Young witness recalls
seeing Wigram air crash
Last week, Western
News reported on
the memorial plaque
dedicated to those who
died in the 1953 air force
crash, in Wigram, which
has been confirmed
for unveiling later this
year. Reporter Matt
Salmons talks to Wigram
resident Peter Smith who
remembers the tragedy
WIGRAM’S PETER Smith
remembers October 15, 1953,
well. It was the day he witnessed
the country’s deadliest domestic
air force crash at the age of 14.
Living in Prebbleton and
with an uncle in the Royal
New Zealand Air Force, Mr
Smith said seeing aircraft
overhead was a common thing at
the time.
While out on his bicycle with
a friend, an odd engine noise
alerted him that something was
amiss that day. When he looked
up Mr Smith said he saw one of
the Devons go down.
Mr Smith said the boys
grabbed their bikes and in spite
of no smoke to follow they “rode
like mad down a shingle road”
towards the crash site, coming to
within 150m of the wreckage.
Mr Smith said ambulance officers
already on scene told the
two boys to stay back.
“I didn’t see a body, which I’m
very glad of as that would have
haunted me,” Mr Smith said.
He estimated that including
have only been around 20 people
in the field, most of whom were
site, naturally, there were bits of
aircraft around. We asked if we
his bike and took it home.
Local heroes get $10k for organisations
WESTFIELD Riccarton will
award three local heroes who
have supported their community
with $10,000 each so their
organisations can continue its
good work.
Coming from a pool of six
finalists, the three recipients
were selected through a tight
voting process, with hundreds
of votes coming in for all six
finalists.
Trust youth
worker Mana
Harema
Available 24-7
to help promote
greater connection
between
young people,
their families, schools and the
wider Riccarton community, Mr
Harema said young people were
capable, but “at times just need a
guiding hand.”
“We just want to walk alongside
young people who are
having a tough time, as their
adult but friendly figures who are
helping them through that stage
in their lives,” he said.
Mr Harema also worked as a
community worker, supporting
people falling through the gaps
to connect with their wider community
and find ways to make
their own contribution. He provided
safe group activities and
sports for youth, role modelling,
mentoring and helped them gain
access to services where necessary,
challenging anti-social
behaviours along the way.
La Vida Youth Trust would
use the $10,000 Westfield Local
Heroes grant to run junior sports
programmes for 40 weeks and to
continue funding Mr Harema’s
role.
for ParaFed Canterbury,
Mrs Pawson offered a different
sporting event each week
for children and youth aged five
to 21 with physical disabilities.
Ranging from football to laser
tag, the events gave both young
people and parents a chance
to build support networks and
make friends.
“We feel it’s great to have our
organisation recognised for what
it does,” Mrs Pawson said.
Families paid a small annual
fee for their kids to participate,
so ParaFed would use the
$10,000 grant to keep participation
costs to a minimum.
•Tourette’s
Association
New Zealand
founder
Robyn
Tremlow
When Robyn
Twemlow’s
daughter
was diagnosed with Tourette’s
syndrome at age nine, she had
no one to turn to for support,
information or advice. She didn’t
even know of anyone with the
syndrome, which added to her
isolation.
Five years after founding the
Tourette’s Association New Zealand,
Mrs Tremlow has established
a support network across
the country, raising awareness
in schools and the wider community.
Through the association, Mrs
Tremlow takes a hands-on approach.
Visiting parents, talking
at schools, lobbying the Government
and running the annual
Camp Twitch, where children
and young adults with Tourette’s
Westfield Riccarton’s
local heroes will be
celebrated in the
shopping centre on
Saturday during a
Westfield local heroes
market day, from
12.30–2.30pm.
can be themselves without fear.
Mrs Tremlow said the $10,000
would go towards improving
Camp Twitch and funding professional
development.
Westfield Riccarton centre
manager Kirstie McNulty said
the company was thrilled to
honour deserving community
members and support their
work.
