to Gabrielle about her latest album ‘Under My Skin’...
As soon as you hear The Voice, you know
it can’t be anyone else. 25 years since her
debut single Dreams reached No.1 in the UK,
Gabrielle’s voice remains pure, seductive and
gloriously unique, one of the most compelling,
natural voices in British pop history. In a world
of beats-driven electro-pop and synthesised
auto-tune, my, how we’ve missed it.
Under My Skin is a lavishly-produced, classy
collection of irresistibly sing-along songs,
collaboratively created with producers and
writers behind Corrine Bailey Rae, Amy
Winehouse and Paloma Faith.
In late July 2018, the single Shine, an
orchestral pop epic written with production
super-Swedes Tobias
Lundgren and Tim
Larsson, was the No.1
most-played song
on Radio 2, its video
seeing Gabrielle
in a scarlet gown,
arms outstretched,
re-emerging as a
stately Grand Diva
of transcendental
grandeur.
Five million albums sold, 2 Brit Awards,
2 Mobos, an Ivor Novello in 2008 for
Outstanding Song Collection (after five
previous nominations) and Gabrielle is
acknowledged today as not only a stunning
vocalist but a writer of instantly memorable
melody. Under My Skin, her first studio album
in 11 years, is quintessential Gabrielle, who
“freestyles” over musical ideas, with no lyrics
yet written, to create her signature sound.
Since her fifth album Always in 2007,
Gabrielle’s been a working mum-of-two,
spending time on “the school run” (her
youngest is now 15), song-writing at home,
performing one-off shows across Europe and
promoting her 2013 Greatest Hits anniversary
collection Now and Always: 20 Years of
Dreaming.
Rachel Ducker catches up with Gabrielle to
here all about it.
R: Hi Gabrielle how are you today?
I am fine thank you, a bit
knackered, I did a show in
Birmingham last night, the album
launch, so I got to bed at 5am, and
so I am sorry if I am a bit slow this
morning!
R: I watched your show on your
Instagram story this morning and
it looked amazing!
[laughs] The audience were
amazing, they were phenomenal–they
were so lovely, and it was so hot, but
everybody persevered and it was
fantastic.
R: I can’t imagine how hot it must be on
stage with all the heat from the lights?
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #71 | #71 GABRIELLE
You know, it was crazy, but it was worth
every minute of it.
into the studio to write and record a song
together.
R: I bet! Well onto the first question, I
would love to know how you got into
music?
The producers liked my voice, and
afterwards they said, “we really like your
tone”.
Oh my gosh! Well, I’ve always been into
music in general; I loved listening to all
of the greats such as Michael Jackson,
Madonna, all the pop stuff and the stuff
from my mum’s music collection.
I was always singing but never imagined I
would ever have a career out of it. I
remember as a teenager watching ‘Top
of the Pops’ and ‘Fame’, way before your
time… I loved all of the characters and I
just really loved music.
Although I should have been more loyal to
my friend, she was about ten years older
than me and had already had her own
record released, when I was asked by the
producers to come back, I snapped their
hand off.
Obviously, she found out, and we weren’t
friends again but hey, you know, I was a
young girl and I was in pursuit of having
my own record like she did. So that’s how
it happened, yeah.
It wasn’t until my cousin’s boyfriend
entered a fashion show at a club
called ‘Moonlighting’ and they wanted
entertainment as well as models, so my
cousin put me forward, and I said “no I
cant do it, I cant do that”!
After I went back into the studio I was
then put out on a white label and ahead of
my recording label signing me, the white
label had fallen into their hands and they
came looking for me so that was how I
was put on the radar.
She said “but you love singing”? and I
responded “no, no not in front of people”!
Somehow she twisted my arm, and
although I was scared I wanted to do it.
Come the night I was on edge, I was so
nervous. I was waiting for my mum to
arrive and I was literally pushed on stage
to sing a Luther Vandross cover song
called ‘Any Love’, so that was my first
introduction to public singing.
R: How did you get your big break?
Right so, by me singing at ‘Moonlighting’
I ended up dating a guy who paid for me
to go to a recording studio with my friend,
and her boyfriend paid for her. So we went
R: What music inspired you growing up?
My musical tastes are diverse, bearing in
mind I have a 15-year-old daughter who
loves a bit of Drake, I am the ‘pop tart’ in
my house. I love Britney, Pink, Sam Smith,
James Arthur and Jay-Z and Beyonce.
I go from one to the other, so, what you’d
expect from this middle-aged woman is
not what I am giving you, I just love pop
music. I grew up as an 80s child so it
was like Spandau Ballet, a bit of Michael
Jackson, I love Nirvana, The Beatles, and
Oasis.
R: Well believe it or not, I grew up
listening to you, so it’s surreal for me to
Darlin’ [laughs]
R: My mum always played your albums…
Lewis Hamilton was telling me the same
thing, loads of mum’s force their children
to listen to me, [laughs] but that’s really
lovely…
R: Oh, I am not complaining!
to myself “your mad what’s the point of
having a husband if he isn’t helping”, but
my mum was always like, “I want to see if I
can do that, and do this”, so she did.
A lot of women do it now. I admired her,
but she’s scary in that sense, a lot of
people don’t have that energy. She has
more energy than I could ever have.
R: Your debut single was ‘Dreams’ in 1993
– does that feel like along time ago now?
You’re so cute though I love it! Makes me
realise how old I am [laughs]
R: You’re not old! I am sure you are the
coolest mum going as well?
Oh you’re a diamond thank you very much!
I should bring you over to tell my kids that!
R: Speaking of mum’s, I’ve read lots about
your mum being a very strong woman
and a single parent, bringing yourself and
your brothers up and holding down a few
jobs… I mean that’s incredible.
Yes, she used to work for the Ministry of
Defence, and then she’d do a tailoring job,
and also do some piece work, so that was
making pieces for smart trousers and suits.
Then later on she qualified as a social
worker.
I am telling you this, and thinking, my
mum, she’s a gangster, she was definitely
a gangster, in the sense of holding down
three jobs, looking after four kids and
doing it for herself.
I say this because she was married, and I
remember coming home one day and I just
see her laying on the carpet and I thought
Yeah, 25 years, it came out 7th June 1993.
It’s quite funny as my son is 23 years old,
so it was two years after, and the fact that
its still one of his favourite songs I am like,
wow.
R: I think it’s still one of a lot of people’s
favourite songs.
It’s lovely that year’s later people still tweet
how fresh it sounds and I love that.
The success came about because people
took it to their hearts and loved it and kind
of made my dreams come true and after
all this time I can still go out and do what
I love.
R: If you hadn’t had got into music what
do you think you would be doing now?
Oh, easy… I wanted to work with children.
