How long have you been a tattoo artist?
I have been a tattoo artist for 10 years.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
The first tattoo I did was when I was 14. I was amongst
a crowd who were tattooing and was called up to have
a go at colouring in some tribal... I was told I would
be a natural because of my love for drawing... so up I
stepped
How would you describe your tattooing style?
I would describe my tattoo style as solid...
What is the secret to achieving such detail in your tattoos?
I was once told to pay attention to detail. So this
would be the secret to such detail in a tattoo
@traceypantera
Please introduce yourself and
tell the readers where you are
from.
Tracey Pantera, Texas born and
raised. I’m very passionate about
body modification and fitness. I
Love hanging out with my family,
my bullies, modeling, as well
as attending Tattoo Conventions.
Photos by Tanner Garcia and Alyssa Waddups
Which of your tattoos has the
most meaning to you?
My backpiece / Peacock. I’ve
always been in love with this
beautiful animal and his representation.
He offers lessons
about self-love, honor, integrity
and the importance of facing
life’s challenges as well as the
unknown with courage and
confidence.
Do you remember what your
first tattoo was?
Yes, as well as the learning lesson
that came with it. It was my
name "Tracey" and was very
poorly done. I'm glad to say it’s
been covered up.
Do you know how many tattoos
you have?
Lol, I lost count a while back. My
goal is a bodysuit and I'm more
than half way there.
Which tattoo hurt the most?
For now I'd have to say my armpits,
but this answer may change
after I get my throat and head
tattooed.
What is your favorite tattoo?
My backpiece / Peacock.
What inspired you to turn your
body into a canvas of beautiful
art?
Well, I've always been a fan of
body modification. I feel it has
been the perfect way for me to
express myself artistically. In
my opinion being able to share
my experiences both bad and
good through art work has
been extremely therapeutic and
cathartic.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
Jeff Gogue
The gym seems to be something
that you are really into. Do you
workout for competitions or just a
healthy way of life?
Both for a healthy lifestyle and
I also compete in tattoo conventions
and tattoo model competitions.
Being so beautifully tatted, do you
attend any tattoo conventions?
Yes! I actually started out at
Tattoo conventions then started
modeling and love both.
How important is social media to
you as a model?
Very, it's an excellent way to
network with photographers,
magazines, models and fans.
Do you have any advice for aspiring
alternative / tattoo models?
You will never please everyone.
There will always be criticism
use it as motivation and stay
true to yourself.
M.C. WOODY
@parrotgang
M.C. Woody, you have been featured in The WAVE
Ink back in Dec ’17, so would you please reintroduce
yourself to our readers and let them know where
you’re from?
Hey, my name is Woody, I'm a rapper, drum n bass
MC and recording studio owner from Gisborne,
Aotearoa (New Zealand), a small island in the South
Pacific that consists of a mixture of Maori (indigenous)
and Pakeha (Euro Settlers)
Musically how would you describe your style?
On the drum n bass front I've been performing with
Drum n Bass duo State Of Mind since I was a baby
in 2009 it's Neurofunk a sub Genre of Drum N Bass,
they are signed out of Blackout in Europe. They've
had a world no 1 alb and continue to tour the world
asmashomg massive festivals globally. I'm very
proud of them Pat and Stu.
On the Hip Hop side I guess it's dark af. Like I write
about my life, the shit I grew up with, the shit that
I've seen and my country. I guess Aotearoa is kind of
marketed as this beautiful place full of happy people
and dont get me wrong, it is we are a very powerful
and beautiful people. But. we have some of the worst
violence, rape, crime, domestic abuse stats and the
highest rate of suicide in the known world. 5x that
of the States (US). We don't have guns so we're doing
it the hard way too, the bloody fucked up way you
see in movies. That's New Zealand suicide, bruh. We
kill ourselves more then anybody else.
People have always told me I write about ugly.
...Yeah I write about ugly!!! And I write about pain
because that's where I find the most beauty but I'm
fucked up man.
