Idioms
An idiom is a phrase whose meaning is not related to its individual words:
For example: To ‘face the music’ is to confront and take responsibility for
one’s actions
‘sitting pretty’ is to be in a fortunate situation
‘plain sailing’ is progressing without problems.
Kevin and Luis were up to their ears in paper. They were at the tail end of a school project which had to be
delivered the next morning. As usual, they had been slow beginning the assignment and now they were
dead on their feet trying to complete it on time. Like an angel of mercy, Kevin’s mum came in with supper
just as they were filing the last sheets of paper.
Each boy knew he would sleep the sleep of the dead after such a mammoth effort.
