TO THE EDITOR
Reluctantly, I feel compelled
to reply to Neil Munro’s latest
letter regarding the rejection of
the Ramsay Centre’s Bachelor
of Western Civilization course
by the ANU (Herald, July 24).
I say reluctantly, because I have
no wish to engage in a protracted
debate in our local paper, nor do
I intend to.
This will make two letters that
we have each written on the matter.
So having had my say, I shall
not be writing any more on this
topic. For the sake of other long
suffering readers, may I suggest
Neil adopt the same course of
action.
Readers may recall Neil’s letter
took exception to a number
of points I had made concerning
his earlier attack on the ANU.
The whole thrust of my reply
was that the ANU was not rejecting
the concept of the course
but the stifling control the centre
demanded over its content
and delivery. I’m sure the ANU
would welcome a course seeking
to provide knowledge and
understanding of Western Civilization.
But not (in Neil’s words)
“promoting an appreciation” of
Sixty-five years ago, the armistice
ending three years of fighting on the
Korean peninsula was signed.
Within days of the invasion of
South Korea by North Korean forces
on June 25, 1950, the United Nations
Security Council had the support of
21 member nations to defend South
Korea, including Australia. The
Royal Australian Navy and the Royal
it by a micro-managed control
of its content and delivery by
an external body. I was simply
defending the University’s decision
not to risk offering a course
that would compromise its autonomy
and could easily become
an exercise in propaganda. In
his latest letter, Neil has not addressed
this central issue.
Instead, he has mounted a
spirited defence of the Ramsay
course and launched an equally
vigorous attack on what he
perceives as “Leftist” forces at
work in universities.
With respect to the content of
the Ramsay course, I would say
this. As a citizen of a Western
democracy I fully appreciate the
enormous benefits of Western
civilization. I live in an affluent,
well regulated, and technologically
advanced and mostly fair
society with a rich culture heritage.
Clearly ANU acknowledges
this also. Its history majors offer
six Bachelor degrees. Four of
them involve significant aspects
of Western history and culture,
most prominently, the Bachelor
of European Studies. So there is
no left wing suppression of the
Australian Air Force committed
forces to the United Nations effort
in Korea within a week of the war’s
beginning, Australian ground troops
arrived in September 1950. The
armistice was signed on July 27,
1953, the last troops did not leave
Korean shores until August 1957.
Approximately 18,000 Australian
service personnel served in Korea
White washed version of history
achievements of Western Civilization.
History has always been a
highly sensitive subject politically.
The danger I see with the
Ramsay Foundation’s course
stems from views expressed
by its Chairman, ex-PM John
Howard. In office he was critical
of what he termed “the Black
Arm Band” view of history. He
was alluding to what he saw as
overly negative accounts of Australian
history particularly in relation
to the treatment of Indigenous
Australians. I’m sure that,
like me, he was taught very little
at school about the impact of
European settlement on Aboriginal
people. Our history lessons
made no mention of the dispossession,
the introduced diseases,
the massacres, the poisonings,
the denial of citizenship, or the
denigration of Aboriginal culture.
To learn about these events
later was a shock. If these issues
are ignored by, or censored from,
a history course, then it becomes
a “white-washed” version of
history which undermines confidence
in our education system,
hence the ANU’s refusal
between 1950 and 1957, including
Army and Royal Australian Air Force
nurses. Australia suffered some 1500
casualties, including over 350 who
lost their lives, and 30 who were taken
prisoner.
More than 40 Australians are still
listed as missing in action.
The Korean War marked the
first collective UN military action
to accept external control which
could result in a deliberately incomplete
analysis of a topic.
Neil’s concern about radical
ideas being promoted by “Leftist
dominated” elements smacks
of some kind of conspiracy
theory. Courses which seek to
redress this imbalance certainly
do not go to the other extreme
of “showing only the negatives
of Western Civilisation” or constitute
an “attempt by the Left to
airbrush out any mention of British
or European influence on our
history.”
The Vice Chancellor of ANU
went to great lengths to explain
that universities are places
where students are exposed to
ideas and encouraged to debate
them. From that, new ideas are
generated.
As a result universities have
always been hotbeds of controversy
and disruption. There is
no better example of that than
when Martin Luther, a lecturer
at Wittenberg University, attacked
the Catholic Church over
corruption and doctrinal matters,
triggering the Protestant Reformation.
It was a classic case
65th anniversary of Korean armistice
and Australian sailors, soldiers and
airmen won international respect for
their courage, endurance and combat
skills. Sadly, looking back on the
Korean War, one Australian soldier
remarked that ‘most Australians of the
Korean War regard themselves as the
forgotten veterans of a forgotten war.’
In this, the final year of the Anzac
Centenary, it is my sincere hope these
of a university disturbing the
status quo by questioning longheld
beliefs. This is the basis
of human progress. Of course,
some of these new ideas will
be sheer nonsense, but free and
open debate will expose that. On
the other hand, many disruptive
ideas have changed the course of
history.
