JAZZ IN THE PINES
TIPS TO ACT LIKE A LOCAL
Driving to the festival can take an hour
from the Desert floor so plan accordingly!
With doors opening at 10 am and the show
starting at 10:30, you’ll want to give yourself
time to park and settle in.
Drive defensively around town, since not
every other driver will be cautious. Make
sure you a have a legal, designated driver
if you plan to buy alcohol on the festival
grounds.
Note: There is no parking on the Idyllwild
Arts Campus, so note the pick-up points
on the map for transportation to and from
the main gate. Free shuttle locations are
marked as a circle with a star inside it.
Children under 18 are admitted free when
accompanied by a paying adult. Smoking
is allowed only in designated smoking
areas. There is no smoking in and around
the stages. This is strictly enforced, Please
be courteous with sun umbrellas and large
hats. nothing is more annoying to be asked
to take off that silly hat.
Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable.
Come prepared for rain and bring
a sweater or light jacket as evenings can
be cool. Comfortable and sturdy walking
shoes are a must as forest pathways can be
uneven. No Photography of performances
PLEASE! Chairs with backs no higher than
32 inches are allowed in the Amphitheater/Main
stage area. Cell reception is bad
in the mountains and phones should be
turned off during performances.
happy!
Some highlights to enjoy Saturday.
11:00 -- 12:15
Pete Escovedo Orchestra
Peter Escovedo is a Mexican-American
percussionist. Escovedo combines Latin and
salsa rhythms with his jazz. With his two
brothers, Pete formed the Escovedo Brothers
Latin Jazz Sextet, before Carlos Santana hired
Pete and Coke Escovedo for his group. He
led the 14–24 piece Latin big band Azteca.
Escovedo participated in the San Francisco
music scene for several decades. He is the
father of famed percussionist Sheila E.
This year, one of the new groups at the festival
popular jazz musician. He has several awards
from the Berklee Jazz Workshop, a popular
An accomplished guitarist, composer, and
arranger, Idyllwild Arts Academy alum Graham
Dechter plays with the kind of swinging
authority and seasoned maturity that belies
his youth. The Los Angeles native shows a
deep reverence for the jazz guitar tradition
in his warm-toned renditions of ballads,
bossas, bebop, and blues. A formidable soloist
and consummate accompanist, he imbues
standards with rare enthusiasm and an inherent
bluesiness while carving his own path with
affecting original compositions.
THE ART OF DANCE: THE
CHOREOGRAPHY OF POLITICAL
GESTURES!
AdamsArtExpose’
and how he used body language as an
extension of his political message.
AdamsArtExpose’ ART
Dance has been recognized as an art of
human expression throughout the ages.
Choreography is the art of designing
movements that make up dance
sequences. In the LGBTQ community
dance has always been an integral aspect
of communication, expression, and
enjoyment. It may be in the form of
watching and moving along with go-go
dancers at a bar, or serenely watching
a ballet performance in a theater, an or
in actually dancing with a partner in
any venue of enjoying integrated body
movement.
Recently a visual artist who works
primarily in video and performing arts,
Liz Magic Laser, She has studied the
(performance), movement in the way
politicians get their message across
behind a speakers podium. Liz Magic
Laser watches these political speeches
with the sound turned off. This caused
the viewer to focus on the movement
and gestures primarily in the hands and
arms of the political speaker. She has
studied the outline of how to influence
with gestures as put forth by the French
theoretician Francois Delsarte in the
early 1800's. Her fascination began with
watching the speeches of Barack Obama
To do this analysis she set up a still
camera with automatic sequence shots
about one second in space filming
videos of Obama's and George H. W.
Bushes speeches. She also along with
a male dance performer, created a
choreographed interpretation of the
speeches, titled, "Talk to the Hand".
Liz Magic Laser's statement regarding
the performance explains her concerns
regarding the message of politics. "In
today's fractured political sphere...we are
living in strange days where performance
itself has become the dominant
instrument of power. The basic analysis
of these two political performers was
stated by the narrator of the show,
George H. W. Bush seemed to be making
rapid hand movements to the side as
a snake striking or someone stabbing.
Obama's gestures were interpreted as
more using his fingers to pluck delicate
flowers as he was discussing the perils
of climate change if intervention is not
attempted to change it. You can see the
whole performance with the the video
interpretations and choreographed
reeiactments of political gestures at,
Fabeyonce “Shady Lady”
In these days of our lives, we come across many
different types of personalities. Some we love
and some we just can live without. I know in
my 5 years of doing drag, I came across many
different cups of T. Some loved me, and some
just couldn't have it with me, not sure why that
was.
I know when I came out I was young and
pushed myself to grow which got me booked in
places with other entertainers that I eventually
became friends with. And with that head
start, I started to work even harder and push
my skills and learn new music to lip sync too.
When I started to host my first show, it was lots
of fun and I kept it like that. I got offered to
host another and then another, so I did it.
With that I was so proud of myself. I told
myself “Girl, you are the youngest host here in
Palm springs”, and I was the happiest person in
the world but... Shadowing me was the Shady
Ladies, throwing shade from every corner,
making up lies, posting negative stuff about me
and my shows and it kept on for a while.
has to say. If you love what your doing, do it
and do it so well, that people have reasons to
talk, so they can say “Shit, this girl works her
ass off ” and after time, all the Shady people
will stop and kiss your ass and be your friend.
That's when it's your decision to be an adult
and forgive or be the bigger adult and forget.
I choose neither (lol). I remember everything
throughout my journey and I take it very
personal. I look at everyone who has helped
me along the way, from making a costume, to
giving me a piece of jewelry, to even lending
me a wig. It's the small things like that that
really matter. I never have much to say about
other entertainers, but I will compliment them
on what they do best and recognize it, so it
pushes them to be the best they can be.
