Cats In Art
Opened by Ballarat Mayor Cr. Samantha McIntosh, Cats In Art brought over 100 people to the opening, and another 500 visitors through its
first week. Definitely a place in the sun for Krazy Kats and Kittens!
Article sourced from the Ballarat Courier, July 6, 2018
Reporter; Michelle Smith Picture: Kate Healy
CATTY: Ballarat artists are a cat-loving bunch,
coming out in force to offer and create felineinspired
works for Cats in Art.
Ballarat artists are feline-fine and looking forward to the
opening of a collective exhibition that puts their favourite
animals in the spotlight.
And they are continuing a tradition of cats in art that has
stretched through the age.
Cats in Art invited local and regional artists to move
beyond the cute kitten video and to delve in to the
relationship with felines – the pets that choose us, rather
than the other way around.
The works are a mix of genres and depictions of our
feline friends.
Claire Blake was one of more than 40 artists who
responded to a call-out for cat-art earlier this year.
“I’m a crazy cat lady and have a painting of my two black
cats Blade and Nitro, and two ceramic bowls made in
the shape of cat heads.”
“I love cats because they are jerks. They are moody
animals and hard to predict – friendly and loyal but
different from dogs with their own attitudes that are very
individual and unique.”
Most of the artists share her love of cats, either owning
cats or having grown up with them.
“When I was a child I didn’t particularly like my brothers
and sisters and used to talk to out cat a lot,” said
ceramic artist Alison Parkinson. “Cats can be your best
friend and non-judgmental but they are really selfassured
and only do it on their own terms.”
Ms Parkinson doesn’t usually use cats as her inspiration
in her artworks, but created two ceramic cats for the
exhibition.
“The white one has Lindsay-esque human
characteristics, and the black one is a take on the
famous Le Chat Noir, based on the poster for Black Cat
Adult Entertainment in Paris.”
Jo Rye took a slightly different view of cats for her
artwork Feral Terror.
“I do have two pet cats and I love them, but feral cats
take a huge number of native wildlife and in my pen,
ink and watercolour piece I convey how cats may come
across to our native wildlife which is a bit different to
other artworks.”
Cats in Art, and the Kitty Kitty Kitsch exhibition of
humorous cat-inspired toys and products, was at
Backspace Gallery from July 7 – 22.
Wadawurrung story told through new sculpture at North Gardens
Local artist Deanne Gilson will tell the story of her Wadawurrung ancestors through a public sculpture at the North Gardens wetlands.
The City of Ballarat’s Public Art Advisory Committee has recently completed the selection process for the first sculpture commission at the North
Gardens site, with Deanne’s piece – inspired by real lived experience of her ancestors – being chosen.
The sculptural park project coincides with the Lake Wendouree Master Plan, a 20-year strategic plan for the future of Lake Wendouree which
supports the activation of the precinct as an inclusive centre of community life, while protecting its character, views, trees and environmental
functions.
The City of Ballarat, in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and local Indigenous representatives, initiated the sculpture park
project in 2017 to help identify and educate the community about the significance of Lake Wendouree to local Indigenous residents. The new
sculpture park will be located at North Gardens, Lake Wendouree and will feature work of multiple Indigenous artists.
Deanne’s piece will be the first to be installed at the site.
Her work will be centred around a traditional hut made from river stone and stacked rocks, with the hut surrounded by large basalt rocks with
plaques featuring unique designs imbedded into them.
The plaques will have symbols of men, women, children, hunting, artefacts, ceremony, plants, animals/totems and Dreamtime stories associated
with her Wadawurrung ancestors.
The rocks will be connected through a river of pebbles, representing the waterways and Lake Wendouree.
Deanne said the space would become a ceremonial place.
The artwork is scheduled for installation in early 2019.
The City of Ballarat was pleased to make this announcement during NAIDOC Week. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme recognised Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander women’s achievements, their voice and their unwavering passion, which gives strength and has empowered past
generations and paved the way for generations to come.
Further information:
Ballarat has been a gathering place for Indigenous people in south eastern Australia for centuries, and the wetlands around Lake Wendouree have
been identified as a location where gatherings of Indigenous people have previously taken place.
Subsequently, indigenous plantings have been a strong feature of the area’s landscape design, which will be further supported by this $90,000
public art project.
City of Ballarat officers will continue to work with an Indigenous landscape design team to consult with Wadawurrung Elders and commission
new landscape design elements and contemporary sculptures created by south eastern Australian Aboriginal artists for the wetlands area at the
North Gardens.
