Prince of Wales<br />
West of <strong>Ketchikan</strong> lies the third<br />
largest island in the United<br />
States. Prince of Wales is home to<br />
3,700 residents in a dozen communities<br />
ranging in size from 50<br />
to 1500. Prince of Wales provides<br />
outstanding recreation opportunities<br />
including camping, hunting<br />
and hiking. It is also a prime<br />
destination for sportfishing<br />
enthusiasts.<br />
• El Capitan and Cavern Lake caves<br />
are managed by the U.S. Forest<br />
Service, and are examples of the<br />
massive cave and karst system<br />
present in SE Alaska.<br />
• Examples of Native Alaskan culture<br />
and totem pole collections can be<br />
viewed in several Prince of Wales<br />
communities.<br />
• Daily transportation between<br />
<strong>Ketchikan</strong> and Prince of Wales is<br />
provided by the Inter Island ferry<br />
service, operating between Hollis<br />
and <strong>Ketchikan</strong>. In 2006, the IFA<br />
plans to begin service between<br />
Coffman Cove and the Wrangell-<br />
Petersburg area.<br />
• Local commuter air carriers connect<br />
<strong>Ketchikan</strong> to the island with scheduled<br />
daily service.<br />