“We have seen such an overwhelming
response to the Westfield
Local Heroes programme
and would like to acknowledge
each of the wonderful community
members who have been
nominated throughout this
process.
It’s incredible to see all the
work that our community
members are doing to support
the people of Christchurch and
we hope to see their initiatives
continue to benefit the local area
and assist those in need,” Mrs
McNulty said.
WRECKAGE: The crash site at Wigram.
Crash remembered
•From page 1
The story in last week’s
Western News detailing Ron
Fensom’s efforts to have a
memorial plaque placed near the
crash site brought the event back
to the forefront of Mr Smith’s
mind.
“It brings back a lot of memories.
It’s never stopped flashing
through my mind. I’ll always
remember the crash.
“At the time, I wasn’t sure how
I felt . . . but as the years have
passed I often think of those
brave young pilots who lost their
lives while on duty for their
country and how it must have
affected their friends and family,
then and now.”
After last week’s story, Mr
Fensom said he was receiving
IN-FLIGHT: A Devon over the
Canterbury Plains.
feedback from people interested
in the unveiling and the crash.
The unveiling is set for the
afternoon of October 15, to
coincide with the date and time
of the crash. Mr Fensom said
he hoped to soon get in contact
with the families of the pilots
who had died, so they would be
able to attend.
The Wigram crash remains
New Zealand’s worst
domestic air force crash
with seven men killed. The
two RNZAF de Havilland
Devon aircraft were part of a
flyover of Christchurch Airport
marking the 1953 London
to Christchurch Air Race
prize-giving ceremony. While
the two Devons awaited
clearance to land at Wigram
Airfield, one clipped the wing
of the other. Both lost control
and crashed into paddocks
killing all crew members.
They were:
Squadron Leader
Sholto R Duncan
Pilots – Flight Lieutenants
Edwin Ebbett and Erling
Ziesler
Crewmen – Brian J Keogh,
Eric Melrose, William
Sharman and Russell
Woodcock.
BEFORE THE 1953 London
to Christchuch Air Race,
commercial air travel to New
Zealand from Europe wasn’t
frequent.
Organised by the Canterbury
International Air Race Council,
the 1953 event would be the
longest of its kind, tasking
flight crews with the 19,756km
distance in two categories; speed
or transport handicap. It would
both put the country on the map
and showcase the future of international
commercial travel.
Crews from the United Kingdom,
Holland, Australia and a
single RNZAF crew left London
on October 8.
In just under 24 hours, the
crew of a Royal Australian
Air Force Canberra bomber
touched down to cheering
FLYOVER:
The Devons
passing
over the
ceremony.
Two would
collide and
crash while
awaiting
clearance
to land
afterwards.
Why the Devons were airborne
crowds in Christchurch to win
the speed section. In the transport
section, in spite of coming
in behind a British European
Airways flight (carrying the first
copy of Sir Edmund Hillary’s
film Conquest of Everest to reach
New Zealand) the Dutch KLM
Airlines DC-6A Liftmaster carrying
50 Dutch immigrants won
the day.
New Zealand’s only entry had
to pull out after encountering
issues over Sri Lanka, the crew
only saved by the actions of
squadron leader Larry Siegert.
In celebration of the race, a 27
plane flyover of the prize-giving
was organised by the RNZAF
for October 15.
Two of those, NZ1810 and
NZ1811, would encounter
tragedy on their return to base.
Hornby goalkeeper’s talent recognised
SUCCESS: Georgia Bonne is now a national age-group
representative in both hockey and volleyball.
• By Jacob Page
A LUNG condition hasn’t
stopped Hornby and St Andrew’s
College goalie Georgia Bonne
from achieving her aspirations in
the sport.
THe 16-year-old was one of
12 Cantabrians named in the
boys and girls national under-18
talent squads to attend a camp in
Auckland in October.
Out of six goalkeepers in the
squad, she is the only one from
the South Island.
“Back in year 7 when I was at St
Margaret’s, I was playing in the
field and I was trialling for teams,
but I wasn’t very fit and with my
lung condition my coach realised
that I probably wasn’t going to
make rep teams,” Georgia said.