In science alone, think Darwin’s
Theory of Evolution.
Some of the democracies, universal
suffrage, publicly funded
education for all, the abolition of
slavery and social equality.
Neil admits that he has experienced
such challenges himself
over issues like the same sex
marriage legislation, climate
change and the Republican
movement.
Of course, he is completely
entitled to voice his views in
opposing these “progressive”
ideas. Only time will tell whether
these are “ideas whose time
has come” and whether he is on
the wrong side of history.
Unfortunately, it is not just the
ideas that are seen as dangerous.
Those who promulgate them
are also demonised. Socrates
words are no longer true and that the
men and women who bravely served
in the Korean War know that Australia
honours their service. Each year on
July 27 we observe Korean Veterans’
Day and I encourage everyone to
honour the service and sacrifice of
those who served in the Korean War.
I will also attend the commemorative
service for the 65th
for “refusing to recognise the
gods.”Martin Luther King was
jailed and then assassinated for
leading a movement demanding
the end of racial segregation in
the US.
Journalists all over the world
are imprisoned or executed for
reporting the truth. Just ask Peter
Greste.
A propos the accusation that I
have neglected to mention various
examples in Neil’s initial letter,
the answer is simple. Firstly
they are not directly connected
to the UNE’S decision. Secondly,
each of the controversial
matters are complex and would
require a long and detailed reply.
Space forbids.
So I would fully endorse
Neil’s condemnation of those
who “deny freedom of speech
to any opinions but their own”
(sic.)
A mind open to new ideas, a
willingness to engage in constructive
debate, and a focus on
the issues rather than on their
promoters are much better options.
Seeing Eye Dog appeal raises $3057
Thanks to the kindness and
generosity of the community who
contributed $3057 to The Petbarn
Foundation’s National Seeing Eye
Dogs Appeal, 14 special puppies
will receive training to provide assistance
to Aussies who are blind or
have low vision.
The Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal,
which launched across Petbarn
stores in May and ran for six weeks,
raised a massive $716,795 across all
Petbarn, City Farmers and Greencross
Vets Clinics nationally.
All funds raised will go directly
towards covering the costs of breeding,
caring for puppies, training and
matching Seeing Eye Dogs to as
many people as possible.
David Speyer, General Manager
of Seeing Eye Dogs, said he was
absolutely thrilled with the result of
this year’s fundraising campaign.
“I would like to express my sincere
thanks to The Petbarn Foundation,
City Farmers, Greencross
Vets Clinics, ROYAL CANIN and
the local Highfields community for
their generosity in supporting the
Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal this year.
“Our mission to help people who
are blind or have low vision to live
the life they choose would not have
been possible without your support,”
Mr Speyer said.
It costs a minimum of $50,000
and takes up to two years to train
one Seeing Eye Dog. Training begins
when the dog is still a puppy
and involves teaching them basic
socialisation skills and obedience.
On maturity, each dog takes part
in up to six months of intensive
training with a specialised instructor.
“It takes a lot of expertise, time,
love, patience, and funding to raise
these special dogs that will become
the gift of independence for 14 Australians
who are blind or have very
low vision,”h e said.
Chief Operating Officer Tanya
Houghton said “I would like to extend
my gratitude to everyone who
donated to the appeal this year.
Seeing Eye Dogs do more than
just allow Australians who are blind
or have low vision to retain their independence
and mobility.
They alleviate the effects of
social isolation and contribute to
an all-round better quality of life,
which is why we are proud to be involved
in helping train 14 puppies,”
Tanya says.
“A special thanks to ROYAL
CANIN for their support over the
past 10 years by providing precise
and individualised nutrition to help
ensure the Seeing Eye Dogs and
puppies-in-training are fit for their
important work.
This year, they kick-started the
campaign by donating $50,000 to
the appeal.”
Range crossing on track despite concerns
The Toowoomba bypass is about 85 percent complete
in many sections and should be open to traffic early
next year.
But for some, a concern that emerged in the early
design stages will not have been changed when the
public gets to drive on it.
Where the new road crosses the Warrego Highway
at Charlton, traffic, including heavily laden trucks
travelling west and wanting to access the Warrego to
proceed to Oakey, Dalby, Roma and Charleville, will
have to exit the second range crossing to a T-junction
with traffic lights, and then turn right into the Warrego
Highway.
Mayor Paul Antonio and the Toowoomba Regional
Council expressed their concerns at the time and had
discussions with the State Government’s Department of
Transport and Main Roads, the planning authority.
But the T-junction will be included in the project.
At an inspection of the progress of the project at
Charlton last week, the CEO of Nexus, John Hagan,
said they had incorporated enough space into the design
of the intersection so that a clover-leaf system ould be
built when traffic flow warrants a change.