I do love kids… although I can’t wait to get
away from mine most of the time [laughs]
no I am kidding.
I have been a mum for all of these years
and it nice that now they can find their own
way, but yeah I think I would be working
with kids in some way, shape or form.
R: One of my favourite songs is ‘Rise’,
you probably hear that all of the
time?
No, I love that, I never take that for
granted. A lot of the time people pick out
my favourites anyway. So I am happy ‘Rise’
is your favourite.
R: Do you have a favourite song to
perform?
Right, I’ve got a few, ‘Rise’ is definitely one
of them, I love the response.
I also love ‘Sunshine’ and ‘When a
Woman’, that’s a song that makes
everyone’s booty move! I also love that I
can be a bit of a bully with that song, I can
get everyone up and dancing! [laughs]
Lastly, ‘Dreams’, and I probably shouldn’t
say this, but that is the song I leave to last
as it’s one of my favourites that was the
song that launched me.
R: You’re known for styling your look
with an eye patch or a streak of hair, due
to an eye condition named Ptosis…
I actually didn’t know what the condition
was until I read it in a newspaper.
Yeah, I just call it a lazy eye. It creates
a lazy eye; and have had it since I was
young.
I had an operation as it was a
deadeye muscle and they removed it.
It’s one of those things where it’s better
than not seeing, so when people think I
don’t have an eye, no I have got two, just
one of them is quite sleepy looking.
It’s not something that I show. Some
people have this in both their eyes,
so I am just grateful its in just one of
mine. I have covered it with an eye patch,
sunglasses and now it is just hair, but
I love that; I love the fact that this is
just me.
R: I think now a days its so hard when
the young girls look at people in the
media and sadly they can become selfconscious
about the tiniest of things, I
wondered what advice you would give
them?
I think like you said; they have these
images of what they think women should
look like, but women don’t actually look
like that, with these filters, and thinned out
effects, so for me, I think you have to be
yourself and do you.
I grew up at an all girl’s school, they were
bitchy and I had a lazy eye and people
would make jokes about it. I had the last
laugh, as later on I would be out there
making music. You just have to believe in
yourself, if you don’t believe in you, how
can anyone else?
I could have let my condition hold me
back but, I decided to get a big eye patch
and I draw all the attention to it.
R: I think that was my point of the
question, I think you’ve been inspiring
and I think that anyone else with any self
doubts or any similar conditions about
themselves will be inspired by that too.
I hope so; I had a lot of letters from mum’s
with children who were wearing eye
patches, who didn’t have eyes.
It was a case of; I was glad to represent
people who were different, or not
even different, but even if you’ve lost a
limb, it doesn’t stop us being humans,
or having feelings, we are people after all
you know?
Sometimes you have to speak up and not
suffer in silence.
For example, if someone is bullying you,
you go and tell someone.
R: What track do you enjoy listening to
the most on the new album?
Oh my god, again, I’ll tell you, there’s ‘Show
Me’ and I love ‘Shine’, I have also got a
song called ‘Every Step’, I wrote that for a
friend of mine who was going through a
really bad time in her relationship and like
myself, I am not good at taking advice but I
am good at giving it.
The fact I came out and was able to
showcase it and show people that you can
reach your full potential no matter what
the issue is was important to me.
You can’t tell a close friend to walk away
from it all, even though you’d like to, it’s
not your place, so I thought ok, all you can
do is sit and listen.
R: Thank you for answering that question,
I didn’t want to raise it if you didn’t want
to discuss it?
So I wrote ‘Every Step’ for them. There are
so many different songs; ‘Thank You’ is one
we put out for the fans.
Oh no, I am one of these people who
are very open, I think the more you can
speak about stuff the more people can be
inspiring, you just have to accept yourself
and be proud of who you are.
R: Is it the same music style we are used
to hearing?
Oh… so on this album its very much, people
keep saying, not me, ‘classic Gabrielle’.
I am happy to talk about it but you must
know, I’ve go more rabbit than Sainsburys
[laughs] Gab by name and Gab by nature
[laughs]
I’ve gone off and done country music and
things in the past, but this album is pop
with the contrast of old school retro, with
a bit of soul.
R: Bless you! [laughs] Your back now with
your 6th studio album, ‘Under My Skin’…
can you tell us more about that?
If you hear it, you’ll have a better
understanding. There’s Gabrielle soul in
there!
I am loving it, because it took a while, 11
years, and now it’s just a case, of doing
show cases around the country.
R: Thank you so much for your time,
wishing you all the very best for the
album launch!
It’s such a fun time because it had been
so long, and I felt my audience were truly
worthy of new material because I have
been singing the same stuff for the last 11
years and beyond! It’s great to be back.
It’s a pleasure to have talked to you. You
take care my darling.
Is Change Good for You?
I don’t’ know why, but I always view
September as the month which
proposes the most change, I imagine
it goes back to my school days where
September meant “Back to School”.
But is change a good thing? How well do you
accept and cope with change?
Do you accept or fight change?
Our brains are superb at doing the same thing
over and over again, we are just wired that way.
So when a big change occurs, it can be very
unsettling, especially when that change is not
within our control.
We can’t stop certain things happening to us, lets
face it life can really suck sometimes, but what we
can control is how we react to it.
Is change good for us?
Change can be good for us as Winston Churchill
said “a change is as good as a rest”.
Lots of good can come from change, it can
help push us out of our comfort zone so we
can experience more, it can also make us more
flexible and adaptable, it can also allow us to have
more fun.
Take a moment to think of one great experience
you’ve had and I imagine, it was in some shape
or form, connected to a change that occurred in
your life.
What do you choose?
Change is a part of life, sometimes we have
control over the changes in our lives and
sometimes not but we always have a choice of
how we react to change.
We have a choice to embrace the change and
allow good to come from it or resist it, which can
lead to feelings of anxiety or unease.
So the next time a big change occurs in your life
take a moment to think about how you choose to
react to it, accept or fight it! It’s your choice.
MOUNTAIN
POSE
(tah -DAHS-anna)
Benefits
Improves posture
Strengthens thighs, knees, and ankles
Firms abdomen and buttocks
Relieves sciatica
Reduces flat feet
Cautions:
Headache
Insomnia
Low blood pressure
How to try the pose:
1. Stand with the bases of your big toes touching,
heels slightly apart (so that your second toes are
parallel).
Lift and spread your toes and the balls of your
feet, then lay them softly down on the floor. Rock
back and forth and side to side. Gradually reduce
this swaying to a standstill, with your weight
balanced evenly on the feet..
2. Firm your thigh muscles and lift the knee
caps, without hardening your lower belly. Lift the
inner ankles to strengthen the inner arches, then
imagine a line of energy all the way up along
your inner thighs to your groins, and from there
through the core of your torso, neck, and head,
and out through the crown of your head.