I tell all my girls there's lots of shade out there
and we can't shed light to most of it, but if
you carry yourself well and around others,
they have no reason to talk, unless they’re
jealous, insecure, or just threatened. Walk with
confidence, keep your head up, and be the
freakin best you can be. Don't let anyone stop
you or push the breaks on you. Go for it, make
it work. I wish at the time I had someone who
could have told me that instead of learning by
myself. Thank y'all for listening to me rant.
Until next time. Love you all.
I never knew what I did wrong. What I did
know is that I worked my ass off and wasn't
afraid to be honest and I booked different girls
from all around, so that they have a spotlight
and a chance, like I was given, and I promoted
them and my shows like no other. I'd make
Love,
flyers and go to the malls in drag, hand them
Fabeyonce
out, and take pictures just to get my name out
McMichaels
there, something most queens wouldn't do. I
remember asking myself many times, “What
did I do wrong to make all this happen? Why Fabeyonce
is this happening to me? How can I make it
stop?”. There was no way of doing any of that.
LOVE YOURSELF RESPECT AND WORRY
books and owns two restaurants in Los
Angeles, Maude in Beverly Hills and
Gwen in Hollywood.
Modesty aside, how would you describe
yourself?
I take life and the world pretty lightly
and try to see the funny side of things.
At least that’s who I hope I am. And for
as busy as I get, I’m a family man – love
my kids, love my wife.
You grew up in Australia where you
started your career before going to
London, a city not famous for its food.
Can you dispel that myth?
London is a fabulous food town. It’s a
melting pot of cultures plus plenty of
Michelin-starred restaurants. I just don’t
buy it when people say London has
poor food. The city’s got cred.
Aside from being a renowned and celebrated
chef, your prolific career includes
television shows, publishing books and
countless appearances. Does the celebrity
factor ever become too much?
I wouldn’t say it’s too much because I
enjoy it. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing
it. It’s nice doing television in Los
Angeles because we’ll shoot during the
day and then when we wrap, I can head
to the restaurants in time for service. I
really do love the energy of the kitchen,
which is why it was important to me to
open my own restaurants.
For those of us unfamiliar, please name
a few authentically Australian dishes.
Beef and pork roasts are big for us
Aussies. And the pavlova is a classic
Australian dessert. I also love a good
sausage roll.
How is the Los Angeles palette different
than other major cities?
Los Angeles has a sophisticated palate
because there is so much food here. I
am happy to see the city finally being
recognized as a culinary destination
and coming into its own. It’s cool to be
able to head to K-Town and eat incredible
Korean food then pop over to a food
truck for a few tacos. It’s just going to
keep getting better.
Aside from your restaurant Maude in
Beverly Hills, do you have a favorite
eatery in LA?
I’m a big fan of Asian food, probably
because I don’t really make it for myself.
Luv2Eat is a great Thai place just down
the block from my restaurant, Gwen, in
Hollywood. Some of those dishes are
HOT, I mean, fiery hot. But it’s my new
favorite.
What’s new on your play list?
It’s constantly changing. I listen to
Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW
when I’m in the car headed to work. I’m
always finding new music there.
What’s your favorite charity or cause?
I’ve been working with Chrysalis since
we opened Maude in 2014. It’s an L.A.-
based nonprofit working to give low-income
and homeless individuals second
chances through employment.
What exciting project do you have coming
up?
We’re revamping the Maude concept so
we’ll close the restaurant for a couple of
weeks at the beginning of the New Year
and reopen with quarterly menus based
on wine regions around the world.
Tell me a secret-a good one.
Then it wouldn’t be a secret.
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Let’s begin with good news. Yes, there is
some!
Unemployment figures are out, and
Cathedral City’s unemployment rate has
dropped to 2.7!!! 3% is considered full
employment. Thank you, Cathedral City
Auto Center! Thank you, Cathedral City
Cannabis businesses! And thank you to the
hospitality business sector.
Cathedral City IS the plane to do business!
Now back to Washington and the fantasy
land there. Week 2 of the Paul Manafort
trial begins. His accountant has already
testified she lied to IRS officials at
Manorfort’s each! Not to mention the
specialty jackets and shoes. This week
there will be more testimony about lying to
federal investigators and hiding money.
President Trump, FINALLY, admitted that
the meeting with the Russians was about
getting dirt on Hillary and NOT about
adoptions. He practically threw his son
under the bus, saying that he was in legal
jeopardy and while Don Jr. didn’t think he
was doing anything wrong, it may not look
that way to others.
and Secretary Clinton for all the hacking
info that has been discovered. He then went
after Congresswoman Maxine Waters, CNN
anchor Don Lemon and new Los Angeles
Laker LeBron James. Not surprisingly, all
three are African Americans.
He continues to show he a racist and
homophobe. And we thought George W.
Bush was bad.
Reports continue that the President has
become more and more erratic. Screaming,
lashing out, etc. and now that his wife is
speaking out more and more in opposition
to his policies, it seems like it is only going
to get worse.
Trump has now been told to not focus
on campaigning for the House of
Representatives and concentrate on the
Senate, so he can be protected from
impeachment. Walls are closing in. Finally.
Stay active. Register and then VOTE!
Always RESIST!
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman
in Cathedral City. Greg was the first openly
gay elected city council members In
The President, again, did this past week
what he always does when he feels his back Riverside County. He has served on the
is against the wall. He attacks people that boards of the National League of Cities
and the League of California Cities and as
have no connection to him or his problem.
President of the Southern CA Association
First, he blamed former President Obama of Governments.