The first artwork commission was designated for a Wadawurrung artist to showcase the Traditional Owners of Ballarat, the Wadawurrung
people. It is intended the North Gardens will become a place for education, ceremony, storytelling, skills development or demonstration, and
contemplation.
Further public art commissions are yet to be announced. Quotes attributable to Ballarat Mayor Samantha McIntosh: “This is an important project
for Ballarat, one that will help us understand how Lake Wendouree is significant to the local Indigenous people.” “Deanne’s sculpture concept
provides the community with an insight into the identity and stories of her ancestors, the Wadawurrung people – providing a significant cultural
interpretation that will help protect their story and educate generations of Ballarat residents for years to come.
“I congratulate Deanne on her work and look forward to seeing it come together.”
Music Heard Visually: Group Exhibition
Music Heard Visually is a Backspace Gallery exhibition presented as part of the Backspace Guest Curator Project.
A group exhibition curated by local Ballarat visual artist Melinda Muscat, Music Heard Visually reflects Melinda’s
interest in exploring the work of visual artists who are also musicians.
Artists have drawn links and likes between the visual arts and music since the days of Kandinsky, a Russian-born artist who
wrote in 1866, “Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the
hand which plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
Some of the key artists in Music Heard Visually are also noted musicians. Paloma White has drawn swaying, swirling
figures inspired by the Ancient Cretan sound of Xylouris White. Len Hyatt has painted tributes to Blondie, Keith Moon and
others whilst his punchy textured abstract backgrounds come to life as the music. Len’s fellow band mate from 23rd of Elvis
Ronnie McKegan, has painted abstracts which have been referred to as a stained glass window, the contrast between
light and dark represent the multitude of ideas that you filter through when writing a song and the endless paths you can go
down. Whilst Peter Kennedy’s serene surfaces echo melodies of ambient notes based on the horizon lines of the sea.
Not restricted to 2-dimensional work, Music Heard Visually also features renowned Cake Industries pushing the
boundaries of sculpture with their video collage evoking silent movies. Cameron Ross, whose work featured recently
in Ballarat White Night and who is also a musician performing under the name Dishpan Fingers, describes his piece
‘Panache de Nimbus’ as “…a factory of sorts standing loftily on legs, as more of an echo chamber for sound and memories,
whilst it’s hexagonal steel gramophone horn protrudes outward emitting French sounds.”
Music has the ability to paint pictures, to stir emotion, to energize and to touch our soul in the same way as visual art.
No matter what your musical tastes might be or your visual preferences, this exhibition is for those who want to feel the
connection between what we hear and what we see. It will excite, engage and draw you closer to both mediums.
Backspace Gallery is an initiative of the City of Ballarat Arts and Culture Unit, dedicated to supporting local and regional artists by exhibiting quality
contemporary visual art, design and craft.
Artlands 2018
First line up of speakers have been announced for the Artlands 2018 Conference in Bendigo in October. Drawing from the
Artlands framework of Land | Creative Risk, their presentations contest the social, cultural and political constructs of artmaking,
challenge the notion of where art can live (way beyond major institutions in capital cities) and present new ideas
about what regional arts practice can be.
Sue Jane Taylor (Scotland) was born and brought up on the Black Isle, in the Highlands of Scotland, where her ancestors
have lived for centuries. She is well known as a contemporary visual documenter and interpreter of technology, engineering
and the UK offshore energy sector.
The opening keynote will be led by Trent Nelson, Chairperson for the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation
(DDWCAC) and Rodney Carter, the Chief Executive Officer of the Dja Dja Wurrung Group.
Trent and Rodney are proud Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta men from Central and Northern Victoria. They both live on
their ancestral lands in Bendigo.
From a haulage firm to a theatre and from an ex-miner to an artist, Creative People and Places is a UK based national arts
and social change program that brings together an extraordinary range of people and locations.
The Creative People and Places team will join us at Artlands Victoria presenting a challenge to the notion of where the arts
can live and how high level creativity can change communities.
Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more announcements.
MEGAN EVANS:
PARLOUR
Wed 23 May to Sun 18 Aug
The Lindsay Family Parlour has been a permanent feature of the
Gallery since 1967, when it was created to house objects and furniture
from the Creswick home of the Lindsay family of artists. Artist Megan
Evans will take over this classic Victorian space, inserting her family
portraits and her dismembered furniture into the, replacing much of
the Lindsay family memorabilia with her own.