You’re touring right now, how’s that going?
It's been fantastic we've pretty much sold out most
shows we've done this year on the State Of Mind
(Land Of The Blind) album tour. And since I haven't
completely finished this crazy hip hop show.
Where are you touring and how long is it for?
With “State Of Mind”, it's all year around as part
one of a three part album is out so, it won't stop
for a while and we're still selling out shows and
there's still two parts the boys are set to release so
that should keep us busy. We have the summer and
NYE festival circuit here to finish off the year with
so, it's all fun ATM. As far as the hip hop thing it's
still not finished, but it's got a tour waiting to go
once I fucking finish it, (the live show) but I did do
a one off show in my homown a few months back to
feed kids that could not afford lunches at school in
my hood, so that was pretty dope. I wrote a single
called “Clustered” for my girl, Chalese, like the
week before, so I got to played that live to her, and
an audience at the war memorial theatre. So that's a
highlight to be able to give back... She's a real one.
Who are some of the artist that you like right now?
I'm absolutely in love with the Manchester UK boom
bap. ATM, mainly High Focus records. Ocean Wisdom,
Four Owls and shit like that. It makes me want
to make something with those elements in it. Like, I
think the UK has a great hip hop formula, ATM with
Skepta and stuff bridging into US. I kinda want to
use some of that sound in the near future, eh. And
all of Kanye's new work has me hype.
What is the difference, if there is any that you see
between hip-hop in other places around the world and
the US?
Well I think that music as a whole is two parts, one
is the culture of the area you are from, combined
with the shit you're influenced by, so if you mix
those two with a personality, boom you have urban
music. So, nah not really. It's all subjective. They just
tell it their way, just the trends and accents go into it,
so really it's all just music
You have released a project, ”Don’t Cry for Me”, not long ago, how is that doing and what has been the response to it?
To be honest way better then I expected a dark horror core EP about my messed up life would. I guess after ten years of
being the party guy people that heard it we're like “Jesus this dude is not what I thought he was and this isn't electronic
music it's hip hop wtf ”. So they are wanting more of it suprisingly. Like MC Tali who is a great friend and international
musician came up to me when we were afterpartying at the end of summer in this mansion and she hit me
with, “you never play the victim. You act like you never had any of this shit go down and I never knew half of this shit
Woody, and I've known you for years. Do I even know you or do you even let anybody know you, really?”. She's an
angel in the industry tbh, and it made me realise I owe it to people to show more of that side of my life. Like if not in
person I'll make a song about it now, like how am I going to inspire a suicidal kid that wants to rap in a small town, in
small country in the middle of fucking nowhere. If he or she doesn't know that I was just like them, ya know? I'm no
saint, yo. No Fucking way. But I'm trying.
What is your favorite song on it?
I don't have one, “Don't Cry For Me”, was the truth about everything I hated in myself or about my childhood. So
there's no favorite as it's all about my fucking pain, my fathers death, my Bros getting taken away, violence, addiction,
sex, drugs, being played by the wrong bitches, and my attempted suicide. And I'm still working on the part two and
it doesn't seem to get much lighter I'm afraid. But, if you are making me pick one, it would be F.M.L, as it's me and
Patrick from State Of Mind, we've been best friends for a long time, toured together as State Of Mind and Woody for
over a decade. So for us to finally make a hip hop tune and for it to be cool and co-signed by The WuTang was pretty
special I guess. Like I'm getting a gold record sent to my house because of that tune hitting like 1.5 million downloads
on DKings. And they sent me some new Grillz.
OK, my friend, tell us about Wu-Tang, the affiliation you have with them and the project you worked on.
Basically I sent a dark tune into a competition, they co signed it and we've become friends, I guess. I don't make music
like the Wu, and my direction is not really Wu apart from how hard the shit is and that it's from the street. I want to
do this shit independently because that's what I'm about, I'd rather die an artist on my terms. BUT, GZA is one of my
favorite writers, and I was raised on that shit, so to be able to send my little rap songs to those big time guys to give me
feedback is actually really cool.