Turn the upper thighs slightly inward. Lengthen
your tailbone toward the floor and lift the pubis
toward the navel.
3. Press your shoulder blades into your back,
then widen them across and release them down
your back. Without pushing your lower front
ribs forward, lift the top of your sternum straight
toward the ceiling. Widen your collarbones. Hang
your arms beside the torso.
4. Balance the crown of your head directly over
the center of your pelvis, with the underside of
your chin parallel to the floor, throat soft, and the
tongue wide and flat on the floor of your mouth.
Soften your eyes.
5. Tadasana is usually the starting position for
all the standing poses. But it’s useful to practice
Tadasana as a pose in itself. Stay in the pose for
30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing easily.
Beginner’s Tip:
You can improve your balance in this pose by
standing with your inner feet slightly apart,
anywhere from 3 to 5 inches.
Deepen the Pose:
You can challenge your balance by practicing
this pose with your eyes closed. Learn to
balance without any reference to the outer
environment.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure
please attend a class or ask for a
private lesson.
Emily Fazah is 28 years old, originally from
Suffolk, she moved back from London a
couple of years ago after working for a
recording and publishing company.
She decided that the 9-5 office slog was not
suited to my lifestyle and decided to move back
to greener pastures… Moody Girl was created
by Emily after years of suffering in silence with
severe PMS.
She explains, “From the age of 15 onwards I
noticed a huge difference in the way I suffered
with my periods compared to other girls at
school. When trying to open up about both the
psychological and physical effects it had on me I
realised that this wasn’t something people spoke
about honestly and from then on I learnt to
suffer in silence and to just get on with it. There
came a point when I just couldn’t ‘get on with
it’ any longer and I decided to speak with my
local GP. Unfortunately, my woes were met with
the same blank expressions. All that was offered
was the contraceptive pill (which sent my moods
completely wild) or anti-depressants, which I
refused to take, as I knew deep down this wasn’t
depression”.
“Finally, after extensive research I was referred to
the Chelsea and Westminster PMS clinic where
I spoke to the first doctor who understood why
I had been suffering all these years and since
then things have got much better. For so many
years I felt so alone and like no one else was
going through the same as what I was. But then
I thought to myself ‘what if other women have
been suffering in silence like I have?’ It was then
that I decided to start Moody Girl, aiming to
open a line of communication between women
suffering with premenstrual conditions”.
Moody Girl has an online forum for women to
chat through everything menstrual related. The
best way to be involved is to sign up and post
any questions you may have or answer existing
questions asked by other users.
The story of
Sherry
Jerez in Spain was a centre of viticulture in Spain in about
1100 BC but the Romans had a bigger influence after.
were vanquished, production of Sherry as we know
it began again. Sir Francis Drake after sacking
Cadiz in 1587 brought back 2,900 barrels of Sherry.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
This was around 200 BC when the Moors
conquered the area in AD 711 the art of distillation
became known, introducing brandy and thus
fortified wine. During the Moorish period the town
was called Sherish which would seem to be the
likely source of the name Sherry.
Although Arab rule dictated that all vineyards
should be destroyed, some were allowed to
produce raisins and table grapes.
In 1264 when Alfonso took the city and the Moors
From that moment on Sherry became a popular
drink in the British Isles.
Production...
Sherry, by law must come from the triangular
area between, Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de
Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria and
mostly from the Palomino grape.
The climate in this area has about 300 days of
sun each year, dry and hot. It is moderated a
little by winds bringing moisture from the ocean.
Temperatures can often reach 40 C.
The soils in this area are quite unique formed
from:
52

FOOD & DRINK
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 #71 | ISSUE | FOOD #71 & DRINK
ALBARIZA - The lightest soil, almost white, best
for the Palomino. 40% chalk and the rest clay and
sand.
BARROS - Dark brown soil, 10% chalk and high
clay percentage.
ARENAS - A Yellowish soil, 10% chalk and a high
sand content.
Barros and Arenas grow mostly Pedro Ximenez
grapes.
Two main grapes are used, the Palomino and the
Pedro Ximenez. Most sherry uses the Palomino,
producing a very neutral and plain wine. This
simple style is enhanced by the sherry process.
The Pedro Ximenez (PX) is used for
sweetness.
Wine is made from the Palomino
with the first pressing making
what are called Fino and
Manzanilla sherries. The
second pressing is used for
Olorosos. After fermentation
the wines are graded as suitable
for Finos or Amontillados. To
these are added brandy to fortify
it to 15% alcohol. Other more heavier
wines can be suitable for Olorosos and are
fortified to 17.5% alcohol.
Ageing...
The fortified wines are stored in 500 litre
American oak casks (called Butts) A space is left
at the top of the barrel to allow flor to develop on
top of the wine. This is an airborne fungus which
resembles a topping of custard. The flor can
remain intact or can deteriorate and this leads to
the difference between Finos , with complete
Flor or Olorosos with damaged flor.
They are then put into a Solera system, from
which each year a new layer of barrels are
formed. As wine is finally sold from the oldest,
those barrels are topped up from the previous
years, and that from its own previous year. In this
way the system can keep going with each year
topping up the one before it, so this can go for
many years. Normally this is about 12 years and
a new Solera is started. It could last for 30, 40 or
even longer number of years.
Types of Sherry...
FINO - The driest and palest, must be drunk soon
after opening.
MANZANILLA - A Fino made near
Sanlucar de Barrameda which has a
salty taste, from proximity to the sea.
AMONTILLADO - Like a Fino but
where the flor got damaged leading
to oxygen exposure. Darker then
Fino.
OLOROSO - Oxidised for longer than
Fino, darker and richer, can be 18 to
20% alcohol. Can be sweetened.
PALO CORTADO - Started life as an
Amontillado but developed like an Olorosos, or
flor killed by fortification
SWEET - Uses dried PX grapes and is intensely
sweet and dark.
CREAM - First made in the 1860s by blending
different sherries including Olorosos and Pedro
Ximenez.
The range of sugar content of sherries goes from
0 to 5 grams per litre for Finos, and up to 212
grams per litre for Pedro Ximenez.
Conclusions...
Although less popular in recent years it is seeing a comeback and various shows on TV
feature it in the script. It was at one time thought of as the best wine in the world and could
be said to be among the best.
Mascarpone
tart with
boozy peaches
The rough puff pastry is
contrasted nicely by the
smooth, creamy mascarpone
and sweet, boozy peaches in
this gorgeous tart recipe...
1. Put all the ingredients for the peaches
(apart from the peaches) in a small pan and
heat until the sugar has dissolved. Pour into
a mixing bowl and add the peaches, making
sure they’re submerged in the liquid. Cover the
bowl and marinate for 30 minutes.
2. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
Roll out the pastry until it’s a rough 20cm x
30cm rectangle the thickness of a £1 coin. Put
on a baking sheet lined with non-stick baking
paper, then lightly score a 3cm border around
the edges. Brush all over the pastry with the
beaten egg and sprinkle a little sugar around
the border. Bake for 15-20 minutes until
golden and puffed. Take out of the oven, then
gently push the centre back down with a fish
slice and leave the pastry to cool completely.
Ingredients
• 300g Mascarpone Cream
• 320g Puff Pastry
For the peaches
• 200ml vin santo (or other sweet wine)
• 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways
• 15g caster sugar
• 1 star anise
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 3 fresh lemon thyme sprigs, plus a few
extra sprigs to serve
• 5 ripe peaches, cut into 1cm slices
3. Mix the mascarpone with the icing sugar
and lemon zest in a mixing bowl until well
combined. Spread the mixture over the pastry
base, inside the border. Scatter the peaches
over the tart along with a few sprigs of lemon
thyme, then drizzle over some of the reduced
marinade.
Summer fun by the River Waveney...
With the end of the summer
season on 10 September in
sight, 2018 looks like being a
record season at Beccles Lido.
With glorious weather at the
beginning of the summer holidays,
what seemed like all of East Anglia
descended on Beccles to swim in one
of the region’s only heated openair
swimming pools. With its slide,
springboard, giant inflatable, lane
swimming til 10am and café serving
hot and cold food, Beccles Lido is
the perfect destination for an early
morning swim or a family day out.
More information at www.beccleslido.
com.
Following a huge fundraising
campaign in 2017, the Lido was
transformed for 2018 with new toilets
and a re-landscaped patio area. The toddler pools were also
completely revamped and for 2019 the main pool has to be
re-furbished, upgraded and re-lined. This final upgrade in an
ambitious 2 year project to Secure Beccles Lido’s Future is
the most expensive project since Beccles Lido Limited took
over the pool in 2009. The community is being urged to get
involved and help raise funds to persuade larger grant funders
to invest the £150,000+ required. Nearly half the community
fundraising target of £15,000 has already been raised and
over £35,000 in total. To learn more or to help please visit
uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/NewLiner.
You can also help by visiting the Lido’s big annual fundraiser –
Beccles Beer Festival, 16-18 November at Beccles Public Hall.
When the Lido closes it’s not the end of the fun as the Lido
also operates Big Dog Ferry until October. So why not book a
passenger boat trip between Beccles Lido and Geldeston Locks
Inn, a relaxing 3 mile boat journey along the River Waveney
with the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife en-route – otters,
kingfishers and marsh harriers are all regular sights. Find out
more at www.bigdogferry.co.uk or call 07532 072761.
Beccles Lido has been voted one of the 50 best things to do in Suffolk!
Ross promoted to Head Chef after impressing
all at Ravenwood Hall...
When Ross Cook was looking for the
perfect venue for his fairytale wedding,
he admitted he fell in love with
Ravenwood Hall on first sight.
Little did he know that he would be returning
to the beautiful and historic setting just a few
months later as an integral member of staff.
Fast forward to the present day and Ross is
happily married to Laura after their wonderful
wedding–while having double reason to celebrate
after being named the new head chef at the
prestigious hotel and restaurant.
Ross impressed all at the hotel and restaurant
during a two-year spell at Ravenwood as Sous
Chef.
So when the position of running the entire kitchen
came up, Craig Jarvis, owner of Ravenwood,
admitted it was an easy decision to make.
It was particularly special for Ross, 27, who had
got married at the seven-acre estate – booking
his wedding venue even before joining the team.
Ross, who boasts a number of top hotels and
restaurants in Ipswich and Needham Market
on his impressive CV, said: “I originally came to
Ravenwood as I knew all about its reputation in
the local area.
“I had always dreamed that one day I would be
the Head Chef at Ravenwood and I jumped at the
chance when it was offered to me.
“It has a very high standard of cuisine and I am
looking forward to continuing that and then
enhancing it to ensure Ravenwood continues to
have a reputation as the place-to-go in the local
area.”
Ross knew all about the beautiful setting at
Ravenwood after he and his now wife, Laura,
chose to get married there–with the ceremony
held in May of this year.
He explained: “When we first looked at
Ravenwood Hall in 2015, we just fell in love with
this stunning place with its amazing grounds,
wedding pavilion and a hotel steeped in tradition.
To now be the Head Chef here is a dream come
true.”
Ross is now busy preparing Ravenwood’s new
autumn menu before embarking on his first
Christmas leading the kitchen.
SUFFOLK ESCAPE ROOM
AND HAPPY DAYS RV
If you are looking for a a bit of mystery mixed with a
funky vintage vacation, then look no further...
Suffolk Escape Room is
situated in the unique
location of an original war
time Nissen Hut on the edge
of an American style Trailer
Park, Happy Days Retro
Vacations - the perfect duo.
You can have 2-8 players and once inside, players must find
hidden clues and solve puzzles that will lead them towards
escape.
Bounce Magazine were thrilled to be invited along to take on
the Suffolk Escape Room challenge and enjoy a stay on site at
Happy Days Retro Vacations. Here’s what we thought.
So what is an Escape Room? An
Escape Room is a live immersive
experience.
“As we walked up to the Suffolk Escape Room, the suspense
was killing us... We all wondered what was awaiting us behind
that door!
Players are ‘locked’ in a room and
must solve a series of puzzles within
60 minutes in order to escape an
Area 51 theme. Common sense goes
a long way!
Equipped with a walkie-talkie, we were sent into the room. As
the door closed, we were suddenly transformed into a band of
determined UFO hunters, and yes we did take on the roles very
seriously! Our mission was to search the room thoroughly, and
as a team we had to work out how to escape.
We had one hour to crack all the puzzles that hid
in the depths of the room.
It was also at this point that everyone’s
competitive streak took over… the countdown to
escape had begun.
annoyingly obvious that we kicked ourselves
about it afterwards. We ended up making it out
in 50 minutes 57 seconds, which we were told
wasn’t a bad first attempt. We were buzzing after
the game and wanted to go back in time and do
it all again.
I am absolutely fascinated with UFO’s and
paranormal activity, so this theme was right up
my street. Secretly, in my head, I was pretending I
was Dana Scully, (I grew up watching the X Files)
- I didn’t tell anyone else that, I had my own fun
with it!
We whizzed through the first few puzzles with
ease, but sometimes it the most obviously things
that create the hurdles! The last puzzle was so
Camping with a twist...
A stay in this ‘space age’ looking airstream
complements the UFO themed, Suffolk
Escape Rooms theme nicely.
Set on a peaceful campsite
just a short distance from the
famous site at Rendlesham,
further up the A12, you will
find a unique, kitch camping
experience.