Mr Hagan acknowledged that the traffic flow on
the Warrego Highway is greater than that on the Gore
Highway to Pittsworth, Goondiwindi and Melbourne.
But Member for Groom John McVeigh said it is
expected in the future that there will be more growth in
traffic flow on the Gore Highway.
Mr McVeigh said there was a time when the second
range crossing was to be just two lanes, and now from
Helidon to Charlton the road is four lanes, with two
lanes from Charlton to the Gore Highway.
Mr McVeigh and Member for Condamine Pat
Weir inspected a truck stop adjacent to the Charlton
intersection. They said the asphalt sealed area would
provide truck drivers with a safe stopping zone to have
a break, uncouple and couple trailers, change loads, and
park their trailers.
Mr Hagan said much of the roadway was completed
with work on intersections, exits and entry points to be
completed.
He said the road surface from the Gore Highway
to Mort Street was asphalt sealed, as was most of
the eastern section from the Warrego Highway near
Helidon to east of the viaduct. Work on the road east of
the viaduct where a geological fault was discovered is
progressing, with 2km of the work affected.
Mr Hagan said about one million cubic metres of
earth have been removed from a depth of nearly 60
metres, and the road would now be constructed on a
solid foundation.
Stage two of Toowoomba’s City
with Toowoomba Regional Council
In the 2017/18 financial year, TRC
Community Development Facilities
Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the
Scam sign on Kingsthorpe
building site
A sign on a construction site at
Kingsthorpe has been described as a
professional scam.
Earthworks have started on the
construction of a supermarket and
five speciality stores. Early last
week a sign appeared on the security
fencing indicating that what was
being constructed was a Woolworths
store and a Dan Murphy bottle shop.
Geoff Bonney, spokesman for the
developers, said he was on site on
the Friday before the incident and
said the sign was not there.
But two days later on Sunday he
received a text telling him of the
Woolworths sign. It seems to have
been removed the next day.
Mr Bonney said the sign was not
legitimate.
council had already upgraded about
80 per cent of the cameras from
analogue to digital.
“Upgrading and improving our
system is a continual focus for
Council as we continue on our path
towards making Toowoomba one of
He said it appeared it was not
just a backyard prank, because
Woolworths and Dan Murphy’s
graphics were used so whoever did
it had access to these graphics.
Mr Bonney said it was a strange
incident. His family company has
been involved in 16 to 18 similar
developments around Queensland,
and never experienced such a thing.
He said what was being
constructed was a supermarket (not
Woolworths) and five speciality
stores.
The supermarket would be a
full line store with all departments
including meat, fruit, deli, and
groceries. He expected the complex
would open for business in the first
week of December.
one of the longest running CCTV
programs in Queensland after the first
camera became operational in January
1995.
“The footage has been not only
helpful in assisting the QPS with
crime matters but was vital during
the 2011 flood as it provided realtime
footage of what was happening
around the city.
“The footage captured has proved
to be incredibly helpful and we are
now converting all our cameras to
digital so we are able to gain a much
clearer and more focused image.
“We also work closely with our
licensed venues, having acted upon
more than 400 incidents that have
taken place over the past three months
to help improve safety of the CBD.
Earlier this year we gained
international accreditation as an
upgrading our network to become
fully digital is another step on that
journey.”
Toowoomba Hospice has already
month’s race Day to be held in the
Clive Berghofer Atrium at Clifford
Park, Toowoomba.
Chairman of the Toowoomba
Hospice Association Mr Graham
Barron said he was happy with the
response so far to their 15th annual
race day on Saturday, September 8.
“We hope to have 300 attending
on the day to make it a successful
event. This year we have made a
couple of changes in the hope to
entice everyone to dig a bit deeper to
help us raise $20,000,” he said.
The race day is one of the
hospice’s major fundraising/social
events, with the money raised to
assist the daily operations of this
important community facility
providing free palliative care for
adults.
Mr Barron said tickets were
$85 and could be bought from
the Hospice in O’Quinn Street,
business hours on 4659 8500 or
email events@toowoombahospice.
arrival, canapes and a two-course
meal.
There will be prizes for best hat,
“We have been donated a Baby-Q
BBQs (thank you.)
So if there are any other businesses
who would like to donate a prize(s)
they can contact our administration
and fundraising manger Mark at the
Hospice,” Mr Barron said.
Mr. Barron reassured all those
who donate money to the hospice
that it stays in our region.
“The Hospice is a local charity
and I am very proud to say that the
money raised locally stays locally to
support local businesses, companies,
families and individuals.”
WARWICK JUMPERS and JAZZ FESTIVAL
Downs textile group explores
universe
On display at the Warwick Art Gallery
during the Jumpers and Jazz in July festival
was an exhibition of works by the Darling
Downs Textile Art Group.
The collaborative works, titled Galaxy
Morphed, created exclusively for the festival,
explored the universe, its colours, changing
patterns, magnetic enigma and creative appeal
through the textile medium.