What direction do you see M.C. Woody going in the next 2-5 years?
My music is my biography so hopefully not in the ground. But wherever my life goes I'll be sure to write about it as
dark and honestly as I can. But, Part 2 of my hip hop story should be done next year, and I'll be touring Land of The
Blind part 2 and 3 when the are realeased on Blackout with my Bros.
What is the next thing on the table for M.C. Woody?
Part two of my hip hop to close out that chapter of my life, I'm happy now, I'm not hurting people, I’m in love and I
have my family close. So it’s time to finish off this horror and start something else, probably a UK, USA, NZ thing so I
can steal some of those UK rappers.
If you could work with any artist in their prime, just 1, dead or alive who would that be?
O.D.B
Where can we see and hear more of M.C. Woody?
On tour with State Of Mind Drum n Bass
On Spotify
Or on tour when I finally finished this crazy dark horror.
RUSTY YOKES
@rustyyokes
Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Edwin Delarosa, I’ve been using the moniker of rusty_yokes for tattooing
and now this Anime project. I’ve been involved with tattooing for
about 7 years now and watching anime for even longer so it seemed fitting.
What is the reason behind this particular anime project?
This project is still fairly new, I started this in February of this year and the more I delve into this project the more reasons
I find to do it. Initially it was me trying to relieve some stress by drawing some of my favorite childhood characters
and the nostalgia of it motivated me to share that with anyone who has the same interests.
How long have you been drawing anime characters?
Anime was the first thing I remember drawing consistently as a kid. I wasted a lot of paper drawing Future Trunks, it
was a daily thing. Of course over time I strayed away from drawing anime but coming back to it after so many years
has been so fun.
Have you been commissioned to do any murals of these characters?
A majority of the work I’ve done has been commission based. No murals yet, but that would be amazing. I think this
project resonates with people because it brings them back to specific parts of their childhood. One of the cooler things
about this experience has been people telling me about all the things they remember when they first saw a scene of a
show or movie. It’s been really interesting.
Are we able to find any of your work in art galleries?
At the moment no but I was fortunate enough to be a part of an art show last month where I showcased this project. It
was a great experience and it pushes me to do more shows so that’s something that I will be focusing on more.
I would love to have a table book of your artwork. Is that available, or will it be in the future?
I would love to have a book or collection of work that can be shared on a larger scale. I can say that’s a goal I’d like to
cross off the list.
What inspires you to draw and create such detailed visual images?
A lot of it comes from the love I have for these shows and characters. Especially if it’s a memorable or iconic scene,
there is a pressure to take these images and translate them into tattoo designs but still keep the essence of the original
source. It makes the end result a lot more satisfying when it comes out well.
How important is social media to you as an artist?
Social Media has become very important to me as an artist. At first I didn’t see it that way but Instagram has helped
me so much as an artist. Aside from having a solid support system for your craft there’s so much inspiration and great
work being shared. It’s a tool I feel all artist should embrace.
Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?
There’s so much that can be said but I tell people to always believe in what they create, learn from everything you create
and lastly to be open for improvement no matter what direction your art takes you.
Where can we see more of your work? (Please include all social media pages)
I’ve transitioned to solely using Instagram for my work, it’s such an interactive platform so that’s where I post mostly.
My handle is @rusty_yokes, I also have an email for any questions or inquiries. www.eddytattoos@gmail.com
18 | @wavemag @thewaveX | 19
Leighanne Devaney
@devaneytattoos
Did you do any of them yourself?
I did tattoo myself once to practice before I was trained but I chose the bottom of my calf which wasn’t the best place
and was awkward and I gave in and got someone else to finish it.
Do your friends let you tattoo them for practice?
If I have designs I want to play around with close friends, regular customers and my partner all let me try new things
on them.
How long have you been a tattoo
artist?
I have been in the tattoo industry
6 years. I did a 3year apprenticeship
and then I opened up my
own studio on 22 August 2015
and my business has been growing
ever since .
