the memorial plaque 

dedicated to those who 

died in the 1953 air force 

crash, in Wigram, which 

has been confirmed 

for unveiling later this 

year. Reporter Matt 

Salmons talks to Wigram 

resident Peter Smith who 

remembers the tragedy 

WIGRAM’S PETER Smith 

remembers October 15, 1953, 

well. It was the day he witnessed 

the country’s deadliest domestic 

air force crash at the age of 14. 

Living in Prebbleton and 

with an uncle in the Royal 

New Zealand Air Force, Mr 

Smith said seeing aircraft 

overhead was a common thing at 

the time. 

While out on his bicycle with 

a friend, an odd engine noise 

alerted him that something was 

amiss that day. When he looked 

up Mr Smith said he saw one of 

the Devons go down. 

Mr Smith said the boys 

grabbed their bikes and in spite 

of no smoke to follow they “rode 

like mad down a shingle road” 

towards the crash site, coming to 

within 150m of the wreckage.

Hornby’s Georgia Bonne is the only 

South Island goalie to make the national 

under-18 talent squads. This age group is a 

stepping stone for higher honours. 

Georgia is one determined young sportswoman - and multitalented 

too - having represented New Zealand at volleyball. 

There are 12 Cantabrians named in the boys and girls talent 

squads which will play in Auckland in October. 

St Thomas’ is gearing up for the secondary schools rugby 

league tournament. Canterbury Bulls and Linwood Keas coach 

Andrew Auimatagi is back at the helm for the Auckland tournament 

from September 2 to 7. 

No doubt there will be NRL talent scouts on the sideline.

Local heroes get $10k for organisations

award three local heroes who 

have supported their community 

with $10,000 each so their 

organisations can continue its 

good work. 

Coming from a pool of six 

finalists, the three recipients 

were selected through a tight 

voting process, with hundreds 

of votes coming in for all six 

finalists.

community worker, supporting 

people falling through the gaps

mentoring and helped them gain 

access to services where necessary, 

challenging anti-social 

behaviours along the way.

programmes for 40 weeks and to 

continue funding Mr Harema’s

it does,” Mrs Pawson said. 

Families paid a small annual 

fee for their kids to participate,

$10,000 grant to keep participation 

costs to a minimum.

a support network across 

the country, raising awareness

“It brings back a lot of memories. 

It’s never stopped flashing 

through my mind. I’ll always 

remember the crash. 

“At the time, I wasn’t sure how 

I felt . . . but as the years have 

passed I often think of those 

brave young pilots who lost their 

lives while on duty for their 

country and how it must have 

affected their friends and family, 

then and now.”

NZ1811, would encounter 

tragedy on their return to base.

Hornby goalkeeper’s talent recognised 

SUCCESS: Georgia Bonne is now a national age-group 

representative in both hockey and volleyball.

A LUNG condition hasn’t 

stopped Hornby and St Andrew’s 

College goalie Georgia Bonne 

from achieving her aspirations in 

the sport. 

THe 16-year-old was one of 

12 Cantabrians named in the 

boys and girls national under-18 

talent squads to attend a camp in 

Auckland in October. 

Out of six goalkeepers in the 

squad, she is the only one from 

the South Island. 

“Back in year 7 when I was at St 

Margaret’s, I was playing in the 

field and I was trialling for teams, 

but I wasn’t very fit and with my 

lung condition my coach realised 

that I probably wasn’t going to 

make rep teams,” Georgia said. 

“I was asked if I’d try goalie 

and I just loved it.” 

It’s fair to say Georgia’s fitness 

has improved since she has 

gone on to be a New Zealand 

age-group representative in 

volleyball. 

Georgia was on a volleyball 

trip to Thailand in the weeks 

leading up to the national 

under-18 hockey tournament 

which hampered her preparation. 

“To be honest, I was thinking 

I’d be the reserve goalie for 

Canterbury because I was the 

youngest one there, but I ended 

up starting in that tournament,” 

she said. 

Canterbury were runners-up in 

the tournament, losing the final 

in a penalty shoot-out. 

Georgia said she was eager 

to test herself against the best 

age-group talent in the country 

and she wasn’t afraid to speak 

up if her defence needed it.“I’m 

a competitive person so I will 

say my bit, but off the field it’s all 

good . . . it’s just the game. 

“THe camp is a chance to see 

where I’m at nationally and work 

on things I need to improve on,” 

she said. 

Georgia believes playing 

volleyball and being a goalie 

helps her athleticism in both 

sports. 

“Hockey isn’t as physical as

Chemical will 

kill lake weed 

at The Groynes 

A CHEMICAL treatment that 

is harmless to fish and plant 

life will be used this week to 

eradicate an invasive weed 

choking lakes in The Groynes. 