Group member Jan Scudmore, Crows
Nest, says the group hopes that the exhibition
appeals to a broad audience.
“Humanity’s interest in the Universe is
profound and deep-rooted,” says Jan, “Our
exhibition is giving the viewer an experience
as if they were actually travelling through
space.” - Ann Lomas reporting.
CHARLTON NORTH DETENTION BASIN
Keeping Queenslanders safe during times of natural disaster - Minister
Toowoomba Regional Council
has completed the $4.64 million
Charlton North Detention Basin
which will act as a key stormwater
management and flood mitigation
project for the Toowoomba
Enterprise Hub.
Minister for Local Government,
Racing and Multicultural Affairs
Stirling Hinchliffe applauded the
council’s initiative to develop flood
resilience for this major industrial
hub through the construction of the
detention basin.
“The project has been jointly
funded by Council and the
Queensland and Australian
Governments through the Natural
Disaster Resilience Program.
“One of the objectives of this
program is to continually improve
Queensland’s disaster preparedness
response and recovery, Minister
Hinchliffe said.
“The Charlton North Detention
Basin project is a great example of
all levels of government working
together to keep Queenslanders safe
during times of natural disaster”.
Mayor Paul Antonio said the
completion of the Charlton North
Detention Basin was a major
milestone in the development of the
Toowoomba Enterprise Hub.
“Toowoomba Region is
becoming a key logistics hub and
the expansion of the TEH will drive
economic growth and support job
creation in our region,” Cr Antonio
said.
The Toowoomba Enterprise Hub
is a 1972 hectare industrial zone
13km west of Toowoomba. The
area is the largest zoned industrial
area in Queensland west of the Great
Dividing Range.
“The TEH has been identified in
the South East Queensland Regional
Plan as having the potential to
provide up to 12,000 jobs when fully
developed and increase Toowoomba
Region’s gross regional product by
$2.1billion.
Deputy Mayor and Chair of the
Infrastructure Committee Cr Carol
Taylor said “the detention basin
would act as an important flood
mitigation device for the northern
precinct of the TEH. It will mitigate
flows and in doing so protect
valuable residential and industrial
areas.
“The basin will also beautify the
area by adding open space to what
will predominantly be an industrial
development,” she said.
Bob Townshend, Bob the Bellman of Renown, the town crier for the Southern Downs
with the highly commended prizewinner Groovy Grannies, one of the dressed trees
that lined Warwick’s main street during the Jumpers and Jazz Festival. Groovy Grannies
was entered in the open artistic section.
The Toowoomba region welcomed Rhonda
Livingstone last week, a national education leader
from the Australian Children’s Education and
Care Quality Authority.
She has been travelling around Australia hosting
workshops and visiting childcare centres to
ensure their practices and facilities adhere to the
ideas of ACECQA.
Staff at Highfields Gardens Childcare were starstruck
by the arrival of Mrs Livingstone at their
centre, as they showed off their brand new up-todate
facilities and discussed the framework they
use to develop children from an early age.
Mrs Livingstone hosted a workshop at the
Toowoomba City Golf Club earlier in the day before
visiting Highfields Gardens. - Jack Waters
TreeChange
Our first spring in our new little place
was full of activity. We had weeding
to do, garden beds to lay out, seeds
to plant, soil to enrich, plus an array
of indoor chores too, to make the house work
better for us or to be more the way we wanted it
to look. Curtains to sew, rooms to paint, kitchen
cupboards to replace.
Our days were busy, and we were making
great progress. It was satisfying to see order
form out of disarray.
Garden beds were weeded, and plants planted.
Seeds were watered, and green shoots started to
unfurl their leaves in the newly mulched soil.
We had so much to do, and we were excited
to be able to get our hands into soil and do the
things we’d long thought about in our ‘one-day’
dreams.
Then I was lying in bed one night, unable to
sleep as I thought about all the things on the todo
list. Thoughts were going around in my head
and I was trying to remember that when we went
to the hardware store I needed to remember to
get this, and that, as well as one of those.
The list was in charge, it seemed, and I was
just its slave, its doer.
Where were the cups of tea on the verandah?
The lazy weekend mornings reading a book
and watching the sun rise high in the sky without
rushing into activity?
We bought this house with a promise to
ourselves to slow down, to think about what
matters, to enjoy the journey as much as the
end result.
Fast forward a few years, and this morning
we’ve been reading for the last few hours.
I cooked pancakes with bacon and pear, a
perfect wintery breakfast, and we settled back
into reading.
Finding balance
by Rachael Wallis
Later, we’ll go out into the garden and do
some of the chores on the list, and we’ll stop
when we get tired. We’ll set the fire and when
the afternoon light begins to change and the cool
air turns crisp, we’ll light the fire and Bruce will
start cooking dinner.
We’ll probably talk about something we’ve
come across during the day. A news story perhaps,
or an idea in a book, or maybe something
we noticed happening in the garden.