Do you remember the first tattoo
that you ever done ?
I’d always loved the idea of being
a tattoo artist but when I first left
college I started working at Tesco’s
and earning money and just
forgot about tattooing. My mate
was into tattooing and asked me
to tattoo a little tribal symbol on
his arm as he knew I loved artwork
and interested in the tattoo
scene and that’s the first tattoo
I ever did and that’s where my
story begun.
Do you find that there are any
challenges that you face being a
female artist?like do some think
you aren’t that good because you’re
a women ?
I sometimes get asked if I’m the
artist in my studio when I answer
the door and when I say yes
people look at me surprised at
the fact I’m a women and say you
20 | @wavemag
don’t look like your typical tattoo
artist. (Whatever we are meant to
look like :) ) but my artwork does
the talking and I let them judge
for themselves.
How would you describe your
tattooing style ?
I would say my tattooing style
is detailed and intricate. I love
realism, detailed pieces and really
enjoy a challenge. I love both
colour and black and grey work
with hints of colour.
What is the secret to achieving
such detail in your Tattoos ?
I focus and study the piece I’m
working on before I tattoo it.
Where is the most difficult place to
tattoo someone?
I think the heel near the ankle
bone is always a difficult area to
tattoo.
How many tattoos do you
currently have ?
I currently have 11 tattoos but
would like a few more. I’m just
waiting on a space for the artist
I currently want to get tattooed
by .
Should people get tattoos while intoxicated?
No I don’t think being intoxicated and getting tattoos mix at all.
What has been the most bizarre tattoo you have ever done on someone ?
I once tattooed tigger out of Winnie the Pooh as a chef with a fork and steak in one hand and utensils in the other ,
stood next to a bbq with a kebab on it.
What tattoo artists, if any, do you draw inspiration from?
During my apprenticeship I really loved joe carpenters work and was really inspired by it and I still look at his work
now along with Ricky Lopez , Steve Butcher, Ryan the scientist smith and Jenna Kerr.
What’s the secret of being a great tattoo artist?
I personally think you just have to love art in order to be a great tattoo artist . Perseverance and stepping out your
comfort zone .
Who is your favourite tattoo artist?
My favourite artist of all time would have to be Steve butcher I think his attention to detail is incredible. But there are
many talented artists out there .
For a first timer, where should they get a tattoo if they do not like a lot of pain?
For a first timer who isn’t good with pain should maybe have a shoulder or thigh tattoo as I have found people find
them the most comfortable places.
Words of advice for anyone that wants to become a tattoo artist ?
Anyone wanting to become a tattoo artist need to be dedicated to the tattoo industry and really be passionate about
their artwork and want to stand out.
Where can we get inked by you and see more of your work?
You can get inked by me at Devaney Tattoos in Norfolk (England) .
Can check out my work on Facebook -Devaney Tattoos and removal
Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you are
from.
Hi. I am Misses Brooklynn, from Phoenix Arizona.
Now that we finally got you on our cover, what’s been going on
with you? We see that you stay busy.
Working full time, progressing with my modeling career and
pursuing event coordinating.
Why did you start getting tattoos?
I have always had a passion for tattoos. Now its become a
form of expression for me.
Which of your tattoos has the most meaning to you?
I would have to say my forever young on my stomach. Its a
reminder of overcoming some health issues and how lucky I
am to just wake up every morning.
How do people look at you when they see you have so many
tattoos?
It really just depends. However, it is becoming more
acceptable in today's society.
Why do you think that tattoos are now more accepted in society?
I think it's become more of an art for so many instead of a
negative attribute.
Why did you choose tattoos as a means of expression?
I am very outspoken. So, I basically wear my trial and tribulations
on my skin.
What is special about tattoos that you don’t get in other art
forms?
I get to display my art every day no matter where I go or what
I'm doing.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
Carl Grace and multiple over seas artists.
Being so beautifully tatted, do you attend any tattoo conventions?
I attend expos when I can between work and when I am hosting
an event.
