ABOUT THE COVER ARTIST: Wes Sewell
Wes Sewell has been taking photographs in South Georgia since his college days at
voted Best Photographer 2008-2010 and 2013-2014. His work has been featured by
aerial shots. Wes has been married to his wife, Donna, for more than 20 years.
Valdosta Newcomer’s State University Guide 5
Southern Charm, Forward Thinking
Create a World of Opportunities
Valdosta State University offers the best of both
worlds — the extensive academic, cultural, and
social opportunities of a major university and the
small classes and close, personal attention found
at smaller institutions. Students are attracted to
the close-knit community where learning occurs
in a supportive environment and faculty members
challenge each student’s potential.
VSU has a legacy as a major provider of
educational services for South Georgia. As a
comprehensive university, it focuses on the longterm,
total educational experience, providing a
variety of catalysts for student growth in all areas
of life. Study abroad and exchange opportunities
at institutions around the world give students
exceptional opportunities for learning. Closer to
campus, VSU offers internships and experiential
learning opportunities to expand students’
horizons.
Welcome to Valdosta
Nestled in the heart of the Deep South, Valdosta and its surrounding
area blends a rich southern heritage with charm, hospitality and
character. Don’t let Valdosta’s grace and beauty fool you. Exciting
entertainment awaits just around the corner! Named by National
Geographic as Georgia’s “Best Adventure Town,” Valdosta is ripe with
opportunities for fun and relaxation.
Conveniently located midway between Atlanta and Orlando on 1-75,
Valdosta’s moderate climate is just right for year-round activities. From
the South’s foremost theme park, Wild Adventures, to unique shopping,
historic venues, mouthwatering southern cuisine and antiquing
opportunities, the area offers amazing experiences.
Discover the natural beauty of the Okeefenokee Swamp or Grand Bay
Wildlife Management Area. Other outdoor activities include golf,
fishing, boating, hunting, sports and more. Valdosta also boasts a
diverse cultural arts offering, and downtown features the historic
Fairview District, complete with shops, eateries and landmarks.
With more than 54,000 residents, Valdosta ranks as the 11th largest city
in Georgia and serves as the seat of Lowndes County. Valdosta is known
by many nicknames, including “The Azalea City” and “Winnersville,”
but was recently voted by ESPN as “Titletown USA,” recognizing the
area’s excellence in sports. Valdosta is also recognized as the business,
cultural, educational, medical, leisure and retail hub of South Georgia
and North Florida.
The city of Valdosta is named after a scenic estate owned by Governor
George Troup in Laurens County, Georgia. Governor Troup signed the
act that created Lowndes County in 1825. The unique, Americanized
name is thought to be derived from a district in the Alpine Mountains
of Italy called Valle d’Aosta.
Valdosta definitely lives up to its name with its abundance of flowering
azaleas and gardens during the spring and summer seasons. Fortunately
for the community, R.J. Drexel, a generous, nature-loving person, came
to Valdosta as its parks superintendent many years ago. He began
planting azaleas along the city streets, the cemetery, church grounds and
around the government building of Valdosta. In the spring of each year,
Drexel would give five azalea plants to each citizen for planting. Drexel
inspired the ladies of the Garden Club to use azalea liners as a waysand-means
project. Drexel Park is named in his honor and fittingly, is
home to the city’s annual Azalea Festival each spring.
Fairview Historic District
Concentrated in the area of River Street, Varnedoe Street, Wells Street
and Central Place, downtown, the village of Fairview, predates the
incorporation of the City of Valdosta. The area underwent three periods
of development: 1840 to 1860, the late 1890s Victorian surge, and the
1910 to 1920s period of Prairie and Craftsman influence. The Fairview
Neighborhood Association was instrumental in forming the Valdosta
Heritage Foundation in 1981. The area was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places in May 1984.
Historic Downtown
Downtown is bustling with renewed spirit! With public and private
investments over the past several years reaching more than $12 million,
the physical appearances of the buildings and pedestrian areas are prime
examples of these improvements.
The downtown is a great place to shop, dine, and work, as well as a
newfound area to live. Downtown Valdosta is situated around the
Lowndes County Courthouse, a grand Neoclassical structure built in
1905. It stands tall among the charming buildings, which are now hip
retail stores, professional offices and privately owned eateries. Some of
the area’s oldest churches can also be found downtown.