The buds are starting to appear on the fruit
trees and the hibiscus that died in the drought
of last summer has already decayed to the point
where I could simply pull it out of the still-dry
soil and haul it to the compost heap without
much effort.
These are not big things, but they mean something
to us.
This is what we were aiming for when we
made a tree-change to the country.
It took some time, but we learned to slow
down and enjoy it as we went along. This is the
sort of day we want to live. - Rachael Wallis.
Grand Old Crow with a grand old past
The Grand Old Crow, Crows Nest, is celebrating
120 years since the Gleeson brothers
opened it in 1908.
All those years later it has remained the
same, a place where you can come in, sit down
and strike up a chat with someone.
New manager Philip Snook, pictured, has
been there for two months now and is doing
everything he can to keep things the same for
the locals who have been going there for years.
He said it’s pretty much the same as every
small town pub he’s worked in and that’s what
he loves about it.
“I’ve been in hotels for 40 years and the patronage
is very similar wherever you go.
“I knew the owner and he came and saw me
out at my old pub and said there’s a good opportunity
here in Crows Nest and I came and had a
look at it and said, “Yeah why not?”
The hotel features a beer garden, wood fire
pizza oven, outdoor heating, and bistro food.
and sustainably.
Lamb is sourced from Warwick and
occasionally their own sheep, generally being of
the Dorper breed, known for being tender and
flavoursome. The sheep used are all grass-fed.
The shop employs local people - manager
Jason Andrews, apprentice Jayden Donovan,
senior butcher Les Whatnall, junior apprentice
Tyson Simpson and cleaner Brae Beer.
Peter says, “We are proud to be part of this
solid community and to that end, believe it is
our responsibility to give back to the community
wherever possible.
“Being local is what it is all about in regional
communities. We have to celebrate what we
have.”
settle well into my new family. Hey there people, I’m Jessie!
I’m a sweet and playful girl
Ideally, I would like to live as an
and lose you.
I absolutely love to play, but I
There is no need to worry don’t always have a good idea of
little lady knows exactly where I get excited and jump around
to take her business. If you think a lot, not really aware of my size,
I would make a great addition to so it’s probably best for me not
your family, I would really like to live with younger kids or cats.
to meet you.
I haven’t been socialised with
Hi my name is Daisy and I
am on the hunt for my new family!
Though I am a quiet little
lady, I›m very friendly and love
to make new friends. I can be
very affectionate when I want to
be so I would be best suited to an
older home where I can just lay
around and be lazy.
I am not a fan of other cats,
so I would need to be your
only feline in your family to
ensure that I am happy and can
other dogs a lot, so I would be
better suited as the only fouirlegged
companion you have.
I will also need my new owner
to have the time to teach me basic
manners and commands.
I would like to learn to play
fetch properly, and it would
be much better for my focus to
have high, solid fencing around
my yard so I don’t get distracted
by everything happening on
around me.
Combined with his portraiture
In 2015, Bruce decided it was
time to devote all of his time and
Approaching nesting
season keeps bird
observers busy
Members of the Toowoomba
Bird Observers and four guests
met up on July 28 to enjoy the
local birds of the Highfields area.
The group started at Rogers
Park Bushland Reserve, just near
the Highfields Library and then
went on to Charmaine Court
Bushland Reserve at Kleinton,
before finishing at Cooby Dam
for morning tea.
With both the reserves having
been saved so far from development,
they provide an array of
birds for all to enjoy.
From the start at Rogers Park,
there was a symphony of calls
as the birds were starting to get
their nests ready for the coming
breeding season.
An Australian Magpie was observed
building its spring nest at
the beginning of the walk.
Rainbow Lorikeets, Scalybreasted
Lorikeets, Australian
King Parrots and Galahs could
be seen coming and going from
tree hollows.
The Galahs, in particular,
were hard at work expanding
hollows and in one case tearing
into a trunk at the juncture with a
branch to create their nest.
Brown Cuckoo-Doves flew
over the group a couple of times
being chased at one stage by a
pair of Noisy Miners.
A pair of Eastern Whipbirds
were fossicking just off the path
but their unique call surprisingly
wasn’t heard during the walk.
This is a bit of a change for a
bird that is often heard but difficult
to spot at times.
Other birds seen included
the Little Corella, Spotted Pardalote,
Pied Currawong, Grey
Butcherbird, Pale-headed Rosella,
and Noisy Miner.
The group then moved onto
Charmaine Court Bushland Reserve,
a small gem of remnant
dry rainforest which is probably
representative of much of the
Highfields area prior to development
and home to many native
A number of smaller bird species
were seen flitting about. The
first bird was the Grey Fantail
chasing and catching the early
season Caper White butterflies.