How important is social media to you as a model?
Its It’s very important. I basically started with social media its
it’s made it possible to interact with fans internationally as
well as supporting small businesses and brands.
What advice do you have for aspiring alternative / tattoo models?
Focus on your end goal. Never allow the negative to discourage
you and always remember where you came from.
SARAH
@sarahamagicmakeup
Please introduce yourself and tell the readers where you are from.
My name is Sarah and I’m from a small town in the South West of France. I’m
35 but I’m really a child at heart =) I like to think that I’m a work in progress,
always seeking improvement and peace. My favorite things in the world are my
family, animals, nature, food, reading, painting, music, dreaming and pranking
my loved ones lol
When did you decide that you wanted become a makeup artist?
I’m not sure, I remember sitting on my mom’s bed back when I was a little girl
and watching her do her makeup routine. I was fascinated with the colors,
smells, textures and the subtle transformation… But it wasn’t until 2015 that I
decided I’d had enough of working for other people and I wanted to pursue my
own dreams.
Where and when did you realize that you had such an amazing skill?
Oh, I do not think I have amazing skills honestly… I’m extremely self-conscious
for starter and I « hate » almost every makeup I create. Sometimes I like
them but after a while I only see all the little things I could have done better
lol. I know I’m too hard on myself but I’m just obsessed with getting better and
creating the things that I visualise in my mind. On a positive note, I do appreciate
my incredible progress over the last couple years. I started doing very
simple makeups that I had a hard time finishing.. and if anyone had told me
I’d do the kind of illusion makeups I do now I would have laughed in their face
(and then cried lol)
34 | @wavemag @thewaveX | 35
Has special effect / creative make up always been
what you wanted to do?
Yes, it has. Deep down I’ve always wanted to
work on movie sets or photo shoots. I love painting,
I’m a colour addict… and I always wanted
to be a makeup, sfx artist. It just took me half my
life to have the courage to choose the right path
for me.
Where does your inspiration for your ideas come
from?
Anything really, but mostly nature, animals.
I am very inspired by the sky, I love painting
clouds and the cosmos, nebulae, constellations…
I can’t get enough of them ! lol And since I’m a
bit of a nerd/geek/dork, I also love recreating
movie / tv show / video games characters.
Who are some of the makeup artists that you
admire?
Oh my, that’s a tough one because I follow a
looooot of painfully talented people. I don’t
want to forget any of them but I guess my crushes
are : https://www.instagram.com/
@akalyna_ne_verba, @mimles,
@statementpiecemakeup, @bluemagicmakeup,
@jordanhanz, @iamlourdesvarela,
@caffeinated_dreamer_, @georginaryland,
@marcellobarenghi, @akianeart,
@jennluvsmakeup....
Which one is your favorite makeup artist?
I don’t know if I can answer that… it’s so hard to
just pick one ! I think my biggest influence has
always been my mom =) As for my favorite artist
on instagram hmmmmmmmmmm... I’ll go with
Akalyna (@akalyna_ne_verba) she’s beautiful,
damn talented and such a sweetheart. She’s one
of the reasons I pushed myself so hard, because I
wanted to be as good as her !!! lol
What has been your favorite creation to date?
Of mine? Oh dear lol…. Hmmmmmmm….
It’s usually the last one because I have usually
improved since the previous makeup but if i had
to pick just one…. I have two favorites, my « paradise
garden » one, that I painted for my mom’s
birthday and my Skull Illusion one.
How important is social media to you and your
career as a makeup artist?
I have mixed feelings about social media. One
the one hand they can be very time consuming
BUT on the other hand they have really helped
me grow my audience, especially Instagram. The
makeup community on instagram is the best in
my opinion… it’s extremely supportive and not
as competitive or mean as on other platforms,
like twitter or facebook. I need social media to
put myself out there and make a name for myself
but I try n ot to spend too much time on my
phone
Do you have any advice for aspiring makeup
artist?