I absolutely love camping, but
sometimes I can be put off by the
hassle of putting up a tent, and setting
up home in a muddy field.
So I was delighted when I was offered to the
opportunity to try out some camping with full on
added glamour?
Yes, I am talking about Glamping… a way
to connect with nature with all of
your usual hotel-style comforts in
a lovingly restored vintage chic
airstream. Now doesn’t that
sound cool?
Staying in ‘Peggy’, one of seven
airstreams owned by Kevin and
Jenni Armstrong, came complete
with a double bedroom, dining couch
that turns into an extra bed, a kitchen
area and toilet, complete with an outdoor dining
area and very own fire pit. You don’t have to
worry about packing anything except your own
clothing and towels, everything else is provided,
you can even hire the optional bedding to save
space and washing on your return home.
Like me, you will also be surprised to find
it includes a fridge, cooker, TV, radio, not
forgetting complimentary marshmallows,
perfect for star gazing by the fire pit. Keeping
as many of their retro details as possible, the
airstreams still have their original wooden veneers,
brightened up homely details, patterned curtains,
fairy lights and bunting.
Glamorous camping is becoming the stylish way
to enjoy the outdoors, and we loved our two-night
break away at Happy Days, a perfect retreat for all
the family right by the beautiful surroundings of the
BLACK HONEY
Bursting out of the ether in 2014 with their squalling guitars, vivid colours and
cinematic vignettes, there’s no other British band out there quite like Black Honey.
Having spent the last four years perfecting
the indie game, everything you think you
know about them and their unique surrealist
world is about to be wonderfully shaken
up as they prepare to release their hugely
anticipated debut album.
With contradiction at every turn, it’s an
album that celebrates being
human, in all its different
forms and by doing so,
will touch the hearts of
everyone that hears it.
We’ve already heard ‘Bad
Friends’ earlier this year, but
with the exception of 2016’s
‘Hello, Today’ (the track
that saw the band become
a household name at Radio 1), and the 2017
closer ‘Dig’, the album is made up of entirely
new music with 9 brand new songs on offer.
band – Tom Dewhurst (drums), Tom Taylor
(bass) and Chris Ostler (guitar) – to channel
everything that comes from her obsessive
and dizzyingly creative head and bottle it into
music.
The album as a result is ultimately a collage
of chaos, shot straight at the heart – honest,
inspiring and deeply infectious.
Rachel Ducker caught up with
Izzy B Phillips, songwriter,
front woman, and all-round
creative force behind guitarpop
band Black Honey,
R: Hey Izzy…
Hello right I’m ready for you.
R: Could you tell me about how you initially
got involved with music?
Across the entirety of the record, you can
always feel the bare bones of front lady Izzy
B Phillips diary scribbles are just around the
corner as the varying tracks switch between
chart-headed bangers and scuzzy, industrial
David Lynch inspired strangeness.
I did the whole theatre school, singing thing
when I was a kid, and really hated it! [laughs]
I was in all of the musicals, I quite liked the
songs but I didn’t really like the way that
people would sing them.
It’s the weird and wonderful mind of Phillips
- her lovable but villainous, Milky-Bar-kidmeets-Debbie
Harry persona – that you find
very much at the heart of ‘Black Honey’. An
open sufferer of both dyslexia and ADHD,
she’s a huge advocate for self-expression
without limit and has relied hugely on her
When I was young, my dad said to me, “you’ve
got a musical ear”, and I was like “what’s a
musical ear”? So he said “its an inner ear”.
So I remember going around the school
playground going “I’ve got a musical inner ear,
it’s an ear inside my head that hears music
better than everyone else”. [laughs]
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 #71 | ISSUE | BLACK #71 HONEY
R: Amazing, well what a start! Who were
your musical influences growing up?
Well, I don’t actually have any memory of
there being records played in our house.
My dad used to play the jazz trumpet and
also played the piano. I remember watching
him over his shoulder once and watched it
long enough that I kind of learnt it. Which is
amazing, as now I can’t learn anything, it takes
me hours to even learn my own songs!
R: When did your music career actually
begin?
I would say officially, when we launched Black
Honey and we started touring. I had been
writing songs for ages and I was in many
bands, but I just used to play on the local
Brighton scene. We never really did anything,
and then when we formed Black Honey
people were like, “hey do you want to come
to Holland and be on the radio”? And we were
like “whoa this had suddenly become a thing,
this is very real”.
were listening to a lot of grunge and 70’s
rock anyway so it was quite natural for us to
develop that into what is now Black Honey.
R: How did you find your gang of
collaborators? Could you tell me about how
the four of you met and came to create Black
Honey?
So I met Chris in college, and we started
playing guitar together. Then we met Tommy
because he was living with Chris at the
time and he was a drummer whilst we went
through a string of bass players, and then we
couldn’t find a bass player so we made Tommy
play bass and roped Tom in to play drums - it
was only meant to be a short term thing, but
he is still here to this day and now he’s like
everyone’s favourite member.
R: Where did the band name come from?
It’s like bitter sweet, light and dark, you know,
contrast. Everything contrasts and it’s a
beautiful thing.
R: Did you have a vision in mind when you
were first starting the band?
R: They always say there is no light without
the dark.
Yeah! It was really strange, I remember telling
the guys I wanted to make this retro, almost
rival idea, and everyone was just like “what
the f*ck is she talking about, she sounds
completely mental”? So I was like “just hear
me out”. I then I made a college out with Liz
Savage and I started looking at guitar tones
that to me spoke 60’s cinema, and then it was
the time when Lana Del Rae started coming
through.
Then everyone kind of had a point of reference
and seemed to understand that vintage kind
of idea. So I said imagine if we did a retro
rock and roll band and then from there we
went into a complete rabbit hole. Before we
Yeah exactly!
R: How do you approach writing?
I like to use different technique;, I think of
writing as an evolving process, so I like to
write lyrics in a journal. I write a lot of poems,
at the moment I am more poem based than
chords, I’m sort of board of the guitar at the
moment. Sometimes I will just take the poems
into the boys and be like “hey, what’s up I’ve
got this poem lets make something out of
this”, and other times I will write an entire
song on an acoustic guitar and will go in and
be like “yo! this whole songs done” and we will
just go for it.
R: Your self-titled debut album is coming out
on 21 st September.
Yeah, it’s my birthday!
R: Oh wow, well happy birthday for then!
What it’s like to play new tracks from the
album live?
We’ve been playing a lot of them live already,
for example, we’ve been playing ‘Midnight’
since March, mainly because it’s the hardest
song in the world to sing!
So we needed a good six-month buildup
before it comes out to get comfy with it. We
are just piecing together all of the last bits
for the upcoming shows and its rewarding, its
really rewarding. It feels really good.