Special events throughout the year appeal to a wide variety of visitors.
For example, the Brown Bag Lunch Concert Series in May is a weeklong
series of concerts that showcase our local and regional musical
talent. For more information on Downtown Valdosta, contact the Main
Street Office at (229) 259-3577.
Downtown, East End, Fairview, North Patterson St., and Southside. An
historic driving tour map brochure is available through the Valdosta-
more detailed information on many of the structures mentioned.
Historic Tour Highlights
Converse-Dalton-Ferrell House
305 N. Patterson St.
(229) 244-8575
Restored to its 1902 glory, this pristine Neoclassical residence serves as
the Valdosta Junior Service League’s headquarters. Available for private
and community functions.
The Dosta Playhouse
122 N. Ashley St.
(229) 247-8243
The Dosta Theatre was built where two stores were lost to fire and
opened the spring of 1941. The Art Moderne-style building is a
reflective of the sobering Depression, stripped of most ornamentations
with an obsession with streamlining and speed. Glass blocks, portholes
and curved corners celebrate cruise liners and the automobile age.
Presently, it is the home of Theatre Guild-Valdosta.

Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum
Located in the old Carnegie Public Library building, the Lowndes
County Historical Society and Museum is a treasure trove of
information outlining the history of Valdosta and Lowndes County.
The Historical Society collects and maintains research materials and
displays, including a large library collection of various government
records and newspaper clippings. Displays include many fascination
items such as uniforms and weapons from various wars and large file
regarding the legendary Doc Holliday, who lived and practiced dentistry
here.
Winning Tradition
For more than 30 years, the Valdosta area was known as “Winnersville,”
which could explain why in 2008, the city gained a national recognition
for being crowned “Title Town USA” by ESPN.
Without a single pro-sports title to claim, Valdosta beat out giants such
as New York, Boston and Los Angeles, by excelling in a variety of sports
at the high school and college level. Valdosta High School is still known
as the “winningest football team in the country” with more than 800
wins and many regional, state and national titles to their name. Crosstown
rival Lowndes High School has won five state titles since 1980,
with three of them coming in the last six years. And it’s not just
football—both schools have garnered state and national championships
in many other sports as well.
At the college level, Valdosta State University is known as a perennial
powerhouse in Division II football, having won three national
championships in this decade. VSU also holds national championships
in baseball, tennis and golf. But what impressed ESPN the most was
Valdosta’s strong sense of community spirit and commitment to
excellence—qualities that led to being name “Title Town USA.”
Nearby Towns
Hahira
Eleven miles north of Valdosta, Hahira is the gateway to Lowndes
County from the north. Citizens enjoy a small-town atmosphere with
the advantages of a larger city nearby. Hahira host several annual events,
Thanksgiving.
The Honey Bee Festival—the first week in October—starts off with a
breakfast on the first Monday and is followed by beauty pageants, arts
and crafts shows, gospel singing, a 5K run, live bee demonstrations and
a finale parade on Saturday. For more information, call the City of
Hahira office at (229) 794-2330.
Remerton
Within the city limits of Valdosta, just off Baytree Road, lies the town
of Remerton. Named for Remer Young Lane, the president of Valdosta’s
first bank, Remerton was established in 1899 to meet the needs of the
Strickland Cotton Mill workers and was later incorporated as a textile
mill town. Now surrounded by the City of Valdosta, Remerton has its
own government and law enforcement. Historic Remerton Mill Village
is composed of restored mill houses converted into a unique businesses
offering quaint shopping, including consignment, crafts, home
furnishings and boutiques. For more information, call Remerton City
Hall at (229) 259-0416
fragrance of magnolia blossoms, and be charmed by the warmth of the
people. Located on I-75 Exit 5, Lake Park is the gateway to natural
beauty, rich history, and year-round shopping and recreation. For more
Moody Air Force Base
9
Moody Air Force Base, located
10 miles northeast of Valdosta,
was founded as a result of
concerned Valdosta and
Lowndes County citizens
seeking to assist the expanding
defense program in the early
stages of World War II.
Research suggested developing
an air corps training base, and
in 1941 the War Department
was granted exclusive use of
more than 9,000 acres of land
by the Agricultural
Department. The base is named
in memory of Maj. George
Putnam Moody, an Air Force
pioneer who was on the
inspection board for the AT-10
transitional trainers that were
eventually sent to the base.
