A collection of works that will arouse the
conscious, still the mind, and soothe the soul…
As a collective of artists we have joined forces to create a
cohesive body of work—a fundamental agreement that has
become a whole. This exhibit symbolizes our escape, conveys
our passion and recaptures the rapture of memories past.
We want the silence of the works to prompt reflection and
random reverie
Joan Butterfield/Curator
The Association of African Canadian Artists (aaca) is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to the support, development, and sharing of works
of art produced by artists of African Canadian heritage. The main goal of
the aaca is to introduce this art into the mainstream Canadian market.
COLOURblind is the aaca’s annual, juried, themed exhibition that
launches each year in conjunction with Scotiabank’s Caribana Festival, the
largest cultural festival of its kind in North America.
Scotiabank Caribana, now in its 43rd year,
is a defining feature of our multicultural
and multiracial city. Although Caribana is
most widely known for the Parade on Lakeshore
Ave, with its colourful mas costumes
and pulsating rhythms and melodies, there
is so much more that the festival offers its
revellers in their pursuit to enjoy “Things
Caribbean.”
Scotiabank Caribana seeks to provide our
audience a holistic cultural experience, an
expression of our multicultural city, that
showcases the extensive talents and creativity
of our established and unsung Caribbean
artistes. We seek to offer a wide array of sights, sounds and tastes
that gives our audience a lasting sense of the rich tapestry of Caribbean
arts and culture.
A unique and profoundly touching cultural experience is the Scotiabank
Caribana’s Visual Art Exhibition, “From The Soul”. The Art Exhibition
is in its fourth year and is a visual art presentation of over 150 works
from African-Canadian artistes, which will arouse the conscious, still the
mind and soothe the soul.
The exhibit is on display from July 15th to August 15th, 2010 at the
Royal Ontario Museum, one of our continuing institutional sponsors. The
Royal Ontario Museum, Canada’s largest and the fifth largest museum in
North America is world renowned for world culture and natural history.
The quality and the depth of the art exhibition and the majesty of the
venue make this exhibit a “must-see” event in the extensive calendar of
Scotiabank Caribana events.
I want to thank Scotiabank for its continued and valued partnership,
participation and contribution to the overall festivities. African Canadian
art seldom gets the attention and accolades it deserves. The exposure
that this visual art exhibition provides to these talented artists would
not be possible without Scotiabank’s committed support.
Thanks to our viewing audience for taking the time to attend the exhibit.
I am sure you will be touched and excited by the unsung brilliance
of the art on display.
i ii
Enjoy!
Festival Management Committee
Scotiabank Caribana 2010

At Scotiabank, we believe that arts
and culture have tremendous power
to enrich the lives of individuals and
communities. We are proud to support
arts and cultural groups and events, and
encourage the development of new talent
in the diverse communities we serve
around the world. This includes 27
countries in the Caribbean and Central
America, where we have operated
since 1889.
That’s why we are so pleased to
extend our support to the Scotiabank
Caribana Festival, and the annual Caribana
Art Exhibit. The rich experience of Canada’s Caribbean community
is beautifully reflected in “From the Soul,” this year’s exhibit at
the Royal Ontario Museum. Curated by renowned African-Canadian
artist and activist Joan Butterfield, the exhibit features more than 150
works of art in various media, comprising the largest single juried
display of works of art by African-Canadian artists.
As Canada’s most international bank, and the leading bank in
the Caribbean, we take great pride in helping the Caribana Festival
celebrate the amazing diversity of this great city. We hope you have a
wonderful time, and enjoy the Caribana Art Exhibit!
My heartfelt thanks to all of the artists,
I personally celebrate and salute your
abilities, you are indeed the best!
To Joe Halstead, Eddison Doyle and my
The Royal Ontario Museum (rom) is
delighted to once again participate in
the Scotiabank Caribana Festival, one
of Toronto’s largest and most vibrant
cultural celebrations. Marking the fourth
its visitors, through its diverse galleries,
Africa, the American continents, the Asia-Pacific region and Oceania.
From the Soul: Caribana Art Exhibit will be a lovely and visually rich
addition to our summer offerings. It will allow festival attendees,
Torontonians and visitors to the city the opportunity to experience a
unique and powerful exhibition of over 150 works celebrating African