I get asked that a lot and I really don’t know
what to say because I’m self-taught and I’m not
sure I’m the best person to give someone else
advice lol… but I will say what I always say :
try and get quality products, because it REALLY
makes a difference. I used to paint with really
really cheap paint and I guess it was all right.
And one day I got my first real professional
bodypaint… And WOW it just changed my life
and I started painting better stuff
be patient… growing an audience, improving
your skills takes a looooot of time… months,
years… do collabs with other artists, the support
and sharing of your work will help you grow and
get known. It’s also a great way to share tips and
learn from other and keep your motivation high
(I shouldn’t give this advice because I’m very
bad at following it lol but…) be kind to yourself
and embrace your beauty, accept your flaws and
see every new creation as a success, even when
they’re not up to your expectations. Every step
you make is a step closer to your goal
If you could leave one mark on the world, what
would it be?
Oh I don’t know if I want to leave a mark on the
world, honestly. I just want to be remembered as
a good person I guess. And if I can help others
express themselves through art and grow as an
artist, then I can die fulfilled =)
Where can we see more of your work? (Please
include all social media pages)
I’m almost on every social platform imaginable
lol… but my most active pages are on Facebook,
instagram, twitter, google plus and my youtube
channel
Juston Cardwell
@cardwellphotography
Being one of my favorite photographers, it’s a pleasure to feature you and your work in this issue of The WAVE INK.
With that being said, would you please introduce yourself to our readers and let them know where you’re from?
My Name is Juston Cardwell, I am located just outside of Portland, Oregon
How long have you been a photographer?
I have been a photographer for about 30 years.
This is your third cover for The WAVE INK, and this time around you also have 2 other models featured in the same
issue. What is the secret to capturing such great images?
The biggest thing I love to do is always have fun, don’t treat like a big production. Find what defines your model and
work with it, sometimes that means thinking outside of the box.
Have beautiful women always been the subjects of your shoots?
No, I shot with everything from newborn babies pooping on you during a shoot…. To jet engine, flame throwing funny
cars hitting 200 mph
What do you look for when choosing a model to shot?
Just someone who is really wanting to be there, if its not fun…. I don’t want to be there either :)
You recently mentioned that you shot 30 models in a weekend, what was that experience like and how did you pull it
off?
It was a big event, had so much fun. At time points you would be shooting with someone and want to keep going but
then look around and realize time is not standing still and have to move on. I prefer to spend more time with a person
and find what makes them stand out.
Do you prefer to shoot in a studio or on location?
Being that I am from Oregon weather is not on my side, I have a small studio so I can shoot at all times. Being a single
parent home studio works best for now. Few more years and can leave the nest and shoot so much more on location.
If you had to pick just one, what would you say has been your favorite shoot to date?
My favorite has been when I got to meet one of my Favorite all time superstar ink model …. Heather Moss, I was so
nervous shooting with her. We did good … images were very cool and I like to think we have become friends since
then.
If you could pick any place in the world to shoot, where would be your dream location to have a photoshoot?
I would want some location with the whites sands and the bluest clear waters, bamboo hut and the ability to just melt
and with the view
What is the most important thing that photographers just starting out need to know?
Enjoy what you do, don’t look for short cuts, don’t copy others work… find what makes you stand out from the rest.
There are so many people out there who say they are a photographers…. Just be you and don’t hold back.
Where can we see where can we see more of your work?
I am in the middle of changing up my webpage so for now, My Instagram page is the best…. @cardwellphotography
@rachelless99
Please introduce yourself and tell
the readers where you are from.
My name is Rachelle Hoffman and
I am from Glendale Arizona.
Which of your tattoos has the most
meaning to you?
All of my tattoos are horror movies
that I have loved growing up as a
child up until now so they all have
the same meaning.
Do you remember what your first
tattoo was?
My first tattoo of a memorial piece
for my best friend which has
already been covered up.
Do you know how many tattoos
you have?
All of my tattoos connect so I don’t
know how many I have but I have
over 500 hours worth.