Parlour follows Evans’s successful exhibition with Peter Waples Crowe
Squatters and Savages, which was presented in Ballarat and Benalla
in 2017. Much of Evans’s current practice involves combining original
19th century heritage objects including photographs, furniture and
decorative arts with craft processes such as beading and needlepoint.
The processes employed in this work, symbolic of both personal
and universal histories, are combined to unsettle traditional
understandings of ownership, memory and identity. By placing them
in a classic Victorian environment the work can be seen in context,
unstitching our understanding of a ‘civilised’ past.
Evans will present an Artist Talk on Saturday 2 June at 2pm.
Parlour is not intended as a reflection or comment on members of the
Lindsay family, their personal histories or artistic practice, but takes
advantage of the installation of a typical nineteenth parlour in a gallery
context.
Sat 12 May to Sun 26 Aug
‘Wow!’ And ‘Look at that!’ - Excited statements that express the
joy that rings out when artists Anne Chibnall and Tim Sedgwick are
making art with mentors Sarah Lloyd and Geoff Bonney in art HALL
Learmonth.
Although sharing keen interest in each other’s work, their practice is
separate. Tim makes wonderful found-object sculpted creatures and
Anne creates bountiful and colourful paintings of flowers.
The two are longtime friends and colleagues, with large catalogues of
work behind them.
This exhibition of painting and sculpture promises to be a WOW!
RECENT ACQUISITIONS 2018
Sat 17 Feb to Sun 2 Sep
Visit the Gallery to see works which have come into the collection
in the past two years which have, by and large, not been put out on
public display before. The Gallery has a wide collecting brief, but its
main focus is on paintings, works on paper and sculpture.
Many of these works are gifts, while others have been purchased with
funds left by bequest to the Gallery.
Over the duration of this exhibition, parts of the display will be
refreshed with new works, so plan a repeat visit if you wish to
see more of what the Gallery has been collecting. Other recent
acquisitions can be seen on display in the galleries upstairs.
An Art Gallery of Ballarat exhibition
Sat 23 Jun to Sun 9 Sep
In the mid-nineteenth century, France was the acknowledged centre of the art
world, as realist styles of painting were challenged by Impressionism. With
the advent of photography many artists worked to imitate nature, finding new
ways of to celebrate light and colour as spontaneous ‘impressions’.
This exhibition of treasures from the Musee de la Chartreuse, the regional
gallery for Douai in northern France, traces these developments. It ranges
from the idealised classical imagery of the late eighteenth century, romantic
seascapes and tranquil landscapes depicting the mills and canals of northern
France, through to paintings which celebrate the effects of pure light and
colour, and works which explore the lives of ordinary people, rarely seen in
earlier painting.
Renovations to the Chartreuse building have created a unique opportunity for
Australian audiences to see sixty nineteenth and twentieth-century gems from
this outstanding French gallery, alongside key paintings by Australian artists
working in France and discovering the same traditions, and works by French
artists from Australian collections.
Special guided tours will be available every Saturday and Sunday during the
run of the exhibition and for group visits by arrangement.
AUGUST 10 - SEPTEMBER 7
GaraParty is one of the projects under my
street art handle, Garapata, which I started as
a way of
bringing art to a different audience beyond
the white cube.
Garapata is the Tagalog word for tick,
parasites that infest a hapless host - from
our beloved dog and ultimately, our
house, climbing on walls and furniture.
The idea of infestation and host, as well
the tick’s aggressive character shaped
the concept behind this project, with
Garapata drawn using austere imagery
and bold outlines, meant to be set
against a dense and cluttered surface.
DAVID MELLOWS
June 9 - August 19
Having this opportunity to hang in a large
room with a vast wall is perfect to bring out
some of the large works by David Mellows
of the past decade. Local sourced images
are alongside those of travels, interstate and
international.
The painting technique remains from that
evolved after attaining a Diploma in Art &
Design, Printmaking Major, at Midland TAFE
in WA. That was stabilized through being able
to hang in commercial galleries in Melbourne
after moving to Victoria in 2000. The CV of
regional art prizes was further enhanced
and good sales meant the product spread
about Melbourne, Victoria, interstate and
overseas. The scale of work and sales was
complete with small to the panoramic and
multi-panelled works the like included in this
showing.