A section on the eastern side
provided a concentration of
birds with Golden Whistler,
The group finished off at Cooby
were entertained by a pair of
HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - AUGUST 7, 2018 - 11

HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
Exton Stud moves from white pigs to black cattle
Miles Noller reporting
The Exton stud name, which
was once prominent in the Crows
Nest district, is continuing on
in the Haden area, but now for
Angus cattle rather than Large
White pigs.
The Exton name is now being
used by the Schmaling family
which has an Angus stud on a
number of properties near Haden.
Stud principal Tim Schmaling
said the Exton name was used by
his grandfather, the late Arnold
Kanowski who had a Large White
stud at Pechey for a few decades
until 1995.
Tim and his wife Vicki and
family members including father
Gary have run commercial
Angus cattle for some time, and
established a stud about six years
ago.
They maintain a small stud
with 40 stud cows and a major
aim is to sell bulls at a younger age
than the normal two years.
Tim said they sell bulls at eight
months to two years and can sell
them at a lower price than those
that are fed for an extra year or
so.
He said the extra feed that
bulls can receive for a sale does
not always contribute to the best
performance in the longer term.
Selling bulls at a younger age
was a practise in the USA and Tim
said that the extra time permitted
the young bull to grow into its new
environment, and to start its first
breeding season with fewer cows.
The stud uses AI and embryo
transplant in its breeding
program and aims to breed
cattle with docility, softness and
longevity that will perform in any
market.
“Our focus is on producing
young, easy doing bulls which will
adapt to any new environment,”
Tim said.
While studs sometimes talk
about producing perfection, Tim
said no one has ever bred the
perfect animal, and adapting
genetics takes time.
However, a good aim is to
produce consistently high quality
cattle.
The Schmalings have bred
Angus cattle commercially for a
long time.
Along with Angus, they have
tried Brafords, Limousins and
Santas, but have always come
back to Angus.
Their commercial progeny are
sold in Toowoomba as yearlings
and vealers.
Tim said that 80 per cent of
their commercial herd is now
Herd Book Registered, and the
best of the commercial cows are
sometimes used in stud work.
He said that while the dry
season was becoming more
difficult, their cattle business was
not yet in dire straits.
He said they still had good
dry grass on some of their cattle
country, and they had stocks of
barley straw and forage hay, and
they did have a small area of oats,
which has since been grazed.
Kanowski who operated the stud at Pechey. Tim is using the Exton name for a family Angus stud at Haden.
Farmers work on financial resilience
despite ongoing dry
Queensland farmers
have worked hard to
improve their financial
resilience despite ongoing
dry conditions with a new
survey revealing rural
debt levels are relatively
stable and the quality of
debt has improved.
Agriculture Minister
Mark Furner released the
2017 Queensland Rural
Debt Survey last week,
which noted that total
rural debt was now $17.2
billion, up 1.6 per cent
since the last survey in
2011.
AgForce General
Manager of Policy Dr
Dale Miller welcomed
the release of the survey
and said while it was
only a snapshot in time,
it was important to
have the information
to shape policy responses
Tim Schmaling with 16-months-old Angus bull Exton Norville N21 which the family’s Exton Stud has in
its current draft at Haden.
our understanding of
the financial state of
agriculture in Queensland.
“The survey highlighted
there were a
range of debt levels
being experienced within
the different broad acre
industries and in different
regions,” he said.
“With Queensland
having almost half the
nation’s cattle herd, the
beef industry has the
largest proportion of rural
debt in Queensland at
about $9.3 billion or 54
per cent of the total debt.
“Despite the drought
over the past six years,
beef industry borrowings
have only risen by about
2 per cent overall with
higher prices allowing
some producers to pay
down debt in recent years.
“The average debt
per borrower in the beef
industry is now $1.2
million, down from $1.4
million in 2011.
“It is heartening to see
risk ratings have improved
too with about 95 per cent
of debt considered viable
or potentially viable long
term, however there has
been an increase in the
number of borrowers
and continued support
is needed for those
experiencing debt difficulties.
“The survey reveals
that grains industry debt
has decreased by about
15 per cent on the back
of strong winter crops
in recent years and high
chick pea prices in 2015
and 2016, although the
current outlook for the
state’s grain growers
is challenging due to
continuing dry conditions.
“The sheep industry’s
debt levels have increased
by 36 per cent, which
is attributed to both the
impact of drought and
the significant investment
being made in exclusion
fencing to tackle wild dogs.
This investment in
infrastructure is vital to
help the sheep and wool
industry rebuild.
“The survey highlights
how important debt funding
from banks is as source
of capital for agricultural
businesses and underlines
the ongoing challenges
producers face under
changing seasonal and
economic circumstances.”
Bushfire readiness
meeting
A community bushfire preparation meeting is
being held at Hampton Rural Fire Brigade shed
in Hampton Road on Thursday, August 16, at
5.30pm.
