44 Prince of Wales West of Ketchikan lies the third largest island in the United States. Prince of Wales is home to 3,700 residents in a dozen communities ranging in size from 50 to 1500. Prince of Wales provides outstanding recreation opportunities including camping, hunting and hiking. It is also a prime destination for sportfishing enthusiasts. • El Capitan and Cavern Lake caves are managed by the U.S. Forest Service, and are examples of the massive cave and karst system present in SE Alaska. • Examples of Native Alaskan culture and totem pole collections can be viewed in several Prince of Wales communities. • Daily transportation between Ketchikan and Prince of Wales is provided by the Inter Island ferry service, operating between Hollis and Ketchikan. In 2006, the IFA plans to begin service between Coffman Cove and the Wrangell- Petersburg area. • Local commuter air carriers connect Ketchikan to the island with scheduled daily service.
