The heritage of Northwest Coast tribes in Ketchikan is integral to our culture. Twenty percent of residents can trace their heritage to the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribes. The largest collection of totem poles in the world can be found here, and you’ll meet the artists and teachers who work to keep their culture alive. • Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight State Park display poles, clan houses and feature scheduled performances of traditional Native dances. • The Totem Heritage Center is a federal historic site housing ancient poles retrieved from abandoned villages. The center has instructed students in traditional Native design and arts techniques since established in the 1970s. • View artisans at work at Saxman’s carving center. The SE Discovery Center features a replica of a summer fish camp. See ancient tools and implements at the Tongass Historical Museum.