“I was asked if I’d try goalie
and I just loved it.”
It’s fair to say Georgia’s fitness
has improved since she has
gone on to be a New Zealand
age-group representative in
volleyball.
Georgia was on a volleyball
trip to Thailand in the weeks
leading up to the national
under-18 hockey tournament
which hampered her preparation.
“To be honest, I was thinking
I’d be the reserve goalie for
Canterbury because I was the
up starting in that tournament,”
she said.
Canterbury were runners-up in
the tournament, losing the final
in a penalty shoot-out.
Georgia said she was eager
to test herself against the best
age-group talent in the country
and she wasn’t afraid to speak
up if her defence needed it.“I’m
a competitive person so I will
say my bit, but off the field it’s all
good . . . it’s just the game.
“THe camp is a chance to see
where I’m at nationally and work
on things I need to improve on,”
she said.
Georgia believes playing
volleyball and being a goalie
helps her athleticism in both
sports.
“Hockey isn’t as physical as
ST THOMAS’ rugby
league coach Andrew
Auimatagi is eager to
make sure his team
doesn’t let their national
ranking slip at the
secondary schools
tournament next
month.
The Canterbury Bulls
and Linwood Keas coach
is back with the team once
again for the Auckland
tournament from September
2 to 7 and he believes
the team can make the
semi-finals for the second
year in a row.
“Last year we probably
had a once in every 20
years team,” he said.
SPORTS
“But there’s a lot of
natural talent out there
and I hope we can crack
the top-four again.
St Thomas’ is ranked
fourth seed for the tournament.
“We’re lucky that most
of the squad are involved
in the first XV rugby
programme at St Thomas’
and then many of them
play rugby league for the
Hornby Panthers after
that.
“I’m hoping that familiarity
will be a strength for
us.”
TOP TALENT: St
Thomas’ rugby
league player
Caius Faatili will be
key to his school’s
national secondary
schools rugby
league hopes next
month.
Top-four goal for St Thomas’
The forward pack will
be bolstered by brothers
Caius and Felix Faatili.
“Caius is a year 12 but
has plenty of experience
and was a national agegroup
rep at the 16s level
last year and has been
linked with NRL clubs,”
Auimatagi said.
“His younger brother,
Felix is only year 10 but
may be a bit bigger than
his older brother eventually
and he’s showing
plenty of promise.
The squad also has eight
South Island representatives.
Haeata Community
Campus will also be sending
a team to the tournament.
Chemical will
kill lake weed
at The Groynes
A CHEMICAL treatment that
is harmless to fish and plant
life will be used this week to
eradicate an invasive weed
choking lakes in The Groynes.
The weed, lagrosiphon major,
which forms dense mats of vegetation,
has affected lakes at the
popular recreation reserve since
2014.
There has been concerns that
the annual Take a Kid Fishing
day, set to be held at the The
Groynes in October, might be
postponed because of the weed
infestation.
The city council commissioned
environmental consultants Boffa
Miskell to undertake a report
which recommended using the
chemical Endothall to fully
eradicate the aquatic weed.
It found the herbicide had no
known negative impacts on native
fish and plants. The reserve’s
fishing lakes were closed on
Thursday and will reopen on
August 23.
The weeds will be removed by
a mechanical harvester six weeks
after the spraying.
Environment Canterbury’s
regional biosecurity team is
working closely with city council
staff on the project.
FOR MORE than six years,
inmates from a Christchurch
Men’s Prison unit have been
providing weekly deliveries
of fresh vegetables to Aviva, a
local family and sexual violence
support service.
The prison’s vegetable garden
was started in 2012. And since
early 2013, 625 70-litre crates of
produce have been delivered to
Aviva – 63 of them since January
this year.
“Prison vegetable gardens
are an important training and
therapeutic activity for prisoners
and the skills they learn are
beneficial for both the individual
gardener and the community,”
says corrections officer Gerard
Grout.