R: You’ve released four EPs over four years,
why’s it the right time for you to finally
release your debut album?
I think because I felt I had so much more
to say. You only get one shot at your debut
album. Previously we did 6 weeks on the road
in arenas and I came back thinking, “nah I
need a song I can play in arenas and its going
to go off”! So then I came back and wrote five
songs for the record between December and
January.
I think the highlight would have to be Queens
of the Stone Age, opening the main stage
the day after we announced the album, when
we all had our wicked jackets on. There is no
better feeling in the world than when your
with your four best mates on stage having the
best time of your life.
R: We are actually right by Latitude, I think
you played there too…
Yeah, I loved Latitude, I think that was my
discovery of this year. It was brilliant, people
can go swimming in a lake, they have nice
cocktail bars; I love cocktails and I am usually
on a mission at festivals to find one bar, and
there were like six at Latitude.
R: You have your own tour starting in
October; can you tell us more about that?
Yeah, we are really stoked, we are hitting the
road in October and coming to Norwich and
f*ck loads of towns; we are going to play the
sh*t out of the record. We’ve got some crazy
merch, we’ve got a new light show coming
for you, it’s all kicking off. We also have some
special limited edition vinyl’s – double picture
disc deluxe, which will have lips on the actual
record.
R: How can people get a copy?
R: What do you want people to take away
from the album?
I want people to be like “Oh my f*cking god,
what has just happened to me”! But at the
same time thinking, “I didn’t expect that but
actually it’s so addictive”, I want people to feel
addicted.
R: You’ve been playing the festival scene
pretty hard this year, what’s been your
festival highlight so far?
Its available on our website www.blackhoney.
backstreetmerch.com or any of our social
media pages.
R: Once the tour is finished, what are the
plans for the rest of the year?
We have a big European tour, it’s dead
exciting! I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole
life to do this tour. Then next year it’s going to
be crazy we are going to be playing live shows
all around the world yeah watch this space!
Mile Stone
BIRTHDAYS
If you hadn’t guessed I’m a
September baby! So I thought
I’d write a little something to
celebrate BY RUBY this REED month.
All birthdays are
special, and I have
always been one to
make a fuss when
it’s someone else’s.
But it’s also very nice when
someone makes a fuss of ours
isn’t it? Especially when it’s a
big one.
A milestone birthday should
be something good to look
back at.
You’ll definitely find yourself
thinking ‘What did I do?’ on my eighteenth, twentyfirst,
thirtieth- fiftieth! So make sure it’s a good
memory.
Maybe it’ll be a memorable present. For example, if
you are buying someone something for a milestone
birthday, it would be great if it was something to
last. Then when looking back the person actually has
something from this day. This has been done for me
with a piece of jewellery- and each bit means a lot to
me.
Depending on who you are buying for, different gift
ideas will be appropriate. Consider a piece of art.
Alongside memorable presents are obviously
memorable moments. Memories last a lifetime
remember! So a great idea for a milestone birthday is
an experience.
84

SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #71 | #71 LIFESTYLE
Example - What did you do
for your 30 th ? - Oh that’s
easy to remember- a hot
air balloon ride!
I have mentioned before
I’m a fan of experience
days and there are so
many that would make the
perfect gift for a special
birthday.
A track day for the guys,
wine tasting for the classy!
What about going away?
Travelling and experiencing
a new location is always
something we remember.
It’s away from the norm
and a well-deserved treat
on your birthday!
I remember being in France for my
twenty-first and always will.
Of course don’t forget your other
option… PARTY! As big or as small as you
like. Friend or family, or both! If you ask
me, there aren’t enough parties these
days.
They seem to stop when we get past 14…
Well I think grown up parties may have
to be the next thing. A great excuse to
get glamorous. And yes you can have a
theme if you want to- great idea.
We only get one birthday a year so make
it count, however old!
SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 | #71 ISSUE | #71 HISTORY
Who was
Ethel Clara Neave?...
Ethel was born in Diss
on 22 January 1883
to Water William and
Charlotte Anne.
She would later qualify as a
typist, and by 1900 calling
herself Ethel Le Neave she was
hired by Dr Hawley Harvey
Crippen who would later on
be hanged for the murder and
mutilation of his wife Cora in
1910.
The Crippen’s resided at
Hilldrop Crescent, Holloway,
London. Cora was a musichall
artiste whose stage name
was Belle Elmore and she
flaunted her many lovers to her
husband.
A love affair started in 1905
and after the murder they
decided to leave the country
and sailed on the SS Montrose
across the Atlantic where
Ethel, who was dressed as
boy became the suspicion of
the ship’s master. The couple
were listed as Mr Robinson
and Son. For the first time,
a telegraph was sent from a
ship to Scotland Yard stating
‘Crippen and Miss Le Neve are
on the Montrose’. Scotland
Yard sent Chief Inspector Drew
to Canada to arrest both and
to extradite them both back to
England.
After the trial where Ethel was
exonerated of complicity to
murder she refused to talk to
anyone regarding the event
and three hours after Crippen
was hanged at Pentonville she
sailed to New York on the SS
Majestic using the name Miss
Allen. During the journey she
remained dressed in mourning
with her face kept under a veil.
She later worked in Toronto
for three years and then under
the name Ethel Harvey she
returned to London to work for
a furniture company and it was
there that she met and married
Stanley Smith in January 1915
and they settled in Croydon
where they had two children.
An interesting fact is that
biologist Professor William
Wright was to testify, but
never called, but it was said
that he had evidence that
Ethel had spent time in the
Royal College of Surgeons
Library reading books on
toxicology.
Ethel’s last days were spent
living in a house between
Catford and Lower Sydenham,
London in total obscurity, as
she had done since the trial,
passing away on 9 August 1967
from heart failure aged 84.
Interest in Ethel over the years
never died and in the early
1980s her children Bob and
Nina received a letter from a
crime writer asking to meet
to discuss Ethel’s life and
that of the murder of Cora
Crippen. Both children had no
knowledge of their mother’s
involvement and were stunned
to say the least but did agree
to see the writer where they
learnt so much but were so
sad on what their mother had
gone through over the years.
Both agreed that their mother
had been rather straight-laced.
Letters from Ethel to Crippen
were buried with him and a
locket with a photo of Crippen
was placed close to Ethel’s
heart just as the coffin was
closed.
THETFORD
Set in the heart of Britain’s largest lowland
pine forest, is Go Ape, a unique adventure
park...
From treetops to Segways, be prepared to test
your swing, balance and grip. This challenging
but fun course will certainly put you through your
paces, all surrounded by a backdrop of beautiful,
green pines and a few bewildered squirrels.