The meeting is open to anyone interested in
understanding more about bushfires and getting
ready for the coming season. Topics will cover the
current and forecast fire season situation, where to
get information about bushfires occurring in the
area, how fire behaves in the area, what people
can do to prepare their properties and how to help
fire brigades access their places, how to get more
advice and information on preparing for the season,
and about developing bushfire plans to stay or
leave if there is a fire.
Residents from surrounding areas are very welcome
to attend and there will be a sausage barbecue
to keep people going until they can get home
for dinner.
AgForce has welcomed
a review of Farm
Household Allowance
to ensure drought-affected
farmers can
access and make the
most of the assistance
available to get them
through tough times.
AgForce CEO Michael
Guerin said more
than half of Queensland
was still drought declared
and the prolonged
nature of he
drought in the state was
taking an enormous financial,
emotional and
environmental toll on
many regional communities.
“The Farm Household
Allowance helps
farmers who have had
little or no income put
food on the table and
meet essential expenses,
so it is vital the
program is working as
effectively as possible,”
he said.
“AgForce welcomed
the recent announcement
of an extension
of the allowance from
three to four years and
we are pleased the Federal
Governnt is going
further to conduct a review
as well.”
Mr Guerin supported
the Federal Agriculture
Minister’s comments
that farmers should
not self-assess whether
they qualify for the allowance
and to seek advice
from rural financial
counsellors.
“The ongoing nature
of the drought in
Queensland has overwhelmed
even the best
efforts of producers to
prepare and the mental
wellbeing of communities
is greatly affected
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
Beekeepers urged to adopt biosecurity code of practice
Beekeepers nationally, commercial and hobby, are
being urged to adopt the Australian Honey Bee Industry
Biosecurity Code of Practice to keep their bees healthy
and to safeguard honey bee and pollination dependent
industries.
Honey production is worth more than $100 million
annually, along with sales of beeswax, queen and
packaged bees.
This is dwarfed by the benefits of bee pollination
services.
“The aim of the National Bee Biosecurity Program
and the associated Biosecurity Code of Practice is to
ensure beekeepers have the awareness and knowledge
to manage bee pests and diseases, and to detect exotic
ones early,” said Australian Honey Bee Industry Council
(AHBIC) Chair Peter McDonald.
“Established pests and diseases like American
foulbrood, small hive beetle and
chalkbrood are causing significant economic and
social harm to the bee industry and this would be
exacerbated by an incursion of an exotic pest like the
varroa mite,” he said.
AHBIC worked with state governments, the
Australian Government and Plant Health Australia to
develop the National Bee Biosecurity Program and the
Biosecurity Code of Practice. The honey bee industry
contributes $400,000 per year to the program through
levies.
In some states, legislation has been changed to assist
with adoption of the Biosecurity Code of Practice, and
bee biosecurity officers and apiary officers are found in
each state to assist beekeepers.
A contingent of Japan’s
future coal leaders toured
New Acland Mine last
in a comprehensive
industry immersion
program. The program
is designed to develop
their knowledge of
international best practice
and see Australia’s highly
respected coal operations
first hand.
The contingent included
eight delegates from
Japan’s largest energy
producers and government
officials under the
JCoal Resource Leaders
Program, which aims to
strengthen Australia and
Japan’s long established
industry relationship.
Delegates toured
New Acland’s open cut
facilities and also visited
an underground mine
in the Bowen Basin
and Queensland Bulk
Handling’s coal loading
facilities at the Port of
Brisbane. Convened by
JCoal and Trade and
Farm household allowance review must be
accessible - Agforce
by the lack of rainfall,”
he said.
“AgForce urges the
Federal Government to
consider increasing the
farm asset cap or excluding
essential farm
assets as applied under
the previous Exceptional
Circumstances system
to make the Farm
Household Allowance
more accessible.
“We would also like
to see greater ongoing
public reporting of
farmer surveys assessing
the effectiveness of
the program, and for
“This new management system has been put in place
to limit the impact of pests and diseases on the businesses
of individual beekeepers, but also the broader industry
and economy,” said Plant Health Australia Executive
Director and CEO Greg Fraser.
The Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity
Code of Practice requires the nation’s 1500 commercial
beekeepers, who have more than 50 hives each, and
the 22,000 hobby beekeepers to use these best-practice
biosecurity measures: • Register as a beekeeper. •
Regularly inspect hives for significant pests and
diseases. • Report notifiable diseases. • Control or
eradicate pests and diseases, and manage weak hives
• Maintain records of biosecurity related actions
and observations. •Appropriately construct and brand
(label) hives.
this to be expanded to
include a 12 month voluntary
follow-up interview
about transitional
experiences, particularly
for those who leave
agriculture.”
Mr Guerin said other
priorities that could
provide immediate
relief to affected communiies
include investment
in capital works
projects, council rates
and land rent rebates,
increased edcation support
for children from
remote areas, and more
secure, long term mental
health funding.