Home to the 23d Wing, the
mission of the more than 5,500
military personnel is to
organize, train and employ
combat-ready A-10C, HH-60G
and HC-130 aircraft,
pararescuemen, and support
forces to execute worldwide
close air support, force
protection and combat search
and rescue operations, national
security and the global war on
terrorism. The base is also
home to the Air Force's 93d Air
Ground Operations Wing.
The men and women of
Moody have historically
enjoyed respect and support
from area citizens, perhaps
evidenced most strongly by the
intense lobbying to save the
base when it appeared on a
closure list. Not only was the
base spared, but the base gained
approximately 600 positions.
Moody also employs nearly 700
civilians.
Personnel at Moody return the
hospitality to the metropolitan
Valdosta area. One of the
community favorites is the
“Scare Force” Haunted House
during Halloween. Area high
school and college students
interested in a military career
are also welcomed to “shadow”
a Moody member in a
particular career field for a day.
Additionally, nearby Grassy
Pond is now open to the public!
Enjoy access to approximately
500 acres used for recreational
activities such as boating,
picnicking, camping, fishing
Hunting Regulations
11
2018 Licensing Requirements and Fees
Georgia resident hunters age 16 and older are required to have a
hunting license, except when hunting on land owned by them or
their immediate family, blood or dependent relationship, residing
in the same household. All non-resident hunters, 16 and older,
are also required to have a hunting license. Other licenses may be
required depending on the type of game hunted.
You can obtain a Georgia hunting license in Georgia in
one of three ways:
1. License Agent – find an Agent in your county (dealers
throughout the state, at many sporting goods stores,
marinas, bait and tackle stores, hardware stores, etc.).
Most license dealers also sell non-resident licenses.
2. On the Internet at
www.gohuntinggeorgia.com
3. Call (800) 366-2661 (M-F from 8am – 8pm and S-S from
9am – 5pm)
All licenses may be purchased in person at any Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) office statewide.
A basic hunting license is required for all hunting. If you
are interested in pursuing deer, wild turkey or bear, a Big Game
license is also required. If you are hunting ducks and other
waterfowl, a Georgia waterfowl license is needed in addition
to the basic hunting license. Several licenses cover multiple
requirements. For example, the Sportsman’s License covers all
hunting and fishing license requirements in the state, except for
the Federal Duck Stamp. To make sure you’re covered with the
proper licenses, please contact the Georgia Wildlife Resources
Division at (770) 918-6400.
To obtain a complete description of seasons, species, regulations,
and contact information, visit www.gohuntgeorgia.com. A
booklet is available for download.
Hunters Must Have Deer Harvest Record
All licenses (hunting, big game, fishing, etc.) are now annual. This
means they are good for one year from the date of purchase. Deer harvest
records are seasonal. They are only good for the hunting season during
which they were acquired.
Hunters who purchased a big game license during a previous deer season,
as well as deer hunters under 16 years of age, landowners, honorary,
lifetime and sportsman license holders, will need to obtain a current deer
harvest record for the current season, even if they are not required to
purchase a big game license or their big game license has not expired.
Hunters must complete a deer harvest record before moving a deer
from the site of a kill, except when participating in a Wildlife
Management Area or National Wildlife Refuge hunt that requires hunters
to check out their harvested deer. Hunters may not possess or use
multiple big game licenses or deer harvest records and should keep harvest
records with their hunting licenses.
You can get a current deer harvest record by going online into your
DNR Customer Account.
Recreational License Changes
Hunters can now take advantage of a new and improved licensing system,
which provides options to purchase a license online, by phone and
at select vendors. A service charge is associated with this new system. For
more information, visit gohuntgeorgia.com.
New Online Quota Hunt System: In order to better serve our customers,
all quota hunt applications must be submitted through the new
online system. This includes all previously paper-based quota hunts
(including Adult/Child, Dove, Feral Hog, Dog-Deer, and Quail quota
hunts). Wheelchair hunts are not included in the online system. See
Quota Hunt Information.
License Revocation Policy
Beginning September 1, 2008, individuals who egregiously or habitually
violate Georgia’s game and fish laws and regulations are subject to
have their hunting and fishing privileges revoked or suspended
Additionally, the ability to obtain a license may be suspended for up
to two years and may also affect the privilege to hunt or fish in Wildlife
Violator Compact member states.