Themes also evolved through the decade
of success in Melbourne and that is well
represented here also. Most are from what
is seen with the enhancement or diminution
of the artists’ licence. The crowdscenes are
purely invention even though many have
claimed knowledge of some characters. In
this is the example most appreciated by the
artist. When the viewers tell their own story as
told in the painting.
David Mellows now lives in Creswick and
though winters can be cool, the colours of the
seasons change are enjoyed.
Garaparty @ Ballarista - Opening Friday August 10, 6pm
GaraParty is one of the projects under my street art handle, Garapata, which I started as a way of
bringing art to a different audience beyond the white cube.
Garapata is the Tagalog word for tick, parasites that infest a hapless host - from our beloved dog
and ultimately, our house, climbing on walls and furniture. The idea of infestation and host, as well
the tick’s aggressive character shaped the concept behind this project, with Garapata drawn using
austere imagery and bold outlines, meant to be set against a dense and cluttered surface. Through
its striking simplicity, the creature has evolved into various iterations while remaining familiar.
Since its birth in 2008, Garapata has infested and occupied both local as well as foreign urban
landscapes, initially appearing as murals and stickers before I expanded its reach with forays into
fashion, furniture and wallpaper design.
The stickers fulfill my desire to engage the audience as active participants who mark and document
Garapata’s place in society by placing stickers wherever they please and taking photos, which
are tagged or sent to me. The GaraParty was born out of that desire with the notion of parasitic
infestation expanded in the form of a fantasy: Guests assume the role of Garapata, set free and
welcomed by a willing host - the venue.
The message remains despite the fun atmosphere. GaraParty is a commentary: An escape from the
dire circumstances of reality, such as dirty politics, poverty, loneliness, discrimination, etc. It is also
an idyllic moment where, in contrast to reality, parasites - or metaphorically, humans on the margins
of society - stand shoulder-to-shoulder with people from all walks of life.
After its initial run in New York, the GaraParty has spread in various venues in Manila and most
recently, Taitung (Taiwan). I would like to continue its infestation in Australia as well. The event will
allow an invasion of the venue, as well as the hearts and minds of the guests through animation
videos, installations and the staging of Garapata balloons.
Italy, 2013, 108 min. Dir: Francesco Munzi
Italian Crime Thriller
Based on true events, Black Souls (2013) is a gripping story of a Calabrian
mafia dynasty and one manís chilling struggle to break free of a chequered
past. Luciano (Fabrizio Ferracane), the eldest of the Carbone brothers,
turns his back on his familyís drug operations and seeks to take his 20 year
old son Leo (Guiseppe Fumo) back to his ancestral home. Leo however
maintains his familial connections which ultimately leads to a feud that
threatens to explode. The film confronts the age-old morality tale about
challenging the cycle of violence and crime that plagues Calabrian mafia
culture. Winner of 9 Italian Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best
Director and Best Screenplay, this is a gripping thriller akin to Matteo
Garroneís 2008 film Gomorrah.
Sweet Mona’s Choir, based in Ballarat, Australia, is one of Victoria’s
leading, and longest running, gospel and world music choirs.
The choir was born organically in mid-nineties, when an enterprising
teacher used choral singing as an innovative way to teach voice skills in
a performing arts course. Sweet Mona’s has evolved over time, with the
complexity and variety of arrangements increasing as the choir reached a
professional standard that surpassed its original purpose.
Sweet Mona’s Choir focuses on a Capella and rhythm and performs a
broad range of contemporary, world and gospel music, including music
from the Staple Singers and the Golden Gate Quartet. Expertly directed
by multi-instrumentalist, renowned percussionist and vocalist Stella Savy
(Los Locos, Ballarat Ska Union), their sound ranges from a rich, deep
resonance to a lively, energetic tone, to haunting melodies that stay with
you long after the performance is over. Sweet Mona’s Choir are also
famous for their world-class arrangements, created by Barry Deenick
(Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Bustamento), Stella Savy and more. The
choir has also been privileged to work with some of the best musicians
on the Australian and international music scene, including Venetta Fields,
Mal Webb, Tony Backhouse, Hugh Masekela, Valanga Khoza, Andrea
Khoza and Vika & Linda Bull. Sweet Monaís Choir has performed at
a huge range of venues including music festivals from Apollo Bay to
Brunswick, from churches, weddings and community events to Federation
Square in the heart of Melbourne.
