Together with local journalist Mim Cook, on a 38C day, we drove her rusty old Saab to Combienbar, where another beat up Land Cruiser from the 80s would take us to Granite Mountain, where we visit the blockade in the State Forest, the area zoned for logging. Local sourced images are alongside those of travels, interstate and international. The painting technique remains from that evolved after attaining a Diploma in Art & Design, Printmaking Major, at Midland TAFE in WA. That was stabilized through being able to hang in commercial galleries in Melbourne after moving to Victoria in 2000. The CV of regional art prizes was further enhanced and good sales meant the product spread about Melbourne, Victoria, interstate and overseas. The scale of work and sales was complete with small to the panoramic and multi-panelled works the like included in this showing. Themes also evolved through the decade of success in Melbourne and that is well represented here also. Most are from what is seen with the enhancement or diminution of the artists’ licence. The crowdscenes are purely invention even though many have claimed knowledge of some characters. In this is the example most appreciated by the artist. When the viewers tell their own story as told in the painting. David Mellows now lives in Creswick and though winters can be cool, the colours of the seasons change are enjoyed. In his series Painted Land, Steve celebrates the complex colours and ever-changing nature of the Australian natural landscape. He slowly reduces the elements down to their constituent parts of tone and shape and colour until they barely resemble the landscape that inspired them. Steve paints in the open air, which gives each paint stroke a sense of place and time. He also works within the studio, taking the memories and fragments back to his enclosed environment and working his pieces into distinct abstracts. His confidence of mark making brings to mind Fred Williams and Arthur Streeton.