The weed, lagrosiphon major, 

which forms dense mats of vegetation, 

has affected lakes at the 

popular recreation reserve since 

2014. 

There has been concerns that 

the annual Take a Kid Fishing 

day, set to be held at the The 

Groynes in October, might be 

postponed because of the weed 

infestation. 

The city council commissioned 

environmental consultants Boffa 

Miskell to undertake a report 

which recommended using the 

chemical Endothall to fully 

eradicate the aquatic weed. 

It found the herbicide had no 

known negative impacts on native 

fish and plants. The reserve’s 

fishing lakes were closed on 

Thursday and will reopen on 

August 23. 

The weeds will be removed by 

a mechanical harvester six weeks 

after the spraying. 

Environment Canterbury’s 

regional biosecurity team is 

working closely with city council 

staff on the project. 

FOR MORE than six years, 

inmates from a Christchurch 

Men’s Prison unit have been 

providing weekly deliveries 

of fresh vegetables to Aviva, a 

local family and sexual violence 

support service. 

The prison’s vegetable garden 

was started in 2012. And since 

early 2013, 625 70-litre crates of 

produce have been delivered to 

Aviva – 63 of them since January 

this year. 

“Prison vegetable gardens 

are an important training and 

therapeutic activity for prisoners 

and the skills they learn are 

beneficial for both the individual 

gardener and the community,” 

says corrections officer Gerard 

Grout. 

Aviva marketing and 

communications manager Julie 

McCloy said the vegetables are 

a weekly highlight for many 

families. 

“We see a lot of people who 

struggle to afford fresh veges – 

and some who struggle to afford 

food in general. The vegetables 

from the prison are an absolutely 

vital component in making 

many families’ nutrition and 

budget much healthier.” 

“Even in winter, there are 

usually enough vegetables to 

make the run worthwhile,” 

said Mr Grout. ”This week the 

unit dispatched four crates of 

potatoes, silverbeet, cabbage, 

cauliflower etc. During the 

warmer seasons, up to six or 

seven crates can be delivered.” 

About 70 per cent of the 

prisoners in the 20-bed unit 

have prison jobs, including in 

the distribution warehouse or 

collecting rubbish across the 

prison. 

Mr Grout said these men often 

spend their weekends working 

in the gardens. 

Vegetables grown at the unit 

include beans, beetroot, leek, 

cabbage, onion, rhubarb, spring 

onion, potato, sweetcorn, radish, 

cauliflower, brussels sprouts, 

tomatoes, cucumber, pumpkin, 

broccoli, carrot, celery, parsnip, 

lettuce, garlic, turnip, silverbeet, 

spinach, and peas. Other seasonal 

products include strawberries, 

lemons and raspberries. The

REMARKABLE CONCERT EXPERIENCE 

THE NZSO AND THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION! 

TO CELEBRATE their 20th year e 

Phoenix Foundation have joined forces 

with the NZSO for a remarkable concert 

experience. 

e Phoenix Foundation is one of the 

most iconic New Zealand bands of the 21st 

century. Formed in Wellington in the late- 

90s, they have been lauded here and 

overseas and feted by rock royalty, from 

Neil Finn and Jarvis Cocker to Iggy Pop. 

e band has also contributed to several 

movie soundtracks, including film-maker 

Taika Waititi’s celebrated box office smash 

Hunt for the Wilderpeople. 

If you are not yet familiar with their 

music, you are in for a treat; if you are, you 

are likely to encounter their most 

challenging and assured set of songs yet. 

From the soaring soundscape of opener 

“Mountain” and the frantic, joyful surge of 

the David Fridmann (e Flaming Lips, 

Tame Impala)-mixed “Bob Lennon, John 

Dylan”, through to the trippy, delicate 

“Prawn” and “Myth”, and the self-styled 

manifesto of sorts that is the title track, 

this is the sound of a band at the top of 

their game, making music that is every bit 

as enjoyable as it is detailed and wellcraed. 

And with a substantial back catalogue of 

much-loved songs from their five previous 

albums – “Horsepower”, “Pegasus”, “Happy 

Ending”, “Buffalo” and “Fandango” – to 

draw from, they are a band who have 

earned their place in the hearts and minds 

of their audience, and who are equal parts 

charm, hard work and inspiration, and 

who fully deserve your attention, just as 

you fully deserve the wonderful music they 

make. 

Drawing from their much loved 

catalogue, e Phoenix Foundation and 

Orchestra will perform unique 

arrangements of audience favourites and 

deep album cuts. 

It will also be a rare opportunity to hear 

their soundtrack work performed live.