Aviva marketing and
communications manager Julie
McCloy said the vegetables are
a weekly highlight for many
families.
“We see a lot of people who
struggle to afford fresh veges –
and some who struggle to afford
food in general. The vegetables
from the prison are an absolutely
vital component in making
many families’ nutrition and
budget much healthier.”
“Even in winter, there are
usually enough vegetables to
make the run worthwhile,”
said Mr Grout. ”This week the
unit dispatched four crates of
potatoes, silverbeet, cabbage,
cauliflower etc. During the
warmer seasons, up to six or
seven crates can be delivered.”
About 70 per cent of the
prisoners in the 20-bed unit
have prison jobs, including in
the distribution warehouse or
collecting rubbish across the
prison.
Mr Grout said these men often
spend their weekends working
in the gardens.
Vegetables grown at the unit
include beans, beetroot, leek,
cabbage, onion, rhubarb, spring
onion, potato, sweetcorn, radish,
cauliflower, brussels sprouts,
tomatoes, cucumber, pumpkin,
broccoli, carrot, celery, parsnip,
lettuce, garlic, turnip, silverbeet,
spinach, and peas. Other seasonal
products include strawberries,
lemons and raspberries. The
Wow, you’ve made it
look like new again!
a comment brett Muir hears frequently in his ‘Groutpro’ business, as he takes
care of grout related problems confronting many householders.
“After years of constant use, unsealed grout will become discoloured” Brett says.
That’s because grout (even new grouts) are porous and absorb dirt, grime and spills.
The deep clean results that come with professional tile and grout cleaning, prepare for the
essential next step. “Application of a colourseal coating on the grout will make a transforming
difference in appearance” Brett says. With almost 100 colour options, coloured grout sealer is
non porous and waterproof making cleaning so much easier.
replacing cracked tiles, resiliconing shower edges, removing calcium buildup on
shower tiles, regrouting cracked grout and all tile related issues are part of the
Groutpro service.
before
for an uplift of your tiled area:
Shower, bathroom, kitchen, pool
surround, deck etc. Brett will give you a
quote and honest, professional advice on
your tiles and grout.
REMARKABLE CONCERT EXPERIENCE
THE NZSO AND THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION!
TO CELEBRATE their 20th year e
Phoenix Foundation have joined forces
with the NZSO for a remarkable concert
experience.
e Phoenix Foundation is one of the
most iconic New Zealand bands of the 21st
century. Formed in Wellington in the late-
90s, they have been lauded here and
overseas and feted by rock royalty, from
Neil Finn and Jarvis Cocker to Iggy Pop.
e band has also contributed to several
movie soundtracks, including film-maker
Taika Waititi’s celebrated box office smash
Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
If you are not yet familiar with their
music, you are in for a treat; if you are, you
are likely to encounter their most
challenging and assured set of songs yet.
From the soaring soundscape of opener
“Mountain” and the frantic, joyful surge of
the David Fridmann (e Flaming Lips,
Tame Impala)-mixed “Bob Lennon, John
Dylan”, through to the trippy, delicate
“Prawn” and “Myth”, and the self-styled
manifesto of sorts that is the title track,
this is the sound of a band at the top of
their game, making music that is every bit
as enjoyable as it is detailed and wellcraed.
And with a substantial back catalogue of
much-loved songs from their five previous
albums – “Horsepower”, “Pegasus”, “Happy
Ending”, “Buffalo” and “Fandango” – to
draw from, they are a band who have
earned their place in the hearts and minds
of their audience, and who are equal parts
charm, hard work and inspiration, and
who fully deserve your attention, just as
you fully deserve the wonderful music they
make.
Drawing from their much loved
catalogue, e Phoenix Foundation and
Orchestra will perform unique
arrangements of audience favourites and
deep album cuts.
It will also be a rare opportunity to hear
their soundtrack work performed live.
e NZSO and e Phoenix Foundation
perform in Christchurch at the Isaac
eatre Royal on ursday 30 August 2018.
7pm start. Tickets on sale now at Ticketek.