Comprising 30-40 singers, from a diverse range of backgrounds and
ages, countless people from the community have enjoyed, and benefited
from, performing with the choir over the past 20 odd years. Each member
offers something different to the choir, keeping Sweet Mona’s Choir a
colourful and lively human music machine!
AUDITION
Want to audition? Read on
Places in the choir are very limited. When we audition, we are looking for
a combination of factors- the ability to hold and match pitches, blending
and balancing your voice with others, the ability to clap and step in time
and the ability to be a proactive member of a group.
Please note: Rehearsal is held Tuesday nights (in Ballarat) 7-9pm during
school terms and is mandatory. Choir members are expected to be
available for gigs throughout the year.
*Don’t be alarmed if you don’t hear from us for a long time, we usually
only hold auditions once a year!
We will email you when we are holding auditions. Your details will be held
safely in our database!
MINI MONA’S CHOIR
The Mini Mona’s are a community children’s choir who perform a Capella
and accompanied contemporary, world and gospel music. Singing these
styles of music opens avenues of understanding and appreciation of other
culture’s musical styles, languages, attitudes and perspectives. Children
of any age and ability are welcomed and given the opportunity to sing,
create and perform!
Ballarat’s longest-running community choir, BCS has a focus on
classical work with regular explorations of more contemporary works.
Founded over one hundred years ago, BCS maintains a friendly
community feel and a high standard of singing. We are a small choir with
a big sound, a collective of people who are passionately committed to
singing great music, and doing it well. With the support of our talented
Musical Director, Helen Duggan, we are known for our beautiful renditions
of the classics - from Mozart to Beethoven and beyond - and our
exploration of the lighter side of music. Please join us on our vibrant
musical journey, as an audience member, a supporter or a chorister.
WHAT IS BALLARAT EVOLVE?
Ballarat Evolve is a trial program supported by the Ballarat Arts Foundation. This program is investigating the sustainability of
linking private businesses with micro-creative enterprises and artists, and permitting access to empty retail spaces throughout the
regional city’s central business district - focusing on fast tracking the city’s evolution.
WHAT IS THE REASON FOR BALLARAT EVOLVE?
Taking learnings from the hugely successful Renew Newcastle and Renew Australia initiatives, and relying upon the advice and
guidance of Arts Law Centre of Australia, Ballarat Evolve was borne out of genuine interest from local traders. Interested groups
started to notice the changing profile of the inner city streets, and a private initiative was undertaken. Volunteers logged empty
retail environments in a selected area of the CBD, noting those buildings highlighted with a ‘For Lease’, ‘For Sale’ and those which
were clearly empty. This was matched with attitudinal research of 220 individuals living, using and working in the heart of the city.
“62% of people believe there are fewer people shopping in the heart of Ballarat compared to a year ago.”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
“87% of those who live and work in Ballarat believe that there are many empty shops in the heart of the city.”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
WHY IS THE BALLARAT ARTS FOUNDATION INVOLVED?
The Ballarat Arts Foundation was approached with the concept to support a trial, investigating the feasibility of placing creative arts
practitioners and small businesses into identified empty retail environments. Ballarat Arts Foundation, as the city’s primary grantmaker
to the creative and arts community, has agreed to support the project’s trial till the end of December 2018. The Ballarat
Arts Foundation will assess applicants, and coordinate the profiling matching of applicants to suitable locations in conjunction with
the landlords and their representative agents. It is hoped that following the review period, the program will be established as an
ongoing concern.
WHO ELSE IS INVOLVED?
Ballarat Evolve is supported by a range of different private bodies, including real estate agents Colliers International and legal
teams offering their services pro-bono.
“56% of respondents disagree that the centre of Ballarat is vibrant and lively.””
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
“84% of people in Ballarat believe that empty retail shops should be made available to micro-businesses and enterprises.
”
— Ballarat Public Use Survey, Feb 2018
APPLYING TO BE A PART OF THE BALLARAT EVOLVE TRIAL
FOR ARTISTS
We are currently seeking creative industries, artists and makers to put themselves forward for consideration. The trial will be small
and tightly managed, so we would encourage you not to be disappointed should you not be successful on this occasion. Please
submit your Expression of Interest, and we will coordinate interviews and appointments with those who are successful.
www.ballaratartsfoundation.org.au/evolve-ballarat/
FOR LANDLORDS
We are seeking submissions from landlords with properties in the Ballarat Central region that have proven difficult to lease. We
seek the support of property owners who have vacant buildings to make them available for this project trial, adding them to our
existing list of properties under consideration.