“Drought has such a
big impact on Australian
agriculture and extended
dry periods are a
recuring feature so we
need governments at all
levels and politicians
on all sides to come together
with industry to
work on a sustainable
approach to managing
this issue now and into
the future,” he said.
reporting on Toowoomba Cattle Sale
Sale Date: 30th July, 2018
Total Combined Yarding: of 863 head
There was very little change in sale numbers
this week with light weight lines dominated the
young cattle section, there was only a small
supply of medium and heavy weight yearling
steers and heifers offered. A sample of grown
steers in the 400-500kg came forward, with
only a few bullocks on offer, the handful of good
heavy grown steers and bullocks to export
slaughter received very little change, while
secondary lines were cheaper. Cows varied in
quality, with 4 score cows offering the greatest
numbers, the better end of the cows decreased
11c to 14c/kg, while plain condition lines were
the least affected, Good heavy cows made up
to 225.2c and average 216c, with heavy bulls
making up to 242.2c/kg.The better end of the
heavy weight yearling steers to feed sold to
strong demand..Light weight yearling steers
returning to the paddock made up to 256.2c,
with most around receiving 238c, while poor
quality lines averaged 204c/kg. Medium weight
yearling steers to feed averaged 254c and made
to 262.2c/kg. The occasional B muscle heavy
weight yearling heifer made up to 300c/kg. A
full panel of export buyers were present and
most were operating, along with a few feeder
operators and a limited number of restockers.
• Protect hives from neglect or exposure. • Allow their
operation to be assessed by bee biosecurity officers.
Commercial beekeepers also need to: • Demonstrate
adequate knowledge to identify and manage bee pests
and diseases. • Undergo annual honey testing for
American foulbrood disease. • Provide a declaration that
they operate and manage their bee hives in compliance
with the Biosecurity Code of Practice.
In coming months around 200,000 beehives will
FREIGHT SERVICES FROM WELLCAMP AIRPORT
Toll Group launches freight services from Wellcamp
The Toll Group, one of Australia
major freight carriers, has started
five weekly services from the
Wellcamp Airport.
The services link Wellcamp to
the Toll Priority domestic network
which enables Toll to deliver to
almost every location in Australia,
according to Robert Kasch
Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport
Commercial Manager - Cargo.
Mr Kasch said freight
volumes have been growing on
the international service from
Wellcamp, so it is timely that
Wellcamp Airport is now able to
offer a domestic freight service.
“This new service will enable
Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport to
offer airport-to-airport time critical
freight services on a next available
flight, or express overnight service,
to most locations in Australia and
major business centres in New
Zealand.
“The service is backed by an
unrivalled air freight network,
which enables Toll to deliver to
almost every location in Australia,”
said Mr Kasch.
The new domestic service
offering will complement the
current international Cathay Pacific
service, which links Toowoomba
to the world via Queensland’s only
scheduled 747-8 freighter operating
from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport
to Hong Kong with connections
to over 200 airports through the
Cathay Pacific network.
Toll’s airport-to-airport service
offers: access to hundreds of daily
commercial and freighter aircraft
movements, the capability to
ROBERT KASCH
Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Commercial Manager - Cargo
monitor cargo during all phases
of transport through to its final
destination, and time-critical
delivery of spare parts, which
include Aircraft on Ground parts.
Toll also offer on airport facilities
to service express cargo, domestic
animals including dogs, cats and
live aquarium fish, on airport chiller
facilities in many locations for
perishable cargo, and staff fully
accredited and certified to International
Air Transport Association dangerous
goods standards.
Siebuhr busy on the court in Indonesia
Hayden Siebuhr competes at the Bali Cup for Indonesia.
Highfields athlete Hayden Siebuhr has returned
from Indonesia after representing the country at
the Bali Cup.
Siebuhr and two of his team mates were invited
to play with the foreign team to help develop their
game and teach them new ways to play.
He faced the likes of Cambodia, Bangladesh
and Malaysia and was able to help the Indonesian
team win the cup.
Siebuhr said the language barrier was the hardest
part of settling in with his new team mates.
“The language barrier was pretty strong but we
all tried our best and we ended up getting the win.”
“The play style is very different over there.
They’re more of a developing country at the moment,”
he said.
Siebuhr has also been keeping busy in state
league, winning the minor premiership with the
Queensland Spinning Bullets in the National
Wheelchair Basketball League.
He was unlucky not to secure the championship,
losing to Wollongong in the final.
Siebuhr was also invited to an invitational event
in Turkey but the tournament was cancelled due to
unrest in the area.
Highfields Probus celebrates Christmas in July
Forty members of the Highfields Probus Club
enjoyed the food and fellowship of their Christmas
in July lunch at the Meringandan Hotel.
Highfields Club has an outing or activity every
Rum Club with an amazing version of Jingle Bells
which added to the gaiety and festive feeling of
the lunch.
The club meets every first Thursday of the
month at St Anne’s Church hall and enjoys hearing
from speakers whose talks cover a vast range
of topics.