Photos by Juston Cardwell / Cardwell Photography
Which tattoo hurt the most?
The tattoo that hurt me the most
was most definitely my stomach.
42 | @wavemag @thewaveX | 43
What is your favorite tattoo?
It’s really hard to say what my favorite
tattoo is because I like a lot of them I
waited long enough until I found good
quality artists so they all turned out
very nice
What inspired you to turn your body into
a canvas of beautiful art?
Once I got my first tattoo I just became
addicted and decided that I wanted to
go full body suit I just love the look and
I love the style behind it
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
My favorite tattoo artist would have to
be the three that work on me .. Sirris
slay, Poch, Anthony prince.
Being so beautifully tatted, do you attend
any tattoo conventions?
I do attend tattoo conventions us I try
to hit out-of-state ones as often as I can
and I al-ways hit all of the ones that are
at home
How important is social media to you as
a model?
Social media I think is very important
in both the modeling industry and the
tattoo indus-try because it reaches so
many different people so I feel like it is
a very important part of what we do
Do you have any advice for aspiring
alternative / tattoo models?
My advice for any aspiring models is
just be dedicated and stay focused be
ready to put in a lot of time and dedication
don’t give up and just say confident
but also stay humble
Where can we see more of you?
Irene Silver
@ms.irenesilver
Please introduce yourself and tell the
readers where you are from.
My name is Irene Silver, I am a
tattoo/fetish model/performer and
photographer. I am from Arizona
though I moved around a lot
throughout my youth.
Which of your tattoos has the most
meaning to you?
That’s pretty much impossible for me
to choose. I go though a lengthy process
when deciding to add more art
to my body. They all have an absurd
amount of meaning behind them.
Do you remember what your first
tattoo was?
I do indeed remember my first
Tattoo. I was 17 in Jerome, Arizona
ghost hunting with my mom for her
birthday. We got matching ghosts
with a little J in it that I drew up
while in town. It’s on my left hip.
Do you know how many tattoos you
have?
16
Photos by Juston Cardwell / Cardwell Photography
Which tattoo hurt the most?
Its difficult to say which tattoo hurt
the most since all of mine are so
large. I would have to say the most
sensitive area for me was my butt
cheeks.
What is your favorite tattoo?
Oh man, another tough one because
I love them all. I just got my Phoenix
across my back last year and I am still
rather smitten with it so lets go with
that one.
@thewaveX | 47
What inspired you to turn your body into
a canvas of beautiful art?
All of my tattoos describe life changing
moments in my life. They tell stories of
the people I have met, both the mistakes
and the victories I have encountered, as
well as the lessons and values I want to
carry with me. Almost all of my tattoos
are done by one artist (Aj Larson). Aj
freehands all of his work on me so we
follow the flow of my body when creating.
Sometimes the pieces manifest as
large works and sometimes small. Him
and I vibe really well in the creative
process so the transition kind of just
happened over the years as I experienced
new things in life and he helped
me record them.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist?
Aj Larson. You can find him under Blk
Jax Tattoo.
Being so beautifully tatted, do you attend
any tattoo conventions?
I do attend and sometimes compete at
the conventions that roll through town.
I also perform at them here and there.
In fact, I’ll be doing a violet wand performance
at this year’s Hell City.
How important is social media to you as
a model?
Ironically, I am a bit of an introvert so
social media is a pain in my booty. As a
model however, it greatly impacts your
success. Especially with how today’s
society receives information.
Do you have any advice for aspiring alternative
/ tattoo models?
Sleeves are key to publications and don’t
care too much about what people say.
Model for yourself and no one else.
Phill Myatt
@tattoophill
How long have you been a tattoo artist?
I have only been tattooing full time for about 4 years.
That time has gone nowhere and I still feel like I’m learning
as much now as I did when I started.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you ever done?
Haha, the first tattoo I ever did was on my own leg. I was
shitting myself. I didn’t really know what I was doing or
how it was going to look. It wasn’t brilliant and unfortunately
I see it every day. A lot of people tend to see it as I
get asked the question quite often. However, I don’t mind
as it reminds me of where I started and I would never
remove or cover it.