The Bounce team were invited to test the course
at Thetford Forest and first up was Forest
Segways. We arrived 10 minutes before our
allotted time and were given a list of rules to
read and a waiver form to sign. The kind people
behind the desk were
able to look after all
of our belongings, so
don’t worry if you have
bags and picnics, they
will be stored in a safe
place.
Before exploring the
forest on our own, we
acquainted ourselves
with a self-balancing, all-terrain, electric
Segway, but not without a safety briefing and
training session first.
The key is to relax your knees and push your feet
downwards. Turning is easy; simply move the
handles in the direction you want to go, which
comes naturally if you look at the corner you are
about to take. As we practiced around a circular
circuit, a few laps later and it was time to begin
our forest adventure. At 6mph, we followed
narrow, bumpy trails, which were a little more
challenging, but great fun especially round the
twisty corners!
SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #71
There is usually always one, and that was me!
Showing off for a video, let’s just say I lost my
balance, almost fell off - apparently did an
impressive one hand, one leg manoeuvre, but, I
rescued myself and managed to get out in one
piece – those martial art lessons have obviously
helped my balance! You can view on Facebook!
We then explored the forest as a group but
increased to the speed of 12mph. After a ride out
into the forest, we arrived back at training camp,
concluding our Segway experience.
After a quick picnic stop, we then went straight
onto the Treetop Adventure. We were safely
fitted with our harnesses and before climbing
up into the trees we had a practice run around a
short course, which was approximately 2 feet off
the ground. I rather liked the practice bit, there
were two of us in the group who are not so keen
on heights. I find I prefer to wobble about in the
air with the certain knowledge that if I fall off
the rope, I won’t fall to far. Putting me to shame,
there were people flying across the ropes in the
sky. The first cable crossing didn’t look all that
intimidating until I had climbed up to it, then
something primitive kicked in my brain, making
me feel quite uneasy, but I overcame it and
soldiered on
On a couple of occasions there are ‘easy’ and
‘advanced’ options. My favourite part was the
Tarzan Swing - a dangling rope that sees you
freefall for an adrenaline-pumping moment,
before being caught by a cargo net. You’ll feel
like you’ve had the most fun workout of your life
- and that’s without mentioning how proud you’ll
feel afterwards!
We had a totally unforgettable Go Ape
experience! At the end of the course, after racing
your partner down a double zip line, we were
each presented with a certificate to prove our
bravery. There is also a Go Ape Junior Treetop
challenge for adventurous children and big kids.
Cover yourself IN JOY, BY DIOR...
Dior has been pulling all the stops out recently!
They’ve been revamping lots of their classic
scents but also bringing new essentials out!
This is no exception for “Joy” the brand
new fragrance by Dior.
Launched at the end of August, it is an ode
to pleasures and to life.
It is conceived as a scent of
energy, liveliness and softness,
of happiness and good
mood.
This highly anticipated and
sort after fragrance is not
only new, it is the first stand
along fragrance of perfume
launched by Dior in 20 years.
It is a fragrance illuminated by the vibrant
smell of flowers and citrus fruits, the
smooth caress of woods and the serenity
of musks; a fragrance with a thousand
nuances and facets, yet crystal-clear.
Zested Bergamot and Mandarin explode
in unison with flowers. Grasse Rose, in
both Essence and Absolute form, as
well as heady Jasmine, blend with these
delectable fruits in a vibrant smile.
Warm clear and creamy sandalwood
embraces us in softness.
An intimate signature, the clear
powdery whisper of musks creates
a tender and sensual sin-on-sin
effect.
With the feminine, but classic
bottle, in a soft pink, both
luminous and precious, you’ll not
only love the smell but you’ll want to
display this in your room.
The Diamond Experience...
Medical Microdermabrasion with
Diamonds at SK...
We do put our skin through a lot, and at this
time of year, it can show. It continuously fights
the sun’s harmful rays, pollution and toxins we
ingest, and at some point, these stresses and
strains can be visible through our complexions.
Skin can appear dull, dehydrated, uneven in
texture and pigmented.
One treatment which is excellent at reviving
skin and gently removing the damaged outer
layer, is the Medical Microdermabrasion with
Diamonds treatment, now available at SK.
So, what is the difference
between the Diamond treatment
and the Crystal treatment we
had before? Well… Traditional
microdermabrasion methods
use very small crystals to buff
away the outer layer of skin. This
was effective, however it had its
drawbacks such as the crystals
could be highly abrasive and
create inflammation and heat on the skin,
plus, clients needed some downtown after the
treatment, which isn’t ideal for busy lifestyles.
Diamond Microdermabrasion is much gentler
to the skin, it polishes rather than blasting, and
is highly-effective at removing the dead skin
cells. The treatment can also be customised
to suit the clients skin type and needs, as the
coarseness of the diamonds can be adjusted.
As the treatment is performed, no heat or
inflammation is created with the instruments,
this means the clients only have temporary
minor redness shortly after their treatment,
which dissipates quickly. Ensuring you can
continue with your day, without looked
permanently ‘flushed’!
Why would I want the treatment? Medical
Microdermabrasion with Diamonds helps to
improve general skin health for a brighter
more rejuvenated appearance. Secondly, it can
target specific skin conditions such as Acne
Scarring, Sun Damage, Age Spots,
Fine Lines, Blackheads, Oily Skin
and Hyperpigmentation. It also is a
relatively quick treatment, lasting
from 25 to 45 minutes, perfect to fit
into your lunchtime hour. Although
you may appear slightly flushed and
red initially after your appointment,
these effects should disappear within
half an hour, just make sure to wear
an SPF for several days to protect your skin.
To see visible, longer-lasting significant
changes, you will require a course of
treatments spaced a couple of weeks apart.
To take advantage of the offer we have
with Bounce Magazine, see our advert
opposite…
Why Should I Be Oil Pulling?
There is often a preconception that if it’s a natural
technique it won’t be as good as the latest
chemical option however many holistic treatments
have stood the test of time and continue to be
passed down from generation to generation. Oil
pulling is one that I can certainly see staying for
many years to come.
What is Oil Pulling?
It is a traditional Indian Ayurvedic technique
that draws toxins from the mouth and the body
through the gums, teeth and pores in the mouth.
Trapping bacteria that can then be expelled when
the oil is removed.
It is estimated that this holistic technique has been
used for between 3000-5000 years! To me that
shows that this is not a fad and there is a science
behind the technique that has withstood the test
of time.
Which oil should I use?
My personal choice is Coconut oil as it is known
to be particularly effective due to its natural
antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. I
personally feel more comfortable with the delicate
taste and light texture.
However you could also use sesame or sunflower
oil. You may also like to consider an oil pulling
mouthwash as it already comes in liquid form and
may fit in to your general routine with ease. I use
the Georganics oil pulling mouthwash in english
peppermint - lovely and refreshing in the morning.