How would you describe your tattooing style?
My tattooing style, if I had to categorize it I would say
black and grey realism. I tend to do a lot of portraits so
naturally I try to get them looking as close to the reference
photograph as possible. Capturing personality is
what I think makes a good portrait. When doing designs
I like to layer imagery, adding different elements, and
where possible, I like to tell a story through the design.
What is the secret to achieving such detail in your tattoos?
Patience. Most of my tattoos take around six to seven
hours and often my work has quite a lot of detail, so I try
to take my time and make sure I get all the details that
need to be there. I find contrast and saturation just as important
in my work. I think the balance of light and dark
is what I look at the most when tattooing.
Where is the most difficult place for you to tattoo someone?
It really depends on the person, their skin, and what they
are wanting in that area, but in general, I find just below
the ribs on the side a particularly difficult spot as the skin
is so stretchy. Same with backs. It’s such a good large area
but I never think the skin tattoos that well. Give me lower,
inner forearm, or lower leg any day and I’d be a happy
man :)
How may tattoos do you currently have?
Not enough! I currently have all my arms, most of my
legs and chest done. However, I’m always looking to get
tattooed, as I now look at the blank spaces as opposed to
what I’ve got tattooed.
Did you do any of them yourself?
As I mentioned before, the first tattoo I did was on myself.
I’ve tattooed myself twice now but I don’t any more
as I’d rather let other people tattoo me. I enjoy spending
time with the people who tattoo me. I enjoy the whole
process of it. From seeing how people put designs together,
to their process of tattooing. There is always something
to learn, so it’s a win win.
Do your friends let you tattoo them for practice?
My friends and family were awesome when I started
tattooing. They trusted me to get near them with my machines,
which was brave on their part. I learned a lot from
tattooing my friends and family. They give you honest
feedback and it’s good to be able to follow the healing
process. I’m very grateful to everyone who lets me tattoo
them, especially those who trusted me in the earlier days
of tattooing.
Should people get tattoos while intoxicated?
Nope! However it’s always nice towards the end of the day
when you’ve had an awesome client in to crack a beer and
see the day out right ;)
What has been the most bizarre tattoo you have ever done
on someone?
I think the whole idea of getting a permanent image on
your body is bizarre.
Words of advice for anyone that wants to become a tattoo
artist?
Tattooists always answer this question the same way but
it’s true; draw and keep drawing, get an apprenticeship!
Simple…
It’s not easy to get into this game. I found it hard. It took
a while. The best advice I would say is draw lots, play
around with composition and contrast whether it be with
drawing, photography or digital artwork, and build a
strong portfolio. I found it hard to get an apprenticeship.
Studios didn’t really want to know, even though I studied
art at college and university… so, I didn’t end up going
down that route. I got tired of getting turned away from
studios, I am mostly self taught, but you’ve got to do what
you’ve got to do! I would definitely recommend getting
an apprenticeship though, as you learn a lot of valuable
lessons and improve much quicker.
Where can we get inked by you and see more of your work?
I am currently working out of my studio @blackhausgallery
in Leek Staffordshire UK. I will be working at various
conventions next year. To see more of my work head on
over to my Instagram @tattoophill or my Facebook page
I'm The Support is developed to provide a place for conversation for those who need support for themselves
after being the support. Sometimes the only support for someone else, no one realizes or takes into
consideration that there are people that are struggling to deal with the outside world and even their own
inner circles. One of our main goals is to establish a dialogue with members of the heterosexual community
that are faced with that situation of standing by a family member or friend that has confided in them.
We want people that find themselves in similar situations facing the same issues, to come and have a place
to talk about how it effects their life in whatever way, positive or negative, with people that that completely
understand because they live it also.
I'm The Support are members of the heterosexual community that offer support to the straight community
that support and struggle with trying to support family and friends that are a part of the LGBTQ
Community.