98

HAIR & BEAUTY
SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #71
How can it help me?
It is believed that Coconut oil pulling can reduce harmful
bacteria in your mouth. Many people believe that oil pulling
can remove plaque and prevent, or even cure cavities.
I personally have had many issues with my teeth since I
was very young, overcrowding, teeth removal, braces, low
enamel etc. I always care for my teeth very well however I
came to the conclusion that maybe mainstream oral care
wasn’t for me.
Having developed a fear of the dentist, a solution that
could potentially prevent cavities was a must for me!
I have to say that after oil pulling for just a few days the
very small amount of plaque I had has just about gone!
Benefits of oil pulling...
• It has been known to help reduce
infections such as abscesses
• Reduce harmful bacteria
• Reduce the appearance of plaque
on teeth
• Whiten teeth
• Potentially reduce / repair cavities
• Strengthen teeth
• Fresher breath
• Reduced tooth and gum sensitivity
all around your mouth.
You can even gargle with it if you wish.
Careful not to swallow the oil though and
ensure you spit it out at the end.
The liquid should now appear bubbly and
fine in consistency. You may notice debris in
the liquid too where it has cleaned particles
from between your teeth too.
It’s recommended to use oil pulling in the
morning, followed by brushing your teeth
thoroughly afterwards. It’s not advised after
eating.
I find it fits in with my routine to start oil
pulling before I get in the shower every
morning - I then don’t find myself watching
the clock and it always feels great to multitask.
Written by Sarah Gare.
Some people do believe that oil pulling can have many
positive effects on the body too and each individual may
experience different results.
Tips & techniques...
To oil pull simply take around a tablespoon or cap full of
coconut oil or an oil pulling mouthwash and swill the liquid
around your mouth for around 10-20 minutes.
Be sure to allow the liquid to pass through your teeth and
September
LATE SUMMER PROGRESSES
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Plan ahead - Buy springflowering
bedding plants and buy or order
spring-flowering bulbs.
September is generally a cooler,
gustier month than August and the
days are noticeably shorter.
While there’s not as much to do in the ornamental
garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or
vegetable patch, you’ll be busy reaping the rewards
of harvest.
Propagation
Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as
Pelargonium and Osteospermum.
These plants often do better grown from new
cuttings each year. If you do not have a greenhouse,
then use a light windowsill to grow them on.
It’s also time to get out and start planting springflowering
bulbs for next year and you can collect
seeds for next summer’s colour too. Make the most
of the remaining warmth while you can!
Continue collecting and storing seed from perennials
still forming seed heads. Bring inside any tender
perennials, such as Fuchsia, Gazania, Lantana and
Abutilon, before frosts cause damage.
110

HOME & GARDEN
SEPTEMBER 2018 | ISSUE #71
Top jobs this month:
1. Divide herbaceous perennials
2. Pick autumn raspberries
6. Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain
or grey water if possible
7. Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant
watering
3. Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy
annuals
8. Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that
they are ready for use in the autumn
4. Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage
spoils them
9. Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof
netting
5. Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway
10. Plant spring flowering bulbs
SUFFOLK PUNCH
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Suffolk Punch Boxing Club at
Martlesham, Ipswich has been
running since 2013 and is lead by
highly qualified Coaches Rob Hodgins
(who has been coaching for 28 years)
and Sara Thomas.
The club is open to all abilities from complete
novices (that’ll be me), to highly advanced and
professional level fighters, the club has two of
its own professional boxers along with many
regional champions.
(Cue the Rocky theme), so in true Action Man
fashion I jumped straight in, donned the gloves
and entered the ring ready to join one of
Suffolk Punch’s beginner classes.
First off, was a rather intense warm up that really
got the heart racing and the sweat flowing,
followed by a run through the basics for the
extreme novices like myself.
We worked on our footwork and pacing, which
goes hand in hand with the striking, but before
that we had to learn to defend. You won’t last two
seconds in the ring without moving and blocking
right? So, we worked on some movement drills
and it wasn’t too long before I was floating like a
butterfly... now to sting like a bee.
Working in pairs with some pads, and the
watchful eye of coach Sara, we were taught the
jab, cross and hook. We were also shown how
the additional, bout winning power is delivered
through the legs and the hips. Just like any sport
brut strength will always lose out to technique,
but you can easily pick up those techniques
thanks to the excellent coaching and welcoming
environment at Suffolk Punch Boxing Club.
SPORT
We finished our session with three rounds
on their aqua bags, (a water filled punch bag
designed to mimic the feeling of punching flesh,
no Rocky-esk freezer full of meat was available),
where we were able to put our
new fancy footwork and striking
skills to use, whilst learning about
the endurance required.
We covered lots of ground in our
hour long session and I’m sure
I’ll be back soon, I might even
consider competing in one of
Suffolk Punch’s regular charity
boxing events. A twelve week training program
will culminate in a three round bout, at a packed
out Trinity Park, against an equally matched
opponent for which you can attract sponsorship
and raise funds for charity.
Trials for the next round of charity boxers are on
September 5 th with the event on November 24 th .
Archie’s
Adventures
PERKS OF BEING A COUNTRY DOG...
Everyone says we are lucky to live in
East Anglia…
I have heard the expression ‘Suffolk skies’
used many times and listened to people share
experiences about their time on the Norfolk
broads. But, what are the perks for us furry
friends? Well, I will tell you, here are a few of my
favourite things to do in Norfolk and Suffolk.
My top things to do:
Visiting the beach…
Dogs are allowed on most of the Coast’s
beaches in Norfolk and Suffolk, however on
many of the most popular stretches, there are
restrictions over the summer months so best
to look out for signs that give exact dates for a
particular beach. A favourite beach of mine is
Dunwich, which is dog friendly all year round.
your 4-legged companion. Just up the coast near
Woodbridge is National Trust Sutton Hoo where
you can discover the story of the Anglo-Saxons
at the burial ground of kings. Slightly inland
and you will find Framlingham Castle. Steeped
in nearly 1000 years of history, there’s loads to
explore and dogs on leads are allowed in the
grounds, oh, and Ed Sheeran loves it there too!
Walks…
From golden country fields to riverside
footpaths, you are sure to find a walk or two
ahead, perhaps with the odd dog friendly
country pub to stop at along the way. This is by
far my favourite thing to do! Have fun exploring!
Follow me on Insta @official_archies_
adventures. You can also keep up to date with
my antics on Twitter @bouncearchie.
Boating on the broads…
We are allowed too! Get afloat with your best
friend; and enjoy a trip along the River Waveney
or Norfolk Broads taking in the beautiful
waterside scenery and looking out for some of
the region’s rare wildlife.
Take in the history…
You can explore the history and architecture of
Landguard Fort in Felixstowe in the company of
